For a night out with friends we decided to try Conejo after seeing the strong reviews. The decor inside is beautiful. The margarita was delicious and fresh although I would order it without salt in the future. The servers were great, very attentive and enjoyable! We had the Queso Fundido to start with a mix of flour and corn tortillas. The three salsas were all tasty. For entrees we had Gobernador, Baja, de brocoli and de Carnitas. All of it was amazing. Our server was very professional and attentive. They were having some issues with their tablets being able to place orders, but a manager promptly came by to apologize for the delay in receiving our drinks and appetizers and let us know what was going on, which I really appreciated. The salsa was good, the chips could have used a little bit of salt. I was disappointed we never received the salsa trio, so we didn't get to try the other house salsas. We enjoyed the taquitos and our tacos, which were flavorful, came out very hot, and tasted nice and fresh. The ambience is really cute; it's a beautiful, modern restaurant space with plenty of seating. They are incredibly busy though, and we've discovered it's tough to get a weekend reservation if you don't call in advance. The only odd thing about the decor is that they have large curtains inside the front door, which they had pulled part way shut when we entered, and even further shut when we exited. I'm not sure if they're trying to stop cold air drafts, but I've never seen that approach before... it was strange. Wow, what a great experience! Okay, it doesn't hurt that it was our first date in a while! We came during late happy hour. I ordered a frozen blood orange margarita, which I really enjoyed and it was strong enough for me to feel (I may be a lightweight). My husband ordered a draft (and another). The beer selection wasn't huge, but it's Mexican, so it was perfectly acceptable. We tried chips (small charge) with salsa trio (complimentary). The chips are clearly homemade. They are thick and a good vehicle for salsas. I really enjoyed one of the salsa (black) and the others were good. The tuna tostado were so pretty and tasted fresh. We ordered a chicken taco and barbacoa taco from the HH menu. I think that is a small discount, but biggest benefit was trying a variety of options. Barbacoa was the better of those. We also ordered the brisket street tacos; yum!! My favorite item of the meal was the sweet potato side item, OMG, so good!! Although we were super full, we still tried the tres leches and glad we did. The raspberry compote made it different. Atmosphere is good, very cute and hip and great service. Great Mexican without the oils and feeling of "heaviness" afterwards! My dad and I were waiting for my mom to finish off at Dry Bar and we were starting to get hungry, so we decided to stop by. We got mini plates and shared them all - super satisfying. It was a bit earlier in the day, so we unfortunately did not try their cocktails but next time! For a starter, we shared their tostadas de Camarón negro. It came with three different sauces - 1) dried tomato 2) green chili 3) some red basil habanero. The third was SO SPICY. The kick was amazing. Then, we got their plato redondo. That was the best! I especially loved the sweetness of the creme de leite and avocado. The shrimp were so small and cute! OMG can I say how much I loved everything about this place. When you walk in everyone was super nice and happy to help. The restaurant was absolutely beautiful. The decor and all of the real plants inside and outside where won me over. We sat inside but I am definitely going back to sit outside and enjoy the view while I try some of their other dishes along with a margarita. I ordered the Baja Shrimp tacos and they were amazing. They had a roasted jalapeno aioli, pickled cabbage, and pico de gailo on it. Ya'll I never had pickled cabbage and it was soooooo good; next time I want some extra on the side The complimentary homemade dipping sauces where so good. Conejo is a bit Americanized, upscale Mexican food. Definitely different offerings than your typical Mexican restaurant. It's not the most authentic Mexican food ever, but it's good and the drinks make up for it. It is usually a lively environment with great vibes. The servers are very kind and attentive. We ordered the: - Queso Fundido - the chorizo had some sort of sweet spice which made it cheesy, sweet, spicy, and all around amazing. This is probably my favorite thing we ordered. - Gobernador - grilled shrimp and veggies with cheese and flour tortilla. YUM. - Tacos - we ordered a couple with meat, and one broccoli - Horchata soft serve - Tres leches - this one was lemon flavored. Wow! Wow wow WOW! When I saw all the 5 star reviews on Yelp (and from Elites too), I knew I had to head over here ASAP. I can confidently say they have some of the tastiest tacos I've had in Richmond. I made a reservation for two on a Monday night (yes, you need a reservation for a Monday it's that good). I'd highly recommend it for a date. The interior design was very cute and trendy. I came here with a friend I hadn't seen in a while. It was a great place to catch up and share some tasty food. Here's what we tried: Las Tres Salsas: This comes with all meals. All three salsas have a nice kick. The salsa roja, the hottest of the three, had a nice rise to the heat. I found it to be really spicy. My friend who has a really high spice tolerance thinks it could've been spicier. I love how different each one was. Ceviche Clásico: This had a kick I didn't expect. I'm a sucker for ceviche and this one was pretty tasty! La Milpa Salad: A very generous serving of salad. My friend really enjoyed this and loved adding some of the verde tatemada