Holy smokes! Visiting friends in RVA, we are eager to sample the food scene. Busy place and they were thrilled that we scored a reservation for a large party. The waitress (Camra?) was super nice and thoughtfully visited both ends of the table to get the orders correct. The gang started with some gorgeous creative cocktails. I had a lovely mint tea (hot, Tazo). We shared guacamole which certainly has a kick! The chips were crispy, thicker and prefect for the dip and tasting the trio of sauces. The regulars highly recommended the tacos and the sides. I had the broccoli; crisp, partly blackened, a bit light on the seasoning but blossomed with the darkest red sauce. The rare taco, amazing, truly rare. Seared on one side, the seared side very spicy. I had the beet salad side. Small cubes of beets in a creative sauce. Restaurant week! Popped in on a Wednesday night and the place is hopping. Was able to quickly grab a seat at the communal table. Perfect view of the whole place, the kitchen and the bar. My waiter was pleasant and attentive. Given the loud space he probably heard my order wrong. For appetizer I asked for the carne apache but the scallops showed up. He offered to remedy it right away. I was curious about chocolate salsa macha and I like the flavorful oil and crunchy chocolate chips. The texture of the beef is chewier than I'd like but it was good with the chips. Next I had the trout. It was pink almost like salmon. I love that it was not over cooked so it was tender and flaky. I particularly enjoyed the cauliflower and mushrooms in the sauce. Definitely cleaned the plate. Ended the meal with a unique flan over flourless cake. It was not too sweet, even though I would've been happy with just flan. I highly enjoyed my first visit to Conejo. The restaurant is open, airy, and spacious, immediately giving tropical vibes upon entrance. I started off with a coconut margarita which was pretty strong but delicious! I also tried the coconut margarita mixed with blackberry, both were great. The salsa trio was different from other more traditional Mexican restaurants but I enjoyed trying it. The darker red salsa reminded me of chili crunch oil. For my main I ordered the Gobernador Las Costras, which was described as an open face quesadilla by our server. It was absolutely delicious and I loved trying something new - I had never heard of this dish before. I also ordered the Baja tacos which were phenomenal. Conejo is a cute contemporary take on Mexican food with a nice ambience but a bit to be desired. They bring to the table a set of three house salsas-one of the meal highlights. All incredible, fresh and with flavor-should have asked for a refill. We tried the frozen blood orange margarita, a winner considering frozen drinks rarely have decent alcohol presence but this was spot on and tasty-borderline dangerous. We placed an order of chips and guacamole-a basic guacamole (no complaints) but the star being thicker than usual tortilla chips that could hold their weight for proper scooping activity. (Add the salsas, you won't regret it). We went for brunch which is VERY much lunch featuring two breakfast options. We had the breakfast burrito with brisket and the greens and grains bowl with chicken added on. The burrito came with sour cream and guacamole. While all the components were good on their own, the construction of the burrito meant minimal meat included and an arrangement of ingredients that left for real mushy bites (see the avocado, beans, scrambled eggs, soft potatoes and melted cheese texture all meeting one another). I definitely needed some pico de gallo to cut the flavors and add some crunch of the onion. Brisket was a bit dry. The greens and grains bowl was well dressed, had large pieces of chicken. Not much to critique. Don't know if ordering tacos would have been the better bet or honestly coming for dinner. Their dinner menu looked more appetizing but didnt fit into our schedule. Service was alright. First set of utensils at the table featured stained napkins and the bench was covered in chips. There was a wall of incredible sculptures, alebrijes, fridas and more. What a great evening! I run a ladies dinner party group and our March outing was at Conejo. Everyone had the best time! While gathering the troops, I enjoyed their coconut margarita, which was the perfect way to start our evening. It was probably one of the best drinks I have ever had. We started off with some guac and queso (freshly home made chips too!) for the table while we admired the menu and attempted to figure out what to try. I decided to have the Alambre and a side of the Esquites (street corn). The alambre was beautifully prepared and was absolutely delicious. I especially liked the home made tortillas and the various of moles. I like it so much, I ordered the exact same thing to take home to DH. Others at the table had a variety of beautiful looking dishes, including salads and variety of tacos and mains. Everyone was