I had urges to try hot pot for a very long time but always had excuses to avoid it. This was…read moreclearly a bad plan as this hot pot restaurant was fantastic. When I first entered, it was busy. The smell of the combination of different broths and foods filled the air. It did make the room a bit warm but that's to be expecting in a room filled with boiling pots. After sitting down, we were quickly explained how to order on the menu and left alone. We ended up with a dual pot of hot and spicy broth and of tom yum kung broth. I'd like all of the meats and vegetables we ordered but it's best to say that the options were plentiful and I was able to get fresh shellfish. Yes, I could even get seasonal crab, razor clam, and scallop. It didn't take very long for the pot of broths to come out, along with the giant plate of foods we ordered to go along with it. I'm a big eater and even this looked overwhelming to me. And the quality of food matched the quantity. All of the vegetables were clearly freshly cut and the shellfish was clearly fresh. It was a very fun experience to cook foods in the pot. Occasionally they'd come around to add more water to the pot as it boiled off. They also offered to bring us more food. I never needed it but it was good to know I could get it. In hindsight I could have used more crab because it was clearly worth the price on its own. I really would want to go back. It's not exactly a cheap place but at £16.99 per person it was such a good experience that I'd happily go back.

I ate so much fish, even more than when I was at those restaurants I had in China! They also give Chinese lots of other genuine Chinese food as an add-on for free: steamed buns, roasted beef, chicken feet, ice cream.... Lots of appetizers! We had great memories at this restaurant. I would definitely come back whenever I return to Glasgow! What's more, they have Karaoke for free!

Asian style? Yes please? Fancy a zoo of food? Aye ok then? Let the unofficial Yelp night commence…read more So I entered in to discover they do giant beers, which is 4 pints of beer with a big stick of ice in it. It also comes with its own tap to pour out the beer yourself. Cost - fifteen smackeroos. So we were seated and waited for others to arrive with the men folk and their big beer. You think why only two stars? Well back in the day it was exciting. All them crazy Mongolians coming at ya on the big mural, crazy weapons on the wall and a zoo which you use to create your own recipe. The novelty is still there to make up your own flavas in the wee silver bowls. Choose to follow the recipes on the wall or go wild and create your own with the ingredients provided. I played it safe. So I feel the place is kinda outdated. The service was a bit disappointing but hopefully it was a one off. The place was busy, which was due to many Groupon deals they have on at the moment (we were informed by member of staff), two birthdays one featuring a large group and the poor guy dressed as a Mongolian warrior and sat on a throne. I have done that to a previous boyfriend, he loved it. Then of course our group. We were not really served much, i.e. we couldn't get a member of staff to try and get more drinks so had to keep going up to the bar. We used the Yelp offer to get free beers but unfortunately they were 4 months out-of-date. Some people also weren't happy with their food. I was pleased with mine and I did enjoy the choice they had on offer. I didn't chance the horse though. They also add a 7.5% service charge. Hmmm?! Say no more! I think if they updated, dropped the service charge and tightened up their service or had more staff on, I think there could be a Mongolian revival.

