Virago: people keep coming once the band starts
Bella J.

Solid 4.5 stars! 1. Drinks: are strong, very delicious and beautiful 2. Food: NOTHING! So bring your own or eat before coming. You need to plan ahead. They only have packaged chips and peanuts for sale. If you are allergic, don't come. Peanuts are everywhere. 3. Service: one of them was awkward or borderline mean to me but nice to others including those in my group. I was also the only not-white person in the establishment the first 3 hours and joined by a black gentleman later. It is a very racially-uniform place. Bartender changed halfway through for our table (we didn't ask for it) and it was very pleasant. 4. Live music on certain days. The jazz band was a crowd favorite. All in all, a good spot if you are in Richmond, VA.

I went last weekend for drinks and what's reminded that it is such a hidden gem in Richmond! I love all of their drinks and the atmosphere is cozy and cool! They had live music Saturday evening when we were there. The staff is friendly and helpful,it's a great place to go with a few people for a quiet drink!

I was very impressed with their cute glasses

Very fun place to go to! They had live music and good drinks and you can bring your own food :)

I find myself hella spoiled by this gin...perfectly crafted and the service is impeccable. The venue itself is a very small "hole in the wall" style, but inside is such a gem. You won't be disappointed. No food, just great drinks w excellent flavor combos.

Still love this place! Finally did a tour, and that was really cool to learn more about the business and how they process their inventory. Also -- Rain is the best bartender!

Gorgeous venue in Scott's addition. Tried the espresso martini (4 stars, A+) and bought a new chocolate spirit to bring home. (Amazing!) Service was wonderful- they answered all of my questions. They said they host book clubs and small events.

Virago is an awesome distillery. I first learned about Virago after receiving a bottle of their Ruby Port Cask finished Rum as a gift. I had high expectations after trying some of their product at home and their tasting room didn't disappoint. Their seasonal menu had fun plays on classic cocktails that highlighted their spirits. Some of my personal favorites were the Hot Shot (which was especially great as it was a cold day) and Madhu Martinez. Be sure to pair your cocktail with a spirit flight so that you can try some of their unique and delicious gins and rums. My personal favorite standalone spirit was their Hibiscus Gin which really highlighted the floral/fruity notes of the Hibiscus. I can only imagine it would go well in a Collins style cocktail.

Came here for a book club night with The Richmond Experience and loved it! They specialize in gins and rums. ***LOCATION*** It's near Hardywood and Richmond SPCA. The outside feels a bit warehouse-y, but don't let this dissuade you from coming in. The inside is so aesthetically pleasing and stunning! ***EXPERIENCE*** I need to take a moment to tell you how beautiful the walls are. Powerful and heroic women are painted on them. (Which matches their name/theme as a whole) The colors are so calming and stunning. Whoever was in charge of interior design understood the assignment! The space is smaller, but comfortably fits about 40 people. We had a smaller menu for our evening, but I loved my piña colada. The highlight of the drink was the decently sized pineapple wedge. I loved the coconut flakes in the drink too. A very tasty and refreshing drink. ***PRICE*** With tip I paid about $17 for my drink. ***BATHROOM*** There are two single bathrooms here. They are very clean and match the stylish theme of the main room. ***CONCLUSION*** I'm looking forward to returning to do a tour of the space and try more of their tasty drinks!

Let's start with locating the place. Signage is minimal so look carefully. The tasting room is cute with a variety of seating choices from the bar to couches to a semi outdoor area. Food is limited but "carby". Always good when drinking. The spirits are an interesting mix. They do several gins and some liqueurs. They aren't bad. Their coffee liqueur is particularly good and low ABV if that's what you are looking for. My major issue with the place was the service. The staff seemed more interested in the iPad than us. Generally when I go to a distillery or winery for a tasting I would like the staff to tell me about what I'm drinking. What makes it special and why I should drink their specific version of whatever. It felt as if we were disrupting her every time we had a question. Not a bad place but they need more attentive staff.

Finally tried Virago for Thursday evening drinks! This place is unique in that it feels quaint and fun but relaxed like a brewery. It's a little hidden and off the beaten path but worth tracking down! The decor is so fun and all the staff were very kind. There is a variety of seating options including lounge seating, bar seating, high top and low top tables for 2 or 4, and a large table to seat a big group. I got the espresso rumtini which was a fun take on an espresso martini and the orange complemented nicely! The drink was $14 which is a more than I prefer to spend for drinks but nice for the overall experience of the place.

Yes yes yes! Thank you!! Fantastic experience here. Ayla took excellent care of us. She is very knowledgeable about all spirits and made great recommendations. She even created a mocktail for my friend. My mom loved her gin drink, called "Snap Me Out of It". It was topped with a snap pea and very refreshing. We also tried "Girl in Red", which was a sweeter gin drink with rhubarb. My mom also had the Virginia Vesper and enjoyed it. I ordered the "Gold Room", which I can honestly say is my favorite drink I have ever had. It is a rum drink with many amazing ingredients, such as saffron, mango, honey and cardamom. This place is very charming inside, with colorful, fun, plush furniture. There is also an outside patio too, that is spacious and relaxed. Excellent vibe and service here. If I lived in Richmond, I would be a regular here. I highly recommend coming here.

