Both of my air conditioning units were not cooling. I called Cool Air Tech to check the problem. The owner, Bill, came on March 20 and inspected my A/C units, including measuring the coolant pressure. I mentioned that the units might simply need additional refrigerant. After his inspection, he told me that both HVAC systems should be replaced. I explained that one of the compressors had been replaced five years ago and was still running well since last year. However, he said both units were completely out of refrigerant. Since they are older models that use R-22 Freon, he estimated it would cost at least $4,000 to refill them, with a high risk of leaks causing the refrigerant to run out again. He strongly recommended replacing both HVAC systems at a cost of around $25,000. I told him I did not have the funds and needed time to think about it. He initially charged a $160 inspection fee, but after some discussion, I paid him $120 in cash. Later that day, a friend recommended another A/C technician, H. Lee, who came to inspect the units. He found that one unit still had about 75% of its refrigerant, while the other had around 30%. In the end, I only paid to add 5.5 lbs of refrigerant. He also added EasySeal sealant to both units to help prevent leaks. Both A/C units have now been running well for over a week. Instead of replacing both systems for around $24,000, I saved approximately $21,000! Homeowners, beware: Do not rely on just one repair technician's opinion. Full disclosure, I first found and used this wonderful AC/Heating Company when this company was highly recommended to us and had A+ Awarded , with the HIGHEST Awards on "Angie's List". At that time we had some past issues with our indoor central air heater (also used this company for yearly winter safety inspections) , this time today our outdoor AC unit was on the blink (slow R22 leak, and valve repairs, and if you have an old R22 Freon gas unit, you know or quickly find out how very, very expensive R22 Freon gas is and hard to come by. I called their office, we got a prompt appointment and gave us a time frame, and they came out right on time. . Bill McIntosh, The Owner came with a Great Co-Worker, and determine what was wrong, had the needed R22 Freon AC replacement gas & fixed my slow leak and damage valve, without any sales pressure in buying a new AC from him. Bill told us, that luckily the repair & R22 should last a few more years, then call him for a new replacement as he very good deals on AC and Heater new replacements. Bill is my go-to technician for HVAC repair. He was referred to me in 2014 by a VERY picky friend-the best kind of recommendation. I was converting my residence to a rental and my then-34 year old A/C system was leaking coolant. Bill suggested a fix that was about 1/10 the cost of a new system. He said he wasn't sure if it would work; if it didn't, I would have to invest in a new system, and the price of the fix would be deducted. Since I was doing an entire rehab, saving the cost of a new system was very appealing. The fix worked. Recently, there was an issue with the thermostat, and Bill promptly replaced it. By the way, the 2014 fix to the A/C unit still works. Of course, I still need a new system. I'm looking to change it out this summer and Bill will be the one replacing it. He's honest, explains things well and discusses alternatives. It's important to have service people on my team that I can trust and have confidence in. Bill first came out to our home when we bought it over two years ago to inspect our furnace from 1967. After a cleaning and inspection, he told us it was good to go for at least another year...he was right! He could have easily sold us a whole new system, but instead gave us good advice and customer service. One year later when it was time to fire up the furnace again it was acting funny.
