I ordered a burger with onion rings and hush puppies and they really only put 4 rings in the box and the hush puppies were not fresh. ( this location on Franklin st is take out /drive thru only ) and my kids chicken nugget tray with fries and cheese bites looks like it was shaken up. I'm so disappointed. So, I go in, look at the menu and order. I got a tray with hush puppies cause I've never had them, onion rings cause those looked good in the videos I've seen, and BBQ char grilled chicken. Also caved and ordered a shake with it. So let's start with the food. First off, NOWHERE on the menu does it say that the chicken is a sandwich. I opened the box and there was something wrapped in tin foil and when I opened it, it was a chicken sandwich with some kind of sauce and pickles. I HATE pickles. So GROSS!!! It also looked like the sauce was a mix of bbq and Mayo. Gross!! And let's talk about the size of the chicken.....the bun was one of those small burger buns you get from the store and the chicken was SMALLER than the damn bun!!!! It didn't even stick out!!! Like WTF?????? If I'm gonna pay for food I expect to get food. I sat there for a few minutes just looking at it cause I felt like I had been scammed and finally I go back up to the counter. I asked the guy if this is a normal sized piece of chicken and he tells me it depends which piece you get. What the actual heck???? I also told him that NOWHERE on the menu does it say it's a sandwich and he says "You thought it was a piece of chicken?". Yes, I did think that. He then went and had them make me another piece of chicken (same small size as the first) so that I had a little more. Tho there was BBQ sauce on it, this chicken had zero flavor. I never had a hush puppy before and it was kinda bleh. Fried crap if you ask me. And the onion rings tasted kinda mushy so definitely NOT good. The ONLY good thing was the shake. I got the chocolate Oreo peanut butter flavor and that was definitely worth the extra money. Would happily pay for another shake but 100% feel like I wasted money on the food. After having observed the long lines at their drive through, reading they are opened until 4:00AM, and asking around: What do you think about Cook Out, and getting a smile and positive reaction, I had to go visit one evening for dinner and experience for myself a dining experience there. Housed in a large brick building near Crossroads in Roanoke, Virginia, the front of the building faces Hershberger Rd and has large windows and an outdoor seating area to use in good weather. On the back side of the building the drive through is located and a large parking lot. The entrance to the restaurant is on its side under a bright red and white sign high above. As I entered the place was very clean and two low walls guided you to the ordering counter. Above the counter is the menu and customers stood there reading the menu and picking their order. When it was my turn to order, the friendly order taker answered some questions I had and I ordered a Burger tray with Onion Rings and Slaw, a Peach Cobler Shake, and an extra Cook Out Hot Dog. The order was efficiently taken and charged and then I moved in front of a window on the side to wait to be called to receive my order. After having my order, I picked a table and went to sit down. Even though the size of the burger was not too big, the bun was fresh and soft, and the beef patty was also very fresh. Later I found out that they make their own meat patties from fresh ground beef daily and distribute them to the restaurant. They are never frozen. The quality of the food and reasonably low price seem to be the key to attracting loyal customers. Watching the happy customers coming in as I was eating, made me think back of my childhood, and how much I would enjoy eating an inexpensive hot dog or hamburger at a cook out. It doesn't take an expensive restaurant or food to have an amazing dining experience. The four onion rings served were also were enough, considering the price. The Peach Cobler was very good but too thick to drink with a straw. I got a spoon and ate it like an ice cream with the spoon. At the end, I enjoyed my dinner, was relatively full, and spent very little money having quality food. And I discovered the secret to all the happy return customers that keep frequenting this restaurant. So for all of the above reasons, I recommend this place. We typically go here late at night because the food is usually pretty good and it's very affordable. That being said, the service, is horrible. Maybe it's because when I see the long lines it reminds me a little of In-N-Out on the West Coast so when I get up to the menu to order or up to the window to pay I expect the workers to at least be pleasant, but they're not. Not even remotely. They're rude and act like you're bothering them. Then when they hand you the food they practically throw it at you. I would normally give this place much higher ratings, but when they act like they couldn't care less about you as a customer, it makes it hard to promote and even harder to return. read more

