I have visited four vinyl record stores in the Chicago area and Hyde Park had the widest selection…read morefor me - Soul, Disco, House. I was there well over an hour and spent over $500 in used and new vinyl. I felt that the prices were fair based on rarity and quality of the records. There were some new 12" records that were priced bit higher than I would like so I passed on them. The young man that checked me out found me a big box for my selections so that I could easily mail them to myself. My only criticism is that there were major stacks of vinyl behind the counter that hadn't been put out for sale yet. I had a fear of missing out there! I will definitely be back on my next visit to Chicago. This place is a staple for Hyde Park.

My boyfriend and I go up to the front and kindly ask if we could listen to a record and the ignorant employee with the gray hair stated only if we wanted to buy that record. He repeated this ignorant statement three times to us. How will I know if I want to buy it if I haven't heard it? It is no longer the 90s we have streaming nowadays I could've just looked this up on my phone but to be respectful I opted for the record player. The employee said I'd have to give him my drivers license in exchange for the needle. I did so, I listened to the record it did not please me. I took the needle off went back up to the front and retrieve my license. We then continued to look around for other records but that experience totally threw me off to the point where I didn't want to listen to anything else because of how rude the workers were. My boyfriend has been going there for years and encountering that was shocking. I suspect it's due to prejudice! Fortunately we love music and we did buy the records we came in there looking for. But I would never go back here again!

Overview: Friendly, and knowledgeable owners, with a small…read morecollection of hard to find music (vinyl and CDs). Unfortunately, much of the collection has yet to be priced or cleaned. The Good: I would pay just to chat with the owners. These guys are a fountain of knowledge when it comes to music, especially Chicago-based music. If anyone can ever pull together the funds to open a Chicago Music Museum, these are the first people you want to talk to. The Bad: The shop needs a deep cleaning. A lot of the music is unaccessible and will take unpacking and "digging" to find what you want. The music that is accessible, for the most part, is not protected by plastic and most items are in "good" to "poor" condition. You will be hard pressed to find any pristine items here. And, unfortunately, prices do not reflect the condition. All items seem to be priced at the high end of the scale. Conclusion: A record shop worth visiting... yes, it is worth the drive if you are not from the area. You will find records you've never seen before, and may never see again, but be prepared to pay higher than online prices.

We were drawn in by the jazz music playing right outside their store. They have LOTS of options,…read moreon both cds and vinyl. The workers were really nice and chatted with us while we looked around. Both my husband and I enjoy vinyl so we really enjoyed looking around. My husband picked out a few things, and commented he wants to try to come out here with his dad because he loves the music sold here. If you're looking for a solid place to buy music and love oldies, I'd recommend checking this poace out when you're in the area.
