was awed by the big tanks and fancy fish until I witnessed one of the staff take a sick but alive betta off the shelf... decide it can no longer be sold, then proceed to open the the emergency exit and toss everything out, betta and all. A little shocked, I went to the back with my friend to see if we can find the fish and possibly rescue it. What we discovered was a fish grave yard of sorts. long dead and shriveled up bettas, a starfish, a dead octopus, the list goes on. The search for the betta was cut short when I crouched down to inspect the leaf litter on the side and found the eyeless sockets of yet another dried fish staring back. read more

Extensive pet store has a wide variety of supplies for all sorts of pets. Fish, birds, dogs, cats, lizards, frogs, rats, you name it. They'll have what you need. Their aquarium section is terrific with a fantastic selection of marine life. They have many birds, reptiles, rats, rabbits sometimes puppies and kittens for adoption as well. They mostly sell higher end pet foods so you will pay more here. The aquarium selection is very expensive compared to other places I been to. I find the staff to be bit snippy sometimes. For basic pet needs this isn't a good place but for specific needs, this pet store is ideal. Pricey but you'll find what you need. read more

The animals are in tiny enclosures, there are birds in cages ripping their feathers out - how does a pet store that alleges to care about the well-being of animals let them live in these conditions? A wallaby living in a tiny room? They also would not take the top to an aquarium I no longer needed back because the cardboard tag was removed - and wouldn't even give me store credit. Such a shame because it seemed like they employed lots of LGBTQ+ employees (which is amazing) but I will definitely never be going there again. read more

Been here a few times and yet to buy anything. I own two fish tank 55g and 20g and i like the fish but its so expensive. I love the petco in patchogue a lot more than this place. Iv seen fish at critters for $7-$10 that petco sells for under $4. Iv also noticed the staff is a joke. They don't know the simplest fish questions and don't greet you in any ways. I know a lot of fish but i still like to double check with the "experts" at fish stores. Iv also looked at the small animal center. I own 5 rats and all of mine are sweet nice critters but the ones there almost bite my finger off. Also most of the food are in plastic bags not the retail packaging so its not fresh and its overpriced. Good place to look at the big fish tanks but not a good place to buy ordinary fish since they are all overpriced. read more

So I had this experience in 2018 but never posted until I thought about coming here again and was reminded why not to! I think at one point this store was great, but something has changed. The pets are cute, but the customer service stinks. I wish I had gotten a name or two but at the time I was just so dumbfounded I wanted to get out. My son at the time was nearly two and walking. Of course upon entering we are greeted by the duck, which I've always seen before in his pond. We look, my little Guy is thrilled to see the duck swimming, and we move on. Ten minutes pass and we go back by the pond before leaving and the duck suddenly hops out onto the floor. My son and I kinda froze and he started to back away from the duck. The duck proceeds to run over and nip his hand! My son starts sobbing obviously and I grab him and try to shoo the duck away. Finally someone comes over and doesn't address me or my crying child, instead he just talks to the duck! Picks him up and gives him a "scolding" and then the manager (?) comes over to see what happened and barely even looked at me. She didn't apologize or even speak to either of us. When I told her the duck bit my son, she just said "oh" and stared at me. The guy said "I guess he thought you had food," and walked away. I just stood there with my crying child with my mouth open. I get it's a pet store, but we were not trying to pet or bother the animal, my son was well-behaved and stayed by me. I wasn't trying to get anyone in trouble, nor did I expect a big todo. But the fact that these two employees didn't care one bit that their loose animal went for a toddler and couldn't even say a simple "sorry" just soured me completely on the place. read more

The only positive thing I have to say is that they have great fish for sale. Never had a problem with disease or death with any of the fish I have purchased there. Other than that, go somewhere else. The staff is inattentive, always too busy, they never return phone calls, they don't keep their word, and they don't stand behind their products. Also, they have a very sad Eclectus parrot in the back area and he's got ants all over his cage. He clearly has issues, as he is a feather picker. If anybody cared about him at all he would be in a home. Parrots are social beings and should not be in what amounts to nothing more than a closet. I can find comparable fish elsewhere and better customer service anywhere. read more

