El Agave Bar - Tequila bar

El Agave Bar

Just a quick update to my review to congratulate the place for getting some nice local press…read moreattention: http://www.tampabay.com/restaurants/bar-review-el-agave-gives-tequila-a-well-deserved-star-turn-20190801/ El Agave Bar is a fantastic addition to St Pete Beach that definitely sets itself apart from the completely uninspired Bud Light or Fireball shots dive bars it's surrounded by. If you're looking for a (mostly) tequila-based craft cocktail, or a break from the norm in walking distance from numerous hotels and beach bars, this is definitely the place to go. They're related to the excellent Agave restaurant two doors down in the same building, so certain Agave food items are available here. In any case, I stopped in for some drinks recently and loved everything. I started with their Oaxaca Old Fashioned, which is an orange-tasting mix of tequila, mezcal and bitters. Moved on to The Don; a great margarita. Finally, feeling the need to step it up, I asked for a recommendation on a reasonably priced smooth tequila to sip; the recommended Padre Azul anejo was exactly what I was looking for. The interior has more of a lounge vibe than a bar; lots of group seating areas, a pool table, chess, etc. Now, my six months later update to my original review; I've since ventured into the world of mezcal, and love coming here to find random new mezcals they get in. Mezcal is also produced from the agave plant, but unlike tequila, generally can't be produced in anywhere near the volume, so you aren't going to find it receiving the same attention tequila does, since no distiller could generate enough to keep up with the demand an advertising campaign would bring. I've found I really enjoy a smoky mezcal, straight up or even for an upgraded margarita, and many of the mezcals they serve here can also be purchased in bottle form at the liquor store next door (a family member of the owner owns that store).

This is a 2 star at best. Bad parking to start with. Few tables and a tourist trap restaurant…read more Over priced for below average food. Staff was just ok nothing special. I would rank it with taco bell food quality for 3 times the money.

A typical setup with thatched roof bar, lots of tikis and overall fun atmosphere. We were able to pick from their standard menu as well as their brunch menu, and we picked from the latter. We ordered drinks: a captain and diet for hubby, and a quarantini for me which was light and tasty. We shared an appetizer sized ahi tuna, perfectly prepared and served with seaweed salad. Delicious! Our entree was a tasty crab cake served on a pretzel bun and served with tater tots ( our choice), and according to Tom " it was the bomb", as the "combined taste was so good". Our server was just okay; not overly friendly and a bit annoyed when I asked if they served mojitos ( evidently not, had I looked at the menu...) Prices were a bit lower than I'd expect near the beach in St. Pete.

They were really busy with 2 bartenders on Saturday night. They were average on getting drinks out. On a good note they had great live rock music!! Falcon Band rocks!!

Two bars - one in the back by the elevator and one on the other side that faces the beach. There is a ledge type area that allows for more people to stand to look at the beach/sunset. We were told it's best to order your drink/food at the bar and then go sit down to have it brought out to you. Food menu is limited and pricey. We got a crab cake and samba waves (cowboy caviar type dip with wantons). The food was excellent, fresh and good portion size. Drink wise, we were on our babymoon, so I got a mocktail and it was delicious! Bartender made me a raspberry mojito mocktail. The views of the sunset are beautiful considering how high up you are. After the sunset most people got out of there and it was quiet.

