Amazing to find a survivor of the destruction crowd that is trying their best to rid history of the Confederacy and anyone or place somehow associated with slavery. This small, tasteful, well-maintained park located, on the downhill end of Main Street, is an excellent encapsulation of the four aspects of the Civil War in the South.
One monument memorializes the men and boys from Fort Mill, at that time a very rural town, who died while serving in the Confederate Armed Services. Many of the last names sound very familiar as their decedents are still part of the town.
Another recognizes the women of the town who supported the Confederacy and the sacrifices they endured throughout the war.
A special monument honors the Negro people, including slaves and freed men, who supported and served the Confederacy.
And the fourth monument is to the Catawba Indian people who also were Confederacy supporters.
The park is a fitting recognition that many facets of life were affected and involved in the Civil War. Also, that the Confederacy WAS their country to which they were loyal.
A great historical memorial. Southern pride and heritage of a long lost era and a key part of American history.
A good place to bring out-of-town visitors, as well as to all form of Southerners. read more
