About 2 months ago, i went to a restaurant where I encountered a very painful and distressful experience where I felt bullied. They took my phone to "repair" but until now, countless tries of contact them and i still haven't gotten my phone back. This is what happened. I was at Cookhouse Joe, SOHO brunch, on Monday (28 July) for dinner with my friend. It all went well until a waitress dropped a knife on my mobile phone and leg. The screen on my mobile phone cracked as a result the phone is not usable anymore, but fortunately for me, my leg was alright. The waitress immediately apologised and said that she will pay for the damages. I'm using a mobile phone that do not have an office in London and therefore no service centre. But after that, the manager told us that the restaurant will be responsible, however they could not offer any form of compensation as it was too late at night (9.05pm) because they could not get in touch with the boss. We then told the manager that the waitress offered to pay and there was no need to contact the boss. When we spoke to the waitress again, she said she will only pay for repairs but as I was using a Xiaomi phone, I told her that they didn't have a service centre in London and I need a phone as I didn't want to be uncontactable. She then asked us to give her a minute. We told them that I need a phone immediately or at least the next day as I am here alone and my family contacts me everyday to make sure I'm okay. So we suggested that they got me a spare phone or a new phone. Next thing we knew the manager came to us and shouted that "I already told you to come back tomorrow, and now you are making my waitress cry" and started chasing us out of the restaurant. While chasing us out, he sure didn't forget about the bill and demanded that we pay for the dinner before we leave. We called in the police but they mentioned that as this is a civil dispute, they could not get involved. We also contacted the embassy for advice but they referred us to the police, so we are back at square one. We went back the next day to get things settled during the time stated by the manager, as he said the boss will be around during that time. When we were there, all he told us was "the boss doesn't sit around" waiting for us to come. He also started calling us names like stupid and said that we were trying to blackmail / threaten them. I have never felt more threatened by a person! Not only was my phone damaged and unusable, my friend and I were bullied and insulted. I have a recording of him calling my friends and I stupid, at least twice because my friends posted a bad review online. He said that, "We can't be going into a restaurant and just expect cash like that." He also chased me out and said that I was trespassing his restaurant and that I wasn't to step foot in the restaurant ever again. He took my mobile phone and mentioned that because we didn't pay for our bill of 30GBP, they can only try to repair my 150GBP phone and won't guarantee until we paid. The whole experience has been seriously distressing and traumatising. read more

My male colleagues at work kept going on about this place that the wraps are "really really good" and also "Serena, you would love it!". Somehow I failed to believe them because they had recommended some places before and it fell short of my great expectation. Nevertheless, I did decide to try it. That week, I was craving Arabic cuisine but didn't want to go that extra mile. So, I took their advise. It is a cozy restaurant in a one way road, off Oxford street almost opposite "The Plaza". It is quite dim inside, with tables at the back and benches at the entrance. I ordered the lamb wrap and it was amazing. It was the closest I could get to authentic Lebanese food, the garlic sauce hit the spot. Memories of home kept flooding my head. Every table is treated to a bottle of something which at first, I thought was a bottle of wine! To my disappointment, it was just water... Good, keep customers hydrated! Pros: -Good for small groups -Quirky -Great food and lots of it! -Close to the high street -'Green man' pub just opposite Cons: -Slightly pricier meals on the menu but it's London. -There's not enough space in my belly to finish the food. -Can get very busy and packed. On my way from the office to the hotel I was staying at I walk pass this little place, the sign said Lebanese Streetfood and I just couldn't walk away. First time i went there i ordered the quarter chicken with fattoush and the garlic sauce. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Talk about getting alot of food for a little amount of money. The chicken was amazing, the garlic was made in the perfect way and the fattoush was crispy and fresh. I went back there again with some friends and we took the tasting menu, which meant ALOT of food for even less the money! So worth it. Go there now! read more

Good value, well-cooked chicken - but a bit bland. I was very excited to order a whole chicken to share with a friend at Cookhouse Joe. We threw in some halloumi and chips to top things off. The halloumi in particular was great, though to be fair you can't really go wrong - but the important things was that it was generous slabs of the stuff. The chicken was moist and cooked well, but not very interesting. Thinking about it, I'm surprised at the lack of choice in this area - would it be so hard (or so uncool) to offer some more flavoured rotisserie chickens, whether in the traditional garlic-and-lemon or BBQ vein, or something more exciting? The trouble is, I suppose, that I am capable of making a tasty roast chicken - and I'm not bragging here, it's just something that is relatively easy to do. Therefore at a restaurant, I want a bit more to set it apart - otherwise it's just eating somewhere that isn't your house. Meanwhile, nothing else was standout. Can't really remember the service so I'm guessing it was discreet and no nonsense. I quite liked the feel of the place but it didn't wow me. read more

