Stumbled upon this absolutely INCREDIBLE bookstore. As a book collector, I've been to TONS of bookstores and I've never seen a rare book section like this. It's incredibly well curated, taken care of and there were books that are impossible to find ANYWHERE tucked in the stacks. This place has a TON of books. Come here with a fully paid meter because you will lose track of time. The staff is always really helpful and do their best to point you in the direction of what you may be looking for. Although this place has the books in alphabetical order of authors lastname, the dont have a system in place to search currently inhouse books, which kindof makes it fun. I first went to this bookstore in 1991. Before the internet, they helped me look for used books that they didn't have in stock. Years later, I still like to come here when I'm in town. You should allow at least a half hour to an hour to loom around at the variety of books they have to offer! They have every genre you can think of. I just left a used bookstore in Novato where used books ran .50 - $3.00 a book. I was in absolute STICKER SHOCK walking into Treehorn. JIMMENIES! $9-$20 (or more) for used book was just madness. Let first say, the staff was very helpful, energized and willing to help. I really liked them. The store is jam packed.  Claustrophobic like. Plenty of inventory to choose from. You can easily get lost in there for hours. But don't forget to feed that hungry parking meter because you're in downtown Santa Rosa. I walked out with 1 children's book for a whopping $7 + tax. There was absolutely no way I was spending $15-$20 on a cookbook where I literally just got 5 used cookbooks for $13 in Novato at the other used book store @ $2-$3/ea with no sales tax. The recent reviewer that compared Treehorn to the bookstore in Novato does not know the difference between a charity shop versus an actual business. The Novato store is meant to be a "friends of the library" bookshop and they take in books that are donated. Treehorn is a BUSINESS and that means that they have to turn a profit. Even if the books are used. Treehorn provides decent quality books and their prices are still cheaper than what one would pay for an item online. Not to mention---what you save on postage for shipping. Treehorn is for real book buyers. They have a considerable selection and their staff is genuinely helpful. read more

I spent 45 minutes here recently, and I could have spent that much time just in the little front section with the leather bound and antique books! Blondie and I ended up buying a 1950s hardback Haggadah with beautiful illustrations. The number of sections is formidable; even a little niche for Gorey-ana. I was just as fascinated with stuff other than books, including interesting pics near the ceiling - don't forget to look up! Plenty of vinyl to look through if that's your thing. I'm visiting from NC and on my list of things to do was to find a cool independent bookstore. Treehorn was a disappointment. It did lead me to Santa Rosa's downtown which I did spend some time walking around but I really wanted a good book. Treehorn is more of the owner's personal time capsule of books. They sell really old vintage books. Books like song books, history books, etc. I did spot a couple of Colleen Hoover books but noting more note-able than that (and I really like Colleen Hoover but that should say a lot). Fortunately, Barnes and Noble is literally right up the block (I just really enjoy supporting small independent bookstores but Treehorn wasn't the one for that). Also something that unsettles me is not being greeted when I walk into a store. I was seen but no greeting. read more

Nice people lots of books weird vibe (watched me shop yet didn't acknowledge me) but helpful when asked questions by customers and happy to assist questions also used to be blown away by low prices but now I've noticed many items are actually closer to the original prices unless it's incredibly aged but I love stopping by and always check for what I'm looking for here first. We always shop independent bookstores whenever we travel. And this is a good one! The staff is very friendly, and welcomed out dog. The selection is excellent! My tween daughter had a couple of titles in mind, and I did too. I was not sure we'd be able to find all the books used because even the best used books tapers don't always have what we want in stock. But we found all of the books we were looking for here at reasonable prices. We could have spent a whole day here just browsing as the selection is great. read more

What a gem of a bookstore. This cute little used bookstore is definitely worth the visit for anyone who wants to pick up a book at a great price. They have a great selection and a wide variety of topics. They have books here in great quality for almost unbeatable prices. I have gotten many books from here from a wide variety of topics and always seem to find books for far cheaper than if I had bought one online. Everytime I leave Treehorn I feel absolutely satisfied at some rare title I purchased for way less than I expected. Definitely ask for help if you need it. The employees are kind and helpful but maybe not the most extroverted employees, so you'll need to get someone's attention if you need help. Don't stand around waiting for someone to notice you needing help and offer it to you, rather go to the counter and ask for help finding something. I used to adore this place. I've been going for almost 10 years. I've always loved the staff, the ambiance, and the ability to sell used books back and get in store credit. It's been a minute since I've been back, but I was appalled to see the kind of person being employed here. Some older lady with glasses behind the desk, dark brown hair, was talking to another woman about politics. Every time she got a call in the store she would immediately get upset and irritated, say how she has a lot of customers and it's only her running the store (yet no one was waiting for her to ring them up or anything.. so I didn't see why she couldn't just take the time to answer a question. After all, you're working at a book store. You sell books. People will ask if you have certain books). I was perusing a shelf myself but kept cringing at the way she would yell at customers over the phone. I also feared asking her about a particular author I was looking for due to the way she was treating customers. I dont like leaving bad reviews on Yelp. I work in the service industry myself, but these past few experiences I've had have been so uncomfortable, I thought I'd put it out there in case anyone else had encountered her too. read more