The modern gin is my favorite

Love Virago Spirits! Both the spirts they make and their tasting room. This is a family owned business and you feel welcomed the moment you step in their cozy tasting room. Comfy chairs, bar or table seating and both inside and patio options. The cocktail menu changes seasonally which is a nice touch and I love the beautiful and unique glassware. They make several rums, modern gin and an assortment of limited release liquors like coffee, cherry and chocolate. My favorites are the Four Port Rum and Modern Gin. The Gin is infused with oolong tea givining it an unique flavor profiles and smooth finish

We loved our time here. We were dragged here by family and I'm so glad. They have seasonal drinks that are great, but try the different rums. I'm not much of a shot person, but this is a sipping situation. I found I loved the Rum finished in Cognac Casks. Amazing. In fact, I bought the bottle for a very decent price and it's One of the best cask rums I have ever had. Give them a try if you like Rum!!

My "Korean short rib" was a beautiful cut, first sliced and over marinated, ruining it with salt, then cooked on a high temp flat top, rendering the delicious beef tough, mouth-burning in its saltiness, and chewy. Absolute protein abuse. Thus was served on a rice cake that was ice cold cooked white rice seared and pressed in a pan. Could have worked if it was still warm, with a fluffy or chewy interior. As it was, it was brittle, hard, and unpleasant, just waiting to chip a tooth or dislodge a filling. Wildly overrated. Sorry to the very kind bar and kitchen staff. I took a few bites and rejected the food. I was not forced to pay.

It was a great way to keep people busy while they waited. We had a reservation and the waitress seated us after what seemed like 2 mins. Seth was our server, he was friendly and knowledgeable and attentive. Since it was our first time here, and first time actually trying (good) wine, he was able to provide us with samples and give us his opinion on foods. Started off with the pretzel bread, it was amazing! Such a cool concept (they also use the pretzels as croutons in the salad) speaking of salad, the Caesar salad we ordered was wonderful, crispy and cold. We ordered the drunken shrimp which was delicious, crispy, and complimented very well with a combination of the flavors and sauces. I ordered the seafood risotto and usually I'm not a fan of risotto or it's not my go to, it ended up being one of the best things I've had! The flavors were so good combined and the seafood was nicely cooked and seasoned. My bf got a dish (I forgot what it was called) but had noodles, chicken over a lemon sauce and capers) his was fantastic as well! The fingerling potatoes also had a lot of flavor, almost an au gratin style! Of course, we couldn't finish dinner and my drinking a whole bottle of wine without dessert, we got the smores dessert which was amazing. It has 4 different layers of flavor and every bit was fantastic. As first timers, we will be back! Seth was a great waiter and made the experience good. The service and timing of food was great, and the food itself was phenomenal. This place is the definition of wine and dine! It's busy but spacious with a good vibe.

We were hoping to find a vineyard and found Spring Run on one of our searches. We were unable to reach anyone by telephone at first but it was already kind of late in the day so we just drove over there and unfortunately for us, we happened to go when it was closed. We called while we were in the parking lot and the super friendly owner answered and apologized that she was closed that day but talked us into visiting them the next day. We almost didn't make it the next day but we managed it and I'm so happy that we did! The owners are super friendly and explained the history of the vineyard and it was so beautiful and peaceful to just sit there and enjoy some wine and cheese and talk to the owners. We did wine flights and my favorite was their blackberry wine which we both ended up taking bottles of home with us. I thought the blackberry wine would be too sweet as I'm not a fan of sweet wine but it was more fruity than sweet and had the perfect taste. We also tried the Goot Essa Cheese and Rip Rap crackers and I can honestly say that it was some of the best cheese I had ever tasted! It's a 3 year sharp cheddar and it went perfectly with our wine flights! We also ended up taking a couple souvenir shirts with us as a memory to our awesome experience. Both helpful with tips on what to order from their beer and wine options based off what we told them of our tastes. The grounds and building were very well kept. We chose to sit outside so our kids could run around (6 kids between us and our friend's family). They tried to light a fire for us, but that was the one downfall: all the fuel was wet from recent rain I think, so the fire never really took and we just had smoke for a while and no warmth or flames to enjoy watching. But they tried! We enjoyed all the wines we sampled, and went home with one bottle. All that I tried were dry, well-bodied and smooth. My husband only found the beer so-so, so next time we go he'll probably stick to the wines that he also enjoyed from tasting my flight. The soft pretzels are huge, delicious and delivered hot and fresh. The cheese sauce for dipping them was really tasty and much better than most cheese sauce offered for soft pretzels elsewhere. The staff was very courteous, offering us blankets as it was chilly outside and they saw the fire wasn't thriving. We are only 25 minutes from them, and we'll definitely go back; we were very happy with our visit!
