Counterpoint coffee has become my absolute favorite local coffee shop in Monterey. They really care about the quality of their coffee and the baristas are skilled in steaming milk and pouring some dope latte art. In fact, counterpoint offers latte art classes for those who are interested in learning how to craft their own drinks. The matcha rose water lemonade is excellent with the flavors being really well balanced and not overly sweet which many lemonades are. They offer beer on tap and this spot is awesome to sit down with a pint and people watch. If you're ever in Monterey (specifically seaside), come give counterpoint a visit. The young man that was working there yesterday afternoon needs a lesson in politeness. I said thank you to this young man 3 times and not once did he even acknowledge it. I tippied him a $1.00 I know it's not much but the total for the average peppermitn mocaha that I paid for cost me $8.50 total including the $1.00 tip which to me is expensive considering. I ordered and 2 customers walked in after me, and he waited on them and yes they only wanted pastries but I was before them and it's not their fault but the young man all he had to do was say I will be right with you. I almost felt like sticking my hand in the tip jar and taking my $1.00 back but I didn't of course. Will I ever go there again NO. There are plenty of coffee shops on the Peninsula without having to deal with rude baristas. read more

The coffee was excellent and extraction was on point. Not bitter or acidic. The baristas were well trained to say the least. The environment was interesting, a little fringe for me but they had a really cool record wall where you could choose what to play on their speakers. read more

Decided to stop by on my way back up to NorCal. I'm so glad I tried this place out. I'd say it's the best coffee I've had my whole trip. I got a pandan latte & some whole beans. I really liked the pandan latte, had a sweet and nutty flavor profile. The barista was nice & answered my questions. The vibe of the cafe seemed cool. I do pottery down the street a couple of days a week, so I stop in here for caffeine beforehand. It's got a great chill vibe - cool decor, vinyl collection, comfy seats, and outdoor seating too. They make a great, not too sweet, dirty chai latte. I wish they had a gluten free pastry option or two (besides oatmeal cups) but I know that creates a whole handling/cross contamination issue. Second time here and they might have renovated the place since I was here last, not sure. So far I have tried their blueberry waffle, oatmilk cappuccino, mint tea (first visit) and they were all great! Service was quick and friendly, however, I did witness some frustration from the staff when calling out orders for the 3rd or 4th time. I understand the frustration but some of the orders they were calling out for were customers that were in the bathroom. The overall vibes are very hipster. While the service was fair, the coffee (blueberry cold brew) was awful---tossed it after two sips--and the orange white chocolate scone- chewier than some of the chewiest breads I've had, when scones should be flaky and delicate. Well made drinks, cool interior design and decor. My mom and I typically meet here for a beverage a couple times a month. We've found that for the last 3 months, the business isn't open on time, or the staff is super rude and completely unprofessional. We accepted those stumbling point, in light of their drinks. Today was pretty much the last straw. The girl who "helped" me didn't even say "hi" or "how can I help you" or "what can I get you". She just stood there (doing literally nothing) like I'm doing her a favor in coming by and spending $8 each on 2 espresso & tonics lol She was super friendly and overly talkative to a man who dropped off some supplies only minutes after, though. I must not have been doing enough for her to earn her conversation I know this business doesn't care about reviews, or their customers, since many of their reviews mention their dismal customer service skills. Likewise, this business even posts negative reviews on their social media to mock their customers. All that said, hopefully the girl with the tan shirt, who worked around 9am today, can improve her attitude and gain an ounce of customer service skills. As a former college barista, I have a healthy respect for how much time and effort goes into making good drinks. I also have serious admiration when I see genius and delicious concoctions being made. The Undertow is not one of my favorite drinks- it IS my favorite drink in the whole world. In the middle of our PCH road trip I had hubs stop in Seaside just so I could get two of this masterpiece. Three distinct layers: vanilla syrup, oat milk, espresso- and the temperature differences add to the complexity of the drink. Thank you so much to Alex and Josie, who were amazing at assembling such a finicky but perfect drink, and also heated up a tasty AF fiselle (prosciutto, mayo, mustard and havarti) panini for me. I drank my undertows at the counter like shots, and by the time I was done the fiselle was ready to take to go. This short but sweet visit was the most magical start to the day, and will definitely be one of the highlights of a 3.5 week road trip. Thanks again Counterpoint!!! PSA: TIP YOUR BARISTAS WELL!!! This coffee shop is easily missed if you are unaware of it. A friend had seen it so decided to try it. Not sure how many times I passed right by and never noticed it was there. There is not a lot of parking only on-street parking out front. When you walk in you are hit with the eccentric setup of this place. It's pretty cool. Not only do they serve coffee but beer and wine as well. We got americanos which are served in actual coffee cups if staying there instead of paper to go cups which was nice.