My Wife was not feeling well and wanted a shake. I went inside and ordered at the counter. I was a little hungry so i decided to get a BBQ plate with pulled pork. The serving size of the pork was rather small. That was ok I wasn't that hungry. The pork was seasoned on top with what i thought to be BBQ sauce. But it wasn't. It was pure HOT sauce. Sometimes I don't mind a little heat but this was not edible. The three African American women who served me were watching me try to eat it but all I could taste HEAT. As I rose to go up to the counter, I could hear one of them say "Here he comes". All three turned their backs on me. I politely said "excuse me". and was ignored. After the THIRD "excuse me", I raised my voice and without turning around one of the girls told the Manager that she needed to "talk to me". I told the manager that the food was way too hot and spicy to eat. The manager offered to remake the meal without the hot sauce. The three girls could be heard giggling. I told the manager never mind, because I feared the girls would do something else to my food. I left the food on the counter and went to leave. The manager offered me a refund, but by this time I was so pissed off that I just left. If this had been three white girls doing this to an older black men, They surely would have been arrested. This is my first time at this location. This is the best Cook Out that I have been to. I had a regular cheeseburger meal with everything no lettuce, canjun fries, onion rings, and a strawberry milkshake. Everything was hot and fresh. The cheeseburger was a nice size and cooked just like I liked and it was really good. The cajun fries were good. The season needs just a little more heat. The onion rings were good, but you only get 4. The strawberry milkshake was really good, they make some of the best milkshakes, period. The customer service was great. I eat here a lot with my coworkers during lunch hour and even if it's busy, our food is up in just a minute or two. The shakes are always dense and delicious. The burgers and sides taste consistently good and it's always clean. The only issue i could find is the chairs they have in dining area screech something terrible when they slide on the floor. If they could put some felt pads under the legs or rubber stops, that would be a big help. Its just so loud and echoes through the space. But food and service is excellent. read more

We stopped at the drive through while traveling on I-81. Cook Out is great no matter where you go! The burgers are flavorful because they are grilled and you can add lettuce, tomato, and onion for no extra charge. My favs are the BBQ sandwich which come with hot sauce and slaw on it. Great southern feeling! The hush puppies are also great! My usual order is the combo box with either a burger or BBQ sandwich with a side of onion rings and a corndog. Then I get a side order of hush puppies! As for drinks, they have the best sweet tea ever! BUT... the drumroll comes with the selection of over 40 kinds of shakes. I have had quite a few flavors but my go to is the peanut butter/banana shake. You can add a shake to your meal for around $1 more... totally worth it! The only thing I didn't care for at this location was that the drive through was not covered either at the ordering box or the window. Our first visit to Cookout did not disappoint. The Value for the food is excellent. We each got the big double Tray. I had it with the Bacon Cheese add on (Bacon, Grilled Onions and Cheese) and my husband had the Cookout style with (Grilled Onion, Slaw, Chili and Mustard). We both enjoyed the burgers though I would not order it that way again. My Bacon was a little under done and the Cheese was liquid Nacho and I am not a fan of that kind of cheese. My husband really liked the chili and both Burgers had plenty of the onions. The burgers also had a smokey flavor. I noticed mine seemed a little salty. The sides were all tasty. We had fries, onion rings, hush puppies and the "steak" quesadilla. All were good. The quesadilla appeared to be chopped burger but was still good though my daughter decided it was too spicy for her, I did not taste spicy really. We did not have a shake this visit but will likely try one in the future as my husband is eager to try a fhot dog with Chili. The line moved quickly and the food was prepared fast and was hot. The food here is horrible but the shakes are mah-ve-lush...Seriously -- get food at McD's next door, or Taco Bell or Wendy's across the street, or Sonic around the corner, and just come here for the shakes. All those places have better food, but none of them have those shakes. Those wonderful, amazing shakes in every flavor under the sun. I have tried the food enough to know I'll not eat here again. Granted, I have not had the chicken strips but I have had the BBQ (vinegar based, small, not fulfilling and kind of bland), the Quesadillas (the chicken far better than the beef, but don't misunderstand me, not good) and the hamburgers. I have NO idea what they make these hamburgers out of. They are gristly, grainy, tasteless and have a weird mouthfeel. They are to be avoided. Fries, onion rings, hushpuppies all ok. The Corndog is the best thing on the menu. Really, they can do that weirdly. BLT is just that but on a hamburger bun and so, kinda weird. BUT the shakes. Great day. Fantastic. I've been working through the list (which is fun) and by far the best one is