I'm a novice biker, and these guys were super nice and helpful! I got a new bike and I love it. I was able to test drive a few and pick the right one for me. They have a range of choices and all the equipment you could need. When I was in the shop, a lot of people were coming in buying things and getting things fixed. I even made a friend in the store. I will never go to a different shop to get my bike repaired/tuned up. The service here is impeccable compared to other shops in Chicago. I went in to have basic things adjusted on my commuter and the guy spent 30 minutes on my bike immediately and refused to let me pay him. Other places would have charged me $15-$20. I also needed to replace the front derailleur on my road bike and they charged me $10 less than the part goes for online and will have it out by the next day even though they are slammed this weekend. I would highly recommend this place to anyone I come across. read more

The folks at Comrade are knowledgable, passionate about what they do, and (most important to me) enthusiastic to answer any and all questions--no matter how dumb--you might have about your bike. I swung in earlier today after having an issue with my rear tire, and was in-and-out in less than 5 minutes. Not only did they fix the problem, but gave me advice on how to avoid the problem in the future. I've been there many times and they've never nickel and dimed me on small repairs. I neglected my road bike since moving to Chicago in March by leaving it on my deck, exposed to the elements. It was a hot mess. Rusty chain, corroded cables, etc. The guys at Comrade were all-stars. Super friendly and nonjudgmental of my negligent ways. They fixed my bike and tuned it up for the summer. Great bike selection. Bought a new bike that I could only find here. I worked with Rawny who was great. He helped make sure the fit was great swapped out pedals and parts from my old bike. Wanted to get old bike cleaned to keep it functional and he suggested some great reasonably priced fixes to keep it going. I love Comrade! They do great, fast work at a fair price and there is no bike snobbery. They explain everything and do extra stuff just to be nice, like greasing your chain when they change a flat. I also went in there once prepared to pay for a full tune up and they did only what actually needed to be done, saving me about $50. They are just a really ethical, skilled group of workers, and they are always friendly and helpful. Going to bike shops can be sometimes be a negative experience for women, but that is never the case at Comrade, they treat everyone with respect. I won't go anywhere else! read more

I went to Comrade Cycles to get a basic tune up. I have to admit I picked Comrade pretty arbitrarily (because of the name), but I'm so glad that I did!! Everyone in the shop was very kind, and after my chain was cleaned and my tires were inflated, I was out of the shop in under ten minutes. I have dealt with Bailey, Jessie and Steve. They are all great guys. Never too busy to handle a walk in. Budget conscious for those who don't have thousands to spend on a bike but love biking none-the-less. My bike was stolen and they had an exact replacement built and ready for me in four days but they also recommended things I could do to try and recover my stolen bike. From here on out I'll buy everything I need from these guys. I think this store has arrived at the perfect time for our neighborhood and you'll do us all a disservice if you don't at least consider them. read more

Couldn't ask for a better shop. I brought in a bike I got from Craigslist and they did a safety check for free, telling me it was fine to ride but also listing very reasonable prices for any upgrades I might want. I bought new pedals for $10 and the homey with the beard put them on for free and magically stopped my breaks from squeaking in like 3 seconds. Clearly I am a total noob - haven't ridden a bike in 15 years - but they didn't talk down to me or anything - just friendly, helpful service. 5 stars. read more

The reviews were right - this place is great! I had my bike in storage for over a year and figured that beyond the flat tires, it probably needed a tune-up. [I'm not an avid biker - so I don't know much about bike mechanics and maintenance.] I looked on YELP to see what bike shops (convenient to my home) were highly rated and wouldn't charge me and arm and a leg -- glad I saw the great reviews on Comrade. The guys working were friendly and most importantly, upfront that my bike really didn't need the $70 tune-up (which, btw, seems to run like $90-$120 at every other shop I checked out), but just needed some air in the tires and a piece that was bent maneuvered back in place. They fixed the bike and pumped my tires all for $15 and I had my bike back in 24 hours. I appreciate the small business aspect of this place, not to mention the fact that they didn't try to sell me something I didn't need. read more

