Last year I decided to upgrade my bedding looking for long term quality and dumped a large chuck of change on some comforters, blankets, and rugs. A little over a year the comforter stitching is coming out, a seam has split open, the rugs (several $1000 on the rugs) are fraying on the edges and a quilt stitching is coming loose and pills so badly that I have to brush it clean constantly. Took pics in to show them at the local store in the Pearl and apparently they don't care, won't fix or repair, just said it was too bad. SO don't assume that because it's a fancy upscale store that it's any better than going to Ross, Target, or even Walmart.Unbelievable really. I feel so let down because I love the design decor. I own a table from West Elm that I purchased in 2019. it holds up and I love it. but recently I bought extremely expensive: - Christmas decorations - dishes - flatware and I literally feel SCAMMED. not dissatisfied, but SCAMMED. how can someone with taste sell me something that is so cheap and low quality for such a high price? Title: Worst Retail Experience of My Life - West Elm Is an Absolute Disaster I spent $9,539.80 at West Elm on June 7, 2025, and what followed has been an absolute nightmare. From the beginning, the incompetence was staggering. The sales associate made critical errors, including entering the wrong email address and wrong shipping address. I was also overcharged compared to the price displayed in-store. These are basic mistakes that no reputable company should make. Then came the delivery disaster. The furniture arrived well before the expected delivery date--without any notice--and was sent to a house I hadn't even moved into yet. I only found out because the previous homeowner contacted me saying they received my items. No call, no email, no tracking--nothing from West Elm. But that was just the start of the chaos. The coffee table arrived broken, and the sofa is defective and uneven. I reported the sofa issue on July 3. It's now July 25, and I've received zero response. Absolutely unacceptable. As for the broken coffee table, I returned it and re-purchased using a gift card. Due to yet another sales mistake--again, the wrong email address--West Elm refunded the gift card to the wrong email. When I contacted customer service, they had the audacity to tell me to create a fake email account to retrieve it. Unbelievable. In the end, I was forced to wait for the gift card by mail, and I am still missing two gift cards as of today. On top of all this, West Elm miscalculated my sales tax, and instead of refunding the overcharge, a customer service rep told me they owe me nothing. So they make mistakes, and I pay for it. Let's talk about the so-called "White Glove" service. They charged me hundreds of dollars for it and yet failed to properly assemble or install anything. I've had to explain my situation to dozens of clueless reps. No one takes responsibility, no one follows up, and there's zero accountability. I cannot stress this enough: Do NOT order from West Elm, especially any items that require delivery or White Glove service. This company is completely disorganized, unprofessional, and utterly incapable of handling large orders or resolving issues. Nearly two months later, and I'm still fighting for basic resolutions. Went to purchase a set of holiday glasses as a Christmas gift. Walked in and went towards the cash wrap where many of the employees were and no one acknowledged me being there. Looked around the store to try and find the glasses I was looking for and did. Went back up to the registers to get help and the first person I see is a guy (I will say he did have gorgeous long hair) handing someone a wrapped package, so in my head am assuming they offer gift wrapping services too, then as he turned away did the look me up and down condescending look and continued to walk away. I was wearing a decent outfit coming from an event at a nearby store too, so not like I came in wearing sweats looking raggedy. I had to say something to get his attention and asked about the glasses. Said they weren't sure and asked someone else and I said again I was looking for these specific glasses and would like to buy a set. The second woman said oh I think all we have is on the display table. No one offered to check the computer to confirm or to help me get the glasses or anything, so I went over to see and carried the last four they had up to the counter and yet again everyone is just hanging out talking to each other. One woman helped me check out, but while this is happening, the guy from earlier is telling a story about a customer to his coworker extremely loud and dramatically being very rude about how the person was concerned about the homeless people in the area. Could barely hear what the woman ringing me up was saying he was so loud and distracting. Didn't ask if I wanted a gift receipt or the glasses gift wrapped. Even with it being less than two weeks till Christmas. Had to ask for a gift receipt and then it ended up it was after the transaction had gone through and she seemed