What a fantastic book store - I was in the other day and babbled to the poor clerk about how it reminded me of my dear departed Skyline Books in their old location on 18th street in New York. I knew I was in trouble when I perused their first shelf and contemplated buying an old guide to PA that I DID NOT need but was so charming I seriously considered it. I picked up quite a few titles I've never seen before or were on my list and I really really appreciate their considered selection. Will be a regular stop for me. Am I ever glad that Treehorn exists! Don't get me wrong, I love Copperfields, and if you have to have a corporate bookstore, you could do worse than Barnes & Noble down the road. But Treehorn is the sort of place you can get lost in, metaphorically and literally (well, probably not literally, if you really use your senses, you could feel your way out to 4th street if the need ever arose). Shelves stuffed to the nines with volumes you can't find anywhere else, often two or three deep. That's DEEP, not horizontal or vertical. I guess my only advice would be to not try to find anything in particular. But that's what a place like this is for - don't come in with preconceived notations, just pick an aisle, count off a random number of books, and study what you have. I guarantee that you'll be interested, better yet infatuated. read more

Treehorn is a jewel of a bookstore. My friend and I came to Santa Rosa for a day. A walk on 4th Street after lunch led us to the door of Treehorn. No sooner have I walked in did I realize I was in book heaven. Immediate to the right of the door is a section of new books at a discount. Some of the newest fiction titles are 25% off. The fiction section occupies the entire left wall, with shelves going from floor to ceiling. Two rows of books occupy each shelf so you have to take some time browsing and removing the front row to see the other books. Treehorn carries used books in fairly good to excellent conditions. They also have a truck full of first editions and hardbounds in library dust jackets. I spent about 30minutes browsing the fiction section (under time constraint to return to San Francisco) and found 5 trade paperbacks. Stegner, Yates, Maugham... You will find more than what you bargain for if you allow plenty of time to browse this shop. It seems to me that they are short of space to store books so some of the sections might be slightly disorganized. Shelves can be filled to the brim. That said, Treehorn is still one of the best local indie with great selection and friendly customer service. read more

This is a book lover's bookstore. Ladders on wheels to reach high shelves. Beautiful old hardcovers. Piles of horizontal books cover rows of vertical books. Behind those are slipped some books flat against the shelf.a little disorganized like at home, but so much more. I grew up in San Francisco, my childhood and teen years occurring in the 70s and 80s and my early adult years in the late 80s and 90s. These were decades of many used bookstores throughout the Bay Area, some of which were lively and well-stocked and others feeling more like thrift stores than second-chance centers for unusual book discoveries. For decades, at the top of the food chain for used bookstores sat Moe's in Berkeley and Green Apple in San Francisco, both offering a wide and eclectic selection of books in a variety of genres. And fortunately, with the presence of the bookstore having been significantly reduced by the rise of Internet-based commerce in the 21st century, those two fantastic bookstores still remain. Still, the pleasure of wandering into funky bookstores in nearly every neighborhood in the Bay Area has dwindled. I especially miss Wessex Books in Menlo Park. Somehow, however, I had never known about Treehorn Books in Santa Rosa. After hearing about it recently, I made the journey up 101. When I first walked in, my eyes lit up. There were books everywhere. For some, this might be a blessing AND a curse because it can be quite dizzying to wade through the many stacks. Many of the shelves are two rows deep. I loved this fact because, for me, the pleasure of a used bookstore is found in the possibility of discovery. I have been seriously collecting poetry, art and photography books, nature writing, literature and books about Zen and other subjects for nearly twenty-five years. With each passing year, I know more and more so I am less surprised by something new. At the same time, there are books that I am aware of that I patiently wait for a well-priced copy. Treehorn, like Green Apple and Moe's, offers many opportunities for both of these discoveries. I happily spent a few hours wandering through the stacks. At the front of the store, they offer stacks of first editions, many of which are signed, two rows deep. Throughout the store, every major genre / subject matter is offered and filled to the brim with possibilities. They offer a nice remainder book section as well. The books are very fairly-priced I have added Treehorn to my frequent-visit list of stores-- especially since I now live Northern Marin. I've been shopping in this store forever, but I just made my last trip. With the ever-escalating prices, it's so not worth the trip. Add to that I always have to climb up and move a hundred books to see what's smashed in the back and available in the section (foreign language). AND I used to buy my grandkids books in there all the time, but now with the crazy prices, its a way better deal on eBay or amazon. Sad, really it is. Man, everytime that i've gone in here the staff was extremely rude. It seems like they'd rather go out of their way to be rude then to be nice. If they are reading a book behind the counter, don't expect to get wrung up, let alone any help finding something.Also, their books are very musky and smelly which you'll figure out right when walking through the door. We recently went here with our friends, J & D, and they loved it! J says he's retuning when h's saved up some money to buy several books he spotted. D found a copy of Tom Leher's music. It has a very well-organized selection of books, audiobooks and DVDs. There are also shelves and tables with new or recently new books at discounted prices. I try to limit myself to a few sections: Humor, Cookbooks, Childrens' and Audiobooks. Mr Rinky and I can not walk into this store without walking out with at least one item. They do buy books usually only M-F (call to verify), I brought in a bag of books but unfortunately they didn't buy any. We always go here whenever we're in Santa Rosa. read more