Wow. I expected more from a place rated 4 stars. To be…read morespecific we went to the beach bar because the restaurant wasn't open yet. The very first issue was parking. Parking is minimum $50 a day + fees. A cocktail? For an hour? Haha no. I'm being mildly disingenuous. The bar staff (and likely restaurant staff) will give you a QR code to validate all $58 of your parking. But it made me acutely miss a time when you could just park and patronize an establishment. Just don't forget to validate your parking, cuz they sure didn't ask preemptively. They were celebrating a 3-day grand reopening when we went on Saturday. There was *one* artisan in their market space. The music was pumping loud enough to not be able to converse. Although it drew a crowd of younger folks, there was not much to behold from the "grand" reopening. Not even s cost of paint. The beach bar may not have been part of the sprucing up idk, I didn't see anything worth celebrating. I meant to look at the size of the cocktail cup that we got (small), but $13-14 for a cocktail is highway robbery for the end result. And $18 for 6 wings ($3 a wing) was a little disappointing. I expected better of a Hilton adjoined restaurant. No one part was terrible. It was just the way they matched up - loud, expensive, small portions. If you're loud maybe you're cheap and tasty. If you're expensive, maybe you're fast and delicious. This was all the worst parts of a bar that doesn't care about its patrons' economics. A bar that wants to serve tourists with mediocrity and move on to the next crop of people who will never be there again. If you're a tourist it'll probably be fine, if overpriced. If you're a local, don't bother. To be fair, we should ask if there was anything good. hm ... no. We won't be returning. 3 stars is probably generous.

The workers knew exactly what they were doing and even in busy time of the market they were quick to buss tables, get ordered items to customers fast and the bathroom was pristinely clean. The bumping A/C provided instant relief as we claimed the stools by the bar. My friends and I quickly agreed, this place is an absolute gem. So gorgeously decorated and the drinks, the mocktails, the pastry items, the food were beautiful and delicious. It really appeared they did everything well here. We FINALLY tried Pulpo Kitchen & Lounge and WOW, was it good! We wanted an early dinner so we made…read morereservations for 5:15pm on a Friday - it was lovely and quiet at that time, but it got busier as we were leaving. It seems an ideal place to go with friends and order a variety of dishes to sample and share. We began with their signature Peruvian Ceviche with coconut and kafir lime (the non-spicy version for me - there is also an ají amarillo version you can get with a bit of a kick to it) and the Smoked Mussels Toast. The ceviche was served in a deceivingly small bowl that contained a generous amount of fish and it came with crispy plantain chips. The mussels toast is a dish I NEVER would have ordered myself, but I let my husband pick and it turned out to be my favorite surprise of the meal. Served on crispy toast points with salsa macha aioli and a green pepper adobo that worked beautifully together. I could not rave enough about this dish! (Just try it! You'll thank me!) Our next 2 small plates were the Pulpo a la Gallega and the Lollipop Lamb Chops - both incredible. The octopus had a lovely char, but was very tender. It was served with crispy and slightly spicy papas bravas. The lamb chops were served on a bed of pistachio butter - and yeah, it was AS amazing as it sounds. My only complaint is I wanted about 6 more lamb chops...I kid, I kid. But seriously, we will probably order 2 plates of these next time. Deliciously tender and again, had a lovely chargrilled taste to it. At this point, we were too full for any more savory small plates, but, there was just enough room for dessert! We tried the Guava Sorbet, topped with a rum and cream cheese fondant icing and pomegranate seeds. This was light, refreshing, surprising, and I would 100% recommend it to cap off a good meal if you want something a little sweet that isn't too heavy. We also ordered the Mini Churros, which were a little more indulgent, filled with a light custard cream, topped with a sweet and salty plantain and graham cracker crumble, and served with a dark bittersweet chocolate sauce and a tart passion fruit sauce. I don't typically love sauce with my churros, but both of these were so good we practically drank them like shots! For our first experience at Pulpo, it was fantastic! Looking forward to a return visit to try even more of their dishes and cocktails.

Service is good, although they did forget to bring my wife's sangria-Rita, but once we said something, it was delivered very quickly. Paella was very good, with nicely cooked rice. Gambas were wonderful. The ceviche tasted like tom kha soup, and not a lot of seafood compared to veggies and stuff, but still tasty. Ropa Vieja was spot on, the plantains were solid as well. The meat on a stick was definitely a hit, and we enjoyed the dipping sauces that came with it. The tuna tartare was really tasty as well. A suggestion was two dishes per person, and that is too much food when you add in paella. Dessert was good, but probably not worth $15. We spent $250 (after tip) for four of us with only 2 drinks, so it does get expensive. With that being said, we will be back and ready to try some new dishes.