annoyed to have to reprint it to be a gift receipt. If you want a planter that's in the store, they will tell you that you must order it and along with ordering must pay shipping and must wait 3 months because it's on back order when there are plenty of that specific planter In store- I saw at least 2. If you get furniture, they won't load it because it's apparently "a liability!" Ironic because other stores from their chain will help you load without a problem. I had to drive back and forth because the item "was too heavy" for 2 people to pull out- came back 2 days later and 1 person (same person that initially couldn't lift it with a 2nd person) was able to pull it without issue. When the item was loaded, I noticed on the box it's the wrong item. The girl did not pay attention to what I requested and I wasted my time/gas driving from WA to Oregon 3x within a span of 2 days. Just tried to buy a planter that I didn't want to wait to be shipped. It was the last one in store apparently and there was a price on the bottom of it with no for display sign only anywhere on it and they would not sell me it. It is not a big deal in and out of itself but i specifically went to the store to see what was available. This pot was also on clearance. Honestly, I think it was racial. I was the only person no one greeted. I know because firstly I heard associates greet everyone. I then specifically went to the front desk to get some help and only then was I helped. I had a small planter I was going to buy. I asked who I was told later was the assistant manager that I wanted the planter up front. She grabbed the smaller planter and started looking up. I told her that I knew the price for that one but wanted to get the price for the other one. She then said, " I am checking the price for the bigger one". I then explained that I didn't think it was the same design. I'll give her credit for trying to hide her annoyance and she asked me to direct her to the planter. I did and then she said they didn't have any in stock. So I asked if I could buy that one. She said no and gave me a condencending smile with no explanation. Something seemed really off about the whole experience which is why after I left I came back to verify with someone else. I told her the woman at the counter had said there were no planters aside from that one and I couldn't buy it. At which point she said oh the manager said that? I asked," She is the manager?" She replied she was the acting manager for today...so again I'm getting really weird vibes about how she is answering the question. At this point I tell her I came phisically to the store because I wanted the pot today. She said management decided what was available for sale at the store or not. I told her I understood but it was weird because it was a sale item online, these kind of planters had been around for a while, and that there was nothing to differentiate it from things actually available for purchase. She clearly did not care and proceeded to patronize me with her previous explanations. I told her after she stated she understood my frustration, which she clearly did not, that it didn't take much effort to put up DISPLAY ONLY signs. Anyways I let her have the last word and left. Now I'm leaving this review. To upper management if you ever wonder why sales go down...this kind of service and lack of in-store products is why. Having recently downsized to a condo, which I'm decorating with a mid century vibe, West Elm seemed like an obvious place to visit. The store is filled with a variety of items for every room in the house. Furniture, bedroom duvets and sheets, dishes, rugs, pillows, lamps, vases and more. I've made several purchases - coffee table, duvet, arched lamp, decorative vases, diamond mirror - and while I go into the store to see and touch everything, I prefer to order online. The staff at this store is ridiculously inattentive! Other than when I am at the counter paying for something, trying to get assistance, to get someone to answer questions or help is impossible. At one point I considered buying some chairs but I could not get anyone to help me figure out the process or talk through selections. All I got was, "there are fabric samples over there." After reading the reviews here, I see it isn't just me! I thought maybe it was an age thing. Seriously. But seems as if everyone gets bad service. West Elm, customers are your business! When you are dealing with retail sales people you really would like to hope they are going to be honest as possible but unfortunately that isn't always the case. My salesman here disappeared into thin air after I ordered. I was going to be moving and was looking for a new sofa to fit the space in my new place. I had went to a lot of furniture stores and had a couple picked out in different places. I went to West Elm during one of their 20% off sales and found a sofa/chaise I liked. Now mind you even at 20% off their inventory is not cheap but it's good quality. My salesman was young, very charismatic and made me a lot of promises he shouldn't of. He apparently