There are two major advantages to this store:
1. They stay open 'til midnight
2. They apparently consistently overstock on fresh fruit, veg, meat and fish - which means they then need to reduce these items when not enough of them are bought. So that's ideal if you're looking for a something for a cheap dinner the same evening (or if you have plenty of freezer space).
There are issues, though. Although it's a large store it has huge rushes around midday and 5pm and the crowds don't disperse very easily. The queueing system seems to confuse a lot of customers (it's easy, folks, stand to the left if you want a traditional checkout, stand to the right if you want a self service one). Even when they get it right, at peak times these queues obstruct the fresh juices and the fresh vegetables.
The timings for restocking shelves also seem to be far from logical and are usually planned to run right into the 5pm rush. Actually, this seems to be a problem for every Tesco Metro I've visited, so perhaps this store can't be blamed by itself.
It is a fair bit bigger than the other convenience store branches of Tesco in the West End and they do have a good range of products. It is handy for a quick lunch deal or to grab a few items on the way home. Although be careful, being a convenience store means the prices of some items can be weirdly high, sometimes you might be better going to Waitrose or M&S.
So clearly it has its place on Byres Road but I wish they'd find a way to fix those niggly issues. read more
