We are the hardest customers in the world when it comes to couches. Okay, that's a lie. I'm easy. My partner, however, who has a bad back, is very difficult. Have you ever tried to find a couch for someone who has short legs and a bad back in this day and age of super-deep, super-fluffy sofas? It's nearly impossible - and if you've got even a modicum of a sense of style, you can kiss it off. We estimate that by the time we walked into Couch Potato, we'd sat on at least five hundred couches all over Central California. Enter Couch Potato! We walked in and tried out a couple of couches. The owner wandered by and asked if we were looking for anything specific. When we explained my partner's problem, he pointed to three couches and said, "You want that one, that one, or that one. Try 'em out, kick back, and let me know if you have any questions." Then he left us alone to try out the couches. And he was right! We tried out some that he hadn't pointed at that looked like they were more likely to work (how we came up with this demented idea I don't know...like I said, by that time we'd sat on nearly every couch for sale in central California), because after lots of bad experiences at furniture stores we were skeptical. The ones he hadn't pointed at didn't work for my partner. The ones he pointed at did work. When we found one that we really liked except for the arms, he showed us another one that was very similar but had much more stylish arms. We were able to pick our own fabrics and have it custom-made. And he said if we hated it when we got it, he'd refund our money! He let us swap out the throw pillows that came with it for other ones that we liked much better. While he said we'd get it in four to six weeks, we got it in three (just in time for my mom to come to town). I only have one complaint. Now that we have this awesome couch, we never leave the house anymore! All our friends insist on coming over because our couch is so comfy. Darn you, Couch Potato! You've made me popular!!! Drove all the way to LA to scope out the Arizona Leathers clearance centers, as well as their store in Concord. Tried the Macy's furniture in the Del Monte shopping center of Monterey. A few others as well, but all had salesmen like sharks ready to offer their advice and trail us like we were dragging bacon. No offense, but after doing some internet research on what I'm looking for, I don't need a middle-aged loser who sells furniture for a living telling me what I need to look for. The lady at AZ leathers in Concord lied through her teeth and the price dropped the closer you got to the exit. Alas, I found the Couch Potato, on black friday. No matter if I offered cash, prices were as listed. Then I read the wall, they don't b*llshit you. Prices are as marked and they leave you the hell alone. There aren't any fancy rooms setup, the guy just carries quality and marks it cheaper than anywhere else. Plain and simple, I love this store. We bought a couch here in 1999 and a recliner in 2000. The couch is still comfortable and in good shape almost 12 years later. The recliner's mechanism broke last year. So we call Couch Potato and the owner asks some questions, figures out what chair we own and tells us he can still order a replacement part and give us the name of a furniture repair guy! (Sadly I think something was off with the frame because the replacement mechanism broke in like 6 weeks, but that's not the point!) Having recently moved to Monterey, my ladyfriend and I decided the two things we would spend decent money on was a bed and a couch. After touring the Monterey area with little success, we headed up to Soquel to check out the Couch Potato. The store is actually two warehouse-type rooms and a little office filled with couches. Any configuration or type of couch you could want, they have. Leather, overstuffed, chaise style, modern--you name it and they probably have it. The sales staff are perfect. Laid back and helpful but very willing to leave you alone so you and your rear end can go through the decision making process. When my ladyfriend and I needed to choose between two different couches, we were actually talked into the cheaper couch because it was potentially more versatile. Awesome. When you choose your couch, you then go through the different patterns and fabrics to make it your very own. And there are a LOT of choices. Since every couch is custom made, it takes an average of six weeks to get your couch in. The prices are reasonable, and firm. You might be used to talking down the "sucker price" posted on most furniture. They don't do that here. Nor do they finance, so visit only if you can buy the couch (half due when you order, the rest when you pick it up). They also deliver for an additional fee, and it is a little pricey delivering to the Monterey area. And finally, for the local connection, they support local charities and kids' sports teams. Can you imagine a Little League team called the "Couch Potatoes"? If you need a new couch, go here first. Leather is thin, padding is so thin that you can feel the frame on the arms, and by 1 year of wear the seams did not look good.
