I apologize in advance for the long post.
This morning I'm just about to celebrate victory - I'm in the check-out line! And then then one of the blue vest clip-boarded vipers attacks me at the register.
Him: "May I check your rebate today?"
Me: "Sure." (I was stupidly thinking he was making sure I got the instant manufacturer's rebate advertised on several of the products I was buying).
Him: "It's only $55 for you to upgrade your membership.......blah blah blah"
Me: (In a nutshell) No thank you.
Him: "Why?"
Me: (Insert my perfectly rational explanation here now).
Him: "But it's risk free. If you don't get the whole $55 rebate we'll give you your $55 dollars back."
Me: "No thank you."
Him: (Insert his "basically you're an idiot speech" now).
Me: (Keep in mind I'm trying to remember my partner's PIN number for the debit card I'm trying to pay with, the boxer wants to know if I want boxes, and this guy won't take the hint). "No thank you, I'll pass."
He finally leaves me alone! For fuck's sake! Is the pain finally over?
No.
The checker (Alicia W.) starts blathering on (not to me, to the boxer helping her) about how she just doesn't understand why people don't upgrade. It makes no sense to her at all.
When Alicia W. finally sees the look on my face and realizes that I do not appreciate being called an idiot right in front of my face she tries to recover by involving me in the conversation.
She looks right at me and says, "So why don't you want to upgrade?"
WTH? I just navigated your parking lot, issued at least 60 smiling "pardon me"s to your crazy mob of shoppers, gave you hundreds of dollars, fended off your upgrade Nazi, and after witnessing the whole exchange you can't just comment on the weather and say "Have a nice day?" Why the fuck do we need to cover this upgrade issue AGAIN?????? And what business is it of yours anyways?
Me: (With eye contact in my "I'm about to go postal" voice) "I just got "the business" from HIM. I don't need it from YOU TOO."
Her: (Silence. Continues to ring up.)
Me: "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be rude." I don't know WHY I felt it necessary to apologize because I was direct, not rude, and she deserved it.
Her: (All of a sudden she's now chit-chatting with the boxer again.) "Gosh, it can be a bit much all of this upgrade stuff. "No" ought to be enough."
Ya think? Ya think you might not want to harass your customers FOR YEARS about upgrades? Ya think you might not want to talk about them in front of their faces? Ya think you might want to APOLOGIZE?
The person doing the boxing became instantly sugary sweet to me. I've never heard more "Have a great day's from one person. Alicia W.? Nothing. Wow. Well, when I apologized she had the generosity to say, "That's ok." Super.
All I wanted to do was get in, get out, give Costco my hundreds of dollars and make it as painless as possible.
And yet, I left choking back tears pissed that these people pushed me to the point of snapping at them. I'd rather they just know their place.
I'd rather have NO service than BAD service. read more