the Banana Berry. I've also had the Peanut Butter Fudge (yum!), vanilla, heath bar, M&M, mint chocolate chip -- the ones with "things" in them are too thick to drink with a straw, so if you are driving get one that is blended. After eating here a few times, I've concluded that I'd rather be at its biggest competition, Steak'N'Shake, which is about half a block away. Cook Out's burgers are pretty ordinary, whereas S&S has a bigger variety and better burgers. Both these restaurants have excellent shakes, but it you're dining in, how much nicer to receive this cold creamy confection in a huge old-fashioned milkshake glass (S&S) than in a styrofoam cup (Cook Out). That being said, it's probably unfair to compare "siblings", since in order to keep costs down, Cook Out, which is VERY reasonably priced, has to avoid the perks its rival offers. The burgers here are nothing great, the onion rings and hush puppies are just okay. I did enjoy the pulled pork barbecue sandwich with slaw and Texas Pete sauce, though. The service is fast and efficient (an area where S&S has really fallen on its face until recently), and the prices just can't be beat. However, this cookout consistently has subpar quesadillas compared to literally every other cookout I've been to. It's like a hint of ingredients in a lukewarm quesadilla. You top a crappy burger with toppings and it will still be a crappy burger. However, I do like that I can get a side of chicken tenders to accompany my burger. The chicken tenders were not bad. Not as good as say Hardees or Popeyes but decent for late night food. The best part of the meal was the "fancy shake". If you like your milkshakes super thick, this is your place. It was almost like ice cream. Good luck sucking it through the straw... {insert immature sexual innuendo joke here}. Service not bad. However, I can see this place getting overrun on a Friday or Saturday night. Drive through was 10 cars deep one night I wanted to come here. Bottom line: I would only come here for the shakes. An absolutely sub-par experience. Its like an interpretation of an American restaurant by someone who has never stepped inside one after a far too long telephone game. The menus are too small to read while waiting in line and you're not actually able to see the menus when you're standing in front of the register to order. The food is unsatisfactory, my burger was essentially burnt, not charbroiled as claimed, dry and tasteless. As for the sides I ordered, the onion rings were cold, and the side of chili was not a hearty dish of beef and beans and vegetables and instead a small container of hot dog chili which I could only eat by pouring it on my burger. I did not try one of the milkshakes, so lets hope they at least have one saving grace. They did have Cheerwine on tap at the fountain which I found novel, at the very least. Also the music playing overhead just sucked and the decorations was just a mishmash of Virginia sports teams, which just seems to be another one of those misunderstandings that they must have stuff on the wall but having rival teams' memorabilia right next to each other makes no sense. Very bland, tasteless burgers. I was caught up in the hype when this place opened and waited in line for what amounted to a sub-par Five Guys experience. Yes, the burgers are hand pressed, but there really isn't any "grill" taste to them. The milkshake was a redeeming factor in the whole trip, because any milkshake is a pretty good milkshake. However, it's not really worth it to go back again. Also, if you are concerned about social justice at all, please be aware that the owners of this chain are huge supporters of Rick Santorum and various evangelical groups, complete with cutesy Bible verses on the bags. This place is the burger equivalent of Chick-Fil-A. It is no coincidence that Cook Out is a Southern chain. The burgers are big, greasy and cheap. Those are three things we love in Dixie, and Cook Out delivers on all counts. While the burgers won't make anyone forget Five Guys (or the always "coming soon" Steak 'n' Shake), they aren't dry and crumbly. I got mine steak style, which includes grilled onions and A1 sauce, and it was surprisingly tasty. The onion rings were no more heinous than fast food onion rings generally are, but nothing to write home about. I had a Cheerwine, that NC favorite, that just added to the experience. The burger was better than my experience with the vaunted Burger in the Square (which was dry and crumbly, and a huge disappointment), and I'd be more inclined to go to Cook Out than any of the national chains. Wendy's lost me when they went to those flavorless red onions and weird-tasting pickles. Service was fast, and my order was correct even though the place was pumping on a Saturday afternoon with lines to the door inside and lines around the building at the drive-through. The interior was neat and clean, but let's see how long that lasts. To be fair, I didn't try any of the other menu items, such as the milkshakes that everyone seemed to be ordering or the pulled pork sandwich that gets raves in other reviews of the place. I have a problem with this establishment. I feel like food should NOT be this cheap - 5 bucks gets you quite a lot compared to most places.
