They only have packaged chips and peanuts for sale. If you are allergic, don't come. Peanuts are everywhere. 3. Service: one of them was awkward or borderline mean to me but nice to others including those in my group. I was also the only not-white person in the establishment the first 3 hours and joined by a black gentleman later. It is a very racially-uniform place. Bartender changed halfway through for our table (we didn't ask for it) and it was very pleasant. 4. Live music on certain days. The jazz band was a crowd favorite. Virago is an awesome distillery. I first learned about Virago after receiving a bottle of their Ruby Port Cask finished Rum as a gift. I had high expectations after trying some of their product at home and their tasting room didn't disappoint. Their seasonal menu had fun plays on classic cocktails that highlighted their spirits. Some of my personal favorites were the Hot Shot (which was especially great as it was a cold day) and Madhu Martinez. Be sure to pair your cocktail with a spirit flight so that you can try some of their unique and delicious gins and rums. My personal favorite standalone spirit was their Hibiscus Gin which really highlighted the floral/fruity notes of the Hibiscus. The outside feels a bit warehouse-y, but don't let this dissuade you from coming in. The inside is so aesthetically pleasing and stunning! ***EXPERIENCE*** I need to take a moment to tell you how beautiful the walls are. Powerful and heroic women are painted on them. (Which matches their name/theme as a whole) The colors are so calming and stunning. Whoever was in charge of interior design understood the assignment! The space is smaller, but comfortably fits about 40 people. We had a smaller menu for our evening, but I loved my piña colada. The highlight of the drink was the decently sized pineapple wedge. I loved the coconut flakes in the drink too. A very tasty and refreshing drink. ***PRICE*** With tip I paid about $17 for my drink. ***BATHROOM*** There are two single bathrooms here. They are very clean and match the stylish theme of the main room. ***CONCLUSION*** I'm looking forward to returning to do a tour of the space and try more of their tasty drinks! read more

Let's start with locating the place. Signage is minimal so look carefully. The tasting room is cute with a variety of seating choices from the bar to couches to a semi outdoor area. Food is limited but "carby". Always good when drinking. The spirits are an interesting mix. They do several gins and some liqueurs. They aren't bad. Their coffee liqueur is particularly good and low ABV if that's what you are looking for. My major issue with the place was the service. The staff seemed more interested in the iPad than us. Generally when I go to a distillery or winery for a tasting I would like the staff to tell me about what I'm drinking. What makes it special and why I should drink their specific version of whatever. Finally tried Virago for Thursday evening drinks! This place is unique in that it feels quaint and fun but relaxed like a brewery. It's a little hidden and off the beaten path but worth tracking down! The decor is so fun and all the staff were very kind. There is a variety of seating options including lounge seating, bar seating, high top and low top tables for 2 or 4, and a large table to seat a big group. I got the espresso rumtini which was a fun take on an espresso martini and the orange complemented nicely! We loved our time here. We were dragged here by family and I'm so glad. They have seasonal drinks that are great, but try the different rums. I'm not much of a shot person, but this is a sipping situation. I found I loved the Rum finished in Cognac Casks. Amazing. She even created a mocktail for my friend. My mom loved her gin drink, called "Snap Me Out of It". It was topped with a snap pea and very refreshing. We also tried "Girl in Red", which was a sweeter gin drink with rhubarb. My mom also had the Virginia Vesper and enjoyed it. I ordered the "Gold Room", which I can honestly say is my favorite drink I have ever had. It is a rum drink with many amazing ingredients, such as saffron, mango, honey and cardamom. This place is very charming inside, with colorful, fun, plush furniture. There is also an outside patio too, that is spacious and relaxed. Excellent vibe and service here. I can't believe it took me so long to visit Virago. What a lovely place! Their gin cocktails are top notch. I didn't try their rum cocktails, but I will next time. The atmosphere inside is so warm and welcoming, and the servers were friendly and helpful as well. I ordered the Wild At Heart as my first cocktail. It was fruity and soft and so well crafted. For my second, I teetered between the Coco Verde (a friend loved it) and the Clover Club. I chose the latter, and while it was okay, I definitely preferred the first cocktail more. My best friend recommended checking out Virago Spirits for our Richmond trip and I'm so glad we did. The GPS led us to a bunch of warehouses, and we were starting to wonder if the directions were bad, when we saw the sign for Virago Spirits. As we entered, we were welcomed by the sweetest lady. The tasting room and the garage are nicely decorated. You would not expect to find a place like this surrounded by warehouses. The tasting room was intimate and styled with mid-century modern furniture. We sat in the garage, from which outdoor string lights hung from the walls. We tasted the Four-Port Rum, Modern Gin with Oolong Tea, Kali Hibiscus Gin, and Coffee Liqueur. Of these four, we decided that we liked the Four-Port Rum the most. It has a nice blend of vanilla, tropical fruits, spiciness, and goes down very smoothly. My best friend and I liked it so much, we each bought a bottle for the road. We also had their Orange Julius, Coco Verde, and Gin Mule cocktails. All were delicious. If we had more time, we would have loved to stay and try more cocktails. read more

