It's basically peas (presumably frozen thawed uncooked) and a few other ingredients tossed with mayo and covered with cheese. It reminded me of something my grandma used to make, which is just fine. This is a classic diner in true 1950's style. The waitstaff is friendly and attentive. The food is standard diner fair. There's nothing fancy or "elevated" just solid diner favorites like corned beef hash for breakfast and chili cheese coneys at lunch. I love this little place! A true 50's diner. The decor, the music, the service and the food. I felt like I should have dressed in Bobby socks to come in here to meet my letterman-sweater boyfriend for a strawberry milkshake Restaurant: so clean! Lots of spotless stainless steel, old-fashioned glitter booths in great condition and a very clean counter. My server was probably the sweetest person in all of Mansfield. It was my first time in here and she made me feel like a regular - just loved her. The food was good and so classic! I got a double cheeseburger w/ the works and fries. The (steak burger) burger is the old-fashioned hand made ones and fries were done perfectly. I finished my lunch with a cup of coffee - not Starbucks but Starbucks is not what you want. I was attracted to Coney Island Diner due to its awesome signage, and also the fact that I was craving a chocolate milkshake. My waitress was very kind and came to my table right away to ask what I wanted to drink. I ordered a chocolate milkshake and water, and then ended up getting a cheeseburger and coleslaw. The burger was fair, however when I went to eat my coleslaw I found a tiny, dead fly in it :/ I don't know if it was there before or if it had happened to land in there when I moved my fork, but there it was. Coleslaw aside, I enjoyed the environment and the staff. I can't say if I'd stop in there again for a meal, but I would drop in for a milkshake! read more

The fries were terrific, I ordered the coneys, my wife the meatloaf sandwich. Both were okay, way too salty for our taste though. We're glad we stopped in for the experience. It's always hard to write a review for a favorite place that you have decided to no longer patronize. Long time customers of Coney Island Diner in the Carousel district on downtown Mansfield, my family for several generation would frequent the diner almost once a week. Our daughter, who grew up eating there, always made sure to stop for lunch when she was home after moving to Georgia. After the business was sold to the new owners when Cathy and Jim retired many held their breath hoping that not only the great food but the restaurant "Cheers" vibe would continue. Sadly over the past few years all of this has slipped away. Here are a few examples. While they obtained the actual "secret" recipe coney sauce as part of the deal, there have been a few times when they have "run out". Our recent visit this week found the buns hard and not fresh and the hot dogs are decidedly smaller. The "famous pea salad" has also taken a hit. It was maintained in its original incarnation for about the first year, and excepting sometimes they didn't get the proportions of ingredients as the original, it was still good. As of late, the lettuce is hardly visible anymore. It's not so much a salad anymore but peas, onions, bacon and LOTS of shredded Swiss cheese on a plate. What lettuce is there is very old (brown spots) and not the green part of the iceberg but the bland center heart of the head. I have had to send it back several times. Finally this week I didn't as our waitress never stopped back to ask about our meals so at this point why bother. They are closed more than they are open. If you look at their facebook page you will see they are closed frequently for various reasons, no cook (which we could give them a pass sometimes, but this happens a lot), family event, out of this or that, etc, etc. So, the hours posted are not consistently reliable. You get the impression that the new owners are running the diner as hobby, not a business. Sad, with the decline of the quality of their namesake items, the inconsistent hours of operation, we fear that the diner is headed for more loyal customer losses such as us. read more

Hidden Treasure in Mansfield. Was traveling to visit family in Michigan, on Route 30, was looking for places to stop for breakfast, saw this diner on my search, called them up, phone answered, breakfast was being served, and could be ordered all day. When I arrived, I was pleasantly surprised! The diner was quaint, clean, 50s theme, service was quick, food delicious, and hot! My husband's coffee cup, was never empty. This is a 50's style diner. Counter and booth seating with several tables for two that can be added to the booth to get 6 together. Coney dogs and pea salad are their specialty but they make great burgers, breakfasts and have scooped ice cream. This area of downtown is close to several family friendly activities which can be the reason they will be packed certain days and more relaxed otherwise. Really neat spot. Like stepping back in time. I had one of the blue plate specials: meatloaf sandwich with french fries and coleslaw. It hit the spot after roaming the hallowed halls of the Mansfield Reformatory all morning. Also had two scoops of ice cream. Flavors were phenomenal: honey-roasted peanut and bananas foster. Yum. Service was stellar. Very friendly staff. The ambiance is very retro. And I am hungry for a coney as I think about it. (FYI- Ohio is really one of the only spots that calls a chili dog a "coney". I don't think people in NC or NYC really ever said "coney". Coney dog, maybe....) Anyhow, if you ever happen to find yourself downtown Mansfield, I would strongly advise you to make a stop here. read more

