Gem of a bookstore with an excellent and well curated selection of adult and children's books. Happy to find a section focused on local authors in addition to books about Chicago. I explore as many bookstores as possible and was delighted to find 2 books about Chicago by local authors that I never found before. They also have unusually sturdy and very well made totes and tee shirts with images from Beverly on them. Perfect for gifts as well as use by myself for heavy items. This was my first time in the bookstore but it was distinctive enough of a bookstore with a very friendly and welcoming staff that I plan to come back soon. Excellent bookstore in Beverly, I found this through exploring the neighborhood from the Open House Chicago events. They have a great young adult/kids section on one side and a nicely curated section on the other, with a mix of new and old books. Promoting liberal values based on their signs and signals, we need more bookstores like this everywhere. read more

I have been coming to this book store ever since I was a kid and it was at their last location around the corner. Very nice bookstore with kind and helpful employees who always make you feel welcome and are always willing to help you search for a specific title, or recommend books! They have a large selection of books and the layout is easy to navigate. I always loved how they leave note cards everywhere of employee recommendations, in case if I am not sure what I want to read next! Recently, (Valentines day) they have a section of "blind dates" where they took a few books and covered the title and put brief descriptions on them, so the reader can go on a "blind date" with a book! Great idea! I love the pride they have for Chicago, with a section of books by local authors, books about Chicago, and art about Chicago! Prices are average- what you would find at any other book store, so shopping here, you would spend the same amount of money while supporting a local business! Every book I have bought from here has been in great condition, if any of them were used, I wouldn't have guessed! They accept used books in return for a certain percent off your purchase, which is a great way to save some money and be sustainable! read more

Hubby and I were exploring the Beverly/Morgan Park neighborhoods this afternoon. Thanks to the $8 Metra Weekend Pass, from LaSalle Metra station to Beverly= twenty (20) minutes worth of smooth train-ride. Although hubby wasn't happy because he couldn't make it to the Beverly Record Shop since it was on the opposite direction from the Original Rainbow Cone, I sort of made it up for him with the discovery of "Bookie's," a new and used bookstore next to the 7-11 convenient store, near W. 103rd. and S. Western Ave. The guy who greeted us, whom I assumed as the owner, was very nice. We told him that we came from the north side and found this place via Yelp. Apparently, they welcome used-book donations. By doing so you can get a discount on your purchase. Hubby got excited when he saw a sign saying "Irish books" in Irish, with an arrow pointing to a particular shelf. Well, there wasn't a single book written in Irish, yet he found a book he liked talking about Ireland. If you know someone who is preparing for ACT, SAT, or other entrance examinations (GRE, GMAT, or LSAT), many study aids are available for sale. It's a cute family-owned bookstore. If you happen to be in the area, stop by, relax and unwind, and grab a book or two with you on the road! read more

I wasn't too impressed with Bookie's. I don't understand all the high ratings regarding Bookie's. I donated books to them. Upon entering the store, I was not greeted. There were three people working at the register. They did not look too busy! As I was donating the books, the clerk stated they do not accept books without sleeves. The book was in very good condition. They are getting these books for free. I did not even receive a thank you from the clerk after I donated the books. I will not be returning! read more

Really nice used and new bookstore. I found a few hidden gems. There was definitely a heavy local Chicago section as well as a lot of Irish and Irish American titles. Everyone was so nice. I very much liked the displays too. Will definitely be back! read more

I've been going to Bookies since I was a kid. We used to take our bikes up there with bags of books to get store credit. They were very kid-friendly then, and continue to be. It's a very old-school store. All store credit gets stored on index cards (pretty sure they still did this last time I was in this year). They have a "free book" cart for teachers (with ID). I love this place because they have a great selection of new and used books. Note that store credit means A DISCOUNT on the price on the book, not full coverage of the cost of the book. read more

If I could give them 10 stars, I would. What would I do without Bookies? For someone like me who never has enough to read, and loves the notes you can sometimes find in used books, this is a gem. I found a poetry book here that I prize to this day. Easy on the budget too! read more

This is a very cool bookstore. I finally got a chance to visit and was surprised by the huge selection. I ended up going for a particular book and buying a few more. Also, the owner/team is very helpful. Around the holidays, I was looking for a book that was sold out in most stores. They had a last copy that the owner was nice enough to ship in time for gifting. Hmmm, I could swear I had reviewed Bookie's. Guess not. Anyway, it's a nice small, neighborhood bookstore. Nice staff, decent prices, and I always do try to stop by whenever I'm in this area. Only thing I'm a little sad about is that they used to be open till 8pm, and they stopped doing that at some point to instead close at 7pm. But that's their own choice. And like others said, they're in a strip mall on the south side of 103rd St. slightly west of Western, next to a 7-11. read more

