My husband wanted to visit Chicago and when I mentioned wanting to seek out some bookstores, he added this place to the list. When trying to find the place, the person we asked turned out to be the owner, so he not only walkd us there, he let us in as well. The Underground Bookstore, according to their website, has been around for over 30 years. I really enjoyed just looking around as the store was packed full of books and home decor. My husband ended up buying a Harriet Tubman plaque type item for our home, as well as a book. I would definitely recommend The Underground Bookstore to anyone looking for books or decor relating to African and African American history. I will be asking my husband to come back next time as there was a $45 book about poetry that was out of my price range this trip. read more

I cannot thank Underground Bookstore enough for doing everything, and I mean everything possible, to find the book I needed along with it being in my budget! I haven't gone in this store in years. However. the last time I was in was Amazing! I bought se Black art which I have on display to this day. The book collection at that time was great. That was my go to store for all my Black books and pictures. The service was very good. It's been a part of the community for many years. read more
