This place does best for the latter. Took us a few minutes to order because our original orders no longer worked as they no longer make milkshakes from hard ice cream (soft serve only), limiting the flavors and making for a soupy milkshake. The "only 8" was fine! Cool option (only 8 Ingredients, feels better mentally idk). OMG! I'm from San Diego, CA and I visit this part of NY state multiple times/year to visit family. I honestly have to say: of all the ice cream shops I've visited across the USA, honestly (sincerely) this one is the best. Ice cream is outstanding. Selection, well, what can I say? Sitting right on the Catskill Creek in Catskill, NY, with a name like Cone E, you know I wanted in- even if it meant messing up my 99% no dairy-no egg-Vegan regimen. But hey...I'm human. The flavors are straight, but Cone E primps them out with sprinkles, Hot Fudge caramel, Brownie crumbles, Heath Bar and a few others. Ice cream is creamy, thick and large. My medium Chocolate with Chocolate sprinkles in a wafer cone-cup was ok- just wished it had a stronger chocolate taste. Aside from Cone E's soft serve or hard ice cream, you can pick between Waffle, sugar or cake cone(?). And by the way, there are Dole flavors...so however you take yours, Cone E has your quick fix. After enjoying our long drive up north on a warm Saturday, this was a doable last-minute stop. Worth it? I got the mint chocolate chip & cookie dough ice cream. It was alright but it tasted store bought. I wish I looked at other reviews before coming here because I wanted homemade ice cream & this clearly wasn't it. I don't know why people are complaining about prices, a single scoop is $3.00 which in my opinion is fine. They didn't have the flavors written down anywhere & the employee had to list them out for us when we asked. They should consider posting them instead of people waiting to hear the days flavors when they can have it decided before they order. They also had a flavor called "trash can"--anyone can come up with a better name than that! I thought it was weird how the employees were writing down the order on a notepad. How hard is it to remember 2 flavors? By the time they finish writing the order down it could be out, but instead they had to make us wait an extra few minutes. I'm a patient person, but the fact that there was only one other family (who was being served by another employee) & I had to wait for my 2 flavors to come out is just ridiculous. The bathroom here is TERRIBLE. Do not go! First off, it was in another building not connected to the main building. Ok, that's fine. But the door had no locks & had a house door with see through glass! Weird. Then the bathroom itself had no toilet paper, paper towels, or soap. Gross. What a ripoff joint. A couple of cheesy circus tents with a few splintered old picnic tables, set up in a lot in the summertime, exempt from the expenses of rent, property taxes, A/C, restroom supplies, etc - so why the crazy high prices for such crappy food, then? Their average-tasting soft-serve cones are carefully structured to be totally hollow throughout (saves on ice cream, ya know), while crummy pre-packaged frozen fries and other worthless fat-laden carnival fare are lazily served up by the rudest servers you'll ever meet. And with so little maintenance necessary, why is the place so dirty? Get one of the little snot-nosed ice cream servers and stick a rag or a mop in her hand for the day instead. Even if she's just as lazy cleaning as she is at serving, at least there'll be fewer disgruntled customers who won't have to deal with her rudeness at the counter that day. While the ice cream is good, it's unfortunate that they do not require masks. I've been twice since re-opening and both times there were people ordering while NOT wearing masks. There was a young woman behind the counter wearing a mask and the owner was there also wearing a mask but took hers off to talk with someone not wearing one through the order window. Disappointing. The only reason I'm posting this review is because of the negative reviews that I saw. In fact I almost didn't go because of those reviews. First of all, let's start with the staff. They were incredibly nice and friendly. In fact so much so that I went twice in one day (we were staying just down the street and I'm an ice cream addict). I ordered a triple scoop cone and when it was brought to me I was told "hang on it's not finished" and the woman returned with a small plastic container with more ice cream. She said she wasn't able to fit everything on the cone and she apparently didn't want to short change me on my order. I went back later in the day to sample their soft serve ice cream. I didn't like the soft serve as much as the hard ice cream, however the service was just as friendly and I walked away with the largest soft serve cone I've ever seen. The prices range from $2-$8 so I'm not sure why people are saying the place is expensive. Hot dogs were $2.00 and a triple scoop cone was under four dollars and a soft serve cone with sprinkles that was so large I almost couldn't finish it was $4.50. Yes, this is more expensive than if you were going to go to a supermarket and buy a gallon of ice cream and put it into a cone in your kitchen but the point is they aren't going to sell you ice cream at a loss. It isn't a discount factory outlet for ice cream. It's a shop. They have rent to pay. So yes, this might be a few dollars more than buying ice cream on sale at Price Chopper, but compared to retail establishments that sell ice cream I'd say this is just normally priced ice cream. In any event, nice people and very generous portions. I'm glad I went. And if you go, get the hard serve not the soft serve. read more

If you are looking for excellent service and delicious ice cream, NEVER go to Cone E Island. I took a group order for my friends and decided to pick up ice cream. We ordered a couple shakes, a flurry, and a couple cups of Ice cream. This was my first experience ever going to this ice cream stand and it was horrifying, I have never seen an ice cream place be so run down and dirty. I looked past it because it is the only soft serve place in town that I know of. The first thing to come out was our Chocolate dipped cone.... they had not even started on our milkshakes yet at this point so by the time our order was completed it was just the chocolate shell and a puddle of ice cream underneath. everything else was going smooth after that... until I asked for spoons and straws to go with our ice cream, I replied that I needed enough for my order... and the girl behind the counter just looked at me with a blank stare. That was the end of my tragic event at their shoppe. Once I got back, everyone was checking their order. OUR FLURRY HAD NO OREOS IN IT. just whipped up ice cream....Mind you, the ice cream tasted like plastic. After all was said and done, not one, not two, but all of the people that ate ice cream that afternoon got extremely sick... AWESOME.
