we were so lucky we were staying nearby, my boyfriend and I beat our friends there so we stopped by to kill some time. My partners has recently gotten into whiskey and the frontman there Jesse was extremely helpful and friendly. I am not a distillery fan usually but tried a blackberry cocktail with gin and it was great. We forced our friends to come back and visit again before we had to leave. My boyfriend and I decided to stop in due to the walking distance from our hotel (2 minutes). When you walk in, it is absolutely breathtaking. It has such a comforting vibe to it. There are plenty of bar seats, couch seats, tables, and outdoor seating. I didn't catch their names, but the two gentlemen that helped us were very accommodating. I ordered the Whiky Sour and the Pirates Tiki (not pictured/highly recommended). If we were not in a rush, we would have ordered the charcuterie board; It looked lovely. What a great experience!!! Copper Fox Distillery has a very knowledgeable staff ready to share all the awesome details of their liquors and process distilling. VA ABC laws limit your tasting, but you get an awesome experience with a variety of liquors. There's a little something unique for everyone. I'm not usually a gin fan, however, their Vir Gin is a very different blend of flavors! The anise balances the floral and herbaceous flavors to something a little warmer than a typical gin. I was a big fan of their ryes and rye variations. Their single malt whiskey is reminiscent of a scotch, so I was less of a fan, but that's only reflective of my personal taste, not their product. They have an excellent cocktail menu that offers a variety of ways to experience their product in a less "throw 'em back" whiskey tasting.... (Am I the only one who feels the need to drink whiskey tastings like I'm in a saloon?) And they have a patio area for hanging out and enjoying that cocktail! Note, they are pretty hidden behind what appears to be an abandoned motel. Don't be scared, just follow the signs to the back where the tasting room is located. You'll be pleasantly surprised at their tasting room. The distillery has big plans for the facility to include a bed and breakfast eventually. I love this distillery. Small and friendly, it's a great place to stop for a cocktail or tasting. In fact, I like their gin more than any other gin that I've had. It's unique, and worth a try. You can join a tour, every hour or so, it's only 20 or so minutes and fun to see the property. Prices for bottles are relatively high, but if you can swing it, it's worth the splurge for one or two bottles for a special occasion or gift. I came here several years ago to try, and then came back a few years later and they had made lots of improvements and expansions. We just visited the Copper Fox Distillery yesterday for our wedding anniversary day. On Tuesday we visited Food For Thought and I came across Copper Fox's VIRgin and I loved the flavour of it. Almost 10 years ago while living in Shanghai a friend of mine who is from Australia told me how much he loved gin, and I never had it before, but I purchased him a bottle for his birthday... he let me try some and ever since I have been a fan. While in college I bartended for many years and as a mixologist I was able to try many different types of sprits through countless dozens of different tastings. Well, if you are a fan of gin, you will love Copper Fox's VIR "GIN". Though I would only recommend drinking it with a premier tonic, like that made by Fever Tree, which is a premium Indian tonic, it is not cheap, but seeing that when you use more mixer than alcohol, you do not want to use a cheap mixer. While heading back home to Atlanta, we stopped here at the Copper Fox Distillery. Fortunately for us, we went drove back home yesterday on Wednesday and they were open, as they are closed on Tuesdays. We first did a tasting of their whiskies and they were very good, smooth and silky with great aroma. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable, but before the tour I read a bunch of reviews and watch some videos by Rick Wasmund, the owner so I knew a little bit about the history of this place before coming here. Our tour guide was wonderful and showed us around the whole place and explained how the whole process works of making their whiskies. I love that they used this historical hotel from the 1950's and converted it into a distillery. It is great to see a place that takes pride in what they do, so much that they do everything by hand. I was impressed to hear that no matter how big and successful they become, they will continue to do everything by hand, and just hire more staff... instead of becoming automated like every other distillery does here in the United States. For $8 we were able to taste four different whiskies and afterwards we purchased two bottles of whisky and a bottle of their gin, as well as some merchandise. Hopefully in the future they make a gift package with all of their whiskies and their gin. That would make a perfect gift for a birthday, boss, wedding, anniversary, or holiday. My wife loves bourbons and whiskies and was extremely impressed with these guys. We cannot wait until they finish the remodeling of the hotel and turn this place also into a bed and breakfast. Wow! What a great place and even better whiskey. Their Rhye Whiskey is excellent - some of the best I have ever had. It was very smooth and satisfying to the taste. The outdoor venue was rustic but comfortable and we enjoyed both live music acts. Yes!! It's so great find a local business that's so passionate about what it does. I previously learned about Copper Fox from Farmers & Distillers in Washington, D.C.. When I found myself in the Williamsburg area, I had to pay Copper Fox a visit. Did a tasting of 8 different liquors produced by Cooper Fox. The tastings were quite small, so it's perfect to try everything without feeling like you've had much to drink. My favorites were the Rye Whiskey, single malt port-style barrel finish, and the bourbon mash. So smooth, and great for a variety of cocktails! I love how local their products are!! There's an option to also order several cocktails on their tasting menu. I tried the Mmmpeachment cocktail and the Old Fashioned. Both were so good!! Mmmpeachment had peach juice, rye whiskey, and a hint of mint and orange. The old fashioned was tiny, but solid!! I purchased the "Natural Blonde Mary" mix, which is delicious! It's made in small batches using yellow tomatoes (hence the "Blonde Mary") by John Aquino in Charleston, SC. Copper Fox staff drive all the way to Charleston to pick up their supply of the mix. It's nice and tomatoey and spicey! Copper fox makes their Blonde Mary using their amazing Rye Whiskey. I can't wait to try the mix at home the next time I host brunch! I also got to go on a tour of Copper Fox while visiting. Our tour guide was really well versed on all things Copper Fox and distilling. I love the whisky. I've been a fan since my first stop into the Sperryville location soon after it opened. (Back when that other Maker didn't appreciate your wax sealing the bottles!)I still enjoy my visits there, though I see some similar issues. I first visited the Williamsburg location about a year or two ago. At that point I enjoyed every aspect. This visit was a bit different. We started w a visit to the gift shop. We were greeted as the clerk finished closing out the tab for a customer. We were then invited (encouraged?) to not look around the gift shop but head on into the tasting room. We were invited to pick any seat with a vague gesture at a mostly empty space. We sat where we did last year to find the table sticky all over, with wet glass rings and 2 of the 3 chairs w seats uncomfortably in need of repair. As we sat the hostess picks up her conversation with family in the tasting room. She polled her workers and family to see if they were burned out on Christmas music (which had been playing) and switched to Fleetwood Mac. We were presented w menus and checked on quickly but needed more time. It seemed we were forgotten about for awhile and then a new server took our order. Drinks were enjoyed. Business picked up a bit (we rolled in around 5:45). When we left our original server cleared our glasses and a postage stamp sized piece of black cocktail napkin joined the remnant of a white one from another party. I love the whisky, and both locations are gorgeous in their own unique way. However, both locations need some of the same attention that goes into the distilling process aimed at how the locations are run for the public visitors. read more

