I am a picky consumer and I must have gone in to this store 10 times before deciding on a bed (by the way, I bought the organic spring mattress - which I am loving) Each time I came in the staff treated me like an old friend and never pressured me to make a decision. I'm pretty sure they would have let me come in everyday and lay on beds for the next 20 years with no complaint or annoyance. Everyone seemed sincere. I checked out cotton cloud (along with about 5 other bedstores) because all my friends seem to love the owner. I never got to meet her but her staff is everything I heard about her. read more

Something very unexpected happened to me last week regarding this issue and merchant. The manager of the store called me as he had read the most recent update review I wrote (see the one right before this update). He had talked to their General Manager because he felt really bad about everything not working the way it was supposed to - especially after he read my review, which I think made him really understand what a problem this had been for me. So, we talked for several minutes about ways to help me solve the problem. I thought this was really nice because they didn't need to call me or offer any other ideas or do anything. But they did. Within the time of that phone call we were able to put our heads together and come up with a solution that is definitely better than what I was having to deal with, and while it may not be what I had originally intended it to be, it was very creative and helpful. Because of this client service, and the fact that Cotton Cloud wants to do more than 'just what they promised to initially' - they want you to be happy and comfortable in the end, I had to write this update letting people know about this small businesses' willingness to help their clients as much as they can. This is something few businesses do anymore- large or small. Many small businesses I have found are, more than anything, frightened to extend help that reaches too far beyond the initial set expectations that they agreed upon with their clients. And, I am sure, this is most likely because small businesses run on such a thin profit margin for the most part AND they get hit just as hard with the same expenses and overhead a big business has. So, they have to watch the bottom line very carefully. This is something I really do understand. And, I appreciate it, too. So, in my opinion, in this day and age of the smaller business simply NOT being able to make it because of the huge corporations out there, this step was not only large in terms of client service, but it really said so much about the great character of this business. So, bottom line is this: 1) Cotton Cloud will help you to discover what it is you are really looking for and needing, if you need help with that. They are chock full of really good ideas for challenging spaces and places. 2) They are very clear about what they sell, how it is made, what the costs are and why they are what they are. 3) They will support any warranty claim that is valid. 4) And, if something just isn't working right, let them know. They want you to be happy with your purchase. My space has challenges that are ridiculously difficult to make a sofa and/or bed to work in. But, they have proven to me that they are not just selling futons, they are helping people be more comfortable in their sleeping and living spaces. And they are excellent at specific problem solving. No, this did not go the way I wanted it to. But, sometimes in life, these things happen. It wasn't Cotton Clouds fault, but it wasn't mine, either. So this is a small business that is still built on the principle of really trying to make the customer happy. I would send anyone here who is looking for a futon and a solution for a space they need help with. The ingenuity of the small business is alive and well! This is what Cotton Cloud has proved to me. And this is another reason I like to support small businesses as much as possible. The kind of service I got from Cotton Cloud is not something that comes by me on a regular basis. I originally bought a futon and frame from Cotton Cloud in 2005. I was sufficiently happy with their service and the quality of the furniture to return to them a couple weeks ago, nearly ten years later. This time, we were buying another new frame and mattress as well as a replacement mattress for the frame I bought in '05. That frame is still going strong, btw. The only reason we needed to replace that mattress was because at that time all I could afford was the most basic futon, and they aren't meant for heavy use over several years. So, we were ready for an upgrade. From start to finish, our experience with Cotton Cloud was easy, quick, and professional. Judy helped get us started when we came in, and she did a great job helping us try out the different kinds of couch mattress to see what we would like. We decided on the Lovejoy, which so far I highly recommend. It is extrememly comfortable, and because it contains wool, it is nice and warm. Because we use our futons daily as couches and as occasional pull-out beds for guests, this was the ideal mattress for us. We are also very happy with our new frame. Their furniture is durable, beautiful, and easy to adjust from couch to bed. For an extra charge of $65, they will deliver and assemble the futon. I HIGHLY recommend this. The men they sent were quick about it. It would have taken us hours to do what they did in about 20 minutes. They were also very nice, and showed us how to adjust the futon. All in all, my experience with Cotton Cloud has been great. We will be returning to them in a few months for the matching chair/ottoman to our couch. I recommend them! read more

