I am always a bit skeptical about expensive indian cuisine - however I really did enjoy the food here! The sauces were amazing and a good amount of vegetarian options. For two it was close to $150 so it is pricy. I don't know if I would go back but it was great to try once. Lots of ceiling on two floors and very beautiful interior. The service is great as well.

For me, the restaurant week menu was really disappointing. At $90 (the priciest option of all), I was expecting so much more. The crab vada (not pictured) was literally the size of a half dollar coin. It was basically a tiny crab cake. I thought the poori were tasty, but someone in my party said it tasted like "drinking salsa" and I have to agree. It was nice there were a few bonus courses (benne dosa and a green mango thogayial). I liked the maddur vada the most, but the dish overall was too salty. I was excited for asparagus benne dosa to highlight the spring produce, but it was very bland. The tomato sauce rescued the dish, but the other sauces were not my favorite. Finally, the black cod pollichatu was very tender. But, it had literally maybe two bites of protein total. The sauce was also extremely spicy, so some people in my group couldn't even stomach it. The sauce was flecked with whole spices that were unpleasant to bite into (green cardamon and cloves). The jigarthanda had an off putting smokey flavor, which I think was from the nannari (the waitress said it was like root beer). To be fair, it may be the case that I just don't really enjoy this genre of cuisine. The textures of each dish and flavors were not enjoyable for me. The ambience would make for a good date night or special occasion dinner. The service was very friendly and fast, but I personally won't be back.

Fine dining Indian food in San Francisco right across the street from AMC/ Japantown. High ceilings with beautiful earthy decor. We came in on a Friday around 8:30 pm and was able to snag a table for two immediately. It was packed more lively than intimate. The food had the pops of spice and flavor that you would expect in Indian cuisine. Each dish was beautifully presented. It is on the higher end of price but I've seen higher in the city. Staff was friendly and welcoming. Not pretentious. Parking can be tricky. I was able to find street parking a couple streets down. There is a parking garage but it was full by the time we got there.

    Cabbage dish.

Food was really good. Ambiance is so upscale and beautiful. Service was impeccable. Desserts were so good it was gone in 5 min. Fried chicken dish was my favorite and my husband loved their vegetarian cabbage dish.

Hello. Are you craving Indian food and want to try something new? Come with me to experience Copra in San Francisco. The first thing to order is the family style. This will give you an introduction to a variety of many Indian home cooked meals. First two dishes are the Gunpowder Goli Vada and Rasam Poori. I find that these dishes had so much spice and flavor. Next up, we have The Thattukada Fried Chicken. It was very crispy and savory. After that, we had the Dindigul Style Chicken Biryani, the Kerala Shrimp Marigo Curry, and the Beef Ularthiyathu. Every dish in this family style option was delicious and memorable. At the end of the course, we tried Cardamom Pave dessert. It was very sweet. We also tried a few drinks, such as the Honey Dove, Jaggery Sour, Emrich-Schonleber Monzinger 21 Riesling, and Watalappan. Overall, I recommend you come here with your special someone for a birthday celebration or an anniversary. Tina's Tip: Here is my tip. Make sure you reserve ahead of time as it can get very busy. Also, I would recommend doing the family style, so you can try more dishes. It's worth it.

CLEARED HOUSE...... everything was soooooo good. My favs were the rassam poori, fried crispy squids, the dosa and the blck cod. Mango Lassi cocktail, spectacular. Gods own country dessert is the most refreshing and unique thing ive had in a while. My fork was on the table and my hands were on the plate. Truly ate. But i didnt feel gross the next day??? Yummmmmm

3.5 stars. We came for Restaurant Week and tried the $90 prix fixe menu. The restaurant interior is very different but nice. Staff was OK but our food was slow to come out of the kitchen. We saw a couple of tables where diners arrived after us and received their food way before us. The waitress at one point came over a couple of times to see if our dishes had arrived. We thought the portions were small for the price point. Most of the dishes had nice flavor but BFF had asked no spicy foods and several of the dishes were clearly spicy. My fav was the dosa and the tiny chocolate ice cream dessert was tasty. We liked the fried chicken which consisted of small pieces of chicken chunks but a nice crunchy crust. Drinks were good but my cocktail with turmeric took getting used to. It's a very popular place so reservations highly recommended.

One of my favorite restaurants in SF. Consistently delicious, great service & ambiance, and I often bring out-of-towners here, as it's not too difficult to get a last-minute reservation. Must order dishes: - Perigord Black Truffle Soft Egg Appam - Black Cod Pollichathu - Rasam Poori - Vegetable of the day (3 dishes) - great flavors, love the variety paired with the other dishes

Finally got to tick off Copra on my list! We ordered alacarte for 4 people and got 8 things (4 small plates, 3 entrees, 1 dessert). My favorites were the Masala Dosa, Rassam Puri, and Chutney Palette. Loved how many sauces and sides there were for different dishes! Everything is very flavorful and does not hold back on spice. My passes would be the Black Cod Pollichathu, Beef Ularthiyathu (roti was dense/dry). Definitely a beautiful restaurant with tall ceilings and very immersive decor. On the pricier side, so would recommend more-so for a nicer occasion!