After a cup of real coffee at Peet's, or a cup of not-so-real coffee at Starbucks, or a vegan lunch at MAC'S across the street, or a power luncheon at the Rendez Vous Bistro further down on Fourth, you should shed your Yuppy-ness, become an old-fashioned human and smell some used books at Treehorn. They also have a few new ones, some more expensive rare books, and some coffee table books and misc. anthologies (those are on the table right where you enter); but the true treasures are the musty used books on those tall shelves. It's a paradise for browsing, especially when you're not looking for a particular author or title. I recently found pretty rare books about Thomas Mann, Walt Whitman, Nabokov. Sometimes you can get lucky in the philosophy section, even in mathematics. Better even cookbooks and children's books, military history, or odd-ball mystical and religious stuff. Unfortunately, this bookstore too will eventually go the way of the dodo bird, unless the owner gets his act together, organizes what he has, and enters the online market big time. There is so much going on in here that it's hard to figure out where to begin. The books are piled haphazardly all around the store, but this only adds to the appeal of the tiny space. I love the feeling of being surrounded by books. Designated by type (fiction, non-fiction, biography, history, etc.), the books here stretch floor-to-ceiling on shelf after shelf of hidden treasures. The owner is also very friendly, offering help to those with an overwhelmed look on their faces as they try to locate a specific title. I didn't end up leaving with anything, but Boyfriend purchased a dog-eared copy of The Tropic of Cancer, which he's always meant to read, for a couple of bucks. As this place is down the street from Russian River Brewing Company, it'll be a nice change of pace to run and spend some time here instead of Barnes and Noble while we're waiting for a seat! read more

Treehorn is so clearly the best place to get books in SR that I won't even mention the others. Treehorn had always been there for me when I need a little something to read... They're clean and generally well-organized. Their prices are great... I was just in Santa Cruz and went to a similar used book store and the prices were at least $2 for any given book. This place brings value to 4th St. and gives me a reason to stay away from TV. Another great thing about Treehorn is their hours. They are open much later than most places on 4th St. meaning that I can go browse for a while when I'm stuck downtown. Good staff also... they're always helpful and are happy to recommend other places (online usually) if they can't deliver. This is truly a community store. It's been a while since I've been in here, mostly cause I have a hard time with the jumble of the books, it sorta makes me antzy to see them every which way. I get some of the catorgorizing, but then other times, I'm a little baffled by it. Got a pretty cool book here today -brand new for $6. The strange old paper smell, kinda gets to me after a while too, but I will still spend tons of hours in here sifting through books, perhaps one day I'll turn over some crazy alchemy book that teaches me all the secrets of the universe, or maybe one day I'll finish the last 5 chapters in my novel, pop in, and find my own book sitting on a shelf, ready for someone to buy. Cool store, neat reads, just expect to spend quite a bit of time in here, there is no in and out - too hard to just pop in and figure out what you want. read more

I've been coming to this place for nearly 8 years. I make it a point to stop here every time I'm in Santa Rosa. It's a book store. Simple as that and it's brilliant. As soon as you walk in the smell of paper and leather hits you. God I love that smell! Books are stacked to the ceiling and the selection is massive. Plenty of first and second editions for sale. Prices are reasonable and staff encourages you to browse and search until your hearts content. Stop by if you get a chance. Books stores are rare these days, especially a non big box one. read more