We bought a latex mattress from here. We are super pleased with it and have excellent sleep! No complaints and would recommend. The staff when ordering were really helpful. We ordered the mattress late, and due to our own fault, anticipated a couple nights without a mattress. However, the person who took our order, without asking to, sped our order up and managed to get us our mattress super quick, which meant we didn't have to sleep on a camp bed! Purchased futon, mattress and cover in January. We had visited the store last September and talked w/ Travis, who was extremely helpful. We didn't get around to ordering until January. He remembered us when we went in. He answered all questions with just the right amount of detail. Our order arrived promptly (less than a week for all pieces including custom made cover). I've only had online experience with Cotton Cloud. I have purchased their "sublime" mattress and two bed frames. Both times my experience with the sales staff was excellent. I purchased the sublime because I wanted a mattress that I could, when it was worn out, dispose of by composting it rather than landfill. It was purchased for our guest room. Much to my surprise, I like this mattress a lot more than my $1,500 European Sleep Works mattress, a mattress that is much, much better than anything you could buy at Sleep Train or like store. Quite simply, it warms you us from underneath and that makes for really sound sleep. I recently purchased a 100% wool mattress from Holy Lamb Organics. Holy lamb makes the most amazing comforters ever. Their mattress costs twice as much as the sublime. The sublime is better. The wool pillows I purchased from Cotton Cloud, five years ago, were dreadful. They listened to my complaint with great concern and rapidly refunded my money on them. I doubt they still carry these pillows. read more

I recently purchased a frame for a king bed from Cotton Cloud and my wife and I are extremely happy with it. We moved into our house shortly after all the Covid-related restrictions went into place, and while I always like to get a close look at the furniture I'm buying before doing so, that just isn't an option right now. I saw a great looking bed frame on their website and decided to take the plunge. Throughout the shipping process, Mack kept me in-the-loop on the status of the frame. When it finally arrived, I was not disappointed. The wood was sturdy and pleasant to the touch, and the assembly process was very easy to follow. I should also add that I did a fair amount of shopping around prior to picking it out, and the price was excellent considering the quality of the frame. With all the uncertainty of moving during a world-wide pandemic, pleasant surprises like my experience with Cotton Cloud are all the more appreciated. read more

I just got my new bed and I'm writing to tell y'all about my experience. My chiropractor told me to go to this place when I told her I was going to buy a futon from target and her disapproving look would not disuade me. She admitted that she herself sleeps on a futon and that if a futon was my passion, I couldn't buy cotton filled target #$%^&, I had to go to the quality place she goes. I went down there and actually got to spend a couple of minutes with the owner, who, by the way, is the exact person you want to buy a bed from. She seems like she'll bring you milk and cookies and rub your head while you fall asleep as an added feature. When the sales person came over, they knew way more about beds than I would have expected. There was no pressure or sales pitch to spend more than I had. It was as if they cared more about my happiness than making a sale. Maybe they don't work on commission? Who knows. They were incredibly patient with the incredibly long time I took to make my decision. I should tell you that I came back 3 times before I chose my bed. One intesting thing about that is the sales people were generally the same and they started to remember my name and greet me like an old friend . It was a very different experience than I expected at a futon store. The bed was delivered and brought in by 2 very strong dudes with good manners (which is alway suprising in a delivery service). I got my bed set up and I had a kick butt sleep last night, which is why I'm up so early writing a review of a bed store. I'm in a darned good mood. read more

In late November, 2012, i bought a bed from a local company who typically buys their futon mattresses from Cotton Cloud. The only reason i agreed to buy the bed/mattress package--rather than buying the mattress separately from Rock Soft--was because CC's futon mattress #11 was described as having boxed corners and side panels on all 4 sides. The description emphasized this because side panels help a futon keep its shape. When the mattress arrived, NO SIDE PANELS. Ultimately, i spoke with the owner of Cotton Cloud, Terry, who, long story short, did not listen, did not know what her website said, did not know that the website description had been changed the day before, when someone else in her company got wind of my complaint, and did not offer to resolve the issue. She was flippant and smug and i regret i didn't return the mattress and buy from Rock Soft, who have ALWAYS had better customer service (at least for the last 6 years i've lived in Portland). Of course, i was in one of those situations where i couldn't wait another couple days and schlep futons hither and yon. But SHAME ON ME for putting penny one in Terry's pocket! My suggestion: DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY. We needed a futon for guests, asap. The staff at the store were very helpful and friendly. They took the time to review all the options with us, and did not try to sell us any more than we needed or wanted. We bought a futon slightly more than the price advertised on their website, this was mostly because of the upgrades we wanted. We purchased the futon and paid an extra $20 for assembly upon delivery. The futon was delivered 6 days after we bought it. It came within the two hour window we were told to clear. The delivery staff did a great job, and where helpful and very professional. I would totally recommend paying the extra $20 for assembly. read more

