I was a bit skeptical trying out this place due to some of the reviews but we had a great experience overall! The restaurant itself is incredibly gorgeous. My favorite part were all the plants lined across the ceiling. We went in for a early dinner (around 5:30ish) without reservations and we were sat immediately. Service was perfect - Our server gave great recommendations and checked in on us regularly but not too much so that it's annoying. I don't usually like margaritas but the blood orange margarita was delicious! It a little on the sweet side but pairs perfectly with chips and salsa. If you're looking for authentic Mexican, I wouldn't recommend but in my opinion the vibes were immaculate for the trendy and aesthetically pleasing vibes this place offers! A friend suggested Conejo for dinner. I've been out of the loop with all the new restaurants popping up and she said it was a must try so we went around 7ish on a Saturday. The place was packed but even without a reservation we were seated within 15 minutes. Our server promptly came to greet us with waters and we both ordered a ginger margarita made with mezcal! We placed an order for chips and salsa while we perused the menu. The chips came with not only the salsa but three other accompanying salsas. All were super flavorful and the chips were homemade and right out the fryer! My friend ordered the Baja fish tacos which looked delicious. I ordered the kale Caesar salad and the pastor costras which are kind of like quesadillas but way better! The kale Caesar was easily the best I've ever had! I could eat this salad every single day of my life. The costras was served with pickled peppers and was also incredible. Fair warning, this isn't your average Americanized Mexican restaurant. Conejo is on a different level. Everything is fresh and made in house. And all things considered, the prices are very reasonable. They even have outside seating for the great weather we've been having. The only complaint I have is the parking. If you're lucky, you can find a spot on the street. The queso cooled down a little too soon, needed to be cut with a knife and fork. The short ribs tacos were slightly pink inside, but a little chewy. I thought the taquitos were yummier, crisp but large enough to be satisfying. The ceviche was fresh, perhaps needed a bit more salt. The frozen marg was delish, and the ginger marg kind of plain. The beans were good but not special, I love refried beans and they were cheap so I ordered them anyway. The flan was a great end note--jiggly and sweet. Came for dinner and enjoyed it all! My cucumber jalapeno margarita was just right. My fiance and I shared a number of dishes but I think my favorite was the Alambre Las Costras. The last caramelized cheese situation is everything! And the salsas they bring out with your food should not be skipped. The chili oil salsa was my favorite. Delicious flavor. We also enjoyed the Huarache with pork, Tostada de Pescado, Baja tacos, and de Suadero tacos (this was probably my least favorite dish, good flavor but the brisket was a bit dry). A brand new spot to us and to the town with a bright clean space and atmosphere. Wait staff was very friendly and service was on point. There was a lot of good team work happening everywhere, which as someone who used to work in the industry I appreciate seeing. A great bar with plenty of tequila and mezcal options. I love mezcal and had a flight of three to sample through. Overall every aspect of our mea was thoughtfully made and delicious. We tasted through about every section of the menu. I have one qualm, the tortillas. It's fantastic that they make the blue corn tortillas in house but the texture seems a tad off. Overly sturdy or on the stale side? Maybe that's not the best way to articulate that but as someone who makes tortillas at home I think I just have it dialed in to how "I" expect them to be. Good none the less! Definitely a fun place to try out! With the menu and the name I was hoping for something authentic but it turned out to be more of a hip and trendy Mexican place which is fine too. Their food is definitely delicious and they have menu items that you won't find everywhere. It was a little on the expensive side for the portion size. Fun atmosphere. I had an awesome experience at Conejo yesterday evening. I met two friends there around 5:45/6pm and it was the perfect time. They had plenty of tables inside but we decided to sit outside. They definitely had less available due to reservations. My suggestion would be to get there early if you don't have a reservation to sit outside on a nice night. I don't think the place is marketed as a Mexican tapas restaurant but the portions are definitely tapa sized, so you will need to choose several different things to fill you up. Drinks: We opted for the La Pluma (mocktail). It was made with Hibiscus, grapefruit juice and lemon. It was very refreshing and a beautiful color! You could add tequila or even vodka to it, to make it an alcoholic cocktail. We also ordered a Blood Orange Frozen margarita and the Grapefruit frozen margarita. I personally love the grapefruit frozen margarita