On the surface of Alvarez BJJ, there are many team trophies, and even more medals from both him and…read morehis daughter on the walls. The facility is nice, you will feel like signing the contract immediately. However, It is overpriced and the school is overrated. After experiencing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in several different places over the world, the coaching isn't worth the price. The social environment is better for kids and teens looking for a supervised activity but does not possess the candor for adults. I've known this school for several years, when the location was in the warehouse across the lot from the facility where it is currently. The quality of attention has declined. Coach Alvarez's daughter, Danielle Alvarez worked with these kids for several years, however some of the parents I speak with express how their child's skill in jiu jitsu isn't growing. I've learned that she is very manipulative with the teenagers, showing favoritism with certain teamates and outcasting other individuals. She deceptively encourages the favorited young and impressionable teammates to be overly aggressive when rolling and sparring with the outcasts. I have noticed that she, along with Coach Danny, is a crucial factor to why the school is cliqueish and has a pack mentality. This is something I noticed more of as she is given more responsibility and freedom as a coach from her father and also as the children she's coached for years are growing up being groomed under her control. They look up to her because she is a world champion in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and they do not yet have the critical ability of discernment to recognize that this is manipulation and bullying. Instead being investigated and corrected by the head coach, this behavior is downplayed and defended by Coach Danny Alvarez. Coach Danielle Alvarez communicates great in the kids class but is very socially awkward with adults, and is arrogant towards other female teamates that she alienates. The frequent absence of coaching and aloofness from Coach Danny Alvarez has adverse affects on the classroom dynamics. His handling of conflicts are vaguely directed at the class in a shrewd lecture which demonizes any specific unnamed individual without speaking with them directly. This gives the effect of indirect shaming because of the presence the audience, the team. They offer different packages labeled under Bronze, Silver, and Gold. The Bronze package is still very expensive and has numerous limitations. For example, you can only train a number of times a week and you are not welcome to the open mat on Sundays with the Gold members, and you don't have access to certain areas of the facility that are offered to Gold members. Many of his students are loyal due to the fear of judgment and do not realize that they can have more genuine Jiu Jitsu experiences for far less money in the same city with great attentive coaches that are able to connect with their students. Although many students train hard to earn their belts and stripes, Coach Danny Alvarez will purposely choose a time when he is at odds with a student to spontaneously award belt promotions, choosing to skip the students he disagrees with to show his disapproval. He pressures his students to compete in tournaments for the team trophy but is not invested in the individual as a competitor. He is sure to record the promoted student's testimony to keep up appearances of the school. This school has had great talent, but many of the most competitive students are leaving because of the pressure and social environment. There is a distinct lack of connection from both Coach Danny Alvarez and Coach Danielle Alvarez and this has gotten worse with time. This is my personal experience with this school but I'm very sure so many other's share it. It's a nice clean simple family place on the surface with a seemingly caring staff, but is a corrupt cult once you've signed the contract.

I also travel a lot for work, which means I sometimes go weeks without showing up. Unlike other gyms, the trainers never make me feel bad about missing. Instead they make me feel welcome and encourage me to work as hard as I can to make up for my missed sessions. This is the second FBBC I have been a member of, and I definitely prefer the culture of this one. The trainers and the other members are all great and make me excited to show up!

Check in was smooth, but booking as a first timer felt like a bit of a choose your own adventure situation. I saw an $8 option, a $15 option, and then a very confident "first class free" sign when I arrived. I ended up calling and honestly, problem solved. The staff was super friendly, patient, and got everything sorted without any stress. I took the heated Hardsculpt class and wow... immediately humbled. It is HOT , the kind where you are sweating within minutes and quietly questioning your life choices. There is a good amount of choreography which kept me on my toes, but it was a solid sweat and still felt doable with modifications. The instructor was fantastic. Clear cues, great energy, actually present before and after class, and the music made you want to keep going even when your body was negotiating otherwise. They are generous with amenities too. Showers, a wild number of lockers, all first timer equipment was ready to go for me in a locker ( loveeee) so I can just show up and not think, and I have never in my life seen mat sanitizer machines hanging in a yoga lobby but now I am wondering why every studio does not have them! What really stood out was the community. It felt welcoming, organized, and like people genuinely wanted to be there. A good mix of ages and experience levels which I always appreciate. I personally lean toward darker, moodier studios with mirrors, so the bright open space and no mirrors took a second to adjust to, but that is just preference, not a flaw. Only thing to note, they are not on ClassPass App,which might be a miss for travelers trying to drop in. Overall, beautiful studio, strong workout, great people, and you will absolutely sweat. I learned a lot more then that I learned self discipline, respect, and how to be independent. Not only were they my instructors they became more than just friends. They became family to us. Still to this day when I walk into the dojo I feel like I'm walking into my own home always getting that warm greeting welcome. This is by far my one and only karate school I will ever go too. I'm getting my kids ready to go to their school in the near future so they can have the exact knowledge and connection I have with the pipers and their school. I went here a few weeks ago for a belt test for my friend. I've always found martial arts very…read moreinteresting and I've even lived in Japan for part of my life. This Kenpo school seemed very intense vs some of the other martial arts that I've witnessed and been involved with, I worked for a Muay Thai instructor for about two years. Any way. While I know there are differences in the schools of thought and the level of discipline that is needed in each practice I always knew there to be one thing in common. Respect. Respect for the 'class room, the art, the student, the teacher, just through and through everything was based on respect. I found it very concerning that this school didn't seem to follow that. They spoke of money openly and about their policies on their tests. Not unusual but they did it in a joking manner that I've know to only be associated with people who were clearly taking advantage of the individuals they were taking money from. This was after the conclusion of the belt test itself. As for the instructor himself, and I do apologize for the fact that I cannot remember his name just that he was the owner/founder/head instructor. Well I know belt tests can be rough, but there was a harshness that seemed to be contained by the man, like if there wasn't an audience and wasn't a live video going he would have been acting differently. That he was in himself restrained in what was his natural state. I hadn't intended to write any reviews but after over hearing a conversation between a mother and son tonight I felt a warning needed to be put out there. To protect the individuals involved I will not be using their names. However, while eating out tonight I couldn't help but over hear this family talking. When I inquired further I discovered that tonight it appears that the instructor called one of his students out to the front of the class. From what I gathered this isn't unusual. But he then proceeded to curse out, berate, and threaten to have his 'black belts come in and beat this students ass' and then kick out seemingly ban this student over what appeared to be a comment they made on social media that the instructor didn't agree with. I called my friend who attends this school and he admitted that he isn't surprised that this happened. While I can appreciate the idea that one is responsible for what One posts on a social media site -such as Yelp, Twitter, or Facebook- there is no reason for someone in a leadership, instructor role to do that. Publicly shaming someone who had put their trust in that person's leadership. From what I gather this follows more of the unprofessional and what now seems to be abusive behavior and I will not be allowing my children to attend this school.