I just bought a futon and frame from Cotton Cloud. I was very happy with the service and flexibility. However, when a friend went to pick up the futon, he was given a frame unassembled in a box, rather than the already assembled one I had arranged to buy. Cotton Cloud was very apologetic about this. They gave me an extremely good deal on sending a team over to rectify the situation (switching the preassembled for the boxed one). Went here with hopes of buying a futon. Store reeks as soon as you walk in---smells like a awful mixture of cat urine and cigarrette smoke and it doesn't go away once you are in the store. I asked the sales person to show me two futons since I was there already. In both cases when he pulled the futon out to show how it becomes a bed, the frames were both broken. After two pretty terrible mattress and pillow buying experiences due to staff negligence, I won't be returning here again. After replacing my pretty pricey mattress due to an issue that was the fault of their staff, my newest replacement mattress is half as thick, (barely) filled with cheap materials not found in my original mattress and has compressed so much in the past few months that it now sinks between the slats of my bed frame, even after the recommended rotations. My sleep is the worst it has ever been. I feel like I'm sleeping on an inflatable camping mattress with an air leak. The biggest joke is that I had to pay for additional materials when it was their fault to begin with. I really feel like I was taken out for a ride because I wasn't some rich old person. I wish they cared less about their internet presence and more about their customers comfort and the quality of their products. read more

I had to wait longer than expected for my futon frame to come in and then keep revisiting the store because I was missing a piece and a piece was defective and then wait even longer because they didn't have the piece to put my futon together. I've bought a couple futons and mattresses over the past couple years at Cotton Cloud. First, I like the products and that they are available in organic types. I also like that they make them locally. Finally I have had clear and consistent communications with the staff and found that they did what they said when they said they would. Also I think paying ~$400 for an organic locally made queen mattress is a really good deal. I'd definitely recommend these folks. read more

I purchased an all-cotton futon from this location about 3 months ago. I thought it was a great price ($125) for an all-cotton queen futon. I asked to see one on the floor because the futons for sale were already rolled and bagged. The salesperson showed me one which had a futon cover on it. I purchased the futon, brought it home, and I didn't realize until I put it on my daughter's bed that instead of cotton tufts, the futon was held together with plastic tabs! Huh? I have NEVER in my 30+ years of owning futons seen one with plastic tabs as tufts! I need to purchase two more futons, but unfortunately I will have to have them shipped since I won't be purchasing them locally. I don't know of another store in Portland that makesaffordable all-cotton futons. read more

Through the years Cotton Cloud has innovated but never lost the basics of a well-made futon with top quality materials. Let me start by saying that I am not quick with 5 stars. I have had nothing but a great experience with Cotton Cloud and my latex bed. First I found an online site that had a fabulous deal, free shipping, two king latex pillows thrown in! Looked good but I needed to lay on some beds to determine what I wanted for sure in terms of firmness (I am so over conventional beds! Big ol' honkin' waste of money and beggathon to get legitimate warranty help - but I digress). I went in to cotton cloud to lay around. Found a firmness that I loved and thought, "What the heck, maybe I will see if my local peeps will match the price." They did and through in the two king size pillows. The bed was not bad for off gassing but the pillows were latex yuk - which often happens with real latex. The short of it is that over the summer I kept airing them out and by Fall - say a month ago - they were not as stinky but not sleeponable for me. I contacted Cotton Cloud and told them what was up. They told me to come and pick some new pillows. They weren't funky about the return and let me choose from any and all that they had. Fabulous customer service. I have a friend who wants my exact bed now that he and his spouse have slept on mine. They are going to Cotton Cloud. Feels good to keep it local! read more

He answered all of my questions and talked to me about the differences in mattresses and explained the certifications since I was concerned about the mattress materials for my baby girl. My husband and I purchased a mattress and topper from Cotton Cloud. We were initially very pleased with both items and felt great about supporting a local company. Our main concern was how the products would age and hold up - specifically would the cotton and wool settle and create lumps in the topper and mattress? Our concerns were met with the following response. Yes, that would happen over time, but we could bring the products back in and they would redistribute and fluff them for us. If we did that, the products would last for years (the topper had a shorter lifespan than the mattress). We felt good about that and moved forward. Pretty quickly we realized the topper was settling and you could see two dips where each of us slept with a high point in the center. We weren't concerned or surprised as we knew we could bring the items in. My husband called to arrange this and was told they can't offer that anymore because of changes in the agreement with the factory. After further discussion the man asked him to bring the topper in. We removed it from the bed, loaded it in the car, drove to the store all for them to try and sell us a new one for a discounted price. Wow, that's fantastic. Glad we went through the trouble of bringing it down for that. My husband left frustrated after a conversation that was going nowhere. I followed up with a phone call and spoke with a manager. She kept repeating that their hands were tied and all they could do was offer us a discount on a new mattress...a new mattress that would have the same issue? Doesn't solve the problem. Isn't the factory YOUR factory? Owned by the same people? Curious to know what you are telling customers now on the lifespan of the products because it should be less than a year. The woman also told me I could hang it up on a close line and beat it to redistribute the filling (certainly not what I was told when we bought it). Overall, we are extremely disappointed in being lied to to make a sale. We wouldn't have purchased the product if it weren't for the promise that we could bring it back in. Now we're sleeping uncomfortably on a mattress that's pretty darn new. I do not recommend anyone shopping at this store or believing what the sales people tell you. Awful customer service. I am disappointed in the service from Cotton Cloud. We purchased two mattresses because we have slept on them at a local B and B several times and liked them. When I called, they had just one in stock, but they were happy to see if the production crew could finish the other by the date we needed it. I was clear that we needed to transport two queen mattresses in a mid size SUV. When we arrived to pick them up, they were not boxed, but folded, rendering it impossible to take them home in one trip. I had made it clear that was our goal and even waited to purchase until they could confirm both would be ready to go. When I contacted the store manager, Mack, by email, he referred me back to the salesperson, Deanna, who "did not remember" tte specifics we had discussed. She was apparently incapable of taking responsibility and did not offer to offset the second trip necessitated by their failure to compress and pack the mattresses for transport. I am optimistic we will be comfortable despite the inconvenience, but would hesitate to purchase again given the customer service. I will update the review once we have tried our new mattresses. read more

