Since I read Cope manufacture's boat canvas covers, Cope may help me with my improperly sized Jeep cover and soft top window. I met the owner, Shane Cope. After telling Shane my situation, he said let's go look at your cover. Within 10 minutes, Shane showed me a different process of placing the cover on, and it fit perfectly! Shane then looked at my soft top window and 15 minutes later had it installed. It was so refreshing to have a local business owner provide the necessary assistance, and he would not take a dime from me. I drove up from Cape to have them install a 9.9 Kicker motor on my Lund. Dropped it off and picked up couple weeks later. I wish I could give less than one star for the service department at Cope Marine, in O'Fallon, IL. First, we took our boat there for new starter and flywheel, two years ago and they pulled the engine and put it back in but outdrive was completely out of alignment with the engine so we been using the boat for a year vibrating down the river. I did not find this out until this year. This year we hit a log in the river and brought the boat in for running rough and visual damage to the cavitation plate. They fixed the visual damage but got the boat back still running rough with the oil funnel still in the oil fill hole. They didn't even start this boat. We bring the boat back for still running rough. Kristin says well you signed off on the repairs so this is your problem. We signed off on what Cope said would fix the boat, but they take no responsibility. Long story, short, when we brought the boat back in for still running rough, they gave it a compression test and text us that the compression was all over the place and we need to get a tune up. We just had them put in new plugs two years ago when they replaced the started and flywheel but they have no idea. We instead just pick up the boat but now it won't even start. We sold the boat for thousands of dollars less than it was worth only for a real mechanic to find out that the electronic choke was not hooked up to the carburetor keeping it on max choke, speedometer was not hooked up, there was no compression issues and while doing this compression test hooked up the plug wires in the wrong place, they left a washer under the gasket on the lower unit and ruined that when they pulled the engine. If I could just warn you to stay away from the service dept at Cope in O'Fallon, you will save thousands just staying away from the shit show. I even reached out to them and they have no comment, but are completely incompetent on service. read more

I took my one boat in to get a ladder installed I talk to one of the employees their name Laurie she ordered the latter for me and assured me that I can get it installed the following week she quoted me a price of $100 to 150 to install it I drop my boat off when I come to pick it up I had a $300 bill I questioned it to the service manager and the lady told me that's what the bill is as I was walking out the door I ended up speaking to The owner of the dealership what a huge liar he told me that the bill was correct when I went to pick up my boat the mechanic I talk to told me it only took an hour to do the whole project they charged me for three Be aware of this place I would never go back the owner is a very rude Untrustworthy person read more

I went to Cope Maine for a simple quote on a simple boat trailer hub job because my hub blew out on my boat trailer. I was in no rush but checked in randomly to see if the quote was ready, I was ignored by the staff and not given any care or attention or answers I needed. Then I get a call one day saying its all done and ready to be picked up, to my surprise. I never got a quote, I never authorized repairs, I never authorized any money to be spent or any parts to be bought. For one hub replacement they wanted to charge me over $1000. They bought two entire complete hub, brake and rotor kits, they predicted I would have wanted a spare kit. Remember I never got a quote. The owner Ken is who I dealt with the most and he was the rudest person I ever dealt with. I, the customer was always wrong to Ken. Ken attacked me verbally with rudeness and no common sense or good business practice. I told him I'm not paying for spare parts I didn't ask to be purchased. I told him I am only paying for the services I would have wanted if given the chance. But all I wanted was a quote and then a conversation, this never occurred. Ken decided to buy over $1000 of parts without my consent or knowing the customer would want them or pay for them, bad business practice. Ken attacked me verbally with insults to my character and knowledge. Ken never on his own offered an apology. Ken agreed that his employee should have not bought those parts without approval. I told Ken I was military and needed a good shop nearby and was surprised to be treated this way. Ken in the heat of his angry upset rant, went in the back of his shop and found an employee who was prior military and got info, then came back to me and used that info to make a direct and purposeful attack on me and the Coast guard and the entire military. He made fun of me for being the rank I was, he made fun of me to my face about my knowledge and why I was a certain rank In the military with 10 years in. Very sad for an adult man. I also gave all the original parts to KEN and his shop like the rotor and brake assembly and brake pads and wiring because it was all brand new, I'm very accurate and on top of my stuff and made sure they had the parts because I expected them to be put back on. They lost my original parts and Ken called me a liar and said I never gave them the parts. Because of all of this, this brought the OWNER of Cope Marine, KEN, to the lowest level an adult man could go. He is a garbage human being and rude and the worse owner of a small business I've ever met. Also everything in their store can bought for A LOT cheaper on Amazon or Walmart with free shipping. VC MARINE in Granite City is amazing and is now my favorite boat shop place. VC Maine has a great business practice and a great staff and they call you with quotes as requested. This is my first review ever on yelp and its accurate and true and I just wanted to share the experience I had with Cope Marine and make others aware of what happened to me. Please rethink going there and research your options. read more

I took a used Stratos bass boat that I had recently purchased to Cope Marine for a full engine and hull check plus the addition of an on-board battery charger and batteries. This boat was a craigs list purchase and the owner said that he hadn't used it in a year+ but he also said that it ran fine last time out. Upon initial check- out, Cope told me that the engine was missing on 2 of its 4 cylinders (1991-ish 90hp Johnson) and that they had to replace an electronic component also costing approx. $350. They also installed the batteries and charger I had requested to bring the system to 24V. Interestingly enough this boat was initially sold to its first owner (I am the 3rd) by Cope Marine, and still had Cope Marine stickers on the boat transom and trailer. They never called me during the two weeks that they had my boat to ask me if I wanted work done or give me an update. When I went to pick up the boat they presented me with a bill for $2600, which included almost $1000 of electrical labor. This was almost what I paid for the boat-motor-trailer ($3000). After getting over my sticker shock, I reluctantly paid this seemingly excessive bill to get my boat back so I could take it out. After taking the boat to Carlyle lake the next day, the motor started acceptably and we idled out of Allen branch. When I passed the outer buoy, I advanced the throttle to WOT .... and the engine didn't rev up at all. Only by having my girlfriend sit on the bow, and waiting several minutes with the throttle at WOT did the engine VERY SLOOOOOOWLY decide to rev up. Throttling back down and attempting to throttle back up produced the same results time and time again. Calling Cope the next day, they insisted that my problem was likely a prop that was too big. What I couldn't understand about that is that they had the boat for 2 weeks - why had they not looked at the prop and checked to see if it was at least a possibly appropriate match for the motor. I was not comfortable taking it back to Cope to have them charge me for another outrageously expensive workup, so I took the boat to Belleville Sports Sales (BSS). They discovered that the boat was not firing on 2 of its 4 cylinders !!!! BSS checked out the engine, disassembling the electrical etc which all checked out ok. BSS did replace the spark plugs which they said were not the "most appropriate type" for my engine. After they put things all back together, I retrieved my boat. I took the boat back to the same spot on Carlyle Lake, idled out the Allen branch, advanced the throttle to WOT and the boat lept out of the hole immediately and ran perfectly. My rpms were correct for the engine (5500) so the prop was never the issue at all. Cope's outrageous overcharging me for: (1) an engine check-out and component replacement that resulted in an engine that still did not run and required me to pay an additional $350 to have the engine checked out after paying Cope $2600 (2) an outrageous almost $1000 for electrical labor to check my boat, engine, and trailer out and install 3 brand new batteries and a new trickle charger in my bilge/storage. I am an extremely dissatisfied customer who feels like I was totally taken advantage of, overcharged, and returned a boat that did not work as promised. I will not be patronizing Cope Marine in the future. read more
