I don't have a whole lot to say about Copperfields, other than I really preferred this store to the Copperfields in Napa, and I've grown found of the trend of shelving the books with the front cover facing out. It's somehow more engaging for me, despite meaning that the number of books carried is less. I also note that the store places genre above other considerations, so that you can have fiction horror shelves with non-fiction sensationalist titles. Interesting idea. Great selection of books in a fantastic book store. I've been to other Copperfield's locations and they are all great. There's more than just books, with greeting cards and other small toys in the store. Friendly staff. They helped me find where home/DIY books were located which I had fun browsing while waiting for my wife to decide on what book to get for our road trip. Definitely an amazing gem of a bookstore. There are so many books and crannies to explore inside that you might just find yourself spending more time here than you planned. The layout of the bookstore is ordered and it's easy to navigate your way around. The different sections are marked clearly and the sections each have their own feel and vibe. The kids section in the back is super cool with lots of toys and interesting picture books to look through. What we liked most about this store was all of the accoutrements adorning the shelves. Custom note cards and stationary were next to literary shirts and look up to see the dragon kites hanging from the ceiling. With all of those items it didn't feel cluttered or too busy. It felt charming and exciting. I don't know when I'll ever be in Sebastopol again, but if I am then I know I will be back to enjoy this bookstore. read more

Knowing that an incredible book store exists is a wonderful find while wandering around Sebastopol. After picking up apples, we decided to stop in town to look around. Copperfield's is one of those places where you didn't intend to spend a long time or a bit of change but we did. I was mainly looking at children's books for my grandson and found entire sections very layed out and inviting to brouse. Just going through the children's section took awhile but it was well worth it. No doubt it is a lot of fun to wander through a bookstore but it is well worth the time. Hopefully I'll carve out a few hours to check on the other sections of this wonderful bookstore in the future. read more

Great bookstore with tons of books (duh), magazines, gifts etc. I found gotten good deals here for gifts. This is one of the first places I stop in Sebastopol while looking for gifts. They have adorable necklaces, cute planners and candles. Also tons of random little clips/bookmarks and all those things you don't really need but must buy anyways. The employees are super helpful for finding books and they wrap gifts here too. Only negative is they don't carry everything a bigger bookstore might. They do order for you but it just means you have to wait it out. read more

I have a big thing for bookstores. This bookstore is a diamond int he ruff. It has tables of books and shelves of books while still remaining modest and still very much a mom and pop. there is nothing commercial about this place and you can tell by the loads of funky little knick knacks to tea tumblers and coffee cups. Small area by the cashier to satisfy your craving for a kitschy bauble or two, or maybe a bookmark or light. Love the kids section in the back. Small toys and craft-like items here as well. Not too crowded and very children friendly. TIP: Check out the sale shelf in the front for some cheap, great finds. ;) read more

For selection and browsing, this place is pretty good, with lots of unusual and obscure books. It's not as big as I expected, maybe only 10,000 books. However -- just about every book is listed on the internet, and all prices reflect that market. So don't expect to find a good deal on anything here. Even the antique malls in the area are better for old book bargain hunting. read more

What can you say? Copperfield's is one of the last great small bookstores. Maybe not THAT small, but certainly not one of the huge chains -- and the staff know their books! Yes... they actually read them and can talk about them and make recommendations! Wow. Love this bookstore. They carry a good selection of magazines, greeting cards and other items too. If a bookstore is allowing children to shop there, they should also allow children to use the bathroom. I went with my 11 year old. He had a book in his hand to purchase, but had to go to the bathroom. They refused to allow him. I told them it was an emergency. They told me to go blocks away. We left the book, and purchased it for $9 less on Amazon. If you cannot allow children to use your bathroom, you should stick to curbside pickup! read more

Awhile back, they had a display highlighting Russian-themed books- appropriate, since http://www.fortross.org is about an hour away. They have huge selections of cookbooks and magazines. During the Gravenstein Festival, they have baskets of local apples. It's a bookstore that will definitely be an apple of your eye! read more

I want to praise the used book section of the Copperfield's Book Store in Sebastopol, a few doors down from the main store on Main Street. While it has fewer books than, for instance, Treehorn in Santa Rosa, it has a very pleasant atmosphere, a friendly, knowledgeable staff, an enough comfortable chairs to sit and browse in books you may want to buy because they are interesting - even if you don't necessarily need them. Prices are reasonable. Most books, at least in the fiction section, are paperbacks. But there's also a fine selection of books on philosophy, poetry, and literary criticism (essays). Several days a week (call for hours) you can "sell" your own books (if they have resell value) for store credit. read more

Copperfield's Music no longer exists (check out Incredible Records instead), but the used bookstore is fabulous. They have an excellent collection of rare books and first editions as well as the usual mishmash of old oddities and used copies of that book you just have to have. I nearly always find something, even if it's not what I thought I wanted. Prices are reasonable, but this isn't the place to find a cheap deal (although the dollar shelf out front can surprise you). It's a little hard, as a bibliophile, to give this place 2 stars. Especially since outside of The Book Passage in Marin and, to a lesser extent, Mockingbird Books in Seb and Guerneville, there aren't any really good bookstores. But having lived most of my life in Eugene, Portland, Olympia, Seattle...places with truly great bookstores... After about a decade I still don't begin to comprehend their system for sections nor why books are placed where they are (or why copies aren't placed in the several spots that would logically apply). I also don't understand why they don't provide a kiosk, nor the functionality on their website, to check IF a book is in stock, and if so, where it is located. I do appreciate their "Employee recommends" section though I wish it included a photo or some sort of symbol of their choosing to help us remember which employees tastes I like. And I do appreciate the "new fiction" and "new non-fiction" tables. But I find it too hard and unituitive of a bookstore to navigate, that is overstocked with trending books at the expense of a solid core. read more

My husband and I want to acknowledge MB of the Sebastopol Copperfield's. We were looking for a book that is difficult to get. In fact, Copperfield's couldn't get it for us, but it wasn't through lack of trying. MB went *more* than the extra mile in checking databases and distributors, and even talked to the manager to see if there was a way to get the book. Her telephone manner was polite, friendly and upbeat. We felt like MB wanted us to have the book nearly as much as we did. That is good service, even when the result isn't perfect. Love love love this place. I'm biased; this was one of the key bookstores of my childhood. But I still enjoy it when I come back to visit. -Displays are well-organized and spacious enough to allow for browsing comfortably -Even the sale books are easy to find, and not just super-lame books no one wants -Inventory: good variety and selection in nearly every category, including non-book items like journals, cards, calendars and gifts (stocking stuffers near the front; kids toys and activity books in the back) -Has That Book Smell - not sterile like the corporate behemoths that didn't survive online sales -Super knowledgeable and friendly to every reader: on my last visit I observed a staff member patiently notate a list of ~10 titles the customer (maybe a teacher?) had called to order multiple copies of. He looked up on the computer the ones he knew he didn't have in stock, and patiently explained that he wanted to put them on hold for a few minutes to go check how many copies of the others were in the store just to make sure. Another staff member helped a kid (probably middle school) who asked about a particular title in a book series-- it was on backorder, but she walked out to show her some books she might like instead. Whenever I'm back in Sebastopol, a stop at Copperfields is a must. read more