The guys here know what they're talking about and were happy to take the time to answer my questions, so that I got exactly what I wanted. They gave me a call after I got home to make sure everything was going well, and have been very patient in answering my calls and questions since I've gone home. I live in Westchester, NY but I make the long trip because I know what I'm getting. They have a huge selection, and seemed to care about the fish. I always find the staff friendly and knowledgeable. Wandering around the store is a treat, first class freshwater fish, first class saltwater as well. Where else on Long Island can you see a friendly wallaby?! If you pay attention you can see the staff interacting with the pets and can tell they have a real love for animals. Yes, you can go to a big box chain for better prices, but at what cost? Locally owned businesses are a dying breed, and should get the full support of their communities. I always get my pet rats from here, but the last few times they've given me a FEMALE with two other males...Told me I was unable to touch them or move them from the cardboard box they put them in for 48 hours? Rats chew through cardboard...I'm glad I had a weird feeling in my gut that made me check them all to make sure they were all males, but unfortunately one was a female. Which then I couldn't trade her for a male like they offered, instead I purchased two more females for the one female to have buddies. I surprised my boyfriend with a couple fancy rats as pets, but the customer service I received was not the best. Prior to getting the animals I called the store, a man picked up the phone and when I asked if I could ask a few questions his response was "make it quick we're busy" I was extremely turned off by him but the questions were if they had the rats and what time they closed. When I got to the store an hour before closing I had a young man help me with the rats, what again turned me off was the fact he grabbed the rat by his tail to get him out of the cage. I immediately told him to give me the rat and I held him close to my chest because I saw how scared he was. I'm giving this place 3 stars because they had what I need and the convenience to my home. What a wonderful pet store they have everything you need from salt water fish to freshwater,cats and sometimes dogs and weird animals for sale like prairie dogs sometimes.This is one of the closest places I can find food for my dog health extension and they even have a program with health extension where if you buy 10 bags your 11th is free. Oh my god. Rudest customer service EVER. Their website said to call about availability of sugar gliders because they had them. The guy that picked up the phone was SO RUDE I asked about sugar gliders and he was like "No I don't have any." Which is fine but he didnt follow it up with "thank you for calling we might have some later, please check in again". He actually just sounded angry and HUNG UP ON ME. Just about any type of fish you are looking for they have or will be getting in. They even have shark tanks which I dot think are for sale but theyre cool as hell to look at. A few years back i was very much into fish and aquariums as a hobby. I used to frequent this place often and i was always satisfied with the help and assortment of product. Fast forward to this week and i have to say...what happened to this place?.. First of all they have an above ground pond at the front as soon as you walk into the store and usually its filled with koi that you can feed. This time it had a lonesome goose sitting in the water surrounded by koi . Suddenly i noticed a half sunken turtle on top of the water and i said to myself .."turtles don't float". The turtle was dead as disco and was being systematically eaten by the koi fish. My daughter and i just gave each other the look and moved on. They have bird cages here with what look to be toucan like birds ( im no bird expert) ...one word describes the area they live in and the floor around them..Filthy. Next we have a nasty area in the back that has about 6 kittens all in one room that stinks to high heaven jumping at the 50 flies that are in their enclosure ....this is their playtime i guess. Matter of fact the flies were everywhere. We only came here for crickets ( which btw half died in a day but hey crickets are tough) but trust me they need to re-evaluate what it is they have here. It's sad how this place has changed. I used to go in when I was 12 and they were all the way down 112 in another store area. Used to be in this place several times a week buying stuff. Anyway went in today looking to see if they had Oster Kool lube and there were prairie dogs. Big sign don't pick them up they can fall. So I waited until most of them were on the other side and pet one of their heads. The rest ran over and tried to climb my jacket. Some jerk at the register screams MS MS MS MS as loud as he can continually until I turn around and glare at him. No please don't come over and help your customer a 44 year old woman btw no scream at me so the entire store turns around and looks. This isn't the first time I've gone in and gotten no help either. So Country Critters I have no idea how you stay in business when Amazon is cheaper and so is Petsmart/Petco etc. read more