best! Tart and perfectly blended. Food: YOU HAVE TO GET the Tostada de Pescado. It was delicious. I could eat several plates of this dish. The dish comes with 2 crispy corn tortillas (size of palm) topped with chipotle cream sauce, tuna sashimi, avocado, fried hibiscus, and crispy leek. So yummy! Second we ordered the Cameron's Petroleros- gulf shrimp in squid ink sauce on a bed of guacamole topped with crispy leek and cilantro. The tacos were yummy but the guacamole flavor really overpowered the taco. You couldn't really taste the squid ink. Still really good. Very interested to come back and try and few more things! Upscale, Mexican food with neat ambiance. The tortilla chips were the best I've ever had but they don't give you a ton. Still worth ordering extra! Guacamole was perfect and highly recommend. I inhaled it and forgot to take a picture. I order three tacos, carnitas, chicken and shrimp. They're small but tasty. I also ordered esquistes(not pictured) which is corn in a cheese sauce with spices. It was delicious! I got a red sangria which was good but smaller than usual sangrias I've had out. Came here for lunch with a friend and was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant itself is lovely - wide open, bright, and has a nice outside patio if weather permits. The menu is different than the usual Mexican fare, and items can be mixed and matched. We got an order of guacamole with chips and the queso fundido with chorizo to start. Both servings were pretty small, but tasty. The chips with the guacamole were really big and thick, which I thought made them dry and hard. I prefer a thinner, crispy chip, but that's just my preference. We also split an order of birrio tacos and added cheese. Again, they were very good but very small. They would have made a better appetizer than entree. Our server was super nice, friendly, helpful with the menu and very attentive without being overbearing. The highlight for me though were the frozen coconut margaritas! OMG, they were delicious and STRONG - a dangerous combo, but just so good. Creamy, sweet, tart, just amazing. Went with 5 friends for Richmond Restaurant Week, excited to try a new place. When I sat down after my party had arrived, the waiter didn't greet me, he just immediately asked what I wanted to drink. Then, four of us tried to order the ceviche as an appetizer (one of three choices, special for RRW) but we were disappointed to hear that it wasn't available and no alternative was offered. Didn't love the salad I ended up getting but that's beside the point. When the main course came out, appetizer plates weren't cleared first. I also didn't love the pork and beans I got at my entree as they were room temperature. Friend of mine thought her barbacoa portion was too small. It then took over 45 minutes for our dessert to come out and we were the last customers in the restaurant. Had to ask a different server for the checks since our server disappeared. I have only been here for a happy hour so I was excited to try the food. It was disappointing. We started with their version of chips and salsa. You would think this would be a shining start of the menu but it's not. Their chips are so big and over seasoned and the oil is practically dripping off. The salsa had a sweetness that is off putting and not what I like. They did bring a trio of salsas to the table that were really good. Next time I would order that but never those chips. I had two tacos (one chicken and the other Tuna) as an entree with the beet salad. The tacos came on a tortilla a little bigger than an English muffin. But small tacos can be amazing. Not these. They were dry, the chicken taco was over seasoned and the tuna kind of rubbery. The tiny portions cooled quickly so you're left with cold over seasoned tacos. The beet salad was vinegar forward. But not bad. My friend had something I couldn't hear her order (it's noisy inside) and she could not eat it because there was so much soy sauce in it. She had the black beans as a side and ate those but didn't say much about them. The atmosphere is cute but I don't think the AC was working so it was really hot when the dining room was full. The guacamole was good but the chips were very thick which I found interesting. The shrimp on the tacos was fantastic but the tortillas weren't even remotely heated up. Not great with corn tortillas. The birria was dry but the tortilla was a little crunchy which was nice. The brisket and carnitas was shockingly dry and I couldn't get any juice out of the limes we were given. Went here twice with coworkers. The first time we stopped by for a tasting. My team and I enjoyed the ambiance and tasting so much the first time that we decided to go again for a smaller team holiday lunch. Our reservation was for 12:15pm and we were seated promptly. Our waitress was very friendly and gave us suggestions on the most popular cocktails. I ordered the blood orange frozen margarita, others ordered the cinnamon margarita and sangria. The blood orange margarita was very tasty as well as the cinnamon margarita (according to my coworker). The sangria wasn't as tasty and somewhat missed