This is a really cool place to visit. It looks like an old campus style hotel when you first pull in and the main tasting room is around the rear of the first building you see. However, it is a really nice place. They do free tours every half hour and there is plenty of parking. The lady that took us on the tour was fairly knowledgeable about the process. We did a tasting at the end of some of their whiskies. Unfortunately, their bourbon is not ready yet but the other stuff was pretty good. One big side note, they will have a new bar area, gift shop and visitors area opening in late Oct, i believe, and that will be a game changer for them in my opinion. The bar area is a speakeasy kind of area where you go through a bookcase opening and there are overlooks onto the processes that will be going on for the distilling process. They also have outdoor seating and a fire area. I want to go back after they get that area open! read more

We did A. Smith Bowman's distillery tour yesterday and Cooper fox was next on the list as they use bowman's bourbon barrels for their whisky. Tours are every 30 minutes. Morgan was our tour guide and he was amazing! Mr. Wasman, you need to reward him with a bottle of the Cognac Rye, Morgan deserves it and totally earned it. Morgan was able to give a great tour to where they rake and dry the barley, where it gets put in with the water and stored. So cool to see the old motel insides but not used as a motel. Luckily they were distilling today and we got to smell the whisky mash, it was potent walking in and then we got used to it. Pretty darn cool. Morgan helped us go through all the offerings for a tasting and guided us through our samples. He knew how to pour them out so the flavors didn't muddle. We told him we were traveling on an airplane and he gladly helped to bubble wrap our bottles. We can't get these great bottles on the west coast. He was also kind enough which online website to go to and order for shipping (www.pstreetwines.com) Really love the personal touch as he also knew which bottles were first fill in port barrels as it's not labelled. He said, "because i filled it myself." Lol, so glad he was our tour guide. If you are looking for a great tour, great tasting of whisky, think peaty scotch but american style for their single malt. Morgan described it perfect as scotch but with campfire smoke instead of lest smoke. He was spot on. Thank you and keep up the great work! We spent a lovely afternoon at Copper Fox for a tour and tasting on Sunday. My husband and I have toured numerous distilleries and this was truly the most informative we've ever been on. The tasting room was spacious and my husband enjoyed the Premium Flight. If you are not interesting in a tasting they have a pretty substantial cocktail and bar snack menu. He answered all of our questions and gave some great information about their process and how it is different. On our way to check out another brewery, I knew I wanted to stop in here to grab a bottle. We had a little bit of time to kill so we also grabbed a cocktail. This place is ADORABLE. It's a converted hotel and the main building is perfectly set up with a huge entry way, giftshop, and then bar area with plenty of seating. Each of the buildings is labeled outside and it looks like they've made great use of all their space. We were greeted super warmly immediately upon entering by the girl working the gift shop, and told we could look around then go through their bookcase to the bar - awesome! The two guys at the bar let me taste between two of their whiskeys (absolutely appreciated especially with COVID having changed certain things at places) and made our drinks really quickly. We sat outside where they had an adorable patio and games set up in what used to be the back parking area. I thoroughly enjoyed our stop here and will be coming back to hang out soon! read more