Twas always one of those places that…read moreyou've heard great things about, and are always meaning to try, but somehow never get around to it. This night, however, heralded a birthday night out which was to kick off by stuffing our faces with mystery meats in this fine establishment. Be warned, do not bring Vegetarians here. There is very little for them to eat. Mongolians were highly carnivorous! Now, I was a bit cagey paying £23 for what was essentially an all you can eat buffet as I often find it difficult these days to consume more than one or two plates, but I was pleasantly surprised by the place. One look at their wee video monitor outside, you just know they do not take themselves seriously at all. The décor was quasi Mongolian, but quite warm and inviting in the front part of the restaurant. My friends and I were conveniently located at the back on the other side of the partition to the buffet (the partition seemingly styled to look like the Great Wall of China), and I had a nice view of a historical map of the Mongolian Empire. It was fun to look at while we were waiting. I also enjoyed watching the chefs cook on a hot plate with swords, and the occasional fiery whoosh - my inner pyro is showing again. The whole vibe of the restaurant seems to be geared towards the party crowd. There are very few tables for less than 6 as far as I can tell (the few I spotted were also empty), and with their Beer Bongs and Cocktail Fishbowls it's easy to see why this place would be appealing to people at the start of a big night out. Also, if you tell the person taking your reservation that you are booking for a birthday, leaving do, or stag / hen do, the guest of honour gets to sit on a wooden throne, dress as a Mongolian war lord, and the staff will put a firework in your dessert while singing Happy Birthday or some variation for other events, all for no extra charge. Fantastic stuff! I don't know why, but when I heard we were going here I was a wee bit overly keen to try a zebra. Probably all this horse burger talk that's flying about lately! Well, not only did I consume zebra, but I deftly devoured horse as well - which is good because I was so hungry that I could have eaten a whole one. Strangely gamey taste, but thoroughly enjoyable! I also ate Bambi's mum and Thumper. Delish. Unlike a traditional all you can eat, your food is cooked after you assemble your mix of meats, veggies and flavours, which means you sometimes have a bit of a wait between food bowls. My friends and I devised a system to cut waiting time, cheeky devils that we are. Basically, as soon as one bowl of food arrived back at the table, we toddled back up to put a second in to be cooked. This worked out smashingly, like a never ending chain of foodstuffs. It felt much more 'all you can eat' that way. In the end, I think we all managed about three bowls each. I will say that as a person with a food intolerance (not deathly allergic, but hey), I had no idea that the burnt whiskey sauce that came with the Kangaroo Haggis was a cream sauce. It was not labelled as such on the menu, but I ate it anyway because I don't like to cause a fuss. It tasted nice (if not particularly tasting of whisky), though it caused me a bit of discomfort later - most irksome. I was also a bit disappointed that all of the desserts also contained dairy, if not mostly made of dairy products. I ordered the rhubarb crumble and had to donate the ice cream to someone else, which made my heart weep a bit. Twas still very tasty, though. Everybody else had the mars bar cheesecake, which caused me to look on with envy - apparently it's gorgeous. If you want to try something different and don't mind paying for the experience, this place could be for you. Maybe you'll even get your own throne!

I knew I had to come and have a look at the new and improved Buchanan Galleries foodcourt. To say…read moreimproved wouldn't be hard as it was just Super Generic Food Court before hand. The Burger King is still in place, however, so if you feel the need for a whopper, you can still get that. The star are the independent retailers though. I'm led to believe they rotate and change with a few regulars staying, so I'm obviously just reviewing what I had from Surf Dog. There were many options from lots of different cuisines, but as soon as I saw a chilli dog, my mind was made up. With the dog for £6, a side for £3 - I had onion rings, rather than the sweet potato fries - and a can of soft drink for £1, my meal came to a reasonable tenner. The Taste Buchanan set up is pretty unusual in that it's made out to be an outdoor garden, only indoors and on the top floor of a shopping centre. Garden benches and school style chairs are the order of the day, and it's a nice touch not to be presented again with generic seating from Bland Furniture R Us or wherever food courts usually go. After a short wait for my food to be prepared from scratch, it arrived. The chill dog was gorgeous, presented with just the right mix of chilli, sour cream and grilled jalapenos to be a total and utter mess to eat... that's the sign of a good chilli dog, folks. The chilli itself was warm and wholesome, not too spicy so the heat didn't overwhelm the taste of the dog, but the addition of the grilled jalapenos meant you could add extra heat if you wanted. Of course I did, because that's how I roll. The onion rings were light, crispy and just ideal for dipping in leftover chilli and sour cream. I would definitely get a side order of those again! To sum up, I love the idea of various retailers in one place and changing from time to time, if they're all of this quality and value for money, then it's definitely going to be a hit. I should remember though, that there is no graceful way to eat a chilli dog in public, although at least this time, I managed to avoid spilling it down my shirt, which is a bonus and unusual.

What a great concept, and so far the offerings have been top notch…read more The idea is simple enough - rotate 'street food' vendors in a permanent space - giving smaller vendors an opportunity in a prime location, and giving us punters the chance to sample the wares of some places we might not have tried otherwise. I was lucky enough to be there on opening night and have been back twice since and I've not been disappointed with the food on offer yet. On the first night I tried a few of the offerings including bao from Chompsky - I tried two, the garlic mushroom, and the pulled pork, both delicious - and a sneaky slice of pizza from Nomad (part of the Firebird team I think). Ohhh and of course I started with ice cream from Equis (hey, it's the first stall you see....). I didn't get over to Union Waffles (look right as you come up the escalator as it's set back away from the other vendors, nor could I fit in any cupcakes by Paige, but there is always next time! I managed to chat to the guy who runs it (and the others) and the premise is that they will rotate every now and then, possibly more often at peak times, but the goal is to bring local vendors, offering quality food, to the masses. I was back last week to try Surf Dog which was also pretty good, a good quality hot dog with crushed nachos and a nice salsa. Downsides would be the layout, which on a busy Friday lunchtime ends up with a long queue of people in one place not realising that you can queue for each vendor independently, and the major downside was the time it took to get our food. Hopefully just teething issues, it'll be a different setup for most of the vendors I'd imagine, switching from a van/truck at a site, to peak lunchtime in the city centre! Price wise it runs about average for a lunch, £5 seems the average for most dishes which, given it's fresh food (unlike the processed guff next door at Burger King) seems reasonable. Anyway I don't mind paying a little extra to get these kind of options in the city centre. I really hope it takes off and is successful, I know I'll be back again! Top tip: get the app (there are signs all over the seating area) to keep up to date with new additions and rotations!