the mark. We ordered guacamole and chips for table which came out fresh and was a great way to start our meal. My favorite part was the three salsas they provided to add a kick of flavor to our meals. For our entrees we all ordered tacos, I ordered the Birria de Pollo and Baja shrimp. I also ordered the La Costas - Gobernador as well, as I remembered it from our first tasting a few months back (this was by far my favorite thing on the menu). All of our food came out rather quickly. We were all more than satisfied with our meals and really enjoyed the fresh and delicious ingredients. When I think Mexicana, I think of large plates. Conejo is not the place for large plates. However, it's about the experience. Date night with my wife on a Thursday night at 7pm. We didn't make a reservation and the place was packed. We sat at the bar while we waited for a table, and decided to stay there entire night. My wife is a huge fan of Mezcal and found the selection to be bountiful. For my non-drinkers out there, I tried Athletic Lite brew and it was yummy. For starters we had the Ceviche de la India. Guy next to me said it was spicy, I think not. It was an interesting take on Ceviche. Like something I never had. It was delicious. Out of this world. Pretty large portion too! For mains we shared small plates: Taquitos, Sopes, and de Cochinita Atun (My favorite). The taquitos were a little dry and too fried for my liking. The sopes were delicious, we had one beef and one chicken. Th de Cochinita Atun was smokey and with a pickled twist and I loved every bite of it. We capped the night off with Tres Leches. It was traditional in taste. Just wish I had a little more. I wish I had a little more of everything. However, this is a small plates place with a romantic setting. Perfect for date night. read more

Food had potential to be great, but really dry tacos. Did not like any of the 3 sauces and juice would have been better. Guac and chips came up short. Guac was good but not a lot of it. Chips tasted like my dog would have loved chewing on them. Had to send back 2 margueritas as could hardly drink them. Coconut tasted like I was eating a coconut and the regular marguerita came out of some pre- mix so they hand shook the second one and that was just ok. I've dined at Conejo a few times now and it's been consistently great. One of the standout features of Conejo is the impressive happy hour menu. The variety of food and drink options available during this time make it a great spot for a quick post-work date or meet up with friends. The prices are reasonable, and the quality of the drinks and snacks during happy hour definitely exceeded my expectations. One of my favorite things on the regular menu is the salad with chickpeas-- though I recommend adding an additional protein for it to be filling. The ambiance also noteworthy, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere. The staff is always friendly and attentive, adding to the overall positive experience. Conejo doesn't operate on the same plane as most Mexican-American restaurants. This is authentic Mexican food and my goodness it's glorious. The margaritas here are amazing and made strong. The broccoli tacos, fantastic. Enchiladas verde, great. I guess they cheat a little bit by having vegan chorizo, but I do believe the vegan chorizo I believe to be housemade - it doesn't taste like others I've had and that's a good thing. The rice, mmmmm. The real star though was the queso fundido with roasted peppers. That's an absolute must have. I also loved the green salsa and the hottest (red) salsa they provided. You'll like the mild one if you're a fan of mole, but I personally need to be in the mood for that flavor profile. Fair portion sizes for the price. I'm getting hungry again just thinking about it. 5/11/2022 Love the location and the vibe; energetic & trendy. Our first visit to Conejo will definitely not be the last. Service was lovely and timely, although our server may have needed to stay on top of recent menu changes. Now to the food......the menu looked fun and lended to our enthusiasm to try several dishes. The Queso Fundido with Chorizo was underwhelming.. tortilla chips were tasty but the queso fundido was more of a broiled cheese on top of unseasoned ground meat. Beef taquitos..meh! Nothing special ......needed a wow or zing element. Tostada de Pescado... people! You MUST have this DIVINE dish!! Tuna sashimi on tostadas with a flavor combination that was unbeatable!! Our group thought either the addition of fried hibiscus or crispy leek (or both!) made this sashimi dish stand out! We will come back again and again for that unique flavor combo. Tacos- we tried the carnitas and the grilled short rib. Both were tasty but not memorable. Las Costras- we tried the hangar steak/ bacon and also the rotisserie pork/pineapple. Both were DELICIOUS! and we would definitely order again. Last but not least- we tried the soft serve Mexican chocolate ice cream topped with caramel and strawberry compote. Our table was divided on the ice cream flavor.. I would label it more toward a/ semi/dark chocolate flavor but enjoyed it unlike others in