I've been coming to Bookies for over 20 years. The business has gotten even better with the new owner. The store has always been clean and packed with used books, but these days it's well organized and stocks new books as well as games and gifts. They still allow you to bring in your used books for credit that can be applied to a percentage of your purchase. If you're looking for a particular used book, you can let them know and they'll keep an eye out for it. Allison, who I believe is the owner, is a voracious reader who has offered many great suggestions when I've asked. I no longer live in Chicago, but every time I come home, I stop by to browse and buy a few books. read more

The new location is fabulous. Just a fantastic, fun, throwback bookstore! I've been in there three times since they have moved, and I could live in this place. Like I said, it's a throwback bookstore, the kind that used to dot the North Side. Browse and have fun! Found a great edition of Spoon River Anthology--the same edition I read when I first discovered the book decades ago at age 16--and for that alone, I'd go to war for this place. It's nice to have this in the neighborhood. Many times I've found great deals on new and used books, and I've been able to pick up required reading material for my kids when they were in high school. Because my kids attended local high schools, Bookie's has a clientele that recycled their books through them. The staff is friendly and helpful, and they give credit for books you donate. I never walk out empty-handed, but I'm kind of a book addict, so I have to force myself to limit my visits. I wish they had a larger store! This is browse-friendly but very cramped. read more

Love bookies! Their prices are reasonable and the discount for donating books to them makes it even more affordable. They have a solid selection of books and despite the size of the store, it is pretty browse friendly. This place is wonderful. It is a surprise hidden around every corner. Each time I walk in there I walk out with a wonderful collection of books. The discount for the books you turn in is great, on top of their already reasonble prices. even my children like going in there to look for their books. They are cramped to the gills, but all neatly organized and cared for. This is a true gem. Best thing about this store is it is locally owned and operated, not some big chain. read more

I went in for a collection of Jane Austen books for my aunt for Christmas. Not only did they have a book that suited my needs perfectly the staff was super friendly and gave me an excellent price. That price was even lower when they checked that I was a loyalty member there. I signed up when I bought the game of thrones books (1 thru 5) a long time ago. The shop has moved to a new location and looks better than ever. I plan on going back to get another book my aunt wants since it is so price friendly. Bookies is the best bookstore to support! It is a book recycling plant. They have a great system where you can donate your books back to them. I purchase all my books from here (check your school reading list -all the books are usually there!) and return them afterwards. I now receive a discount every time I purchase books. Allison has done an amazing job of keeping Bookies up-to-date. They can locate and purchase hard to find books. Well organized, quaint, and friendly. Bookies is the place to go if you're trying to stay local, get a pretty decent deal on a good read, or need to pick up a book for your child's third grade reading assignment. (As I was in the store, several parents came in asking for a book that was on their child's reading list.) The storefront is a little sketchy...with part of the outside walls of the store boarded up, but once you walk in, you won't be disappointed. From children's books to mystery novels, you can find some great finds here. Personally, I was a little disappointed in some of the "used" book prices. For example, for a used paperback fiction book, like by authors such as Jodi Picoult or Sophie Kinsella, you will be paying $4.19. Yes, that is a huge discount from the cover price, but perhaps I was looking for a little bit more of a deal. The fact that returning old books gives you a discount on future purchases probably makes up for this. The store is mapped out very well with twists and turns of new finds. Several 3 for a $1 carts linger among the aisles...some with better book selections than others. Bookies is really the only book option in Beverly since Borders closed, but never the less a good bookstore. Very small but they optimize the space well. Helpful and friendly staff. The only ding is the almost impossible to understand discount system for buying books if you have already sold books there. Maybe it's just me!!!! Lol. read more

The Bookies is great! Fab prices, so clean and organized. Why pay full price, why not support an independent local bookseller. I bought some VHS tapes for my cottage in MI for $1 each! It's a great cozy shop & you can get anything new or used. If you bring in your old books then you get discounts for purchases. This is a great store! read more

This is a small, neighborhood bookstore with a recently expanded storefront. It's been in business awhile and is one of the only independent bookstores for quite some distance. If you're in search of something like a typical high school reading assignment book or your classic dime a dozen novel this is your place. Honestly came in looking for something very specific(books on beer and brewing). They had a couple but not the super advanced pinpoint section stuff you'll find at a Borders or Barnes and Noble. It's extremely difficult to manage, let alone expand a business like this with the advancement of virtually everything going digital. Prices are reasonable for books, I think it's hard to determine a price on a book because the value is really up to the person reading it and what they get out of it. Overall if I'm looking for something new to read or in search of something not too specific in terms of reference I would return. Service was friendly and helpful. Worth a visit if you like smaller shops with more of an intimate atmosphere. read more
