I came in with a large group of friends, we ordered the mezza plate, sultans delight, kebab platter and the clay pot lamb. The fire show of cracking open the clay pot was so entertaining, I especially liked his brand of humor. The music overhead was fascinating and appropriate for whole experience. The baba ghanoush will forever remain in my mind, smokey, vibrant and perfectly textured to be heaven on earth. Portions were a healthy size, every meal had its own standout flavor. Most of the time when I review a place, I go in planning to do so. This is not one of those time. A good friend and his husband were in town, and joined us and another couple and another friend for dinner at Constantinople. I was just vibing along, not taking any photos, enjoying the conversation... and then our order arrived and I pulled out my phone because this was spectacular. From their Ottoman Cuisine (OSMANLI MUTFAĞI) menu, we'd ordered the Pottery Kebab (IKI KIŞILIK) which had the caption "served on fire'. We were enjoying some of their flatbread, served with a butter candle (should have been my clue that this place was way extra!) and plated olives in olive oil and zatar, when the main meal arrived. Fam, they rolled out a cart with live coals and this clay pot and... it was a show. Yes, the whole thing had been cooked on coals, which had then been shoveled onto the cart for delivery. Yes, they broke open the sealed clay pot and dumped it onto a serving tray, having previously delivered dining plates with rice and French fries. And oh my god yes, it was delicious. The space is described as "designed as an immersive cultural experience, where architecture, service, and atmosphere reflect the warmth of Anatolian hospitality". I've never been to Anatolia, but this definitely delivered a whole vibe, warm, inclusive. Super impressive in a building that clearly started life as an IHOP. If you need to find a restaurant that will make you feel like you're on a culinary travel show, with spectacular service, who are very attentive to allergies, and have show stopping dishes, you must make yourself over to Constantinople! Especially great with a group so you can share the fun. I dm'd them on IG to ask beforehand about food allergy accommodation and they were so flexible and nice about it. My son has a dairy, egg, and nut allergy and they said they could for sure adjust to his liking so we felt comfortable heading there. We ordered an array of dishes so I'll start with the Instagrammable hits. The rosemary butter candle with bread (we also asked for one without dairy or egg for my son's allergies) was on the house and the candle not only added to the ambiance, but encouraged our pyro side to play with fire by dipping our bread into it. The bread itself comes puffed up like a balloon and self deflates which is also fun to watch. The pottery kebab is meant to share at $55 and the picture on the menu looked very promising. Our server recommended the beef so we went with that. The pottery kebab is actually lit and hanging out tableside for a good while. We took group photos with it and gawked at it while everyone got their food. The show doesn't stop there! The fire grows bigger, the server taps on it and breaks off the top with one swift move and out comes all the filling onto a metal plate. The dish comes with rice and fries (x2). The eggplant mousaka comes trapped in a lid and when opened, the smoke rises. This dish was also cheesy and very tasty! For dessert we chose the Kunefe which had sheep's cheese inside and it was sweet, salty, and had great textural differences and ofc a great cheese pull. Next were dishes that were more normal (no fire or smoke or cheese pulls) but great nonetheless. My son loves filet mignon so we asked for this without dairy, eggs, nuts. They subbed the mashed potatoes for fries and they ensured the rest of the dish was free of his allergies. We got two orders of beef ribs cuz the pic looked epic. I was thinking it would be like Argentinian asado but it was more like slow braised ribs. Ribs tend to be very fatty but these were on the leaner side and very tender. It was almost a bit dry but the sauce balanced it out. The chicken kebab was well received (I didn't try it). All in all, it was a great team building restaurant and our group had a fantastic meal and will be remembering this day for a while. The food was more unique and did remind us of Turkey with more stews and not just kabobs. But as others have noted very slow staff. Took a good 20 minutes to take our order after we knew what we wanted. The bartender stopped by 10 minutes after we ordered and said you got your wine right? No wine glass in front of me... So an hour after we got there we finally got the bread and then the meal about 10 minutes later. We were very hungry. My beef stew was really good! The bread is good but not warm. When the wine finally came it was a very generous pour. My husband enjoyed his beef and lamb patties and the eggplant puree under was perfect for a diabetic. The other item that was an issue for me is the inside dining area has fluorescent lights in the fixtures. Those give me a headache. So if we go again I will want a seat on the inclosed patio with nice lighting or will need to take it to go. Since the lights were bothering me I wanted to leave quickly after