The Canary - Up close and personal with my apricot and coffee bean drink.

The Canary

Whether you're the world's biggest gin fan or you're still unsure about the stuff, the Canary Gin…read moreBar is an absolute must when in Bath for libations. The ground floor offers 200+ gins and the Cocktails of Gin Austen menu (oh, yes, you read that right - it's "gin's transatlantic journey to New York"; it's "gin of a different persuasion"; and they're all just £9). Gin is not my preferred liquor, but these extremely well crafted, balanced, flavorful drinks have me wondering if my previous feelings about gin were totally misinformed. The Big Apple (featuring Bath Gin [what they make here], hopped rhubarb Bath Gin, apple schnapps, escubac, lime juice, and tonic) is really refreshing, but it's the Little Italy that I felt the most feelings for: Bath Gin, coffee-infused campari, cocchi torino, and apricot liqueur. The presentation is straight out of a magazine, the ingredients are all delicious, and it packs a serious wallop. "In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you." Is that too much for a drink or a bar? Ahhhh, you'll see what I mean when you check it out. Upstairs, The Distiller's Bar, has more gins and cocktails but I never made it up there. I liked to tuck into the downstairs right when they opened with a good book and a good cocktail and people watch. The owner was frequently (always?) there bringing the merriment, too, so the atmosphere always felt quite cheery and welcoming!

Small bar (the downstairs especially), but worth a visit. I had no idea there was a local gin in…read moreBath until my friend took me here, and I"m glad he did. The Bath gin was delicious and wonderfully smooth. I had a G&T, which they made with an artisinal tonic and tossed a bay leaf in the glass... if you're a gin fan, this is the place for you. By the way, Bath gin price isn't listed - it costs £7/single. If the downstairs is crowded, try the upstairs - it covers the whole length of the downstairs and was pretty empty when I was there, while the downstairs was packed. They do have a few bottled beers (and Peroni on tap) and whiskeys and vodkas if you're not a gin fan... but why wouldn't you be?

DISTASTEFUL LYING STAFF Myself and my partner went to bath…read morethis weekend for our anniversary, we decided to go into this bar for a few drinks and a light lunch, all was well until we got accused of giving and taking drugs from a group of girls (who they couldn't control) the maitre'd had a terrible attitude towards the whole situation. She come over to our table, saying "we are going to have to give you your bill and you have to leave" I asked what for and she replied because you are doing drugs at the table. She then followed it up by saying " I see it. the table opposite see it and the whole restaurant see it" I was gob smacked and said what a false statement and complete lie she's just made up! All I was doing was being polite and amicable to the drunk girl, trying to get her away from me and my partner.(which the table opposite clapped and said "fair play guys you handled that drunk girl better then we would have") When I challenged the matrie'd she said she will get the CCTV to prove this is what happened. I waited for another 10 minutes and no one come to the table so I called the manager. I spoke to the manager and said I've just been accused of selling and taking drugs from this girl, please get the CCTV because maitre'd said she will get it to prove we had done such a thing! Conveniently the CCTV wasn't actually working in the area we was sitting in. By now my partner was upset and and panicking, I asked them to call the police to search me if this was what I was being accused of and nothing. The manager didn't have anything to say all he replied with was, I don't think that's what's happened I don't think you gave them anything I think they gave you something. Like this made it any better. The manager was as spineless as his maitre'd the whole company needs to go onto a customer training course and they need to think before they start accusing people of doing crimes on their premises. Absolutely disgusted it runined what was supposed to be a great weekend away. And I will be taking this further then just leaving a review.

Hall & Woodhouse - Full English Breakfast

I always find myself at Hall & Woodhouse when I'm in Bath. It's hard not to: the location in city…read morecentre is great, the interior is super spacious and offers a variety of seating options (I've never had a problem finding getting a spot for a midday, midweek pint and order of chips), the decor is charming (think: treehouse, traditional old English pub, and antiques store vibes), and the rooftop bar on a sunny day can't be missed (and, I'm pretty sure it's open all day). My exchange with the staff recently has been super limited: I walk in, ask if I can go to the rooftop, they tell me I have to order at the bar, I ask for G&T (single, sometimes a double), they hand me a balloon glass with the gin in it and a mini bottle of tonic, I make my own way to the rooftop, I enjoy my drink for as long as I like. I like this transaction. The rooftop bar though? IT NEEDS SOME LOVE. There's seagull poop everywhere, the tables themselves are always dirty with trash, there's a layer of grime on absolutely everything, I'm not sure where all the greenery/plants have gone to (probably booted to make more space for chairs)... it's just super rundown, which is such a shock when you see how nice the restaurant itself is. There's a real "Instagram Vs Reality" thing happening here when you see photos on their website than experience it yourself. Other things to note: 1. H&W doesn't take bookings for the rooftop, it's walk-ins only! 2. They are a dog friendly restaurant! 3. It seems they've recently leaned into offering more gluten-free options! 4. Some vegan options available: sweet potato falafel, a cauliflower salad, a curry, a burger.

I didn't realize Hall & Woodhouse was a British chain restaurant until it was too late...but no problem! Staff was friendly enough for a pub, the modern yet retro ambience was clean, colorful, and amusing. £18 Sunday Roast with Roast Beef...pretty good overall! The slices of roast beef were tender, meaty, and tasty, just a bit on the chewier side. British Beef has never been quite as tender as American Beef. The roasted potatoes were wonderfully hot and crispy, and roasted veg just find, as well as the Yorkshire pudding. £17 The H&W Smokie Fish Pie...chunks of smoked white fish, classic béchamel sauce, cheesy crushed new potato top, mixed leaf salad...pretty good overall! £8 Sticky Toffee Pudding...sticky, buttery, gooey, and oh so good! Just as good as the independent pubs and restaurants!
