I mean, when do they do it, how do they do it? Do they have super fast midgets who sprint from the gaps between isles to scoop up any crumbs, litter or random detritus? Do said midgets have mop attachments on their feet to allow a kind of 'killing two birds' type ethos when cleaning up afore mentioned debris? You see peepholes, these are the burning questions that keep me awake at night! Anyway, spick span, clean store selling Brewdog beers and other alcohol and stuff. Good, aye.

Most recent to shop for a Thanksgiving dinner I hosted for 15 of my friends. Everything about this Tesco Extra is great. It's big, it's bright, it's airy. There are nooks and crannys of goodies everywhere you turn. I've even noticed lately, there's a self serve kiosk to print pictures that you can simply hook up to your phone (they have phone jacks for every type of phone) and print photo quality pictures from your phone!! How mega is that?! I come here when I'm looking for things I can't find close to where I live (not that this Tesco is far away). They have loads of different ethnic sections where I have been able to buy things from back home that I wouldn't normally find at my local shops in town. Canned pumpkin and corn meal being two of the items I picked up for my party. The employees here have always been nothing less than helpful when I've needed them, and although it's always slammed packed with people, I've never had any issues with getting in and out with ease when I've needed to. There is underground parking which is fab on those rainy days (if you drive) and nearby access to public transportation if you need it. Also, in the building that houses Tesco, there's a post office, a Greggs, a card store, a dentist office, among other things. It really could be your one stop shop in the Mary Hill area! :) Although I prefer to shop local, there are just some days when a mega store is where I can find what I'm looking for! i'll always be back!

If you do have to go inside, it can be a bit of a faff as they have a weird queuing system for paying for petrol and a separate queue if you're just in the shop buying things. There's a cash machine out front, and the shop inside is a reasonable size. So yeh, I don't mind a visit to this Sainsbo's (as I like to call it) and find it pretty convenient for petrol/snack needs.

I find the security staff intimidating and rude I think one guy there has mummy issues and should really have counselling and not be taking his anger out on customers who do no wrong. The self service section is a joke as half of them have not been switched on and the one l used made me feel as if l just won the jackpot on a fruit machine in a pub, how can a shop justify paying a customer 62p change in 2p pieces. Ice cream that has been defrosted is being re frozen and sold again when l reported the issue to the duty manager he did nothing. Tesco sort yourselves out!

The neatly stacked boxes of fresh produce outside the door drew me in immediately. Inside there is a fairly big Halal meat counter with lovely cuts of meat on display. There were a few other shoppers in when I made my visit, perusing the shelves of spices and picking up fruit. Some of the stuff I have never even heard of, to be honest, and it was a bit of an education for me. The staff do seem to be friendlier than the norm and asked if there was anything I needed help with. I didn't even realise this shop was new, but I hope it does well.

They have a huge range of fruit and vegetables, spices and rices. A little bit more unusual is the fact that my friend comes here for her cosmetic fix. Coconut milk is the only thing that she puts on her skin and tells me that since using it her skin is the best it's ever been. It's also allegedly very good for your hair so she slaps it on as a night time conditioner. I'm yet to try these tips for myself but I keep meaning to so next time I pop by coconut milk will be first on my list.

Morrisons is more in my budget range for the weekly shop, but there's always something in Waitrose to tempt you into spending more than you intended when you came in. Of course, all supermarkets want to do just that, but Waitrose seem to manage it more easily than most. This branch isn't huge, but it's somewhere larger than a 'metro' size and has more in it than you would think. They've even opened up a wee coffee bar at the front now, which seems to attract a few thirsty shoppers. The upstairs car park gives them a big advantage over Tesco and M&S farther down the road for bulk shoppers with deep pockets, but for me it's always a hand basket '5 items or less' style of visit.

Not only did it provide reassurance to it's residents that they were just as middle class as those from the nice parts of Edinburgh, but it allowed the West Enders to finally ditch their transparent bohemian pretence and concentrate on what's really important in life, like eating pheasant. When people talk about Waitrose it's position as a status symbol never seems far off their lips, but the quality is there too. If you're after something a bit special for dinner they sell countless brands you won't find elsewhere, and things like veal and venison that are often unavailable in other supermarkets. Well laid out, well stocked, and with a token nod to the fairtrade ethos if you feel guilty about spending a tenner on a loaf of bread. I'm glad they've arrived.

It's quite possible to spend over an hour just browsing through these things before you even make a start on your shopping. This, however, tends to make the overall shopping bill far more expensive as it's almost impossible to progress to the foodstuffs before you've half-filled your trolley with things you hadn't set out to buy in the first place! I therefore prefer to shop in Morrisons across the road, however this is an excellent store and well worth a look if you've got time to browse.

Because I always go here after work and it closes early (i think it's opening hours reflect the surrounding office buildings), things start getting reduced at about 5 and I finish at 5 so always grab a bargain. I picked up half a swede, a small bag of new potatoes and a cauliflower all for the princely sum of 90p! They didn't have any vegan butter which I also planned to pick up but I will survive without it...for now. This place recently got self scanners which amuse me because as usual there was a man telling everyone to come use them but only 1 person on the actual checkout and a huge queue. Self scanners annoy me.

The Co-op is found just around the corner at the top of the main shopping street and on the Oban (north) road.

I've frequented here during many a mad partying night, or even when I've just spilled out drunk from the Captain's Rest after close. Mo's is a lifesaver when you need a snack to sober you up, and the best thing is he and his extended family never seem to get irritated when you're a drunken mess, with money strewn everywhere and indecision over what candy to buy.