Cookhouse Joe is one of my favourite restaurants in London; I came across it about 6 months ago when walking past it on Berwick St with a friend. We made not that we wanted to go and try it out, a week later we did. The restaurant is split over two floors, the downstairs is cramped but it isn't a negative. The staff are friendly and everyone is so happy to be stuffing their faces with chicken that it just kind of feels like a massive family meal out. The interior is the classic new-old design of exposed brickwork and eclectic furniture making it warm and inviting. The large stage lighting throws flashes of light on the walls around, seemingly paying homage to the theatrics of Soho's clientele. I now go to Cookhouse Joe anywhere up to weekly. This is how good this place is. The first thing that strikes you when you sit down is how reasonable the food prices are. We went during lunch the first time and you can get a chicken wrap and chips for £5. FIVE ENGLISH - IN LONDON - IN CENTRAL LONDON! Unheard of. In the evening the menu changes with the wraps no longer available, and instead there is a heart range of chicken dishes, burgers and veggie options. I've pretty much had everything now. My favourites are the classic and lamb Kofta burgers, the signature half chicken and a side of halloumi. Burgers will set you back £8 while chicken ranges from £5-13. The halloumi side seemed pricey at £5, and then a huge board of 4 massive chunks came out with flatbread. OK, not so pricey. The drinks offering is pretty standard, but they do have some great happy hours with a large jug of Pimms going down a treat for £10 (usually £15) and prosecco Wednesdays where a bottle will only cost £10. There's a regular happy hour 2-4-1 cocktails too! If you're in town and looking for a quick bite, or you're after somewhere to set the night of right before going out, then Cookhouse Joe is the place for you. I can't recommend it enough. Since first visiting I have been championing it hard on social to the point where I bumped into a friend there who was in the middle of taking his friend to Cookhouse Joe and had been telling him about how much I loved it and had introduced him to it. read more

Nice chicken, but a bit style over substance for me. Went here on a Monday night at about 7.30 and it was pretty busy. We hovered by the door for a bit before being dealt with and while I usually wouldn't mind that, there really isn't space for it here and I was half in half out of some rubber ribbons (unsuccessfully trying to keep the cold out). Once the group in front of us were seated, we sat at the bar which was better and then they took us upstairs to eat (definitely the better choice as it was way less crowded). Unfortunately even though there were only two groups upstairs and plenty of space they sat us right on top of each other, really annoying. The service was good, fast and friendly enough. The chicken is tasty but they use the classic trick of not including sides in the price, which ratchets up your bill rapidly. Everything was delicious although the fries is a small portion compared to a whole chicken. It's a nice environment to eat in with soft lighting, good music at an appropriate volume and mismatched furniture but too crowded downstairs but the price of the sides just knocks it down to 3 stars for me. read more

Nandos, who? Joe's is a recent discovery of mine which may have just converted me from the Nando's fan that I am. It's a very simple menu set up, rotisserie chicken with your choice of sauces - you can choose from a full portion, half or quarter with fries and incredible homemade coleslaw on the side, along with corn on the cob - my favourite being the garlic chilli chicken. The service is quick and the small but cool space has a buzzy, fun atmosphere to it. A great place to come along with a bunch of friends, share a few beers and enjoy simple but incredibly well done food. read more

Stumbled over this place while dodging the rain during a Christmas shopping excursion last Saturday around 2pm. McD's just around the corner on Oxford Street, but people going there are missing something much much better for not that much more in cost. Decided against the half rotisserie chicken (£6) and went for the lamb kofta wrap - tasty tasty tasty. Served in a galvanised steel roasting dish with a similar styled bowl of fries - all food wrapped wrapped in grease proof paper. Quirky style, but well worth unwrapping the food. Busy little place, mainly 25-35 crowd (apart from myself :-) ), but try it. What have you got to lose at £6-8 ? read more

This a great little place just off Soho Sq, particularly for lunch. 1/2 a roast chicken with chips or salad and with with either coleslaw or corn on the cob all for under £10 is great value. Service is pretty good and the décor interesting, would suggest sitting upstairs in the winter months as it gets quite busy with people coming in and out often and there's a bit of a draft when the door opens/closes. I've always been a big chicken fan (Nandos is one of my favourite cheap eats). When I stumbled across this little eatery in Soho I thought why not give it a try. This is a rotisserie restaurant, so I ordered the chicken, naturally. I also ordered a side salad whose name I can't remember. We also ordered chicken wings and halloumi to start. The chicken wings were some of the best I've ever had, succulent, tender, dare I say better than Nandos. The halloumi was cooked perfectly. I was beginning to wonder why i hadn't been here before! The main of chicken and salad was equally delicious. Rotisserie chicken can be dry but this one was really juicy. As the sister restaurant of Soho Joe it's another hidden gem, where quality and price are on full show. Well worth a visit. read more

At present, simply, the best chicken place in Soho, end-of-story. Fantastically tasty rotisserie chicken - as well as other options such as wraps and burgers - at extremely reasonable prices. I have been here a few times and absolutely love this place. It is an Lebanese restaurant but the rotisserie chicken is delicious. Everyone I have bought here have absolutely loved it. The service was great and the staff are very efficient. The meat was gorgeous as it just so tender and tasty. If you like Nandos, come here and check it out and you will prefer it. read more

This is like a turbocharged Nandos and roughly the same price. 5-star chicken and chips. It's location means it's a little too exposed to the outside world to feel fully relaxed, and our cocktails weren't very cold, but the value-for-money more than made up for that. read more

Awesome, quant little place. The chicken was so tender and juicy, probably the best I have ever had. All the sides were amazing - my mouth is still drooling 2 months later. And the PIMS! I've never heard of it before but saw another table drinking it and had to order it! So glad I was introduced to it. Soho has a reputation for supplying a diverse range of food as long as you pay up that $$. Luckily for us less fortunate who find ourselves in Soho with a slim wallet, there's Cookhouse Joe's. I don't think I've ever walked away from here hungry or completely broke. I recommend coming with a larger party (4-6) as the value gets even better as you add people because the sides are so large. The rotisserie chicken here beats Nandos and Chicken Shop by far, though Clutch Chicken is a challenger (if different style of chicken). While it's not as good as my personal favorite, Costco, it's in Central London and doesn't require a membership card. Make sure to make a reservation or expect to wait, luckily there's a pub across the road for you too kill some time and get some beer! Cocktails are good too! read more