wanted the commission. I had to order the sofa and was told if I ordered it in the store I would get it much faster than ordering it online. I found out later this was not true. I was told I would have my sofa in 2-4 weeks, it was in stock at the manufacturer and just needed to be shipped. The delivery ended up being 8 weeks after continual phone calls and being promised it would be there the following week and I didn't show up and then I would have to call them all over again and hear the same story. Finally I gave them a date that I expected delivery and that If it was not delivered on that date I was going to cancel the purchase and demand a refund. It showed up! But unfortunately every time I look at it I think about what it took to get it here. My understanding is you will get your purchase faster if you order it online. I parked my car outside of West Elm to go and grab a cabinet from my friend's apartment, but when I got to my vehicle with cabinet in tow....I was in trouble. I was certain it was going to fit into my car, but no dice. I sat there staring at both the cabinet and trunk for 10 minutes. I looked behind me at West Elm and thought "furniture store...they are bound to have tools..." and proceeded inside. A gentleman greeted me and I made my request to borrow a hex key in order to disassemble the monstrosity and Tetris it into my trunk. He said he would be more than happy to help and called a fellow employee to fetch me a tool, the employee returned moments later with a. Handful of different fittings. I went back to my car, got the cabinet taken apart, packed away and returned the tools to the employees. The fellow even let me keep the tool that fit. Thank you so much for your kindness! (P.S. What a disaster! We purchased a lot of attractive and expensive furniture in September and had a great experience with the Portland, Oregon, manager, Matt Forman. We were told the furniture would be delivered in October. When we didn't get an update we checked the automated system it said the order was delayed till November. Since we were still not contacted for delivery we kept calling the automated system for updates and were given delays that pushed our delivery back to December and then January and finally May or June of 2023! Frequent efforts to address the delays got us no where and promised return calls from Matt and the "Escalation Team" never materialized. What a disaster! We finally asked for a refund after we couldn't be offered a delivery date for the foreseeable future. Never again. read more

We spent 30 minutes trying out furniture and not one employee interacted with us. Multiple sales associates deliberately avoided us, averted eye contact and just seemed extremely pretentious. Furniture was ikea quality at triple the price. So we wouldn't have purchased it anyway. The whole experience was terrible. We have been looking to buy some new furniture and stepped into the store after looking online. The customer service was pretty limited. We were able to find employees, but we left without answers to our questions , because the answer seemed to be "I don't know" from all three salespeople we spoke to. The particular item we wanted was not in the showroom at the size we wanted. Getting a feel for the furniture is tough in the show room because they pile so many of their other items. For example, we were trying to decide if a dining room table was wide enough for 2 people to sit across from each other without placemats overlapping. The center of the table was just COVERED in piles of dishes and displays of flatware and linens . Seeing it in person was not much better than looking online. Several items were not labeled with name or price . Overall, an unpleasant shopping experience and we did but the items we planned to buy when we had walked in. read more

We were in the market for a new couch and after weeks of looking online at a bunch of sites we found a West Elm design we liked. To make the final call on fabric style and color we stopped into this location and we weren't expecting much given recent reviews on this site. We were so pleasantly surprised when Alyson joined us to walk through the large samples of different materials, discuss pros and cons of each based on our lifestyle, and give us small swatches to take home. She even found two sofas in the store for us to try out-- one that had the same fabric we were planning to get and one that was the closest design to what we had picked out. There were also other employees helping other customers, so if there was an issue it seems fixed. Oh West Elm, what an up and down relationship we have..... mostly up. I don't remember how my borderline obsession with WE started, but it is slightly problematic. Our relationship has become a little more co-dependent since I moved from a 1,000 sq ft house (that was packed full of furniture that was mostly Craigslist scores, hand-me downs and IKEA from my college days) to a 3,000 sq foot house (it is a 100+ year old beauty that I hope to live in for the rest of my life, and must be furnished accordingly). So