very happy with their orders and proclaimed the evening to one of our better outings. Service was terrific - kind, hospitable and without being intrusive. I look forward to returning! Absolutely delicious and a rockstar waitress named Courtney. The scallops were the best I've ever had over deliciously spicy squid ink noodles. Then we had one of the quesadillas with caramelized cheese and mushrooms. I thought that was very good but of the dishes maybe my least favorite but still very good. Then we had a delicious chicken marinated in very nice spices with a mole sauce and potatoes. Totally delicious. I took a group of dear friends for an afternoon holiday lunch celebration. The waitress, Savannah was delightful and seemed happy to exceed our needs. Everyone found a tasty lunch and it seemed to be a "Richmond" take on fine Tex-Mex menu. My guest liked his cumber margarita a lot. I'm a little over hipster tortilla chips that are just half a corn tortilla and not cut up - these were REALLY crunchy and almost a little hard? The guacamole was good but a small portion. The salsas that come with the food were good and overall the food was decent. Presentation was nice. My partner got the juevos rancheros and they were a little odd - the corn tortillas were soft in the middle and just a little too crunchy on the outside. I opted for a burrito and thought it was good. I didn't LOVE this place but would venture to try it again. It's a nicely priced menu, adorable venue, and overall good food just nothing spectacular. I'll preface I'm well traveled (all of Central America but Belize) and my wife has lived in Honduras, Mexico, and Venezuela, Japan, and the U.S. Been here twice. Inside was nice 1st visit, but outside was awesome--great vibe either way so ambiance and atmosphere are pretty and pleasant. This time, I had the caeasar salad (kale) with carnitas--omg, best carnitas ever, crisp and moist. My wife got the chicken--same perfection and mushroom beds were fun to dig into. We love the trio of hot sauces, but they are hot on a VA scale, not Mexico, Indian, Thai, or silly Ghost scale. Beans and rice--excellent. You really need the hot sauce trio to play w all your food, not just a chips and salsa thing, as these are amazing flavor vehicles by themselves despite the tamed heat for VA paletes. Previously we had tried the Queso Flamaedo (excellent) and the fish--amazing special--and taquitos...the later was ok but we loved the rest and had to come back for my bday. Service was stellar. Arrived during Happy Hour on a Friday. Was surprised to see that there was only two tables occupied, and a few seats at the bar. Throughout our visit, the restaurant did fill up a little more, but was never near full. The decor is fun and colorful and the restaurant has many windows letting in a lot of natural light which gives it an airy feel. We tried several things off of the Happy Hour menu. I had the Paloma to drink, and my husband had the Margarita, his first was classic with house tequila, and his second and third were with mezcal which he preferred. I liked the flavor of both cocktails, but they were very weak. We also tried the Taquitos (with beef) off the Happy Hour menu which were our favorite thing we tried (along with the house chips and salsa appetizer). The complimentary salsa trio was good also, I specifically really enjoyed the hottest one (orange). From the main menu, we tried the fish tacos, shrimp tacos, and tuna tostada appetizer. We also tried the Aguachile from the specials menu. The tuna tostada appetizer was strange both in presentation and in flavor/taste. The "dried" hibiscus is burnt and looks like dirt atop of fried leeks which are reminiscent of worms. It tasted overpowering and not in a good way. It's almost like too many components and too much "creativity" that it was not enjoyable in our opinion. The Aguachile provided a similar experience as it was overwhelmingly acidic and sour. It was edible but it could've been better balanced and dialed back as it pertained to certain components/ingredients. I tried the fish tacos because I saw many reviews that suggested that they were a favorite for Conejo diners. Unfortunately, I did not agree with the masses. The fish itself had a lot of blood lines which made it have a more fishy flavor than fish tacos I have had in the past. I liked the toppings, but that was about it. I didn't like the corn tortillas, although I typically don't, so I asked to switch it out for a flour tortilla (after trying it with the corn, mostly because I forgot to ask) and was surprised that the flour tortilla was wheat and not white. My husband did really enjoy the shrimp tacos but I did not personally try them. Overall, it just felt like the food was trying to be something it wasn't and it was just falling short. Sometimes, it's okay to just have what guests are going to want and fall back a little on the creativity. The flavors lacked balance most of all. Our server was nice and we didn't