Love these guys!! Great customer service, honest, helpful and super easy to work with. I came in because my tire popped, got it fixed in twenty minutes. I told one of the guys that my bike seat was uncomfortable, he gave me a used bike seat (that was more comfortable) than mine for free and even put it on. I was so happy with their customer service that I asked him for his opinion on bike lights and he recommended the best ones for money. I felt like I came out of there with a new custom made bike! Went into this place for the first time today - SUPER friendly and helpful. I know nothing about bikes, just that something was wrong with mine. They took the time to explain the problem, quoted me a price and took my number to call when they were done. I had assumed I wouldn't see my bike for a week or so but this was quality same-day service (less than two hours) and they charged exactly what they quoted. My wheel was pretty out of true. Rather than recommend that I replace it outright, Bailey at Comrade trued it into a more ridable condition, let me know what to expect as to the lifespan of the rim and let me know that riding it in its current state wouldn't damage any of the rest of my equipment. As a moderate cyclist I've had a tune up or two over the years. This summer it was that time again and I was thrilled that Comrade was up and running because of their location in relation to where I live. Taking your bike into new place always has question marks but after my rear wheel axle repair was complete there was no question about it - Comrade Cycles rocks. I continue to be beyond impressed by Comrade Cycles. I just started biking last summer, and I'm slowly working my way up to commuting full time. They gave my salvaged bike a detailed tune up with just as much care as the $1000 bike sitting next to it. Although the staff presents somewhere between hippie and hipster, they are courteous and not obnoxious like many other hipster staff at stores in the area. Last weekend, I was having trouble with my gears, and they took a look right away. When they heard that I had gotten a tune up within a year, they didn't charge for the repair. Amazing. read more

They listened to me, talked about different bikes, spent time giving me estimates, gave me ideas about how to make the bike fit me (4'11" tall), and never put any pressure on me to do anything. Eventually I bought that Long Haul Trucker, but only after I was really sure as a result of the help I received from Jesse, Bailey, Aaron. Recently I brought my 10 year old bike in for new tires and a check up. I was told that the bike itself was in good condition and all I really needed to do was replace the chain. The guy helping me, whose name I can't recall unfortunately, was great. Very professional and courteous, and not at all condescending like at some other places I've visited. He showed me a couple of options of tires and did his best to describe the differences and benefits of each. After deciding what I wanted to do, he took down my number and told me it would be about 20-30 minutes for him to do the work, which really surprised me as I expected I might have to leave the bike for a day or two. As the shop is conveniently located next door to West Town Bakery, I decided to wait it out over an omelette an coffee. After 30 minutes, he called me back and said that my bike was ready. He also informed me that a couple of gears were broken and recommended that I replace them, which I did. All told, for new tires, a new chain, a couple of new gears and labor I was out of pocket $160, which I find to be completely reasonable considering the outstanding service and convenience. I highly recommend these guys to anyone looking to shop local and receive outstanding customer service. I don't know how competitive they are pricing wise, but I really don't care based on the service I received. read more

I've been actively riding a bike in the city for over 8 years. I've lived in a number of different neighborhoods over that period and have used dozens of different bike shops as a result. Never has another shop come even remotely close to the service, care, and kindness of Comrade. Everyone there is kind and unpretentious, they offer superb service and products at a reasonable price and they are consistently just trying to make their customers happy. If ever there is a mistake with a service they've preformed, which is almost never, they go ahead and subsequently fix it without trying to haggle over blame or responsibility. These dudes rule. After my terrible experience at West Town Bikes, I stopped in to Comrade to get my spoke replaced. Not only did they do the repair without judgement, they noticed that the rest of the spokes could use a tension adjustment and the rim strip was worn out. I was prepared to need to leave my bike at the shop and come pick it up later, but they said they could do the repair while I waited.
