Visiting Harrisonburg, I stopped by Cook Out because I thought it was a BBQ place. I quickly realized it was something completely different, and I am really glad I decided to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised because it felt like eating at my in-laws' home with comforting, homemade-style food that really hit the spot. I was not sure what to order, so I opted for the burger tray that came with two sides and an unsweetened iced tea. Holy smokes, the burger was totally unexpected and absolutely delicious. I also ordered onion rings and cheese bites, and they were crispy, hot, and fresh. I came back again and tried the Walking Taco, which is a bag of Doritos opened up and topped with seasoned taco meat, melted cheese, lettuce, and other taco toppings served right inside the bag. It is a fun twist on tacos and was much better than I expected. Then I came back a third day and had the quesadillas and corn dog. Okay, yes, three days in a row is a little excessive, but the food is really that good. The service is fast, and the restaurant is clean. What impressed me the most was how consistent everything was on each visit, from the quality of the food to the friendly service. But most of all, my belly was full, and this is definitely a place you must visit if you are in the Harrisonburg area. read more

First off, the bathroom was disgusting. Their burgers are okay, but I was only given 1 pickle and no sauces for the "Out West Style". This burger was apart of a tray I ordered and when I asked for a corn dog and hush puppies for sides, I received a corn dog and fries (which I had not ordered). I went back inside to let them know about the mistake, and they took my already served tray, brought it to the back, and they threw away the fries, and gave me 4 hush puppies as a replacement. I ordered an Oreo Mint Shake as the drink for a $1.50 upcharge, and received a plain Vanilla Shake instead. The employees were visibly unpleasant and rude and didn't give me what I ordered. We had never tried Cook Out in Harrisonburg. Stopped by the for lunch on the way home. The service was excellent and we were impressed with the hamburger we ordered as well as the fries. The meal was similar in price to most fast food restaurants but the food was much better. Happy we decided to go for something different for the usual quick meal on the road. Cook Out is my favorite fast-food BBQ chain. They are the only ones in the areas that I frequent which offer a true North Carolina style BBQ sandwich. Not just pulled pork with a vinegar sauce poured over it, but true chopped pork in the sauce with traditional fine-cut coleslaw and a dash of Texas Pete. The best deal here is a BBQ tray that comes with the sandwich (or your choice of other entree like a burger, etc.), two sides, and a drink for a really decent price cheaper than any other fast-food combo meal from the national chains. Food is always fresh and tasty, can't say enough good things about them. Unfortunately this location has more than its fair share of issues. Almost every visit over the last year has resulted in an incorrect order. One time I even got a chicken sandwich instead of the BBQ.... how does that happen!? Also, prior to the pandemic when the dining area was open, the bathrooms always seemed like they hadn't been cleaned for several days. Not a good thing when you are stopping in after several hours on I-81 and are looking for a clean place to relieve yourself. All that said, service has at least been fast and courteous despite the inaccuracies. And they open up early at 1030am which makes it easier to time an early morning stop during a road trip. read more

The only positive thing I have to say is the young man at the drive through was very nice and the fries were good other than that the food was disgusting .. we 2 ordered BBQ platters, it came with fries, hush puppies which were sweet (that was weird), pulled pork ( I think that's what it was, it was nasty, it looked puréed, and had very little sauce on it). I refused to try it. My husband did and said it tasted terrible! We ordered 2 chicken quesadillas and never got them. We ended up eating somewhere else and just taking our finacial loss.. Tried this place while on a weekend trip to James Madison University. The long line at the drive through stirred my curiosity to see how good this place was. The menu had a wide variety of burgers, BBQ plates, and side dishes. Judging from the many people in the place (appeared to be mainly students and locals), this place appeared to be good. Tried the main plate with two sides and my wife had the BBQ plate with two sides. The burger I had was charbroiled on the grill with all the fixings (tomato, lettuce, pickles). Probably the high point of the meal alo g with the sweet tea and cool pellet ice. Sides were not great. Really salty: chili, onion rings. My wife had doubled order of hush puppies and sadly not that great and too salty. Wife had pulled BBQ plate but wasnt informed that the bun was extra (it wasnt offered nor explained). Had to buy it separate - after we got our plate. BBQ was too minced and wasnt great tasting (reminded me of store bought BBQ in the frozen section). Prices were cheap. Can say I tried it and hope that others have had a better food quality experience. I will not be returning and will select one if the many other food places nearby (including Wendy's and McDonald's). read more

