Complimentary coffee for My Waitrose card holders.
    Rebecca D.

I'm not nearly rich enough to shop in Waitrose for the most part. However, you can sign up for a My Waitrose card for free and that entitles you to a free coffee once a day, so I find myself here more often that I would otherwise, usually I get lunch as well. They have about the same selection of sandwiches, wraps and salads as any other supermarket and a significantly wider selection of sushi than I normally see. No meal deal, sadly, but maybe that's a good thing since it prevents me from eating so many packets of crisps. Nice deli section too and, to be fair to them, a lot of their "essentials" ranges is pretty reasonably priced. Apart from that I tend not to buy much here. However, if you're looking at a recipe and thinking, "where on earth can I get jerusalem artichokes/a pheasant/sweet cure pancetta?" Or any other slightly less common (or slightly more ridiculous) ingredient, then yes, Waitrose is probably your best bet.

A decent enough supermarket, but not as amazing as I would have liked it to have been. It's on a good location on Byres Road next to some other West End hotspots and, as expected, has some excellent food including some of the most amazing potatoes I have ever had. My main annoyance is their meat. It's good, but not any better than any other supermarket really and especially given the price, is disappointing. There is a lack of butchers in the City Centre and the meat in most of the supermarkets is hit and miss, and overly priced.. (insert long overdrawn rant in here). Regardless, this is a great supermarket and one I would visit more often if it wasn't so dear and out the way for me.

The most divine supermarket I've been in. I wanted to just wander the aisles for hours and see all the wonderful delights they have here. Much cosier and better use of space than Somerfield which used to be here and so new and shiny at the same time. They have counters for everything you could wish for and the food on display there looks delicious and fresh that it's hard to walk past. I also liked the fact that they give you tokens at the checkout (perhaps only if you spend over a certain amount?) that you then pop into a box as a donation for the charity of your choice (from the ones listed). Lovely touch. Fab addition to Byres Road.

    Good ole byres rd waitrose

This isn't the best and newest waitrose but it does the best it can with what it has! Obviously one of the biggest perks of waitrose is the free coffee with a mywaitrose card. My second favourite thing about this store is the staff. They are always willing to help and offer any advice on a product if asked. Thirdly believe it or not waitrose offers great deals on some of their products which for quality are very reasonable priced compared to competitors. If you aren't happy with any product they are more than willing to refund or replace anything. Overall the whole waitrose and John Lewis partnership are top notch and I'm so pleased I live next door to this waitrose!

Despite their cringe-inducing, "Give it Aldi!" adverts, I really quite like Aldi. The German…read morediscount supermarket has improved considerably and has just been named supermarket of the year by consumer group, Which?. Aldi, like arch-rval, Lidl, stock a fairly limited range of mostly own-brand food, and weekly non-food special offers, such as DIY, motoring, outdoors, etc. By limited range, I mean that they tend to focus on a narrower spread of varieties of each product, I quite like this - because I tend to procrastinate... now which variety of houmous to choose? Regular, Peri-peri, red pepper, chilli-infused, etc. Keeping it simple speeds up my shopping no end! They now have a "deluxe" range too, like Tesco Extra Special or Sainsbury's Taste the Difference. For a city-centre supermarket, this is probably the best in Glasgow. Prices way cheaper than Asda, and a far wider range than the Tesco/Sainsbury's convenience stores. And with a proper fresh fruit and veg selection. This store is popular with students at the nearby halls, as well as Merchant City residents. Currently, twin pack red pointed sweet peppers are 79p - compared with around £1.80 in Tesco. 500ml Williams Bros beers are £1.60 or so, tinned tomatoes 30p, 6 large free-range eggs, 99p, cherry plum tomatoes 59p. The weekly super-six fruit and veg deals is epic, last week a bag of six oranges for 59p... amazing! A special mention has to be made for Aldi's Ribera del Duero red wine - this is absolutely one of the best budget (sub-£15) reds you can buy. Trust me on this, you'll impress the snobbiest of dinner guests with this one, it's awesome, and under £6. In summary, really good quality stuff, large range of fresh fruit and veg, good meat and chilled section, great booze, and who knows, you might pick up a bargain riding crop or air compressor!

Things I dont like: There's a tendency to wait until there are huge queues before opening another checkout - and then only having it open for 5mins. I wish it was bigger.

I've seen at weekends like melon or even fresh asparagus for 20p. Sainsbury's are heading to the route of having little staff and more of those awkward self service counters. I want to make stew and forgot to pick one up yesterday. Because I always go here after work and it closes early (i think it's opening hours reflect the surrounding office buildings), things start getting reduced at about 5 and I finish at 5 so always grab a bargain. I picked up half a swede, a small bag of new potatoes and a cauliflower all for the princely sum of 90p! They didn't have any vegan butter which I also planned to pick up but I will survive without it...for now. This place recently got self scanners which amuse me because as usual there was a man telling everyone to come use them but only 1 person on the actual checkout and a huge queue. Self scanners annoy me.

When I was last here there was a pretty bad stench where the vegetable section is l was told that it was a bottle of TCP that someone broke a few says earlier & they couldn't get rid of the smell. With these smaller Tesco metro style shops they tend to stock a smaller selection, with pretty narrow aisles, you definitely couldn't get two trolleys down those aisles. They have the basics and they've been extending their selection of Polish, North American and Carribean foods, as well as including more Halaal options and a few other bits and pieces. They're definitely doing better in terms of their selection than they were a few years ago. You can probably find most of the items you really need here, but don't expect anything too out of the ordinary. They are clearly desperately pushed for space, though. The shelves are stacked quite high and the aisles are really narrow. Their standard time to restock seems to be at around 17:30 most days and, combined with the narrow aisles and the rush of people dropping in to get groceries on their way home during rush hour, this just feels like awful timing. It can be really difficult to navigate around the store. Also, staff just stop to have conversations in the middle of aisles quite a lot. I get it, it's probably pretty boring at times, and I've never minded staff chatting, but they always seem to do it right in the way of the items I need... Maybe I'm imaginging it! On the plus side they have a pretty fair selection of wine and beer for such a small store. Beer more so than wine, but they're holding a few of my favourites now so that keeps me happy. Sure, it's convenience store prices mostly, but occasional offers make it worth it. Note: There are two Tesco Expresses near here. This review is for Tesco Express Yorkhill (at 1071 Argyle Street), kind of opposite Lebowski's. The second one is the Tesco Old Dumbarton Road Express, is newer and is kind of across the road from Firebird.
