My friends and I came here because BBQ is most definitely the way to go after a long day of hiking…read more I'm surprised there's no other reviews of Wandering Joe's on Yelp despite it opening almost a year ago in July 2021. However, Google reviews were positive, so we were pretty excited. It's right next to a meadery called "Saga Meadery & Winery". Definitely a good choice buying both BBQ and some mead to go with it (which is what one of my friends did and thoroughly enjoyed it). Wandering Joe's is a mom-and-pop shop, and both owners were kind and helpful when we ordered. Here were my thoughts: LEMONADE - 2 Lots of ice, but it comes in a 16 oz. cup. The lemonade was perfectly refreshing and I downed all of that within five minutes or so. It went well with our food and it was just what I needed after a long hike. It was also not too sweet and more on the citrusy/fruity side. Even as I'm writing this review six hours later, I'm still thinking about that lemonade. SMOKED MEAT PLATTER - 15 This comes with 1/2 a pound of meat, 2 sides along with pickles, onions, sauce, and 2 slices of white bread on the side. The pricing is good and comes with a good amount of food. My friends and I all got some variation of the platter. One of my friends and I got the chopped beef for my meat option, but we thought the seasoning and sauce on it was way too salty. Even eating this with the bread didn't help. The rib tips that our other friends got was not too salty and good BBQ flavor. But the texture was inconsistent - some pieces were super tender and delicious, but others were incredibly dry and hard to chew. Overall, we weren't quite impressed with the meat. As for the sides, I thought the smoked pintos were very tasty and the texture of the beans were just right. I also liked the parmesan crumbles mixed in. The grits were also fantastic! It had a few pieces of pork on top along with more parmesan. I'd highly recommend it. I tried the other two options that my friends got. I liked that the slaw was very crunchy and sweet (from the apple pieces). The esquites were cold but I liked them like that. My one friend who got them did not enjoy it as much, so I guess it's a preference thing. I'd recommend trying any of the sides as they were satisfactory. Wandering Joe's is a Tex Mex restaurant, so they also have tacos and queso & chips here. Sadly, we didn't try either or, but have seen good reviews about it on Google. Overall, it was a 3/5 but the owners were really nice and the restaurant is still pretty new, so I'll bump the rating to a 4/5.

Cute little shop and restaurant with apple cider donuts…read more They have some outdoor seating and indoor seating. The food is classic breakfast and diner food. There is a long line to order food but there is also a second check out line that moves faster if you're just buying drinks and donuts. Lots of cute stuff around outside to look at too. I agree with others that it's somewhat set up like a Cracker Barrel - a combination of store and restaurant. There are three areas you can eat - outside on the patio, on the bar side (tons of seating of different variety- bench, seats, and couches), and the non-bar side (seating is less and a bit more tight). There's lots of interesting decor and history here. It seems like a nice place to hang out during the colder months when the fireplace gets going. Ordering was super quick and you don't have to sit on the side you ordered from. Just let them know where you will be at and they will come find you (listen for your number). I had the apple cider and I was pleasantly surprised. All the Apple cider I have had is non-alcoholic and I thought that was what I was drinking until my boyfriend set me straight. It was so yummy and I couldn't taste the alcohol at all (my kind of drink)! The ID check should have clued me in...but I thought it was because my boyfriend also ordered an alcoholic drink. My boyfriend ordered the Mushroom Swiss Burger with Mac & Cheese while I had the Brisket Grilled Cheese with Bacon Ranch Potato Salad. We also ordered a dozen Apple Butter. Everything tasted good and there was a decent amount of brisket in my sandwich. Even that I recommend letting some pieces with the bbq sauce mix in with the potato salad. It makes it even better! The donuts were good too, but I recommend taking them home and popping them into the microwave for a bit. Then put a scoop of coffee almond ice cream on it. All in all, I definitely wouldn't mind coming back here again after a hike.

What a shining example of Virginia barbecue at its finest! It may be a small establishment, but…read morethat just means they take the time to lovingly craft your quality meal. The delectable smokehouse flavors envelop your mouth with every bite. I got the pulled pork sandwich meal with potato salad while my friend got the brisket sandwich meal with macaroni and cheese. Despite the fact that we were ravenous after hiking up a mountain all day in the rain, we could barely finish our meals! The succulently smoked meat was packed in a fresh, toasted bun and covered in tasty bbq sauce. Even the potato salad had the perfect blend of potatoes, mayo, and relish for a refreshing side. The staff there were also extra friendly with their curbside service despite the lateness of the hour (nearing closing) and the drizzle. Growing up in Texas I take my barbecue seriously, and this place is one I will frequent anytime I'm passing through Front Royal. I don't need mountains to have this mountain top experience!

We had food catered for a family event, costing nearly $2K and I was shocked with how little care, energy and flavor were placed on the items. Their namesake, greens, along with most of the other items, were clearly from a bag, can or freezer off a shelf that morning. Most of our food went untouched and we couldn't convince anyone to take any leftovers home. Do not order their banquet style food. To be clear, I am willing to pay what it costs for delicious food! What they charged would've been fine if the food was good... I really am rooting for this business but they need to put more work in to justify any cost. Good luck!

Well I did this but when we got there, they said they don't allow that on weekends...but how was I suppose to know this. It's not posted on their website. But I explained we didn't know, it's our first trip and had traveled from northern Va, the staff was very nice and the mgr accommodated us. They were busy so service was not fast but we were ok with it. As for the food, maybe it's a locals thing with calling this the best pizza ever but for us, it was definitely NOT the best pizza nor the top 10! Sorry but my first clue was when our pizza came out and all I see was sliced CANNED mushrooms! I love mushrooms but not canned mushrooms on pizza...and there was so much toppings that we couldn't even tell if there were any cheese. The thin crust was good but overall, we just couldn't relate to the people that called their pizza the best. Sorry. Their wings were a good size and tasted good though. Mozzarella sticks were meh and cheesesteak didn't have much steak. The garlic cheese bread with mushrooms sounds good until....it had canned mushrooms again lol. With that said, front royal is not the place for pizza.
