I stopped in here after lunch today and was really surprised to see how big it was inside. They had a really great selection of books (that were organized well), but I was especially surprised by their cookbook selection. Their prices were great too, slightly more (maybe $1) than the big online shop, but I'm happy to support local especially with that little of a price difference. I was able to find a book I had never heard of here but right up my alley! The person who helped me check out was really friendly. read more

This is an absolutely adorable little book shop in the heart of downtown Calistoga. You could definitely find any of the books you're looking for, they're in excellently labeled sections throughout the store! They're also lots of fun little gift items to explore! Is a cute little sitting area where someone was sitting on enjoying their book, however, also make a great little spot to read to kids. The super cute thing about this shop is they have a gift wrapping section where if you buy a gift for somebody, there's a little table with lots of different, wrapping paper, tape, and bows that you can then wrap your gifts! We were there during the December holiday time, so I'm not sure if that is always there or just the holiday season. Super cute shop! read more

Copperfid's is a true local book store with an amazing selection of books and extras; like journals, notepads, etc... The staff was helpful and attentive. It's nice to find book stores that also encourage, support and host local authors. I visited this store 2 days in a row and both visits. Exceeded my expectations. I always make a point to stop at a local bookstore when we are traveling. (I have since learned there are several other Copperfield's in the Sonoma/Napa area.) Copperfield's had a good selection of books as well as cards and other gift items. The store is quite spacious, but I felt they could have had more merchandise or made better use of the space. Copperfield's Calistoga is the northernmost outpost of books in the Napa Valley. It's great for impulse purchases, perusing the magazines, checking out the sale section, and listening to the relaxing music. There are couches and chairs to snuggle up on a rainy day. There isn't as much a selection of magazines as the Napa store, but it's good for Calistoga. Their religion/spirituality/philosophy section could use some expansion, and the community billboard shows the quirkiness of UpValley life. read more

The store has a great bookstore vibe likely due to its attentive staff, thoughtful book displays, and a comfortable atmosphere that encourages you to browse and browse and browse some more. Copperfield's may not have every book you're looking for and you may wind up paying full price for your book, but it definitely fills a gap in Napa Valley retail. If you've come to the Valley to relax and misplaced or finished your trashy novel- have no fears. Copperfield's to the rescue! (There's other locations throughout the Valley if Calistoga is out of your way) Copperfield's also has a good selection of magazines, nic nacks, and Napa Valley-related literature. If you've had lunch at Mustards, Terra, or Tra Vigne and want to create the magic at home, Copperfield's has an extensive cookbook selection to help you. I remember back in the day when before Amazon, there used to be those bookstores, where we'd go and browse, with a cafe adjoining ... remember those? This jaunt here reminded me of yesteryear--clean and well laid out, though I wish they had more seating, maybe during the time of COVID, they removed seating they may have had? Not sure. But it has a friendly vibe, where the few people working there seemed to be up to help. It also is lit beautifully, when we went at almost dusk, it felt sort of fairy tale like, with Christmas lights elsewhere on the street, almost as if out of a Dickens novel. Sweet little place, and despite that I usually load things on my kindle, I found something that I couldn't resist ... or maybe it's that I felt vaguely guilty for walking out of the shop without buying something, so I got a bookmark, which is itself hysterical since I'm one of those disrespectful people who folds and turns and otherwise mutilates pages. But this was a gorgeous butterfly bookmark which did not break the bank :-) read more

When I am visiting a town I always check out the coffee shop and the book store. When I entered, I was greeted. That's always so nice. I enjoyed the two tables in the front of new fiction and non-fiction. I picked up a book from each. In the middle of the store, they have clearanced books. That's always a good thing. The every day stock is mostly on the sides in shelving. Very small pickings from each category. One of the things they could do that would make it more like an independent store would be to have staff recommendations on cards throughout the store. This is one of my favorite things in smaller stores, but their staff recommendations are up at the cash registers. So I didn't see it until I was already checking out. That isn't smart merchandising. The cash registers are for convenience items...must haves. I'd love to see recommendations throughout the store so I can make my book decisions before checking out. read more

This place was an unexpected pleasant surprise. I happened to find a board game I've been wanting for a long time for $10 less than I could find anywhere else (Ebay and Amazon) so that made my day. My other half found a photography book he was interested in for also $10 less than on Amazon. We did, however, pick from the clearance and sale sections. The sticker price for the game was higher than the list price should have been (perhaps why they still had it in stock). It was fun to browse around and kill some time before heading out for some wine tasting. read more