my party. The strawberry compote topping was tasty and hopefully homemade, but the caramel tasted more like butter. I'm giving two stars simply because the service was wonderful. Our waitress was very sweet and attentive. The ambiance was nice, but very much NOT traditional. It was just... whitewashed Mexican decor. Cute, but unexpected. This also raised some red flags about how authentic the food was going to be the moment we walked in. We ordered chips and queso, it was nontraditional but pleasant. In our opinion, it was not as good as traditional chips and queso, but still pleasant. Everything went severely downhill once we got our entrees. We got quesabirria tacos and baja shrimp tacos. There's only two tacos per plate with no sides included. I kid you not, the tacos were SO SMALL. They could've fit in the palm of my boyfriend's hand. The flavor was good, but it was genuinely three bites per taco and then they were gone. The sides were A DISASTER. I got arroz verde and they were genuinely mush. I could've not chewed at all and been fine. They were so bad that we got them sent back and refunded. My boyfriend got this "Mexican spaghetti" that he equated to someone's random overcooked leftover spaghetti with a tiny bit of sour cream and parmesan cheese on top. It was cursed. We got refunded for that too. Now let me clear some things up -- my boyfriend and I have a high appreciation for all cuisine, especially Mexican cuisine. I rarely ever write reviews, but this was just NOT it. Being a Hispanic myself, I was so incredibly disappointed at the food. I could also tell that the Mexican family sitting near us was disappointed as well. 4.5 stars. As a native Angeleno that now lives in Richmond, VA I get a little confused about how things are on menus here. I guess I'm so accustomed to traditional Mexican and I am 100% to blame for not reading through the fine print on the menu but when I saw "Cochinita", my assumption was that I was getting suckling roasted pork tacos. When I ordered "Pastor", tacos, I ended up with chicken and not traditional pork. Totally my bad for not reading the fine print and just skimming through the dish titles but I have never in my life heard of a Cochinita Tuna Taco. Maybe change the menu name to Tuna Pibil? The word Cochinita literally translates into baby pig. So when you're ordering, read the description of the taco, under the name of the taco, word for word. And before you drink margaritas! Otherwise, if you are drinking and chatting with friends, you might just skim the titles and end up with a chicken pastor taco and a Tuna Cochinita Pibil taco. The service was incredible, we couldn't have asked for a nicer server who went above and beyond, even though I was dumb and assumed what would come in my tacos. Again, don't skim the title, read the fine print because Cochinita does not mean Suckling Pig on this menu, you will get a Tuna taco! Salsa trio- would love a little more sabor and a little less heat in each salsa. The heat level was consistent in all 3, there wasn't much noticeable difference in the burn. I would've liked just a little more sabor in all 3. The drinks were tasty and cold. Frozen Coconut Margarita is definitely what you need on a summer Friday night. All in all, amazing! Just so confused about the Cochinita Tuna and Chicken Pastor. There is ample parking in the back of the building. Y'all need to keep hand soap in the restrooms, please. We came here for a long lunch with friends and had great service with Jordan. We started with the chips, salsa, guacamole, and the taquitos. I think the taquitos were the highlight, both the meat and potato ones. We tried a few different cocktails, the blood orange drinks, the "spicy" margarita, the corona with the lime juice and salt rim. Our mains were good but the enchiladas were lacking flavor (chicken felt like it had no taste) and we often went a while without anyone bussing our table and with a group of 5 our table got full fast. I am actually obsessed with this place. There are a lot of places that serve food of this style. Call it Tex Mex, perhaps there is a better name. However, this by far the freshest, most reasonably priced, most delicious around. Plus the atmosphere is delightful, parking is fairly easy, the staff is friendly, the cocktails are nice, and just YUM. You can sit at the bar after shopping at nearby boutiques or just come in and sit at a table and make it THE destination. I don't want to say negatives, but having tried competitors that are in this same vein, the bright and airy atmosphere alone wins. Then, there's the tasty trio of salsas (tiny but that smoky one - so unique!) with chips you receive which are also delicious. Each entrée I have ordered has always been uniquely flavored and everything is fresh! I also love it that the food is not just smothered in cheese and sauces. I have tried to like this restaurant over three visits but I have yet to find a good menu choice. The food just isn't that good. The salad is pretty much lettuce with very few other veggies and a bland dressing. The chips are thick and hard. The menu says complimentary salsa but it's a teaspoon.