wait very long for anything. Multiple other staff members briefly checked on us throughout our visit so it was nice to feel that the team genuinely cared about our experience. I would share them here, but they don't do justice at all to this beautiful thing. - Alambre costra - a grilled hanger steak with peppers, nopalitos, cheese, a lovely sauce, basically an entire plate of "yes". - Tres leches cake - a perfect end to our meal. - Oaxacan Old Fashioned - great bar program here, seeing what apparently is a clarified version of this drink was fun. It was delicious and well-executed. - the Churros were fun and described to us in reverent tones, but this batch seemed a bit overdone. I'd still give them a shot in the future, but compared to the tres leches cake there's a clear winner for me. With only one visit, all we have is a first impression, and it was dazzling. Nothing on the menu so far has been a miss and we have tried many things, though the suadero taco, the Kale Caesar, and the queso have stood out as favorites. I absolutely love being able to mix and match tacos, a great way to get some variety and try something new. Plus, pro-tip, that birria broth is good with any of the tacos in a selection. The service here has always been really friendly as well. The place is clean and inviting, and I just love the way it feels. Came to Conejo with my brother and partner for dinner on a Sunday. Their patio seating is gorgeous when the weather is nice and the inside ambiance is also lovely! We shared potato taquitos, esquites, broccoli tacos, and this black beans-noodle rice dish thing. Heads up though, definitely not your typical Mexican spot - it's more of an upscale small plates spot. The broccoli tacos were a bit dry and kind of a miss. Esquites and noodles were decent. Felt I needed to write this review to give a balanced review of this place since nearly everyone gives this a 5 star review. To start, my wife LOVES this place (tuna tacos and coconut margaritas) and my in laws are obsessed with this place too especially the coconut margaritas - the coconut margaritas are too sweet for my taste however to have more than a sip or 2. I've been here probably 7-8 times and I keep trying to find a way to describe why it is just OKAY for me. I think in the end the food is just really DRY tasting or too crunchy/overcooked. Shredded chicken - dry and no flavor. Chips - too thick and crunchy and not befitting anything other than ceviche. Queso fundido is a joke - melted cheese with no flavor - you already have queso tejano on the menu. Shredded beef taquitos - too crunchy and beef dry almost like Jerky. Horchata cheesecake - dry and crunchy as well along with being too salty and the ratio of crust is too high for the amount of cheesecake. Churros - too crunchy especially with large girth (no jokes) being something really hard you are trying to shove into a gaping mouth ...and the chocolate sauce tasted funny. Cochinita pibil and black refried beans - dry AF - like you could flip the plate over and the beans would stick to it. I am convinced the chef thinks grease/juice is the devil or maybe is just obsessed with their '3 sauces' that they give small servings of to attempt to save the moisture level of the dishes. About the sauces the red and green are different for sure but both have about the same somewhat high spice level and none of the actual food coming out is spicy so they attack the dishes the same for the most part so they don't really stick apart and then the 3rd is a really oily chili sauce for some random reason when the whole menu is oil adverse you have half this sauce be made of oil like it needs to go on french bread or something and get soaked in. None of the sauces stick out for me. With that said, their Paloma is REALLY good as is their sope but you have to go with Chorizo get to a little flavor/moisture on the sope. Quesabirra tacos decent too but you only get a literal half shot glass of consume for 3 tacos. Green Rice - mushy and not much taste - too one note. Portions are small - more like tapas style. Every other time I come here they make a basic mistake in service like bringing out the wrong dessert, looks like they stiffed me on the caramel sauce on the cheesecake which might have added enough moisture, or bringing out 1 tuna taco instead of 2... although the wait staff is very nice. So yeah, for me it is just OKAY especially when you are talking about $100 out the door for 2 people if you get a couple drinks. read more

