The food is just okay but if you are a Trump Supporter BEWARE. The owner walks from table to table threatening all Trump Supporters that he will kick them out. He told me he wants to kill President Trump.... hang him high! He came back to my table 3 times to discuss how he hated President Trump... I will never go back. First visit.... the owner was one of the "servers" for a few and was very nice with supplying some beer samples (they had a decent selection). Found one I liked but he never came back, by the time another server finally made it to our table they were out of that beer, how does that happen?! The food was average, nothing to shout from the mountain tops about. Apparently they were in the middle of a shift change so we never had another server come back to us. I'm willing to give 5 stars to any place that serves a combination of those those two classics as a Reuben Dog. Knocked my socks off. Ordered thirds and my wife decided she was going to walk home. The beers were not choice but my palate is that of commoner compared to the brilliant, royal minds that came up with the Reuben Dog. A local neighborhood hang out. Folks of all ages who were all very friendly. We were greeted by a waiter immediately and seated. Nice looking place and very clean. I stay out of my way in Bay City when I travel for work so that I can come here; there's something about a family-owned restaurant that makes me happy. In the several times I've been here, I've learned about the extraordinary measures the owner has taken to care for his customers, including half price for GM employees on strike (2019) and adapting to COVID to continue to make food for the community at a more-than-fair price. The entire staff is having fun and 100% friendly. There is usually a fresh lake perch menu item, I recommend trying it if you haven't had it before. Great food and great service, been here a few times and every time we've been the owner has come to our table and asked how we were enjoying everything. Hot Dogs are great, they also have a good selection of sandwiches and beer on tap. I did order a steak sandwich on one of my visits and it was not what I was expecting getting them at other places in town. Went to the bar to ask where our food was and was told, 'It's coming..we had a big party come in' I believe they could have told us that ahead of time, 'It's going to take an hour to get your food.' Found ourselves a table and got greeted (if you could call it that) almost immediately - but the person dropped 2 sets of silverware (we had 3 guests) without saying a word and left us wondering who our server was. Beer was flat (bud light) and my fiancé would have asked for a new one but a lot of other guest's beer looked flat too so he just drank it. The pretzels were really good! Barbecue boneless wings were as well (though personally I would have preferred to just dip them in the sauce instead of them drizzling the sauce on top as they weren't evenly covered). I also like that they weigh the wings there, you can choose between 1/2 lb for under $10 or 1 lb for $11! Chili cheese fries were alright but it looked like they were just popped in the microwave. I had also ordered the Irish potato skins but after the other food was dropped and we didn't receive the potato skins, we flagged down the waitress to check on the order and she came back a couple minutes later to say they didn't have any more potatoes for the night. She replaced my meal with the broccoli and cheddar poppers which came out very quickly compared to the rest of the food and she did end up comping this off of the bill for us too! The broccoli cheddar poppers were piping hot and soooo yummy. The person who "greeted" us in the beginning also randomly came back up to the table and stood and stared at us for a few seconds...which was very weird.... Overall, I think I'll get takeout next time. read more

Our first time in Bay City and what a treat to find Coonan's! It is a small local Pub that was packed. We walked is as a family walked out so we were lucky to have gotten a seat. It took a minute for our server to get to us, but when she did she was wonderful. She knew she had never seen us. asked us where we were from. When she heard we were from a town west of Chicago she told the owner. He was so excited to come and visit our table introduce himself. Kim (the owner) was personable and respectful. The food was very good, we both had sandwiches. They were nice sized and put together well. The soups were outstanding!! The assortment specialty brews was amazing. Love this place. It's small and homey. The food isn't excessive in size but it is always delicious. The owner and servers have always been great from the beginning. My only complaint would be how loud it gets when it's busy along with the amount of belligerent townies that think it's their personal beer tent. Not a big deal in the end though. The location is a little off the beaten path in the Johnson business district, but the place is usually very full regardless. The interior is a bit small, and the decor is very plain, mediocre at best. The crowd is usually middle aged or older, so it's not a typical haunt for young people, based upon my experience. However, the service is friendly and prompt. My friend and I were regularly complimented and offered samples of the beer selections on tap. I was fairly impressed with the variety of craft beers offered, and the price of one served in a frosted mug was very reasonable! It has a family feel to the place, and I would return just for the service and beer selection. read more