I grew up in Patchogue and Country Critters has always been my pet store. I loved that it is a mom and pop shop and have such great memories of coming in with my parents and looking at all the animals. So even though I moved to Bayport as an adult I still came here with my kids. We recently bought a breaded dragon and the complete set up for my sons fish tank for Christmas. Once a week we come in for crickets and so far it's been great. But this week I bought the crickets and when I got home a few were dead in the bottom of the bag and they didn't look good. I put them in the feeder tank and within 24 hours they were all dead. I called right away because I was concerned that I had already fed some to my bearded dragon and was worried he'd get sick. I talked to an associate who said the bearded dragon should be fine and when I asked if they'd replace the crickets he said he'd check with his supervisor. It was a really pleasant conversation up to that point so I wasn't at all prepared for the supervisor to get on the phone and immediately be defensive and nasty! He kept saying I wanted something for free and that I had clearly done something wrong that killed the crickets. I was so bewildered by his tone and the way he was talking to me. The crickets were $5 and I'm a weekly customer. He was so mean that I'll never step foot in that store again. Forget the crickets, who talks to someone like that? Not worth it. read more

I'm not very pleased. I bought a bunny from there and I went back a few weeks later to ask about another and a employee gave me the biggest attitude! Also I do not like how the bunny cages are kept, and how multiple of bunny's are kept in a small cage together it's horrible to see. My first experience was good but my second was horrible. ALSO if you are interested in buying a bunny DO NOT buy there 42' inch cage they sell!!!!!! Order a 47inch cage off amazon!!! Cheaper and nicer for a bunny. Went there today to buy some fish medication which I could not find locally anywhere else. The store is huge, they have the biggest salt water exhibition tank I have ever seen in a pet shop, (2000 gallons), complete with two Tarpon no less! Their salt water section is a dream come true, I felt like a kid at a candy shop. I called the place beforehand to see if they had the medication I needed and the gentleman checked the shelves, got the med and it was up at the register before I arrived. They have a nice selection of reef tanks at reasonable prices, (mind you salt water reef systems are inherently expensive), but these are as fairly priced as they can be. I suspect they deal with businesses and hospitals which have awesome displays in their lobbies, since the majority of their saltwater fish are for tanks 150 gal and up. knowledgeable, polite staff. read more

They have a huge aquatic section. They even have fresh millet 20 big pieces for 5 dollars whereas you could go to a petco, and for a little pack of 4 can run you 5-6 dollars. After recently purchasing a bunny from them who is great, I decided I wanted to get another one of the same breed. I went there on Friday to buy fish supplies and seen they had a new set of bunnies. I was told by a worker that they'd start taking deposits on Sunday for them but if I really liked one I saw that I could call and put a hold on it. I called on Sunday just so no one took the one I liked and everything was fine. I get a call back telling me they weren't taking deposits for those bunny's until the middle of next week. It sounded a little odd to me so I went down there (I had to get stuff for my other bunny anyways) and I went back where the bunny's were and I asked a worker if they were taking deposits as I seen the sign under their cage that said they were. She said "yes". So, I proceed to the front counter to put a deposit on the bunny and the owner (who after the fact claimed she wasn't the owner just a 'manager') told me they weren't taking deposits for those specific bunnies. Totally confused, a different worker took my info but as I went to get the bunny supplies I needed, another woman who was looking at the same bunnies went up and easily put a deposit down on one of them .... I was told that the bunny I picked was "sick". Then why was it in a cage with four other bunnies? Why didn't you inform the lady who just bought one that her bunny was enclosed with a sick bunny? Both owners (husband & wife) refused to give a valid reasoning why I couldn't purchase a bunny, YET, I already own a bunny from them. He's been to the vet and has a clean bill of health. I would figure that a repeat bunny buyer buying another one would be easy. Both owners constantly claimed they weren't the owners yet all their workers pointed them out. I still have no idea why I wasn't able to purchase a bunny. After all the money we've spent at this store, I highly don't recommend anyone going in there. You get lied too & obviously there okay with selling animals that could possibly be contaminated by another "sick" animal. read more