Indian food? Yes, please. This place is absolutely wonderful, so much so that its décor literally made me feel like getting married there. I love spaces with high ceilings where you can truly appreciate the scale and openness of the area, and this place delivers exactly that. The décor is beautiful, filled with lush plants that add freshness and elegance throughout the space. What really caught my attention was the service, which is excellent. Servers, bartenders, bussers, and food runners all work seamlessly together, everything is perfectly organized and flows effortlessly. It's an ideal spot to visit with friends and enjoy an amazing time. And the highlight for me: dessert. I tried two different ones.. I don't remember their names, but they were both absolutely delicious. A perfect ending to a truly lovely experience.

Copra has a chic lively, low lighting ambiance that's good for a small group to share dishes. It took us a bit to be seated despite having a reservation, and took a while until someone came to take our order but once we placed the order the food came very quickly. We got several dishes and the stand out one for us was the mackerel that came in a rich sauce. The side dishes were also delicious. The stewed beef is definitely a skippable item, it was quite dry and our group didn't love it. Overall we enjoyed the dishes and it's definitely a good time to come here and try several family style, but I don't feel like I'm in a rush to come back here.

As a so-cal er, I'm envious of the fine dine indian establishments popping up in the bay and have had this on my wishlist for so long. Went in on a weekend. Even with a reservation the wait lines had started to form before they opened at 5. It's clearly popular. Parking is a hassle like all of SF. Interiors are Tulum inspired, probably a nod to indian costal cuisine?! The mains are pretty sizeable and expensive so we decided to split multiple apps and perhaps a main between the 2. We had the koshmbiri wrap, chicken fry, prawn appetizer, masala dosa and some dessert. Everything was strictly ok, except the drinks which were bad. Everything felt muted and not punchy or impactful. While it's better than socal indian places by miles, it still isn't there yet. Also service lacks speed, detail, and care.

couldn't see a name on the outside of the restaurant, so it was mysterious, in a good way! The atmosphere is amazing with lots of great decor. One thing to note, if you want a quieter atmosphere, ask for a table upstairs. We started with the Orange Ruby (non alcoholic) and Yatri cocktails. Excellent taste on both. The server recommended for the two of us selecting two dishes, each from the small medium and large sections of the menu. - Swiss Chard Vada - nice spice kick, good texture - Gunpowder Goli Vadai - I was afraid this might be too spicy, but it was perfect. Great texture. Great coconut chutney accompanies this. - Hot Butter Squids - great, not chewy. A little spicy. - Thattkudada Fried Chicken - really yummy. Boneless. Loved the masala crumbs. - Southern Kerala, shrimp mango curry- really yummy. Liked the egg appam accompaniment. Lots of sauce, would've been great with rice to soak it up with. - Lamb Shoulder Chettinad - so tender! Boneless. Served with kal-dosai. Also lots of sauce, would've been so good to have some rice with this as well. For dessert, we split a watalappan. Super tasty, like a flan. Butterscotch cream with it was really good too. Excellent food, service and atmosphere. I think that coming when the restaurant opens for the evening probably helped to guarantee good food and service. Perhaps some of the other reviews that said otherwise were for diners who came when it was busier. It is a pretty expensive dinner, but I can definitely see why the price is so - there's a lot of care and creativity put into the dishes.

    Ask the Community - Copra

How much does an average dinner cost? Appetizer, main, dessert.

    $150+

Asking for a friend...does Copra do take-out or is it only dine-in?

Definitely done-in. I think takeout is also available. However we dined in.

Could a person dine alone here? Or are the dishes all family style?

You can dine alone, for sure. Some of the plates are bigger than others, but all the food is reasonable size.

For the dinner menu, is it a 3 course meal and you choose one item from each section? Does each item…

No, the menu is a la carte

Looking for a Safe parking place around?

Across the street at the Japan Centre parking garage

What kind of Jain options do they have (no onion, no garlic, no potatoes)?

    Not much

Is this restaurant kid / toddler friendly?

Hello, there wasn't a children's menu available, but I took both my kids (ages 7 and 2) and they had a wonderful time. The staff were welcoming and attentive to the kids. The restaurant is roomy and the noise level is loud so that helps.

    Do they have vegan items?

yes - you need to ask when ordering

    Do they serve halal?

Yes we do. Everything is certified Halal with the exception of the Bone Marrow & Rabbit dish. Please ask your server upon arrival as menu items do change and this information is current as of 9.20.23.

Starting off with what was good though, their mango lassi is tasty and momo chili dumplings are so flavorful with great texture. I would say they excel at their doughs in general because their naan was also great (especially the onion stuffed naan). Their Sewa/kale chaat was also passable (but would love if the kale pieces were bigger so that beans don't cause it to be as soggy after a while). That being said, it seems like they could do a little better with packing a flavor punch for their other dishes. Their shrimp tandoori was good but nothing to write home about. Lamb biriyani was also good but could've been stronger in flavor. Chicken tikka masala seemed like it was lacking something (but not sure what...), and the artichoke pakora didn't taste like artichoke? Thought it was still decent... I also think their tamarind chutney could be a bit thicker in consistency (maybe like that of the mango lassi), the mint chutney was nice.

For a restaurant in San Francisco, especially one representing Indian hospitality, I really expect a more organized and respectful front-of-house experience. Clear signage, a proper check-in system, and basic courtesy from hosts would go a long way.
