Came here off the recommendation of a few locals, really cool space having converted an old railroad station. Friendly service behind the car and nice crushed ice diet pepper. The burger was a bit burnt but it was still tasty, not sure if that's just how they make it. Overall just a fun experience.

This restaurant was packed when we got in the lady said it would be a 30-45 min wait which was fine because we really wanted to try it. We did wait right around 40 min to be seated. It's in an old train depot which was very cool. A lot of exposed wood beams and also pictures of what it used to be. It is a little loud but it was still fun. The restaurant serves barbecue, and oh man it was good. I got the pork shoulder and it was tender and juicy. I also got the beans which had apple in them. I thought they would be sweet but they were really good. We did have the cornbread and it was good too. We didn't have time for dessert but would have liked that too I'm sure. We will be back here again.

Come on in for a delicious carving of tender and flavor rich beef ribs as well as a creative selection of your favorite craft. The side dishes of street corn and potato hash is over the top served with honey rich corn muffins. The wait staff was friendly and greeted everyone as if family. The total environment was full of cheer and pleasurable fun as everyone seemed to enjoy their favorite meal and libations.

We stopped by here in between basketball games. We were seated quickly (i'm sure the fact that there was an IA State Basketball game helped). Service was attentive. Pig candy - delish Cornbread - delish Hushbuppies - delish (i could have gone for more sauce drizzle) Burnt ends - mixed reviews (husband loved, son & i weren't keen on the flavor) Brisket chili - very good and unique -Brisket meal - husband thought it was a little dry

Wow! Absolutely worth the wait on a busy Sunday to grab brunch with my ISU student. He is a bit of a foodie so he was also impressed with the menu. Not a crumb was left and we were stuffed with all the BBQ brunch wondefulness. And what a great value for the portions and quality. We sat inside but I would love to sit outside next time.

lunch special - didn't expect the pork shoulder to be in a bun - it doesn't state that in the menu

Excellent service- great hazy beer and brisket, pulled pork, ribs, cole slaw, and brussels sprouts. Turkey was not as great- still good but a bit on the dry side. Fun vibe.

Possibly one of the best restaurants I've ever been to, with I think the best ribs I've ever eaten. From entering the space to being seated in an upstairs loft space and having conversations with our wait staff, it was a fantastic experience the whole time. Our kids are not adventurous eaters so for them we ordered just a simple burger, but the waitress was happy to oblige the request and the kids absolutely demolished them. We had the pig candy and cornbread appetizers and they were fantastic. I had ribs and my husband had a sandwich, and both were very good. Also, the pineapple coleslaw might have been the best coleslaw I've ever had as well. I wasn't sure what to expect but it was fantastic. Absolutely recommend stopping here when you're in Ames. You won't be sorry.

Ribs that are not only flavorful but so incredibly tender with homemade chips. Beef brisket with corn.

After reading reviews as well as a recommendation from our hotel, we decided to eat dinner at Cornbred. All three of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals and will definitely return! The restaurant has a main floor, upper and a nice patio. Our server was very friendly and made several recommendations. Overall a wonderful experience! The only thing we'd change is the chips as they didn't have much flavor and seemed to be overcooked.

This review is on the precipice of a 4.5 star review. Upsides: Welcomed immediately upon entering. All staff members that I interacted with were very friendly and seemed to be enjoying their jobs. I started with a single order of the pig candy (I got two slices?), as well as an order of the cornbread mini muffins. These were both fantastic! Not overly sweet; but subtle. I do think the mini muffins would be slightly better if some honey was drizzled over the top. I might be able to subside off the pig candy alone next time... The rib was truly off the bone. I wish I had ordered more of them. Good flavor; no chewy parts to them at all. The hallelujah potatoes themselves were very good. I could have done without the cornflake topping. Beans were awesome; good smoke flavor throughout. I saved the sausage and half the sides for my lunch tomorrow; I'll update when I eat that. The turkey was very tender...nice thick pieces. On the advice of another bar patron; I used the sweet & sassy sauce. Good flavor balance. The vinegar sauce is also very flavorful; but is intended to go with the pork shoulder. Downside: The menu needs to provide a little more guidance; descriptions of the menu items would be nice. It's a "me thing", but I don't like having to pepper the staff with a bunch of questions. Also a "me thing"; the slice of bread was put on top of the beans, meaning that parts of the bread were ruined. Some kind of butter would have been good with this too.

We had great food here. I tried their brisket chili. It's one of the best, most unique dishes I've ever had. Brisket on top was just what you would expect: Smokey, tender, flavorful. But then you got the chili components too. Putting what I consider "cornbread paste" as the base is perfect. That sweet, corn flavor mixes beautifully on the palate with the chili and barbecue flavors. We finished the meal with bread pudding. They change flavors all the time so I had raspberry bread pudding. Our biggest mistake was ordering two. One was more than enough for three people. That said, I did not share my leftover dessert. Wait to get in Friday homecoming weekend at 5:45 pm was about 30 minutes. Had we come at 6:30 pm, I think there would have been no wait time. On the patio, they played music bingo to we stayed a bit longer to enjoy two rounds. Only poor experience was the waitress. She was pretty slow. We also think she forgot to put in our appetizer order. I will come here again next time in Ames, probably will not try a different dish.

Amazing food, atmosphere. Ordered burnt ends - Amazing. Hallelujah potatoes were full over flavor, loved the added crunch. Coleslaw was fine but not special like everything else. Others in the party order the Brisket & Chill. Maybe the coolest dish I've ever seen. Wonderful place. Wish it was closer.