Absolutely lovely dinner experience…read more I went a few years ago and again today. Dinner - You definitely need to make reservations. Today I was at a hotel in walking distance and got a reservation impromptu for lunch and walked right over. The decor is a little old but probably intentional. The carpet in the chairs are all various tartan patterns, with the gentleman and lady staff in tarta suits or kilts. All the staff were very friendly and professional, working as a team to provide the courses and refills. The menu has a selection of five or so each of appetizers, main dishes, desserts and sides. Since it was a weekday lunch, I took advantage of the three-course special for around 39 UK pounds. My three courses are attached, the first being a delicious duck confit over black pudding with microgreens and Curry. Next up was a delicious sea bream (server advised me it was similar to sea bass) over put a nut squash with toasted coconut slivers. Last but not least, was a wonderful apple berry crumble with ludicrously creamy vanilla ice cream. Honestly, I should not have ordered all of this but it was a wonderful meal. Everything is prepared to order and meant to be an experience so do not come here if you're looking for a quick bite before going out on the town. All in all a consistently wonderful place

It looks super sad and there always 2 people eating which I assume are the actual staff members. Every time I build up the motivation to try Asia Ma, I went up straying to Ka Ka Lok as its more "happening". Well for once, we managed to pull through with our decision and enter this empty restaurant. Yes, it was just me and Gian dining in at a Malaysian Chinese restaurant at 930pm. A bit awkward but, we figured maybe cause it's late? Who knows. We were seated by the window by a friendly Malaysian (I assume) auntie, given menus and two baskets of prawn crackers (how generous ey) as we skimmed through the choices of food. Went for the menu with the Chinese words because that's where the good stuff is ey! Hehe Anyway, I chose the dinner for us and we had fried rice, steamed chicken with fungi (takes 20 mins to prepare and no, it's not the fungi you think! It's herbal mushroom!), deep fried homemade tofu, and pot of Chinese tea for 2. So 20 mins of chatting and prawn crackers later, I will quote Gian, "you chose well Sarah". Yes, the food was amazing. SUPER delicious! And huge in terms of portions!! We had extra for lunch the next day! The steamed chicken with black fungi was very herbal, gingery and just plain delightful in terms of light flavours! It complimented the deep fried home made tofu super well because that was seasoned with Malaysian soy sauce, shrimp, spring onions and all kinds of robust flavours! Along with fried rice, it was TWO THUMBS UP FOR ME! Altogether it was 15quid per person, and FYI, I have a lot of left over for lunch haha it's like you're paying for 2 meals! Guys, don't be fooled by the emptiness of Asia Ma, their food is AWESOME! Next time, imma go try the fish head tofu hot pot and Assam fish. Exciting!!

I'm surprised I'm the first to review TBH as Asiama has been here for a while. I have wanted to visit it for ages and I am glad I finally got the chance as the whole experience was really good. From the moment we arrived the staff were friendly and welcoming. It felt a bit like a Hong Kong cafe with the roasted meats hanging in the kitchen. We ordered a selection of dishes to share between four.... Here goes.... Roast duck, salt and chill chicken, Malaysian beef curry, char Sui Sichuan, authentic peppered chicken, fried rice, boiled rice and even some cheeky chips to help soak up the hangover. The food was all pretty good. The Malaysian curry was superb, spicy and with loads of sauce it was a favourite. The salt and chill chicken was really tasty and it was a great size portion. The Sichuan char Sui was my next favourite and was cooked really well. I also enjoyed the peppered chicken which had loads of peppers and onions as well as chicken. The only dish I was not that keen on was the roasted duck which was just a bit to chewy and fatty. The staff obviously thought we did not have enough food as they then brought out some really tasty and authentic dim sum which they informed us was complimentary. It was a great touch. By the time the free oranges arrived I was stuuuuuuffed! I'm tempted to give it 5, but I'm gonna go with four. Reason being the roasted duck was a Wee bit disappointing and the competition for authentic Chinese restaurants in Glasgow is now red hot. Don't get me wrong this place is excellent and I will definitely be back. Nearly forgot.... All that food and only 15 quid a head, bargain! Check it out soon Yelpers, it deserves more reviews.
