Such a good choice if you're in the area. The Mac n cheese was delicious. The chicken drumsticks were creative. The "bone" is sugar cane. The chicken texture was insane. So was the shrimp. Tasted and had the texture like shrimp. The batter for the fried food had so much seasoning. A little spicy cause I'm a wimp but couldn't stop eating. Collard greens were so flavorful. Everything tasted so good. Idk if they also make their own sauces, but the BBQ and Buffalo were also good. We received the wrong plates, but we had already left. I'm guessing maybe they ran out of some stuff. Wish we could've tried the corn bread. I hope we're back soon to try more things. It is hidden away a little, trust the gps haha. Service was great young lady brought my order to my car. No ambience because I decided to eat in my car. The presentation was great. so I ordered the dinner. I got one protein and three sides for $25. Portion size was great. I got the grilled shrimp, collard greens, macaroni and cheese and potato salad. The potato salad is good is made with sweet relish. Dill relish would also be great. The mac & cheese is just OK has a little bit of pepper that's about the only spice I can taste. collard greens were good just a little spicy. The grilled lemon with the shrimp was very nice. The shrimp however had a very weird texture, but they are some kind of vegan seafood substitute.. the sauce for the shrimp was very tasty.The food was not overly salty or spicy. My husband wanted wings from Compton Vegan. He loved the vegan bone in wings that he sold from the green truck. He went online to the menu and realized the only way to get the wings, you had to order a combo. So my husband ordered 3 combos it came with a burger the wings and fries. He also ordered onion rings. He pays for his order and go to the location to pick it up. Once my husband arrived Mr Compton Vegan comes out and says, He doesn't have the bone in wings and can he give him boneless wings and my husband agrees. After a while he came back out and says they are also out of Onion rings and can he give him sweet potato fries and my husband agreed again. The food was awful! No one liked the boneless wings! After being vegan for a little over a year now, my partner and I were still searching for restaurants offering soulful comfort foods. I have mixed feelings about Compton Vegan. We ordered the boneless chicken dinner plate, with an added protein of fried shrimp. The sides were corn bread, mac and cheese, baked beans and collard greens. The place is not a walk in or sit down location. You call or text ahead, and order, then pick up at the kitchen doors. The wait time was about 20 minutes, and the food had a tamper seal on the bag. We drove from Brea to the restaurant, and waited until we got home to enjoy. Unfortunately, we should have checked the contents, because after 42 minutes driving home, we learned the corn bread was NOT in the bag. Once we sat to eat, we tasted the proteins first. To note, almost every item had a little kick/spice to it. I do not personally like spicy food, so I may be a little sensitive, but my partner noted the same and prefers spicy. The shrimp was pretty spot on. It was good, but the texture was a lot like overcooked shrimp. Not a deal breaker. The boneless fried chicken tasted just like dark meat chicken, but the shape and texture were a little off putting, also not a deal breaker. I am not a fan of collards, as I find them too bitter, but these were the most bitter collards my partner and I have ever tasted. Definitely not a fan. The mac and cheese had the texture right, but had no flavor. A little salt helped make it more palatable. The baked beans were a hit as well. Over all, I would like to try again, in hopes of getting my corn bread, as well as finding the sides that are good, but maybe will wait until we are in the area, instead of making the trek just to have a missing side. I've been wanting to try Compton Vegan for a while and was happy to see them at the Vegan popup this weekend. Sadly I was really disappointed in the food. The two guys at the food truck were really nice but I ordered the $15 BBQ Chik'n and Mac Bowl and could only eat a couple of bites. The Chik'n was ok but there seemed to be a miscommunication with the guy taking the orders and cook because they forgot to coat the Chik'n in BBQ sauce. The Mac and Cheeze was dry, super grainy and lacked flavor, it seemed like it was just turmeric and nutritional yeast. I think people would enjoy the Mac and Cheeze if there was a creamy cheese sauce and less grainy. I really wanted to support and hope they improve on their recipe. read more

The chick'n just wasn't edible to me. I tried it with hot sauce and I couldn't eat it. It came with a side of vegan ranch which also wasn't good. I liked the vegan mac and cheese. It tastes similar to others I've tried and the one I make at home. I think the base is cashews and nutritional yeast. I added a bit more salt to mine, but overall, it wasn't too bad. The baked beans were standard delicious baked beans. They paired well with the cornbread. Overall... I was disappointed in the food. The entree plate as a whole was inconsistent. THE PLACE Compton Vegan is located at one of those colony places. You can order ahead of time on their site or order in person at the counter. My order was done pretty quick, maybe 15 minutes -- which was great. THE VERDICT The plate was pricey, especially considering you have to add chicken... to the fried chicken plate? This didn't make sense to me. I think the chicken was an additional $5. I wouldn't mind the price if the food was a bit more consistent. With tip, I paid ~$30 for the entree. I was excited about trying out Compton Vegan and I will return to try a couple