eating. We got the bill ok after flagging someone down. I let him know the food was great but unfortunately the lights bother me. He said try the patio. Then he left the check and disappeared. So glad to have serious Turkish food again, I've been missing it since Lokanta closed. Constantinople is a great Turkish restaurant, serving many classic dishes like manti, pide, and ezme, and it's all really good. When you sit down they bring you a lavas (puffed up bread), one of my favorite things. I know the menu looks a bit meat-heavy, but the vegetarian items are worth it; I had a stuffed eggplant dish (Karniyarik) that I'd never tried before and it was great. Constantinople occupies and entire building -- a former theme restaurant of some kind, which gives them spacious seating and lets it be well-decorated and quiet (although some of the decorations stare at you -- you'll see what I mean). Do make a reservation, though, they're quite popular already. The service was great -- very friendly and helpful. And not too expensive, and what's not to love? read more

What a great find in northwest Portland! This spot opened up in November, and we were excited to try the first authentic Turkish restaurant in Portland. The inside of this restaurant is really nice. They've done a great job of making it feel elevated but still approachable. Cloth dinner napkins and tablecloths with comfy chairs and booth seating, but still the laid-back Portland vibe that you get at most restaurants here. We started with the Turkish Delight cocktail, which has a spirit called Raki in it, as well as muddled blueberry and pomegranate juice. Really fresh tasting! If you've never had Raki before, it has an anise/black licorice flavor and is definitely worth a try. They have a nice wine selection, and the next time we go back we'd like to try some of the Turkish wines they have. They brought out a complimentary puffed bread with marinated olives and a rosemary butter candle on the side. The bread was really nice and light! The olives were delicious and the butter candle was a fun thing I've never seen at a restaurant before. Our table ordered the following food: - Pottery kebab (we selected the beef option): the menu notes this, but it's definitely enough food for two people. They bring the pottery out on a bed of fire and then split the top open and pour the meat out in front of you. They also provide two plates that have rice and fries on them. The rice was INCREDIBLE! There was so much food we had to get a to-go box, so you definitely get your money's worth. - Falafel: our friend is vegan, so his options were more limited. He decided on this and said it was really good and he could tell they had made everything fresh. The portion for this is good as well -- not the small falafel you normally get at places. - Caprese salad: how they found good tomatoes this time of year is beyond me, but they looked incredible! Thick slices of cheese and a generous amount of basil and balsamic glaze. She said it was really good. If you're vegetarian, you likely won't have an issue finding something to eat here, but if you're vegan you're going to be a bit more limited in what you can have. Well we were excited to try this place after spending some time in Istanbul- was hoping for a decent Turkish meal. The place was crowded especially on a Wednesday night so good for them. We had a group of 8. I shared the spinach stuffed chicken with a saffron and curry sauce. Sounds great - eh? The hardest most overcooked chicken ever. He said Constantinople is the best in town, so of course we tried it out. Everything we ordered was delicious. The clay pot thing with the fire is fun, of course, but more importantly, it tastes good. So did the chicken stew, the kebab, and a couple of appetizers. I also liked the mule with raki. Service was also very good. Not fast, but this is the kind of meal that should be savored. The menu is quite big, with lots of choices even for vegetarians or me (I don't eat mammals). It is great to see an authentic new restaurant coming up in the NW21st happening area. There were few other establishments before in the same spot but the owner did a great job of upgrades to give a modern look with LED lighting. It looks like a fine dining, great date spot for any foodie. We have a big group gathering ~40 people and were given the side big room area with multiple tables and couple of dedicated waiters. First off, kudos to the new owners for giving this longstanding building a fresh coat of bright, blue paint. It really catches one's eye along 21st Ave and makes the block look a lot nicer. As for the experience inside, the food was good. Prices are fair but a little on the high side. A mere felafel sandwich, for instance, would set you back $17. Anything with meat and we're talking more than $20. The server was nice and was quick to take our order. The order of baba ghanouj as an appetizer was quick to come out of the kitchen, thought it seemed to come with no independent pita bread (the waiter brought out what I assumed was a complimentary piece of pita along with 4 olives soon after sitting down and before we ordered the pita-less baba ghanouj). The wait between the appetizer and the entrees, however, was rather long. It seemed like at least 15 minutes. For lunch service, I expected it to be