First visit to Cornbred and really enjoyed it! We sat outside and the atmosphere was great. Started with a cocktail from the outside bar. Waitress was very pleasant and helpful. We ordered a starter- candied bacon. How can this not be great? Sweet, smoky flavor. Had the sandwich -Three Little Pigs. The pulled pork, bacon and ham was delicious with the pepper jelly and slaw on the toasted bread. Would recommend Cornbred!

Father's Day! We are a group of 5 today. Our other plans got derailed. We were in search of a tenderloin for Dad. We saw the photos online and headed here. It's about noon, and we had a little bit of a wait. Greeted warmly by the hostest. There was seating outside but it was too hot. There is also seating on the main level plus stairs up both directions to a loft area. We asked for seating on the main level. The wait was going to be about 20 minutes. While we were waiting, I snagged a menu to take a look. I noticed that Tenderloin was not on the menu. I asked and was informed that tenderloins were not served on Sunday brunch. Luckily dad was low key and went with the flow. The vibe of the restaurant is farm town, farm house, and rustic. There is merchandise you can buy right inside the door. When seated, the waiter was super friendly. He complimented us over and over on different things. We pretty much knew what we wanted. The menu is limited, but the food is on point. The flavors are wow! I really enjoyed the brisket burrito. We all enjoyed our meals. No one had any complaints. 2 people had the poutine. I got to snag a couple of bites from the hubby, and it was so full of flavors. I don't like gravy, but I would 100% get it. If we lived in Ames we would be back sooner, but I still want to make the trip back to try more. Need to come try the Tenderloin.

    Ribs were fantastic.

They seem shocked at this, but I wondered why they just didn't get a replacement! Great service by that server. She was also our server and did a fantastic job with us. It's amazing how many restaurants are closed on Sunday in Ames... Not much of a demand for Sunday dine-in business in a college town I guess...? Lol Fortunately Boulder Tap House is open from at least 1100 AM until 1000 PM every day of the week. Boulder Tap House sits just off of the Southeast corner of South Duff and East Lincoln Way. It has a large parking lot and it's easy to access. We were greeted right away when we walked in and shown to a booth. Seating is a mix of low and high top tables and chairs, booths, and standard stool seating around the bar. There are TONS of TVs around the dining room and bar; most of which had football games running on them. Our server was named Zach. He stopped by shortly after we were seated, introduced himself and dropped off menus etc., and took our drink orders (Pepsi products). He was back shortly with the first round of drinks and to take our food order. We ordered: 1x Unsweetened ice tea 1x Cherry Pepsi 1x Cheddar house made Boulder cheese cubes 1x Medium (12) order of wings with their honey BBQ sauce. Blue cheese on the side 1x Side salad with ranch dressing 1x Swicy burger and fries Zach was attentive and personable and provided good service the entire meal. He made sure to check on us several times and kept our drink glasses topped off. I HIGHLY recommend the cheese cubes! Choose cheddar, white cheddar, or pepper jack cheese. Served with Burger Co. sauce. The Burger Co. sauce reminded me of a spicy ranch. These things are HUGE. Each will take you at least two bites. They were hot and fresh right out of the fryer. I cut mine in half with a fork to make them more bite size... And to avoid 3rd degree burns from the molten cheese! Lol The wings were sauced well and cooked perfectly! Very good! The swicy burger is where I'm torn. I see other reviews of this burger and everyone really seems to like it. It tasted okay... But I feel like it's trying too hard. Here's how it's described on the menu: "A little bit of sweet and a little bit of spice. A 6oz Angus burger patty topped with ghost pepper jack cheese, fried jalapeños, spicy peach sauce, butter leaf lettuce, tomato and pickles. Served on a toasted bun." First of all there was no tomato or pickles on mine... I didn't request them to be held so I'm not sure what happened there. There was a piece of lettuce...it was entirely covered up by the patty. I didn't even know it was on there until I bit into it. I was okay with this. The beef didn't taste fresh to me. I grew up in a small rural Iowa town of 500 where my dad was the city maintenance man. His boss (the mayor) also ran the local meat locker... It tasted like an overcooked frozen patty. Though I believe Boulder Tap House advertises fresh ground chuck...never frozen...at a lot of their locations. I'm not sure how it's distributed to the Ames location. In any case the taste of the beef was overshadowed by the topping to the point it became a texture v. the focus of the sandwich. All of the burgers listed using the 6 oz Angus patty are advertised the same way. Very heavy on the specialty toppings... The regular burger on the menu is advertised as a 8 oz burger patty (not specifically Angus). Same with the Smashburger (two 4 oz patties). Maybe the patties on these two items are different quality? I took a small piece of the burger itself and it wasn't great. It had the taste you come to expect with frozen patties. It was just meh. It lacked the flavor of fresh beef. I expected better for a $16 burger and fry combo. I kind of felt like the last burger I got at a Chili's was better meat. Now the fries though... Lightly battered and then fried! Served hot. On the thinner side... But these were exceptionally good...! I'd probably avoid the burgers on any future trips to a Boulder Tap House. But that's just me! If you like the novelty of topping and don't care about the quality of the beef. You do you! And I could be wrong about the patty...that's just how it tasted to me. I would go back. However next time I'd stick to the appetizers, wings, or one of the other sandwiches! Our meal overall was good. Payment is done with your server at the table. Everything was reasonably priced. Zach was terrific!