Sorry this review is a couple days late. We just arrived in the area we are staying and wanted a quick bite to eat on our way to Massanutten Resort. It was a little wait to get up to the Drive-Thru Menu Board. We all got Burgers, I got Onion Rings and Hush Puppies added you mine. Everyone else got French Fries. The Burgers were Bland, Flavorless and the Hamburger Bun was stale. I only liked the Onion Rings and Hush Puppies and the Fries were not fresh. I won't be returning to this place, if you want a quality Burger go to Five Guys across the Street. read more

They over charged me $2.69 and when I asked about it they tried to justify it - it clearly a misunderstanding on his part but I didn't make a big deal about it. Dine-in is not open due to COVID but that's fine, many Cooks Out (yes, that is the correct plural) don't have dine-in anyway so having it at some point in the future and past is a plus. Always try to stop at a Cook Out when I come down South. Their burgers are simply the best you can get in a drive-thru, and the trays are a really good value. I usually order white cheddar cheese bites and Cheerwine, which go together well. My only real complaints? Speed, which is always an issue with popular drive-thrus. You can tell that management does not regard cleanliness as a top priority. Additionally, I think morale is extremely low among staff. The personnel taking orders was clearly not happy working there and it reflected in her demeanor and mannerism. The eating area, drink dispensers, and restroom are just disgusting. Few chains provide a better bang for your buck than Cook Out. I mean, where else can you get a full, decent meal for $4.99 plus tax that actually fills you up without a coupon? It's probably good that I don't live near a Cook Out; because I'd be here way too often. Burger is better than any of the other cheap fast food places (almost on par with Five Guys, actually). Thieves. Do not trust this establishment. So the evening before Thanksgiving I visited this location. This is what I sent to the Cook Out leadership team. "I am just concerned about the trustworthiness of your location in Harrisonburg, Va. On 26 Nov 2021 at about 1800hrs I visited this location. I had a rather larger order and forgot to get my debit card back. The next day I noticed my card missing. I immediately checked my bank account and noticed there was about $600 in charges to Walmart.com. I immediately notified my bank who is now conducting an investigation. I plan to pursue this to prosecution to ensure this never again happens to another customer. Really sad for this to happen the evening before Thanksgiving." This is what I received back. "Hello, We appreciate your feedback. We are sorry that your experience was less than satisfying. We will get this experience filed. If you would like to speak to a customer service representative further about this experience please call 1-866-547-0011. Thank you and have a wonderful day!" In reading the previous reviews, it sounds as though folks went to 2 separate restaurants. We just left the ONE STAR version. Where to begin? There were 3 of us. All ordered the combo. Unfortunately, *I* didn't read these reviews before going. *I* ordered the chicken quesadilla. Just as a previous reviewer mentioned, it was hot liquid (good description; I couldn't come up with one, myself) cheese with GHOST chicken. That's right! When I took it back to let them know they gave me a cheese quesadilla, when I ordered the chicken, the employee was adament that it was there - just shredded. From our table: the chicken tenders were tasteless, the quesadilla was already reviewed, the fries were nice, the hush puppies and cold slaw were good. From the location: I loved the decor, right down to the stamped concrete sidewalk outside. The women's room. HORRIBLE. I have photos too add that should explain that scenario. There was no sweet tea. Some sweet lady waited over 10 mins for some to be made, as she was promised. My son originally wanted it, as well, but opted for the Hi-C fruit punch. It was awful, too. Watery. So. My 1 star? I was confused when I heard the name Cook out for the first time. I thought people were going to buy groceries and have a cookout.. The first time I tried it, it wasn't all that great, but it was cheap. I usually get the cookout trays which is a main item and two sides. I think the burgers here are good. Sometimes the burger patties are like hockey pucks, sometimes they aren't. Not very consistent. I feel like some burger patties are cooked beforehand and are put together.. That might explain why the order comes out super fast. The milkshakes here are alright too. They have a large variety to choose from.