My husband and I stumbled upon Virago late one evening and they have been our go-to distillery ever since! The owners have created a very inviting, laid-back atmosphere. They are extremely knowledgeable and they treat every question as if it's a good question. The bartender Reign is amazing! Her attention to detail with every cocktail is AMAZING!! Their menus change seasonally and I try my best to try everything lol. My all time favorite is the Hemingway. It's made to perfection every single time! I also love their variation of the Cuba Libre. If you like Rum then this place is a must. The location is unique and might be a little hard to find as there is a tiny sign outside and its in an industrial setting. We made our first visit to Virago to see one of our favorite local groups, Whiskey Business, and were surprised and delighted at the atmosphere, incredibly delicious spirits, and friendly staff. Having visited many local distilleries, we typically find over-sweetened tasting cocktails and/or spirits that are just not well-balanced or conceived. Some places have us running to burn sage to exorcise the spirits, but not Virago. Gin drinkers, may I have your attention? We enjoy the aromatic and herbal gins out there and Virago's Kali Hibiscus Gin would give any one of them a run for their money. The deep ruby color and infusion with Oolong tea makes for an incredible tasting moment by itself or with traditional mixers of choice. Made as their Amelia cocktail with lemon juice, maraschino liqueur, creme de violette, and simple syrup, this drink is simply sublime. Their rum line offers another benchmark experience with a rich bouquet of vanilla and spices. Alone, the Four Port Rum is a show-stopping drink; however, the 151 Rum in Virago's signature, Promised Land, adds oat milk, coffee liqueur, cold brew, honey and walnut bitters, and it is absolutely delicious. The other drink you need to try is the Call Me Rita. Made with gin, thyme, lemon juice, a little triple sec and salt on the rim, the Call Me Rita turns the traditional margarita on its head and elevates the experience to a next-level olfactory, visual, and tasting experience. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't give a shout-out to the wonderful team that made our experience so great. Founders Brad and Vicki were welcoming, explained their drinks, and kept them coming. Truly wonderful people - all the staff were (Raine, too)! My final word on Virago is that you must make the trip, ask the team for what they are most proud of (my standard request of food artisans) and you will not be disappointed. read more

Been wanting to go here for a long time and always forget about it when I am in Scott's Addition. Finally made it this weekend and it was great. What a charming little place! Unique and welcoming decor, lighting, and furniture, and great glassware (I wanted to sneak some of it away to take home). It was pretty empty inside, most people were sitting in the little outside area in the warehouse, so we grabbed a spot at the small bar and asked the bartenders how everything worked. We shared a tasting of the list of rums and gins that they make (my fave was the hibiscus gin) and then ordered a Bloody Mary and Bramble On. Both were well made and the bloody mary was insane (see the photo)! This place is definitely hidden within some warehouses but it is worth seeking out if you are looking for a chill and charming atmosphere, great bartenders, and some pretty good local spirits. read more

Loved, loved, loved this place !!! Wow. We were visiting from out of town and heard great things about Virago on Reddit and TikTok, so we decided to stop by. Virago's tasting room is amazing! Walking up the gravel road (it is a distillery, after all -- they need space), there is a very small sign to let you know you're at Virago. Open the door, part the green curtain, and find yourself in a beautiful tasting room. For $20 each, we had one cocktail and a tasting of 3 liquors. We tried the gins and coffee liqueur. The hibiscus gin was amazing, and we ended up buying 2 bottles of the coffee liqueur because it was just that good. The sweet bartenders were wonderful and walked us through everything - the distillery, the start up story, the selling process, cocktail design and harvesting fresh ingredients each season. I had the snap pea cocktail, and it was very tasty and unique. We were incredibly impressed. I will absolutely be returning to Richmond JUST for Virago Spirits. Virago is an awesome distillery sitting cozily in an industrial warehouse area. Upon entering you quickly get a cool and unique/modern speakeasy vibe. I love the artwork, bright colors and the way everything is situated. The still area is pretty awesome too...if you are into that type of stuff. Enough about that lets talk about the booze. The Four port rum, Ruby Port Cask Finished Rum, Modern Gin and Coffee Liqueur is nothing like you have ever tasted, anywhere. Quality, quality, quality, love, persistence, countless testing, science and quality. Virago's products are just superior. The owners and the staff are full of information and you can ask them anything about the distilling process, aging processes, technical science and they offer tours if you are a super cool type of person. Customer service is big time here. Virago is definitely worth multiple visits!!! Pro tip, due to VA laws Virago can only offer you 2 mixed drinks with 1.5 ounces of alcohol in each drink or a tasting of their spirits to the accumulation of 3 ounces.