If you're in down town Mansfield in the carousel district check out this cool old school diner called Coney Island. Parking is on the street, on a one way, I'm not sure if there's any other places to park besides that. They serve ice cream, coney dogs, fries, shakes, root beers in the glass bottle etc. typical diner items. We had two coney dogs, an order of fries, and a root beer to split and it was about $7, not bad. The coney sauce tasted good, comes with onions on top too. Fries were okay! You dont get very many for $2 to be honest. Root beer is IBC in the glass bottle. Waitress was very nice, we forgot my wallet in the car and she trusted me to leave and go get it which was cool. Food didnt take long at all to get to the table. Recommend if you're in the area for lunch, checking out the carousel it's in walking distance. read more

What a treat to have this iconic diner still around . After all these years ! It's Mansfield's version of "Arnolds.Drive-In " from the Happy Days TV show . This was the go to hangout for my friends and I Back in our high school days when it was still operated by John and Angelo George and later by Jack Ewers . We ended up there on most Friday and Saturday Evenings after either sports games or midnight movies at the Madison theater , or just cruising the strip in our buddy's 55 Ford . We would usually arrive about 11:30 pm , grab our seat and immediately begin to chow down ! ( the restaurant used to stay open until 3am at the time ) Our usual meal : 2 Coneys , a bowl of chili , and an RC cola . ( sometimes we would even.add Crispy French Fries to that order and end it with the Greek style rice pudding ) Thankfully , The current operators have retained the same 50s style atmosphere , with displays of period artifacts upon the walls , including the illuminated sign that once hung over the entry doors , which advertised coney dogs for a nickel . The only thing missing from "back in the day" is the red curved banquette situated to the right of the entryway , which we used to wrangle immediately upon our arrival .( it sat the six of us comfortably) Pearly May was the cook at the time and turned out some fabulous blue plate specials ! Our usual waitress , Fran , courteously put up with our antics And humored us by laughing at our lame jokes ! The menu is basically the same as back then , but with the addition of some new items like the pea salad and a few other inspirations . By comparison , The restaurant hours are limited these days, with the facility opening Monday thru Friday at 6:30 am And closing by 7:00 pm each evening . ( closing at 4 pm on Saturday ) There are NO Sunday hours . For a real treat , take the time to try this facility out ! There is nothing fancy about the food here... Which is why I LOVE IT! Good ol authentic diner eats!! And really good eats at that!!! The meatloaf sandwich was my personal favorite. Ask them lightly grill it a bit. So good... It's a small place. Very clean. Friendly service. Parking isn't too bad, and totally worth looking for a spot. The decor is awesome. We've been going here for breakfast for years, we meet people who don't usually eat here for breakfast, we recommend the place all the time. The food is good and the service is fast, so it's a great place to go with kids. We went for breakfast today and it was so bad that I'm not sure we will ever be back. People who came in after us were finished eating and leaving before our order arrived. The worst part was there had clearly been an issue with the kitchen, and after we waited for 45 minutes for our breakfast no one even apologized to us (and the owner of the business was our server) we have a 14-month old who we had taken turns taking outside to walk so she wouldn't cry and be disruptive. While out in Mansfield, I decided to try some where new for lunch and was in the mood for a good burger so I stopped by to see what they had. Old school burger bar atmosphere with some great employees. It's an average sized diner but steady business while I was there. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger with fries for a quick lunch. Food didn't take long which was great because I was in a hurry. Burger was great, warm and juicy, you could tell it was fresh off the grill. Overall it was delicious and a great time. The Coney Island Diner has been a fixture in Mansfield since 1936. Naturally it had a nostalgic feel which increases the charm of the place. Very nice and attentive wait staff. Ordered the blue plate special of a coney dog with their famous pea salad. Very pleased with both selections! They also have a great cup of coffee. They also offer Hershey's Ice Cream and we had to grab s couple of sundaes. Did we mention clean bathrooms??? This place is a winner and we wish we had one back home in Dayton. read more
