So, even I travel here quite a bit, I can't say that I know Paris all that well for food. That being said, I've had a handful of meals in Paris at Michelin star restaurants. I don't believe I'm exaggerating to say that Neva has Michelin star - level cuisine or just slightly below (but only because the preparations are fairly simple while many Michelin star restaurants are known for more complex dishes). I literally cannot say enough positive things about dinner at at Neva. First the amuse bouche--it was a piece of octopus over pureed garlic and I think celery root. I don't even love octopus (usually too chewy), but it was so tender and tasty. I knew we were in for a fabulous meal. Next, I ordered the foie gras--it was a terrine/mouse style and absolutely delicious and seasoned to perfection. Then my friend and I ordered the beef chop for 2 people (I thought it was for 4 people as it was so huge)--cooked to a perfect rare/medium rare and absolutely delicious and served with some chimichurri and some sort of pureed potato/cream sauce that reminded me of the potatoes i've had at L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon. Then finished with the chocolate sphere--it's a rounded chocolate sphere with ice cream inside--and then they pour a hot chocolate sauce on top and it melts! Absolutely fabulous. Small, but tasty wine list (we ordered a Burgundy and Bordeaux). And great value--the 3 course menu (starter, main, and dessert was 41 Euros, with some additional supplements for more expensive dishes). Highly recommended! I can't wait to come back during my next trip to Paris in a few months. More memorable than the 1 star michelin restaurant I ate at my trip before.

The menu is traditional French. We started with a tomato salad with feta and chopped iceberg lettuce with a vinaigrette dressing. It was good. We paired our upcoming meats with two bottles of French burgundy wines, which were excellent. Our main courses were the steak frites and the Lyonnaise lentils. The steak was cooked perfectly with an added sauce. Fries were thick-cut and perfectly fried. The Lyonnaise lentils were very good as well with deep and satisfying flavors. I'd never had them before but basically it was a bed of lentils in herbs and a vinaigrette dressing. Around the lentils were bacon and sausage pieces. Dessert for me was an ice cream with Grand Marnier sauce. I rarely get a dessert for myself but this was so good I could have had 2. The ice cream came in a disc with the sauce on the bottom and a light cookie crumble layer on top. Delicious. Interestingly, this is right next to the yard site where the original statue of liberty was assembled. It is now an unrelated building but there is a photo on the wall of the restaurant showing its construction. Tres bien!

So I called to let them know we would be late, "no problem, we will wait for you" was the response, putting us at ease. As we were seated the first thing I noticed was a plate of pata negra, that lovely black footed Iberico ham from Spain, sliced perfectly thin. They also had ceps that evening, the French porcini, simply pan roasted with herbs, shallots and a nice jus. For plats, my wife had the skate, perfectly moist thanks to being left on its cartilage, accompanied with fresh haricot verts and a nice sauce. For me I kept with my pig theme, with a lovely, perfectly cooked, bone in black footed iberico pig pork chop with white beans and chorizo and lovely jus. I don't usually order pork in a restaurant unless it is a braise or BBQ since it is usually overcooked and dry. Not this one, it was moist and succulent. All four dishes were absolutely awesome. We had been drinking a lot of champagne and northern Rhone all week, so we wanted something different, something medium bodied and a red Burgundy seemed like the obvious choice. My problem is unlike other regions of France, Burgundy has always baffled me. Way more complicated than Bordeaux, the Rhone, Cahors, Champagne...you get the picture. Not to worry, they had two things going for me. An extensive list at all price points and a great somm to help. I told him what we were having, a price point and that we wanted something with some age. Voila, he suggested a 2009 Volnay premier cru from a small producer that I had never heard of, and probably is not available outside of France due to a limited production. At 145 euros a relative bargain. It was a perfect match and drank very well throughout the evening as it developed in the glass. My first inclination was to have it decanted, but again our somm recommended not to, and just let it develop in bottle and he was right. As I have said in many past reviews, a great somm brings so much to the dining experience! After a lovely chocolat desert we were done, but our driver was running late due to the still horrendous traffic. He called a few times to let the restaurant know he was running late and when to expect him and again, the restaurant was very helpful and accommodating. A perfect experience, off the beaten track, no Americans, lovely non-hovering classic French service. We have now been in Paris ten days and this was easily the best meal of the trip thus far. We will be back.
