Visited September 23rd Friday Evening 21.30
Nicely located on the sea front and with a good reputation amongst locals, we were very much looking forward to our visit there. Upon arriving at 21.30 we could see there were only two tables being used, the place was practically empty. Entering we were told that if we wanted to dine we would only be able to have one course because they close at 22.30, on a Fridy night, really? We agreed as our B&B was only a short walk up the road so convenience was the key.
We chose our one courses and a bottle of red wine, ordered and was then told that we had to spend a minimum of £15 per person! Not including the wine! Even with a starter I couldn't have made my bill up to £15. The waitress was friendly but kept making it worst by suggesting it was a high class place and features expensive cutlery and dining cloths. Eventually the waitress said that she would do it this once only, feeling miffed we got up to leave and after puttting our coats on the waitress got frantic and said she had put the order through and would we stay. Kept apologising, which while nice, kind of detracts from the fact that nowhere outside does it say that we had to spend £15 per person minimum, or that she failed to tell us this upon entering.
After all that I have to say the food was very nice, especially the Kung Po Chicken, but our whole evening was blotted by the agitation caused by such a ridiculous experience. Would we use Cosmo Oriental again? No not a chance, if it had been after 22.00 we could understand the time scale rule, but trying to hoodwink customers into spending a minimum charge in an empty restaurant is just plain daft. 1/5 read more
