Stopped by New Kent Winery for an after hours beginners Salsa Class/event with Salsa Connection. The class was amazing, fun and perfect for beginners! We were able to learn some basic Salsa moves from our talented instructors followed by two hours of a social where we could use our newly learned moves dancing with others. New Kent Winery served as a stunning backdrop for the class with beautiful greenery and a gorgeous stone "dance floor". I indulged in one of their beer offerings and ordered some BBQ sliders off their food menu. The sliders were a decent food option but left a bit more to be desired considering the venue. The food ordering process was interesting for a winery. To order food, you place your order at the bar, receive a ticket and then pick it up at an estimated time from the food pick up window. I wish there was a buzzer or a way to have food delivered to your seat as it was awkward removing myself from conversations to check if my meal was ready. The covered stone desk was lovely but with these summer heats on the rise, some outdoor fans would be a welcome addition. We tried the flight of wine and beer and found ONE that was palatable, everything else was just off? It's kind of run like a fast casual place where you order at the bar and bring your drinks to a self-selected table. You get a ticket for your food and pick it up at the window. They don't have any buzzers though so you just have to check around the time estimate they provided. Their menu is mainly light bites and can be hit or miss. We've gotten cold food a few times, which could be due to the system I described above. I'm not a huge wine drinker and I like fruity and sweeter drinks so I've found the Sweet Virginia wine to be up my alley. I've always been drawn to the the white Merlot and I believe is a must-try if you've never had it! You have to buy a tasting ticket (I KNOW, it's not how it used to be, but stop complaining and just adjust to the social climate ) where you could just walk up before. Not a huge issue for me but I can see where ppl don't prefer it. Tasting was great and ended up getting a the reserve Chardonnay (very great overall white wine - not sweet) and some double barrel-merlot or something - we were already feeling gOoD so I don't remember lol. WINE: my favorite was the Norton - just a great full body red wine with dark-berry & bourbon notes. Just a quintessential piece in one's wine-snob collection. We stopped here on our way to Williamsburg. It's right off of 64. Super easy and convenient for a stop. They have wines and beers they make them all in house. We were greatly by a friendly lady who knew the background of the winery which was nice. I like to learn about wineries history. The grounds are beautiful with luscious vines. I had a 4 wine flight and a DIPA as they have both beer and wine here. I thought the wine was ok. I'm not a huge fan of VA wine as I'm used to CA, WA, and international wines which I just find better as a whole. That's not saying I don't like some VA wines, but I'm generally not a fan. They also have a solid food menu here but I didn't eat anything. They have a lot of outdoor seating options and I enjoyed sitting outside looking at the vines and just relaxing. That's a matter of preference and I never expect to like every drink-- the beauty of a flight is getting to try different things and discover what you do and do not like. However, it was just especially disappointing after the overpriced and underwhelming snack options. For half of what we paid, reheated frozen pretzels would have been satisfactory but at the current price they were definitely a letdown. They have a covered patio that's heated during the winter months and plenty of places to relax on the grounds when it's warmer. The staff is friendly and the facilities are really clean. The food was hit or miss. Picture finger/ shareable foods. We opted for a Greek charcuterie board, potatoes that were diced and topped with bacon and jalapeños. We also ordered the artichoke cheese dip. The cheese dip was delicious and the charcuterie board was fresh!! The cucumbers were nice and crisp I loved it. The potatoes were a little under cooked and lacked in flavor. We ordered so much stuff that we needed to go boxes unfortunately they didn't have any on hand so we had to put or food in freezer bags, that was weird. Oh my gosh, I love this winery! They offer a great selection of wine AND craft beer so every person in your group will be happy. All grapes are grown and harvested on the property. I was impressed with the quality of each of the wines in my tasting and purchased a few bottles on my way out. There is plenty of seating for visitors to sit and relax the serene views. Came here for the first time during a 5K run that they had. There were a lot of people here but plenty of staff to keep the lines moving. Because of the event I'm sure we didn't get the normal experience. But I would come back again. We decided to reserve a table so we would have a place to sit. But when the time came they said it wasn't table service so we sat in the sun and just had to get our own drinks. Each time we went to the bar we just bought a bottle. So we didn't experience an actual tasting. But overall I enjoy going to vineyards with friends and had a good time. read more

My wife and I go here about once or twice a year. She's the wine drinker in the family and has always enjoy their blanc. They really stepped up their menu with more options than a charcuterie board. The samosas were so good I ordered more and the buffalo chicken dip really hit the spot for me. Tasty and shareable, the pretzels they have are from their old menu, so I'm too scared to try them to see if they changed. I would first like to commend the blonde woman with glasses who provided exceptional customer service during my visit to this establishment. She was attentive, professional, and kind. Unfortunately, my overall experience here was nothing short of appalling, primarily due to the behavior of the manager, Freddie Kruger aka Leslie, whose actions were both unprofessional and, frankly, disturbing. I visited this winery on 11/18/24 around 1:30 PM with a friend while on my last day of a trip from Los Angeles. My friend suggested this place, but it turned out to be one of the worst experiences I've ever had. We ordered two wine flights and decided to sit outside to enjoy the beautiful weather. Almost immediately, flies fell into my wine, so I returned inside to request assistance. I sought out the kind woman who initially helped us, but instead, I was approached by Leslie, the manager. Her demeanor was hostile from the start. When I politely explained the situation and asked for a fresh glass of wine, she angrily denied my request, insisting there was no issue with