Aldi - Aldo

Merchant City

Despite their cringe-inducing, "Give it Aldi!" adverts, I really quite like Aldi. The German…read morediscount supermarket has improved considerably and has just been named supermarket of the year by consumer group, Which?. Aldi, like arch-rval, Lidl, stock a fairly limited range of mostly own-brand food, and weekly non-food special offers, such as DIY, motoring, outdoors, etc. By limited range, I mean that they tend to focus on a narrower spread of varieties of each product, I quite like this - because I tend to procrastinate... now which variety of houmous to choose? Regular, Peri-peri, red pepper, chilli-infused, etc. Keeping it simple speeds up my shopping no end! They now have a "deluxe" range too, like Tesco Extra Special or Sainsbury's Taste the Difference. For a city-centre supermarket, this is probably the best in Glasgow. Prices way cheaper than Asda, and a far wider range than the Tesco/Sainsbury's convenience stores. And with a proper fresh fruit and veg selection. This store is popular with students at the nearby halls, as well as Merchant City residents. Currently, twin pack red pointed sweet peppers are 79p - compared with around £1.80 in Tesco. 500ml Williams Bros beers are £1.60 or so, tinned tomatoes 30p, 6 large free-range eggs, 99p, cherry plum tomatoes 59p. The weekly super-six fruit and veg deals is epic, last week a bag of six oranges for 59p... amazing! A special mention has to be made for Aldi's Ribera del Duero red wine - this is absolutely one of the best budget (sub-£15) reds you can buy. Trust me on this, you'll impress the snobbiest of dinner guests with this one, it's awesome, and under £6. In summary, really good quality stuff, large range of fresh fruit and veg, good meat and chilled section, great booze, and who knows, you might pick up a bargain riding crop or air compressor!

Things I dont like: There's a tendency to wait until there are huge queues before opening another checkout - and then only having it open for 5mins. I wish it was bigger.

I've never been a fan of Tesco stores, I've always thought the idea of a Tesco shop a few doors…read morefrom another Tesco store that has another Tesco store just around the corner is just a little too creepy and leaving no room for the smaller guy that is already struggling. When I was last here there was a pretty bad stench where the vegetable section is l was told that it was a bottle of TCP that someone broke a few says earlier & they couldn't get rid of the smell. With these smaller Tesco metro style shops they tend to stock a smaller selection, with pretty narrow aisles, you definitely couldn't get two trolleys down those aisles. Quite often at this store there is cages left in the shop filled with rubbish where there is already no room to pass. Free cash machine outside.

This place is fine for a convenient store but if not for convenience I wouldn't choose to shop…read morehere. At certain times of day I actively avoid it. They have the basics and they've been extending their selection of Polish, North American and Carribean foods, as well as including more Halaal options and a few other bits and pieces. They're definitely doing better in terms of their selection than they were a few years ago. You can probably find most of the items you really need here, but don't expect anything too out of the ordinary. They are clearly desperately pushed for space, though. The shelves are stacked quite high and the aisles are really narrow. Their standard time to restock seems to be at around 17:30 most days and, combined with the narrow aisles and the rush of people dropping in to get groceries on their way home during rush hour, this just feels like awful timing. It can be really difficult to navigate around the store. Also, staff just stop to have conversations in the middle of aisles quite a lot. I get it, it's probably pretty boring at times, and I've never minded staff chatting, but they always seem to do it right in the way of the items I need... Maybe I'm imaginging it! On the plus side they have a pretty fair selection of wine and beer for such a small store. Beer more so than wine, but they're holding a few of my favourites now so that keeps me happy. Sure, it's convenience store prices mostly, but occasional offers make it worth it. Note: There are two Tesco Expresses near here. This review is for Tesco Express Yorkhill (at 1071 Argyle Street), kind of opposite Lebowski's. The second one is the Tesco Old Dumbarton Road Express, is newer and is kind of across the road from Firebird.

For that wee special delicacy it's always worth popping into Waitrose. I wouldn't use it as a…read moreregular supermarket though, it's just too pricey for that. Morrisons is more in my budget range for the weekly shop, but there's always something in Waitrose to tempt you into spending more than you intended when you came in. Of course, all supermarkets want to do just that, but Waitrose seem to manage it more easily than most. This branch isn't huge, but it's somewhere larger than a 'metro' size and has more in it than you would think. They've even opened up a wee coffee bar at the front now, which seems to attract a few thirsty shoppers. The upstairs car park gives them a big advantage over Tesco and M&S farther down the road for bulk shoppers with deep pockets, but for me it's always a hand basket '5 items or less' style of visit.

The whole of the G12 postcode seemed to have a collective orgasm when Waitrose opened…read more Conversations in coffee shops shifted from bandwagon-jumping politics to whether or not Waitrose sold quaill's eggs, and it's arrival was exactly what the West End needed. Not only did it provide reassurance to it's residents that they were just as middle class as those from the nice parts of Edinburgh, but it allowed the West Enders to finally ditch their transparent bohemian pretence and concentrate on what's really important in life, like eating pheasant. When people talk about Waitrose it's position as a status symbol never seems far off their lips, but the quality is there too. If you're after something a bit special for dinner they sell countless brands you won't find elsewhere, and things like veal and venison that are often unavailable in other supermarkets. Well laid out, well stocked, and with a token nod to the fairtrade ethos if you feel guilty about spending a tenner on a loaf of bread. I'm glad they've arrived.
