Traveling with family and trying to find a place that everyone wants to stop at can be tricky at times. Cool Basil offers Asian fusion with dishes inspired by Japanese, Chinese, and Thai cuisine. So sushi, curries, and fried rice dishes. Great, everyone is happy. This place is in a strip mall but offers plenty of seating. There is a sushi station in the middle with seating all around the counter forming a U - shape. The kids liked sitting at the station and watching their sushi being rolled and made. We also tried their fried rice and some Thai noodle dishes like Pad Thai and Pad See Ew. All the dishes were fresh, tasty and satisfying. The sushi fish was very fresh and of good quality. Portion vs. price was very accommodating, we even took some of the noodle dishes home for another meal. My family also liked the addition of Thai fortune cookies, another interesting variation from traditional strip mall Asian restaurants.

This is always a 3.5 for me. It is good and great when we are in this area. Husband enjoys yellow curry with 6 SPCA's. I did not think it was bit. Had the cool basil roll and added tuna. While small, I liked it. Chicken egg rolls are good but I have had better.

This was my first time at the Altoona location. I believe they have the same menu as Clive, but the restaurant has a way more casual vibe being in the strip mall and is smaller in size. Our server was attentive and helpful today. I had the Honey chicken and it had good flavor and the chicken had perfect texture. I always recommend adding some spice to the dish as well. Reasonably priced.

I visited this location because I love Cool Basil in the Clive area. There was a sign on the door of this Altoona location saying the name is now Thai Basil but that the owners were the same. Our server was awesome. She greeted us as we arrived and was attentive and really good at her job. The small tom yum seafood soup was stuffed with seafood and tasted great...although my small soup cup looked like the exact same size as the medium soup cup my boyfriend got. That was weird. The basil chicken dish we got had very chewy meat...and some pieces looked and tasted like they may of been something other than chicken. Tough and almost like pork? The cucumber salad was fresh, but the ice tea was tasteless. Almost like water. But the memory I am left with is the splattered sauces and food all over the walls and the gunk all over the spouts of the soy sauces on our table and our menus were sticky on parts. If this place did a good cleaning we may try again.

This restaurant is under new owners! For years I would get food at Cool Basil Altoona under the previous owners and the food was OK but they never got the spice right. This time we ordered - I got 4 Papaya Salad, 5 Larb and my goodness, delicious! There were fresh chilies like you would expect for these dishes. The shrimp in a blanket was a pleasant addition! My husband got the Pad See Ew and normally when we get take out, the noodle dishes are very dry (even from the best places). The noodles were not dry at all, had the perfect amount of heat, and were overall delicious. If you're in the area I definitely recommend giving Cool Basil another shot if you've been disappointed in the past!

    Drunken Noodle (Carry Out)

This is by far my favorite Thai food in central Iowa. The drunken noodle (with chicken, level 2 spice) is incredible. Excellent combination of noodles, chicken, and veggies. Noticeably more sauce than their competition, consistently too. I have only ever ordered carry out, and it is always ready in 10-15 minutes. Service is always top-notch and fast. Strongly recommend Cool Basil (Altoona).

    Drunken noodles

Stopped in on a Saturday for an early dinner. Service was kind and attentive. Food was great- had the Tom Ka Kai and drunken noodles, both with chicken. The soup was amazing! The noodles were good. Definitely worth another visit.

Went for an early lunch and were the first people In for the day. Serve was prompt and very helpful. Kept our drinks filled and checked in on us often. Food arrived and was great temperature and flavor. Everyone in our party enjoyed their meals. We will definitely go back soon.

The food was OK at best. The crab Rangoon were overcooked. There was little to no customer service.

Food is great as is service. However, chicken or beef in all of the dishes is dry. Suggest they cook it fresh, if they don't already.

We came in around the end of their lunch special so it was a little busy. Goes to show they're pretty popular and get a lot of regulars! The ambiance is pretty open and had a lot more room than I expected! I ordered the pad Thai with beef, which is one of their lunch specials. I asked for level 2 spice but I didn't notice anything when I ate it. I did hear it kinda varies depending on the staff so maybe I need to order a higher level. Otherwise the food was pretty good and a great spot for lunch!

I used to go to that restaurant once a week. That restaurant is the mother ship.. I would rotate between Cafe Fusion and Thai Flavors. Liam has become quite a entrepreneur of Thai restaurants he is the major owner of Cool Basil Banana leaf, and Thai Flavors on Ingersoll. He is really worked hard to have very large restaurants that serve delicious Thai food. It's conveniently located along East 14th in a strip mall with limited parking It can be a busy place so depending on the time of day lunch or dinner you may have to walk a little from your parking spot to the restaurant. The restaurant is clean and.older but the food is still great It is similar menu items to his other restaurants. On this particular day I had red curry chicken, I.have had it at all his restaurants and it's consistently good. I always like to support a locally owned business. Liam has developed quite a system and serving large amount of people at all his restaurants although the East 14th restaurants still has that old mom and pop kind of feel. When he first opened this first restaurant there were not that many Thai restaurants around town. Now he's open many himself and there are other many quality Thai food restaurants around town I think all of his restaurants have some healthier menu including fresh vegetable dishes. I believe they all have vegan dishes as well. Of course the restaurant has pot stickers basil stir fry, pad thai, and other traditional Thai restaurant dishes. There is lots of variety in the menu. It's also about expectations, everyone is under staffed, so I always appreciate the service staff who are working. Having said that the service was fast and efficient . It's also about being realistic about the food. The food was served quick and hot. I would definitely check this place out. If you're in the area it's well worth a visit It was fun to visit an old neighborhood friend

Ordered Tom Ka as medium heat, and was way low on spicy. Ordered green curry as medium heat, WAY too much spicy. Couldn't even eat it. The food overall is edible but average. The service on the other hand was absolutely non-existent. The front is run by, what we guessed it the cook/owner's teenage son. He said literally three words to us during our entire time there. He couldn't be bothered to look up from his phone. We had to go up to the desk to get anything and everything we needed. It was really bad. I gave a point for his dad busting his ass in the back and basically running the entire place by himself.

It was good, but also nothing that knocked my socks off just average. It was a pho with lots of different seafood in it such as crab, shrimp, and calamari. The broth was really good. Also it was a very quiet restaurant with no music playing so the atmosphere was not lively. The service was really good. Total 3.5/5 Team member 2: An absolute delight. When life gives you a lemon, squeeze it onto your Thai food and eat it. 4.4/5 Team member 3: Quite simply, my experience at lemon grass was very, very lovely. The food (i got the pineapple fried rice and had some of my wife's pad thai) was phenomenal. The service was superb. The ambiance was a bit somber but very quiet and peaceful. Plus the prices were very reasonable! Overall, i would highly recommend this place for anyone searching for great food in Adel...... 4.7/5.0 Team member 4: I really enjoyed my experience at Lemon Grass! The food was delicious and very flavorful. The atmosphere was perfect for a meal with family, a chill meal, or generally good conversation, not the most fun atmosphere, but still very nice. I would definitely go back and recommend to others... 4.1/5.0 Team Member 5: I have mixed feelings about my experience at Lemon Grass. My first disclaimer, is that I am pregnant & finding myself very picky with food at this time! That being said, I was disappointed with the Pad Thai, which had a different flavor than I am used to, and too much sauce in my opinion. It was hard for me to stomach, so I ate my husband's pineapple fried rice, which was, on the other hand, very wonderful. Contrary to what some of my teammates have said, I loved the quiet environment. When I walked in, I was comforted by the lack of music and the three tables filled with other customers, in silent contentment with their meals. Overall: 3.9/5.0