Stopped by for the first time on a (holiday) Friday afternoon and had no trouble finding a table. My husband and I enjoyed a tasting flight and two cocktails (old fashioned and Prescription Filled) in Copper Fox's cozy and inviting tasting room. Despite being slightly short staffed at the time of our visit, everyone was very friendly and hospitable. I'd mentioned in passing that we were celebrating a special occasion and I was surprised that we were then given a generous and totally unexpected discount when we went to pay our bill. They've made a loyal patron out of me. I'd like to catch the tour on our next visit. read more

Mark Twain once wrote, "too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough!" I concur with Mr. Clemens. This summer, my family journeyed to Williamsburg, Virginia. Prior to leaving, I did my research and was hell bent on doing at least one distillery tour. Luckily, there was one that caught my eye that was a very short drive from where we stayed. I knew nothing about Copper Fox Distillery before setting foot on the property. Now, I want to return so very badly. I am no expert on single malt whisky; however, I am no novice either. Real quick like, single malt whisky is made from 100% malted barley, not like US bourbon which is, at minimum, 51% corn. C.F.'s flagship whisky is a US made 100% malted barley. They make their whisky nearly exactly like scotch whisky. C.F. performs floor malting which means they spread the barley out on the floor and let it germinate. After it germinates they smoke the grain with local wood types. Scotch whisky is smoked with peat, one big difference here. C.F.'s whisky has a similar smokey flavor and smell. I was not aware of this, and upon going through the tour and the tasting afterward, I was so pleasantly pleased. I will not "give you the tour" in this review. I leave it to you to go to this wonderful establishment to see it first hand. I will tell you this; the fact that they converted an old hotel into a Distillery is amazing, (the owner lives there too!) The tour was good for all ages, kids to grandparents. The small bar in the back, where tastings happen had all sorts of merch and booze for sale. There was plenty for the kids to do while the parents "got educated". Our two daughters loved the tour because the tour guide let them "work the grains" in the malting room. They loved it. I LOVED IT! You can purchase products online or make a trip out of it. Nerds may not appreciate 3 1/2 - 4 year whiskey; that said, their Single Barrel "XO" hold its own with the big boys and dragged me to a 4th Star...they just need to make more. read more

I'm sure I'll be upgrading this to 5-stars after they open for "real". Attended the soft opening and was a little confused as the tasting room is all the way in the back with little signage. The main building up by the road is still vacant, the next thing you see is the distillery itself (where the tours take place), but you have to keep going down the hill to a small building behind the main one for the tasting room/store. At this time they only have the aged rye and gin, but both are great. I don't normally like gin as it is often too strong with juniper, but Copper Fox's has a balance of citrus, anise, etc. The single malt and "1797" whiskeys aren't available yet, nor are the unaged whiskeys, but when they do and they get a little more squared away, I'm sure they'll be awesome. read more

Have been to both locations and the experience is very different in both, but nevertheless, is really fun at each. The Williamsburg location is quirky in that it is located in what used to be an old, probably 40s motel. The main tasting room is very nice and the woman who attended to us was very knowledgable and pleasant. The various products that we tried were all exceptional and it was nice to see a place in Virginia distilling at such a high standard. Skip the colonial tourist stuff and swing by here. The staff were VERY friendly and able to answer all questions, about the spirits, and even the property itself, as it is a little odd that it is actually in an old hotel!! As we spoke with one of the employees they said they are planning to make some of the hotels a bed and breakfast which will be awesome!!! And another part of the hotel will hopefully be a restaurant!