the drink. When I showed her the glass to prove otherwise, she began to argue with me, placing blame on me for the situation. After a prolonged back-and-forth, she shockingly suggested removing the fly from the glass and insisted I drink the same wine. I was utterly stunned by her response. I calmly explained that as a paying customer, I expected a fresh glass since I hadn't even taken a sip. Her refusal and outright hostility escalated, and the anger and animosity in her demeanor were palpable. Thankfully, the woman who initially helped me stepped in and poured fresh glasses of wine, apologizing for her manager's behavior. However, Freddy Kruger aka Leslie continued her unprofessional conduct by insisting that I relocate to an upstairs seating area, as though I were a child being reprimanded. I chose to ignore her antics and instead focused on one of the other staff member, who explained the fly issue and assured me she would assist with anything else moving forward. The treatment I received from Leslie was unacceptable and deeply troubling. As an African American woman, I have unfortunately experienced similar discrimination in the past, but I refuse to support an establishment where such hateful behavior is tolerated. Leslie's actions were not only unprofessional but indicative of a deeper issue that needs to be addressed. To make matters worse, the food was mediocre and not worth the price. I strongly encourage others to find a different winery to enjoy. This place is poorly managed, and no customer should have to endure such treatment. Leslie should be held accountable for her behavior--her attitude and actions are entirely unbecoming of someone in a leadership position. read more

We were handed our wine and glasses to carry outside and tickets for the food which was supposed to be ready in 15 minutes. We then had to go back inside and pick it up and carry it outside. We had 6 people. The food was NOT ready - it was not ready for a total if 35 minutes and there was only one other group of 2! We asked for plates. They first said no then agreed to give us 2 plates FOR 6 PEOPLE!!! We had to make 2 trips as we couldn't carry it all With NO OFFER of help from any employee! smh. We ordered 2 orders of brie which came with small baguette sized sliced bread. We all had some of the 6 appetizers we ordered and still had a third of one of the bries left but no bread/crackers and NO SILVERWARE! How were we supposed to eat it?!! They offered to let us buy it! We asked for water (which is usually in self-serve water containers in every winery we've ever been to) but they don't have anything but bottles of water to purchase. We purchased 8 bottles of wine at $30 each, 6 appetizers at $14-$17 each plus tip with ABSOLUTELY NO SERVICE! You can do the math. My daughter said it was not like this the last time she was here. She was told COVID changed things. Maybe the management here has not heard but COVID is over! No more excuses for, not just bad customer service but NO CUSTOMER SERVICE anymore. My mom flew into Richmond and is most often not in VA. She texted "hey I know you and your boyfriend check out wineries or breweries in Sundays. Want to pick a winery and get a glass together. When we arrived we had a reservation for a fire pit for 3. The hostess told me our reservation was there but for a table number that didn't exist. Then she told us to just go out to fire pit 51. We went outside and there were no fire pits with numbers. I went back in to ask which was 51 and she told me to just sit at one and if people were at it she'd move them. That's fine. It was just a bit rude. We don't mind sitting with other patrons. But were simply trying to follow the wineries reservations and didn't need the rude attitude from beginning to end. We just joined another group since the hostess dismissed me when I tried to figure it out. Starting at 4:30 the staff hovered over us huffing and asking every 3-5 minutes if we were done with our charcuterie board that clearly had more food one it. When I asked at 4:45 if they were closing soon a young guy with black hair huffed and said not until six but we aren't to touch the wood after 5 pm. We never touched the wood by the fire pits. We were a party of three just relaxing and not even talking a lot. We finally just told him to take the charcuterie board because getting hounded about it was ruining the experience and relaxation. The wine is great. The location is great. But the staff was pretty short and unprofessional from beginning to end. (With the exception of the really nice woman who we ordered our wine and food from). I won't go back. The wine is a little higher in cost than most in the area and while it's good the staff ruined it for me. There is a lot of other wineries that make you feel welcomed in the area. We found this winery through Yelp on our way back from Virginia Beach. Very beautiful property and close parking right out front of the winery itself. We were greeted very kindly and asked if we were there for a wine tasting, wine club or just a visit. We were then invited to sit anywhere we liked and order from the bar inside. They produce both beer and wine but you can only have two small tastings to see what you might like. We ordered two beers (good), a $5 cake pop for our little and a pretzel. I was hoping to try a couple before choosing but the person pouring just listening to me talk about my typical favorite beers and didn't really help so I ordered one and went with it. We had to pick up our food order from another window even though you pay and tip right away which I want a fan off since how can you tip on food service before receiving it? Cake pop was small and pretzels tasted like they had been microwaved which was unfortunate since they were not inexpensive. I really enjoyed my visit to New Kent. Under new management for the past several years, they delivered a very interesting lineup of wines, including styles I almost never see. At 35 acres of vines/7000 cases a year, they aren't exactly small either. The tasting room is really well done, and the staff that helped me were always very friendly. They didn't have much in the way of food options, but the patio outside looked inviting. What I tried: Chardonnay (Oak and steel fermented): Pretty good; light and refreshing. The light oak was juuuust enough to give it some bite. Vidal Blanc: Semi-sweet (at best). Not my style though. White Merlot (merlot, but made without the skins so no red color): Very different; not sure how I felt about it. White Norton: Now THIS was different! Surprisingly good; maybe cranberry notes? Red blend: Merlot heavy but the cabernet franc shone through. Norton blend: Very nice; I don't know what they do with the Norton around here but they really surprised me with this grape.