Visiting Calistoga, CA this 4th of July weekend, had a great dinner at Evangeline (YUM!) & went for a stroll on Lincoln Street, walked into Copperfields Bookstore (doors wide open), picked up 3 items (within 10 minutes) about $30 worth & the young girl came up to me (maybe 8:05 PM) & informed me "Doors are locked"! Nothing about checking me out, NOTHING!!! I actually left setting my items in hand at the checkout counter, no purchase, as I was so caught so off guard by her remark & no offer to "may I please check you out now"? I am doing my best to support the local bookstores left in the world, & it's frustrating to see some of our younger employees NOT care enough to put customer first. read more

I really liked this Copperfield's and found a couple of Christmas presents there. It shares the space with a kitchen store which makes it interesting. I would have looked a lot longer at books and magazines if I hadn't recently been to the new Copperfield's in San Rafael which is much bigger. read more

There is something about this place that makes you want to stay awhile and pay full price. There is a great kids section and comfortable chairs and a very entertaining nic nac/pop culture assortment. read more

This is an amazing store to visit! There's so much to look at and not just books. They had really fun games and puzzles, cards, bags, and more fun gifts. The staff was helpful. They had a great table with book resources and events. I loved their creative displays. They even had some Harry Potter games and collectables I had not seen before. They had a lot of sale books too. Great bookstore. However, the music that is being played is not conducive to browsing a bookstore. Please play classical or 40s-50s Americana (Sinatra, Nat Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, etc.). Country rock is fine when I go to bars, but not bookstores. read more

We've visited the store a handful of times over the years and I regret not writing positive reviews of those visits. We recall a cozy, inviting, well organized shop with comfortable seating and a friendly, helpful and knowledgeable owner, but it appears that times have changed. It's nice to see that they're still in business, but the familiar faces are gone (along with the comfortable chairs), and overall things seemed a bit messier and less browser friendly than we remembered. It appears that the adjacent business was either gone or undergoing major changes, as were a number of other small shops around town, so I fear the local economy has not recovered as well as other nearby areas. I did note that we were the only people in the shop for our entire stay. It's sad to see the warmth and positive energy that brought us back here seems to have gone. read more

Stopped in here to browse for a couple gifts and a treat for myself. They didn't have the item I wanted in stock at this location but the very friendly and helpful staff had the item sent to my local store the next day. So nice to be able to browse and buy at a store in the evening and off line. read more

Undaunted, we ventured back into this bookstore on a return trip, and it was a whole different experience. We were promptly greeted, offered assistance, and had a nice chat with a lovely young women who rang up our purchase;. Later, we discovered that our friend Sheryl Cotleiur is now one of the booik buyers there. We have appreciated Sheryl's expertise in Clean Well-Lighted Place for Books in San Francisco, and then Book Passage in San Francisco and Corte Madera. What a lovely surprise to know that she's now with Copperfield's in Calistoga. Good for them, and lucky for us. read more

This is a usual stop on our bike rides through town, and is usually a nice stop. Today we had a different experience. My 3 year old and I always stop at the back corner table in the childrens book section, and he gets to choose a new book to bring home. He picked one and we went to check out. The book he picked rang up as $8.99, but the sticker price was $4.99 (as were all the other books of the same title). The cashier asked the manager and she made a comment that people change the stickers to pay a lower price upon checkout (indirectly directed at me). She asked me where I picked the book from and I directed her. She then walks back to the checkout after taking a look and prompts the cashier to change the price to $4.99 in the computer; without saying she was sorry, or anything at all for that matter, to me. I don't mind the price at all. I definitely do mind being treated like that though. read more

Although the building is small, the store is laid out in small intimate sections that make you feel at home. I can spend hours here exploring the books, games and trinkets that they carry. read more

Copperfields book store in Calistoga is a nice enough book store, but I have a major problem with them. Most book stores have a display of the New York Times best sellers either out in the window or in a prominent place inside of the store. Apparently Copperfields only displays best sellers by liberal authors, but never conservative authors. When Killing Lincoln, Killing Kennedy, or Killing Jesus were on the number one best sellers list, these books were no where to be found in the store. You had to ask for them. When I did this the clerk went in the back to get the book. Now that the best seller is America, Imagine a World Without Her, once again this book IS NOT on display. Therefore I buy my books elsewhere. BTW didn't Costco just get thousands of complaints for doing this. They in turn put the best sellers back out due to these complaints. read more
