We own a home that has an almost flat section of roof. It had been shingled with traditional 3-tabs previously and that didn't wear well. My husband's family used to own a roofing company, so he knows quite a bit about it, and he wanted to use roll-down roofing material. He contacted Cottonwood because they're close to our home. The owner of this roofing company met with my husband and assured him that they could do the job. He gave us one estimate for the cost of doing the flat part of the roof and a separate one for the rest of the roof, because my husband was thinking about doing the flat part himself. He wanted to make sure it was done right. But this owner talked him into letting Cottonwood do the whole job. When they came to install the roof, the owner was not on the job and he sent a less-than-knowledgeable crew. My husband went over to see what they were doing, and they'd started installing regular shingles on the flat part of the roof. He had them cease and desist, called the owner. The crew ended up taking the shingles off, leaving roofing nails sticking up that they didn't remove, and then putting the roll-down on over those nails! Also, they neglected to install any type of moisture barrier between the plywood of the roof and the roll-down. (Yes, we now have basically a tarp covering this roof, with nails sticking up beneath it.) My husband called this company on numerous occasions, wanting to talk to the owner, but the owner would never return any of his calls. He always ended up talking to the office assistant, who let him know that the owner routinely neglects to return customer calls. We had a number of other problems about the roofing job they did, and eventually a lot of nagging got a couple of them addressed (a part of the roof they didn't even do; old shingles/nails left all over the back deck; damage to the vinyl siding and soffits, etc.). Our insurance company advised us to withhold payment until all the problems were addressed. But it's difficult to get your problems resolved when the owner won't even talk to you, much less come out to see what the issues are with the roof. Eventually, the owner of this company filed a lien on our property for the full amount of his bill. My husband went to their office with a check in the amount of the estimate for the rest of the roof, deducting the amount for the improperly installed roll-down roof. Since the owner was not there, the office assistant said she couldn't release the lien unless we paid the full amount. Again, the owner did not contact us. We did get a letter from a lawyer threatening to sue us for payment, but after our response detailing all the problems, we haven't heard anything from either the owner or his lawyer. I don't know when I've experienced worse customer service. Having been business owners ourselves, and having a relative who still owns a roofing company (in Texas), I can't imagine any respectable business owner refusing to talk with a customer, to look at a poorly done job, to even make any attempt to make this right. It seems pretty obvious that we're going to have to go to extra expense to have the flat part of this roof redone properly, and to see what we can do about this inappropriate lien. So, please ignore any positive experiences related here about Cottonwood Roofing. There are plenty of roofing contractors in the Kansas City area. Avoid this one! read more