here is the good... I have bought a lot of merchandise at WE both online and in store- My king headboard and frame, my queen headboard and frame, several duvet and pillow covers (sadly their sheet sets are not deep enough for my mattress), my shower curtain, a white pitcher I love, cute little rocking birds, the list goes on. What I am trying to say is my palms sweat when I am within 5 miles of the store and feel absolutely compelled to stop in even if I don't need anything, I think that the fact that I was shopping online at WE at 3:13 am (stone sober I may add) and realized I needed to write this review is rather telling. Here is the bad, and trust me it's bad, as in I should have written a 2-3 star review bad, but their design and customer service is soooo good I am willing to work past it. Last year, in June or July I bought my queen bed online the Tall Grid Tufted Headboard in white leather and the Chunky Wood Bed Frame, also in white. It was delivered partially assembled, some parts were missing and it looked used. And the perfect white headboard had a scuff mark. I called customer service- they arranged for the old bedframe to be sent back to UPS and had a new one delivered. They refunded me the cost of shipping and $100ish for the scuffed headboard- which I opted to keep. Great, thank you very much. Now keep in mind I am not handy and Matt takes care of 'this sort of thing' assembling furniture etc in our house. So he was frustrated that pieces were missing, and that he had to disassemble one bed frame and reassemble the new one (It was sent in a package, as in not assembled). On our way home from Skymainia Lodge for our 6 year anniversary in October we stopped in (remember what I said about that 5 mile radius?) The scroll headboard I had been eying was on sale for $350, down from $600-700ish, score! The Simple Bed Frame is what was available in store in King size, great, sold. Again, I am getting a huge discount and saving on shipping. So Matt dutifully assembles another bed frame with a friend. I know at this time you must be thinking Matt is a saint, and you are right. So the bed is beautiful and I am the happiest girl alive. Fast forward to just a couple days past their 30 day return policy, Matt sits on his side of the bed and it breaks!! Like falls to the ground and splinters. I promptly call customer service the next day (after Matt disassembles the bed far past our bedtime the night before). Well they tell me to call the store, I spoke to Julie and she arranged to have the broken frame picked up and a new Chunky Wood Bed Frame, assembled, delivered to me, the fact it was past the 30 day return policy was a non-issue. Bottom line: they made it right. Second bottom line: buy a sturdy low bed frame if you are shopping at WE and someone who sleeps in your bed weighs over 200 lbs (sorry honey). So for those of you that are still with me, you must be furniture stopping, congratulations on your obvious patience, and thank you for putting up with my average humor, bravo. I will end with a few bullet points: 1. My husband is a total saint, seriously, and if I had to do all of this myself I would be foaming at the mouth. 2. If you are considering buying a bed (or two) from WE you have been warned. 3. I love all of West Elm's furniture, but I have only ever ordered from their online store until I recently decided to do a living room overhaul and wanted to go into one of their actual stores. Luckily for me, there is a location near my home in downtown Portland. My experience there was fantastic! The staff is fabulous; I worked with Crimson, and she went above and beyond to help me get what I needed. She really knows her stuff! I can't wait to schedule an appointment for her to do an in-home visit when I revamp my guest room next. If you want someone who really knows what they're talking about when it comes to design, go to West Elm in Portland and ask for Crimson. She helped me to design the living room of my dreams! Note: I've read some of the negative reviews here, and they all seem to have to do with ordering from the website, return policies with West Elm on the whole, etc. I get it, but it seems to be that those reviews belong elsewhere, perhaps on the West Elm site itself. The frame on the Spencer Recliner cracked just over one year after delivery of the product. Because it was over a year (just barely), they wouldn't cover the cracked frame. A large sofa, a love seat and an ottoman. This all WAS NOT CHEAP. Like at all. Here's the kicker...we ordered it in July 2020! We got the loveseat and ottoman in January 2021 and they just emailed us and said they not only lost the big sofa but it's now discontinued! Nearly a year later! We had just left Athleta in NW Portland and the staff was terrible; unfriendly, unhelpful, and generally snooty. NOT SO at West Elm. The moment we walked in, we were greeted WITH A SMILE! As we perused around the entire store we were offered help and greeted along the way...and it wasn't annoying! I had many questions and ALL were answered. I met the manager; she was fabulous.