Fantastic spot near the acclaimed "Avenues". Always bustling without being overcrowded or feeling out of control. Menu is superb. Cocktails are craft, crisp and refreshing. I've tried to make a point to sample everything on the menu. While I haven't yet achieved that, I've never been disappointed. It's admittedly difficult to break away from the tuna tostadas and carnitas tacos. House-made tortillas are perfect. The tacos come in sets of two but you can order a third for half the price and can even mix & match taco flavors. Lastly, I can't encourage you to get the churros enough! Light, bright, fun and contemporary Mexican atmosphere, the executive chef is from Mexico City and you can tell. Since opening, Conejo has risen to the top of my list for Mexican cuisine in Richmond. The menu goes beyond the usual authentic staples, infusing flavor and textures. I have loved everything I've tried here. The service is stellar, and the interior is colorful and bright. The menu is simple to digest, and there is a lot of potential for sharing if that's your thing! My favorite is their mix and match tacos that allow you to get a spread of different proteins. My girls and I decided to grab a bite to eat at Conejo. This place definitely fit the hang out ladies vibe we were looking for. They offered a nice covered seating area outside, so we took advantage of that. The inside was cute, but definitely packed. The menu selection was decent. I ordered three tacos (the third was an extra charge) and a pretty pricey drink. My two Baja tacos were made with crispy fish, roasted jalapeño aioli, pickled cabbage (this could have been left out ), and pico de gallo. The de Carnitas taco I had was slow roasted cheshire pork shoulder topped with an avocado salsa, onions, and cilantro. Each taco was delicious (minus the pickled cabbage), however afterwords I was still very hungry! After paying $50 for just myself I would expect to be a little full or at least satisfied! I ordered some churros as well and they were hard. Customer service wasn't bad, but also wasn't anything special. They did the minimal and that was pretty much it. While plenty of neighborhood places serving classic Tex Mex fare reside in the Richmond metro area, few that focus on more modern flavors exist. Furthermore, Mexican places that have a decent, outing-worthy ambiance also remain elusive. Conejo remarkably offers both contemporary Mexican flavors in pleasant surrounds, and does to great benefit. My family and I dined at Conejo for a recent Saturday brunch. We dug the bright, sunny ambiance of the restaurant that felt modern and fun. A large, shaded patio is available for outdoor dining, but we opted for an indoor table. We started with the esquites and the guacamole as appetizers. The guacamole was fresh, but could have benefited from a bit more lime and salt. The tortilla chips served alongside arrived freshly fried, and carried a pleasantly nutty and toasty corn flavor from the house ground masa. We dug the better seasoned esquites which possessed the perfect balance of creamy mayo and cheese cut by lime and chili. I sampled a decent cross section of Conejo's brunch menu and enjoyed each bite. My personal favorite was my own order: a classic but quality breakfast burrito stuffed with tender brisket, fluffy eggs, fried potatoes, and beans and wrapped in a flaky, homemade flour tortilla. My father's chilaquiles offered plenty of those great corn tortilla chips perfectly bathed in tangy green enchilada sauce and topped with tender, pulled chicken. The enfrijoladas my brother in law ordered won praise for a rich, creamy black bean sauce and tasty tortillas. My wife's chorizo and egg tacos, while on the basic side, benefited from the great corn tortillas and well seasoned sausage. Special mentioned should be made for the three, complimentary homemade salsas on offer. Each variety, which included a rich salsa macha, a tangy verde, and a spicy roja, nicely perked up the flavors of the food while being good enough to eat on their own. On a similarly good note, our service ran smoothly. Despite the restaurant getting somewhat busy by the time our meal concluded, our waiter remained consistently attentive and hospitable. Amazingly, the most expensive item we ordered was $15 and our bill totaled just under $100 even after tip. For five people to dine for less than $20 a head for quality food, great ambiance, and solid service is a steal. As such, Conejo earns four stars for their modern Mexican offerings, and a fifth for value, hospitality, and vibes. read more

Everything was great! We enjoyed all the food and drinks. The fish taco was my favorite. You have to get a dessert, you can't go wrong with any of them. The service was top notch. The place itself is beautiful and super clean. Reservations can be made on Resy. I highly recommend going during happy hour from 4:30-6pm M-F. For a night out with friends we decided to try Conejo after seeing the strong reviews. The decor inside is beautiful. The margarita was delicious and fresh although I would order it without salt in the future. The servers were great, very attentive and enjoyable! We had the Queso Fundido to start with a mix of flour and corn tortillas. The three salsas were all tasty. For entrees we had Gobernador, Baja, de brocoli and de Carnitas. All of it was amazing. We were all very surprised at how delicious it was. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more