Not happy with their service. I purchased two blue crayfish yesterday. Brought them home and one of them was dead within a few hours. I brought it back - Dominick the fish guy said it happens. Not what I wanted to hear. He said it could of died in the car - could of molted and got stuck - he gave me so many reasons why the fish is dead. Country critters does not give any warranty - Dominick said it's my problem. Not good customer service. He wanted me to pay half for another one. I said absolutely not. I asked for a manager. A young blonde girl came to the front of the store - I explained what happened in which she then had to call the owner - she walked in the back and said Dominick is putting a cray fish in a bag. I said thank you. Dominick walked the cray fish to me in which he was angry that he had too. I would not recommend buying fish from Dominick - he was very rude and nasty. Stay away from Dominick!!! Went there for some Hamster stuff and almost bought an Aquarium !!! The place doesn't look too big from the street but it's huge. The gigantic area for Fish and Sting rays, etc...was unbelievable. When you walk in the front door, you are greeted by a duck in a pond surrounded by turtles... If your looking for any exotic type birds, animals or reptiles, this is the place to go. They have a "Toucan" for christ's sake !!!! lol This place was great !!! read more

I bought a Malti-Poo at Country Critters last month for $1050 plus tax to total $1150. Took her to my vet 2 days later with a stool sample that came back positive for Giardia. $ 47.50 for 5 days worth of medication. Had her tested 10 days later with a cost of $29.50 and was told she still is positive for Giardia. Now I spent another $ 47.50 for medication & will have to have her tested again with another stool sample for another $29.50. I don't know when this will end or how much more I will have to spend because I was sold a sick puppy. It is highly contagious to humans. My puppy was in the enclosure at Country Critters with 3 other puppies who I am assuming also will test positive for Giardia. Fortunately, I do not have children in the home to worry about them catching Giardia. I gave Country Critters one star in this review, only because I wasn't given the option to give zero. I am disappointed , frustrated & upset with this store & am also saddened that my puppy has to go through all this. I would not recommend Country Critters to anyone. read more

Terrible experience! This store sold me defective product which nearly caused me to lose all my fish... Manager Was extremely unprofessional and rude. Told me he didn't have time to test the defective product would not replace if opened. Was very disappointed and will no longer shop here. PetCo helped me quickly and gave me the correct product. Still in shock over this so called manager's behavior. I was not concerned over the $10 I lost . It was the rude way it was handled and lack of concern. I love coming here and buying fish. They're very knowledgeable and helpful with questions. However, I bought a pair of fish which both died in a days so I brushed it off since the others I purchased were thriving, the other day I purchased two more and one didn't look so well when it was put in the tank. It was dead maybe 12 hours later so I went back to the store the next day to see if they could exchange it for the same fish. The people in the front told me it was fine, however the gentleman in the fish department then started yelling at me that the others don't make that decision and they don't guarantee fish because they don't know what happens to it after it leaves the store. I would have accepted being told they don't exchange fish in the beginning but the miscommunication and attitude I received was outrageous. I'm a good customer and spends 100s of dollars almost every time I go, however now I'm not sure I want to come back. read more

Horrible. I waited about 15 minutes to be helped and then finally got some only after asking and then waiting another 10 minutes. I spoke with one of the people in the fish department and specifically asked for non-aggressive fish to go into my community tank. I did get a nice pair of guppies and a female swordtail, and then an albino rainbow shark. I thought sharks were aggressive, but I relied on this person's advice who said they would be fine. Wrong. Now they won't take the fish back and I'm stuck with it. After seeing the relatively poor looking/unhealthy fish in the chain pet stores I had resolved going forward to only buy fish online. This past weekend I figured I'd give a local store a chance, but I was wrong. Never going back. read more

I've been a customer on and off (giving up on my fish tank and then getting it back) I stick with fresh water fish but the ones I have gotten from this store have been very healthy and I had for years which is a plus in comparison to fish in chain pet stores. They are alittle pricy but I don't mind since they have the sources I was looking for. Many years ago I bought a hamster from here and honestly it had the best temperament! As for the staff, they were fine, but it also seemed as if they were spread thin across the store. Not a big deal. Going to Country Critters is as good as going to an aquarium! Great displays of a huge variety of fish, great prices too. They also have exotic birds and small animals.