salsa on top. Tacos de Cochinita Atun: YUM! I love the way the tuna is prepared. Simple, but wonderful because of its simplicity. Plus pickled red onion is always a good idea. Tacos de Carnitas: WOW! I took a bite of this and had the goofiest smile on my face for three minutes straight. I felt like I was in taco heaven. The thicker slices of the cheshire pork shoulder were juicy and the thinner slices added a nice crunch. Flan: A lot creamier than other flans I've had. It had a nice kick too. Tres Leches: Light, but creamy. Tasty with a fun addition of raspberry. The environment was just perfect for me. They have a nice outdoor patio. I loved our waitress. On my fiancee's never ending quest to find good fish tacos in RVA, and my general conquest to try any good Mexican good in general, we ended up at Conejo tonight. Sooooo, wow, just wow, really. --Food: We ordered a sampling of many different items, including tacos, sopes, chips and salsa, rice, and dessert. I also really love that they label their menu for gluten free items for people allergies and conditions like myself. - Baja fish tacos: A fried fish taco with spicy aioli, cabbage, and pico in a homemade corn tortilla. My partner got it without the pico and absolutely loved them. She said they were one of the best fish tacos she's had and they did look incredibly good. - Carnitas (roasted pork) taco: Probably my favorite. The pork was just so flavorful and moist! I would definitely get a whole order of these. - Cochinita Atun (tuna) taco: Really, really good. The tuna was very flavorful and had a nice spice on it. If you want a great fish taco but can't have breaded fish or just prefer a lighter flavor, these are great. - Sope with rotisserie chicken: For those unfamiliar, these are small masa (corn) patties, fried I believe, in which other toppings like beans, cheese, meat, and lettuce are eaten. Basically little edible plates. I think the ratio of lettuce is a little too high, albeit the lettuce was fresh and tasty, but overall these were really good! - Salsa and chips: I'm not going to say these are something they're not. They're chips and salsa. If you've had chips and salsa before, you've had these. Don't get me wrong, they were good. - Arroz Verde (green rice): A nice rice side dish with a hint of pepper and cilantro. Not super interesting, but if you want a side of rice, it's good! - Soft serve ice cream dessert: I liked this a lot more than I was expecting to! I got the Horchata flavor, basically a cinnamon milk flavor, and she got the Mexican chocolate. Very smooth and very flavorful! We got a side of strawberries and walnuts, which honestly it didn't even need, but was even better with. --Cost: Each individual item or order of items is pretty inexpensive, about $5-$10 depending on what you get. We ended up getting a sampling of a bunch of things and our bill came to $50. So, not the cheapest, but everything was delicious and well worth. --Atmosphere: Honestly the place is pretty chic. I wouldn't say suit and tie, it's still relatively casual, but everything is very neat and orderly and laid out very professionally. It's a nice place. There's a nice indoor seating area, an outdoor patio with an awning, and some outside seats in the open air. --Service: Very good. Very attentive. Staff was informed on menu items and checked with kitchen on some specific allergy related questions I had. Great experience all around. -- Downsides?: Honestly, I don't like the napkins. "The napkins!?" you say? For some reason the napkins are incredibly large, thick napkins that feel almost like a towel. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with them necessarily, but I think I would have preferred a smaller more absorbent napkin. But we're getting pretty specific with this one, huh? --Overall: If it wasn't clear, we love Conejo. We're already planning and talking about what we're going to try next. We went to Conejo recently for a Friday night dinner. First, I definitely recommend a reservation. This place was hopping! Thankfully with a reservation we were seated pretty quickly. The decor is cute with a definite beachy sort of vibe or color scheme -- lots of pastels. For dinner, we ordered the Sopes and queso appetizers. The chips that come with the queso are nice and thick. You also get three salsas to try for the table. My favorite was the dark red one which was smoky without too much spice. For dinner I ordered the de suadero or brisket tacos. I cannot recommend these enough, this was my favorite menu item. I also tried the shrimp/gobernador costra, very yummy! Drinks: I had a very tasty frozen Paloma, not too sweet but a nice kick (4/5). Definitely refreshing. Food: this will probably be an unpopular opinion: I wasn't a fan of what I tried. Shrimp taco 3/5 it was very fresh but fell short on flavors I've had (prepared) better, missed the wow factor (it was a bit better after adding the all three salsas). We tried Conejo for the first time today. The ambiance is immediately inviting. The inside is bright, open, and clean. I like this instead of the trendy día de los muertos ambiance a lot of Mexican restaurants are trying to replicate. That is starting to feel played out, while this is refreshing. The service was good but a little slow. The prices seemed more reasonable than what we've been seeing lately and that too, was refreshing. Reasonable prices allowed us to try drinks and several appetizers, along with our entrées. For a drink, I ordered a michelada. I like Valentina hot sauce but in this case, it was really overpowering. I prefer a traditional michelada with a little Clamato. But if you like Valentina and don't mind the absence of Clamato, this drink may be for you. For appetizers, we ordered