quicker. The "meatballs" were more like meat patties. They were tasty enough, but not what I expected. That may be due to my own lack of familiarity with Turkish food. I've had it a few times and I've even been to Turkey once (years ago), but I'm no expert. I'd give the place another chance but probably won't rush back. This Turkish restaurant is a great addition to a busy part of Portland, and I really appreciated that they have a parking lot. I went on a Friday night, so it was packed, but the service was still excellent. The menu is broad and interesting--almost too many good options to choose from. Everything we ordered was delicious. Constantinople is a truly special addition to Portlands food scene. I was very excited and curious to check out this new Turkish restaurant, which now occupies the iconic NW 21st space that was previously home to Carina Lounge (before that, Basta). The menu here is wonderfully extensive, with so many tempting options to choose from. Our server was great, and guided us through the menu in a thoughtful way. The food is clearly rooted in Turkish tradition (with some modern options), and you can tell real pride and care goes into the food here! Highly recommend getting the Mezze Platter, every dip was honestly SO good (the eggplant saksuka was prob my fav), and it was fun to use this variety of dips throughout the rest of our meal. It seemed like every table was getting the Pottery Kebab, which our server highly recommended for a unique experience - order it and see why for yourselves!! The Manti dumplings were also so delicious and comforting, you could tell the love and care that went into folding these tiny little yummy beef dumplings! Our server also introduced us to Turkish wine, which paired beautifully with the food. We wanted the full Turkish beverage experience and tried Turkish beer (excellent), Raki (similar to ouzo if that's your thing), with a delightful Kunafe with Turkish coffee/tea to finish the meal too. The renovated space is warm and welcoming, decorated with gorgeous Anatolian handmade rugs (Nedim, one of the owners here also owns Nomadic Vintage Rugs on SE Morrison!) the atmosphere is perfect for date night, a family dinner, or a group of friends who love to share plates and linger. Nope--this was not it fam. I was so excited to try Constantinople, and we came in around 6:40 on a Friday. We had a 7 pm reservation so were fine to wait as we knew we came early but was told "we'll put you at our best table" sarcastically and then put literally at the table next to the front door with people standing near us the whole time waiting to be seated. It took around 25 minutes for someone to come by and take our order and THREE TIMES he would start taking our order and then run away saying "I'll give you more time" --hello???? Finally we put our order in, it takes another 25 minutes to get drinks and around 50 minutes for our food to come out. Lots of people order the clay dish which is one hundred percent a gimmick for the price. The portion is so tiny for the price and it's just a 30 second show. We got the Ali Nazek kebab, the manti and the lahmacun, and the blueberry mocktails to drink. The kebab was very small for the price, we thought it would be twice the size, the manti were ok but the sauce was very bland, and the lahmacun was probably the only decent thing somewhat worth the price. Through the whole meal we were so nervous just watching waiters constantly colliding with each other around the corners and when the kitchen doors opened, you could see dishes and pots all over the floor. I'm not an inspector so honestly can't speak to that but it definitely was not appetizing to look at. Finally we just skipped dessert because we'd been there for so long and just asked for the check, and when we tipped (and we knew they calculated it after taxes), the waiter gave us the nastiest glare. I've been searching for real Turkish food in Portland for such a long time, and finding Constantinople honestly made my day. I ordered the lahmacun, and it brought back so many memories. I've missed this flavor so much, and it was exactly what I was craving -- thin, crispy, perfectly spiced, and absolutely delicious. You can really feel the care and authenticity in the food. This new Turkish restaurant has brought fresh energy to the iconic NW 21st space once home to Carina Lounge, and it's already one of my favorite recent finds. We specifically requested seats at the bar, in my experience, it always gives you a closer, more personal feel for the food, the team, and the overall vibe. It was absolutely the right call. The ambience is lively and fun, and the moment you walk in, the aromas are incredible. The rosé Turkish wine was delicious and generously poured. The bread!!, the olives, and especially the butter dipping candle were standouts, simple, comforting, and unforgettable. We ordered the hummus along with the lamb and chicken kebab plates, and everything was outstanding. The meats were juicy and perfectly seasoned, the rice and vegetables were full of flavor, and you could tell real care went into every dish. The whole meal felt vibrant and beautifully balanced. Right away there's water and someone there to help you out. The menu is very well done with high-quality pictures of each dish and descriptions of what they are.