If you are looking for quality choice bedding and great consultation, you cannot find a better place - we are so lucky to have this resource in the area. First off, many bedding mattresses in general are treated with fire retardant chemicals - if the idea of soaking this up into your skin concerns you like it did me, go to these guys for options without this - I purchased and 8" latex mattress with a wool topper - both are hypoallergenic, the wool topper is resistant to dust mites and are already resistant to fire. They sell organic sheets and wool duvets here as well (not to mention other bedding needs such as pillows) - I decided to go on line for sheets initially. I noticed that I was sweating more than usual each night and was worried that the topper or the mattress were the culprit - I worked mainly with Mack at the store who was more than patient with me as I tried to determine the source - turns out it was the sheets and not the bedding. What impressed me most was that Mack was incredibly friendly and helpful in spite of the concern that I may have to return one or both of the items - there was never any blame towards other factors, just an acceptance that the items may not be a good fit for me. These days, getting service like this is the exception rather than the norm. I will recommend anyone looking for new bedding or futons to go here - A+...and don't forget to avoid microfiber or wrinkle free sheets from other places to reduce the potential of sleeping too hot - many of the anti-wrinkle sheets are also treated with chemicals in spite of being labeled as hypoallergenic. these folks are super patient and welcoming and willing to answer a bunch of questions. they have a nice variety of futon mattresses and care about their products. i did however have a disappointing experience with buying one of their sale bed frames that went on for a while. it seems to have been a returned frame that they thought was just missing one piece of hardware. so they ordered it and said i could pick it up in a week. a couple weeks later it was missing and so they had to reorder. i got it home and actually all the hard ware was missing. once it came in and i set up the bed there was still a small piece from the frame itself that was missing and first time on the bed the center support snapped in half. broke into 3 pieces! i found a piece of wood in my garage that i used as the center support but all in all a major hassle and not worth what i paid for it. i purchased the sublime mattress which was the most comfortable mattress and perfect for what i wanted but about 2 weeks later there was already a major indent where i'd been sleeping. that organic cotton compacted very quickly. hopefully it'll even out with very frequent flipping and it'll still be comfortable! they did tell me the organic cotton compacts because it comes in so fluffy but i didn't imagine they meant THAT quickly. i'd maybe suggest going full latex if you can. i'd give 3.5 stars if that was an option. i'll still go to them for any futon mattresses i buy in portland in the future and recommend them. i've done a lot of research on bedding materials regarding health and ethics of materials and trust them more than anyone in that regard. d update on 4/30/15 well, turns out the sublime did not hold up well. it's simply too compacted no matter which way we flip it and just not comfortable anymore after 2 years of use. quite disappointing. my partner and i are both pretty small people. i'm actually considering buying a standard mattress and dealing with the chemical off-gassing in order to have a comfortable on my body night's sleep! too tough of a choice! read more

In September I wrote a very negative review of this store because I was not happy with the futon I'd purchased to replace an older one from Cotton Cloud and believed it would be impossible to return it once we'd slept on it. (The futon was harder than I'd expected and the plastic ties uncomfortable.) Sossity -- a great employee! -- got back to me and she and the owner, Terry, were wonderful about resolving the problem. I blame myself for not listening to Sossity in the first place, but instead listening to another person who no longer works there about what kind of futon I'd had before and what I should get to replace it. My replacement futon came today and is just what I wanted, thick, plushy, and cloud-like. Everyone was really nice, even though I was angry, and no one tried to blame me, as most store employees do when something's wrong. My advice to anyone shopping here: listen to Sossity, she knows what she's talking about! read more