the guac, queso fundido con chorizo, and chicken enchiladas. All of the appetizers were fresh and good but none were exceptional. The chip situation is weird. Before you order anything, they bring you a plate with a small amount of their three salsas. But they don't bring chips, so it seems pointless. For appetizers that come with chips, like the guac and queso fundido, they only give you what amounts to about two tortillas cut in half or in quarters. My kids act like they're competing for food so my husband and I barely got one chip in for each appetizer. We ordered tacos, esquites, and a sweet potato side for our main course. The tortillas are homemade with blue masa so that was nice. My husband preferred the al pastor, my son liked the suadero, my daughter liked the birria, and I really enjoyed the fried haddock. We all really liked our tacos but none of us loved them. However, my husband and I did love the sweet potato side. It was original and flavorful. That side alone might be a reason to return. Great, fairly new restaurant that I had to check out. Came for dinner with my best friend - she made reservation a week before just to make sure we get a table bc this place is busy even on Tuesday evening. Space is open, modern with cool vibe but loud and noisy so it was hard to hear and talk even though we were seated at a fairly small table for two. We had some issues with table space since they have shareable small plates so it was hard to fit everything at the same time. Our waiters was young but knowledgeable and personal and during dinner she checked on us fairly often making sure we are doing ok. For starters we ordered queso fundido with roasted peppers - it was not a runny dip that you would expect but rather a chunk of cheese melted over roasted peppers that at first was soft to dip chip in but as it cooled down it became solid and we had to use fork and knife to cut a piece and put on a tortilla chip. Not my fave! As far for tortilla chips they were tasty but quite thick and hard! We also had guacamole which was pretty good, smooth with some chunks and nicely seasoned. Now about cocktails WOW those were delicious definitely recommend trying something! We had Gloria and La Pluma both slightly sweet, citrusy just enough boozy that you feel alcohol but it's not overshadowing everything else! For our main meal we shared shrimp tostadas - crispy corn tortilla topped with shrimp, chipotle sauce, guacamole and cherry tomatoes onions cilantro and lime, it was very good and not overly spicy. We also shared brisket tacos - also good but nothing to rave about, my biggest issue tortillas were pretty thick and a bit under in my opinion. They also bring you trio of salsas for the table on the house - salsa matcha, verde and roja, all with a kick but roja being the hottest so try before you put it on your food to see what works for you best! We saved some space for dessert so we tried flan and Mexican chocolate soft serve with added candied walnuts. Flan was delish, fluffy and caramel Lu not too sweet and ice cream was pretty good and heavy on chocolate flavor, candied walnuts added nice sweetness to chocolate bitterness! The level of delivery on brand here is epic, starting with the best margarita I've had since my last trip to Mexico, then continuing on through the endless parade of delights from guacamole, to seafood cocteles, to salads, to tacos, to desserts (oh, that flan) - this is a place worth multiple visits, since you're going to want to try everything. They make their own tortillas from masa they grind themselves, which is a dedication to flavor and tradition not seen in many Mexican restaurants even in Mexico. Last night my husband and I went and were very excited to try the new seasonal items that were highlighted on the website. Unfortunately, none of them were on the slimmed down menu we were offered, and the waitress explained that the menu is in transition. So we had tacos, queso, a rice bowl, and sweet potatoes. Sad to say that this was the dinner my Mexican wife was looking most forward to on a recent trip to Richmond. We came 20 min early for our reservation and were seated promptly but at a high table by the bar. We ordered tacos, mole, "chiles rellenos" and a steak costra. The masa in both the tacos and the costra was amazing, some of the best tortillas I have had in a long time. Steak on the costra was cooked well. Birria taco was pretty good as well. The suadero and carnitas tacos were a bit salty. The mole was spicy which masked the chocolate and smokey notes. The masa in the tamale was very dense as well, not bad, but not something I have had before when it comes to mole. All 4 dishes came at the same time. All got cold (other than the chile rellenos which is a cold dish) but they were also served fairly cold. The mole was taken back when I complained but still was not super warm. Four of us had lunch in this new spot. We made reservations but it may not have been necessary as they were not packed at lunch. But this is a popular spot and dinner reservations would be recommended. There is some street parking and there is parking behind the front section of the building. We were seated right away. Service was quite good and the food comes out fast. We had some chips and guacamole as an appetizer. It was really good. My wife and I ordered the baja taco which is fried cod on a small tortilla. You get two per order and can add a 3rd for half price. The servings are not large, but it was enough for lunch... Not sure if dinner is the same serving size or not. They also had green rice... which is something they make there. It is rice mixed/steamed with peppers. It was very good!! It is a little expensive. We split the two appetizers and meal..
