I know a few Connies so not coming here wasn't exactly an option for us during our Deep South road trip. I did kind of get the vibe we were annoying the staff by walking into the place, they weren't nasty but not welcoming either. I am a vegetarian and GF is intermittently a vegetarian so we both skipped out on the fried chicken. I really wanted to try the blueberry donuts which met expectations. They were fantastic. I looked at them right outta the bag and they were steaming. We got a couple sides as a "snack". The mashed potatoes were EXCELLENT. I also enjoyed the mac and cheese. A Mississippi treasure! Can't come through Tupelo without making a stop at Connie's. The chicken and tenderloin biscuits are legendary. Get them "open faced" and throw an egg on it. The blueberry donuts are addictive. They get you in and out quick, and you'll usually run into someone you know if you're from the area. Went to Connie's today after church. In years past, one would have to get there early or not have a place to sit. Not anymore and I can see why. The tenders were not good. The onion rings (Connie's used to have the best) were totally under cooked. Staff spoke so loud behind the counter one could not even carry on a conversation. I guess the last straw came when we wanted some ketchup. They are now watering the ketchup down that it is literally like water. Would not stay on your rings or fries. One of the girls was rude. Hardly any french fries with the kids meal. i ordered sauces but the girl kinda threw the meals on the counter and didnt bother to check so another lady kindly put them in. I found the blueberry doughnut on yelp used in a bread pudding. But that restaurant wasn't going to be open so I searched for Connie's. Glad I did! That was some of the best fried chicken I've had in years! Spicy & the original were awesome! Cooked to perfection, juicy, not dry. And that Blueberry doughnut, Perfection! We took home 2 dozen! Food is good. Service not so much... First visit, was great... woman was friendly, comunicated, really seemed glad I was there ... The following two visits, I was met with inattentiveness, and more or less, people doing the minimum...in fact, as I waited, at least a full minute or two, standing at the counter, waiting to be greeted or recognized, one employee stood right in front of me, leaning on the counter, on her phone, and never even looked at me... I went for the chicken, not a social event, but there is an aspect of serving people, in the food industry, that plays an important role in the customer experience, and overall success of a service based business.... Connie's has always been an institution in Tupelo. With the purchase by new owners I had some concerns. They did seem to go thru a transition and lots of new employees, but they seem to have it all working great now. I have the usual chicken gravy biscuit often and it's been great. All of the chicken is amazing, even the livers, and the rolls are just as good as the biscuits. If you want something lighter, they have an awesome salad bar. It looks small, but it's packed with a variety of items. Whether you dine in or drive thru, order some blueberry donuts to take with you. They are a treat, like little blueberry cakes.