other things. Overall 3.5/5 stars. Jackfruit ribs - so good! My partner who isn't a jackfruit fan really liked these. I didn't tell him they were jackfruit until well after he tried them.. and he kept eating :) BBQ chick'n - good though kind of dry and chalky on the inside. Mac & cheese isn't good, disappointing. When smothered with some bbq sauce it's *much* better. Collard greens were fine when mixed with everything else. Cornbread was good, maybe not the best but that was covered up with the sweetness. The food was honestly awful. I'm ashamed that I paid $20 for such abysmal food. Honestly, I would not eat Compton Vegan even if it was free. I ordered the rib plate. The sides included mac and cheese, collards, and baked beans. The ribs were basically comparable to mystery meat, or akin to dense & chewy logs layered with barbecue sauce. Had to force myself to even get through one. The collards were cooked down but dry. I could taste a hint of salt, but it appears that no real flavor was imparted during the cooking process. The baked beans straight from a can. I swear. As someone who grew up eating canned foods, I know Bushes Baked Beans when I taste them. The mac and cheese...Lordt. I don't know what that was but it wasn't mac and cheese. I can tell you that much. It was also dry; see photo for reference. Whatever cheese sauce the macaroni had been tossed in was thick and lumpy. I've tried a variety of vegan Mac and cheeses over the past few years, from "Mac n Yease" from Whole Foods to just dairy free boxed variations, which I throughly enjoyed! Compton Vegan is a black-owned business that does a vegan pop up in Long Beach at Trademark brewery every Monday for Meatless Mondays and it's incredible! Their vegan fried chick'n drum sticks are my favorite, they put what I believe is a type of vegetable rind for the bone and it's fried to perfection. You have to get there when they start because some of their dishes sell out quick like their vegan collard greens (a must try) paired with their Mac and cheese. I attend Meatless Mondays and Compton Vegan is regularly there. Well the convenience is the only good thing about this review. It was HIGHLY disappointing. Because I wanted to like the food I tried a second time and yea, same disappointment. I hesitated to write this review but it was bugging me not to write about my experiences. The prices are extremely high for subpar not even decent food. I couldn't believe it. I paid $32 for food just for me and I had to throw it away. I absolutely hate wasting food. In the two visits I tried the vegan fried chicken, vegan fysh, greens, beans, rib plate that included Mac n cheese, greens and beans. The only thing I could eat was the beans and they tasted like they were poured straight from the can onto my plate. I half way ate them because they reminded me of bush's baked beans. Though edible, for this kind of money, I don't want canned beans! Not sure how anyone could like this food. The reviews are baffling because there's no way anyone's taste buds could be ok with this. I hope the founder of Compton Vegan tries something different. I love the concept but not the food. And for anyone wondering, yes, I'm vegan. A vegan that loves tasty, flavorful, cruelty free food. The food is fire, hands down!! Everything was seasoned well and it reminded me of soul food restaurant. The bbq sauce is a little spicy but it's bussin!! Chef Durrah is quick and efficient when preparing, making and delivering the food. My husband and I gobbled down the food from the instant it touched our hands. He got the Jack fruit tacos & said it tasted like pulled chicken. I even had a bite and it was so spot on to tasting like chicken. I love soul food and since I've recently turned vegan I wanted to give this a try.. the chicken is some wiggly mush with non crispy coating, (my mom who has been vegan for 13 years could not even eat the chicken) Mac and cheese is spicy... not that bad but definitely does not taste like Mac and cheese. He should have told me this when I placed the order, but they had a dj outside and he keeps you dancing. Anyway the ribs were off the chain and the shrimp really taste like the real deal. After years of hearing about Compton Vegan - I finally tried it myself this weekend at the Vegan Exchange! I was really hoping to like it.... even love it. Unfortunately, it was not good at all. I would even call it the worst vegan food I have ever had. I have been vegetarian (now vegan) for nearly 30 years. As you can imagine, I have had A LOT of vegan and veggie food. Therefore, for me to give it such a poor review is serious. The woman taking orders was less than helpful. Customer service counts and she was rude. That would have made a difference. I even told her I hadn't eaten there before so I would appreciate any information she could offer - nah, still unhelpful. I ordered the Mac N' Cheese and BBQ Chicken. I will say (as mentioned above) portion size was decent. Now for the not-so-good news. The Mac N' Cheese was oily. Not cheesy at all. Just drenched with oily. It was oily pasta. Then the BBQ Chicken. Deep-fried then doused with BBQ sauce. Yikes. Not good. It was horrible. And, chicken nuggets. And, I was expecting (and hoping) that Mac N' Cheese and BBQ Chicken would be placed side by side in the container. Nope. The Mac N' Cheese was underneath the BBQ Chicken so the sauce got everywhere. I don't want / need sauce all over my Mac N' Cheese. Barf. It was a waste of money. I had 3 bites and threw it all out. I was so excited to try this after all these years. What a disappointment. I truly love when the vendors (especially ones I am not familiar with) have photos of the food so you can SEE what to expect. They didn't have a picture of this item. It would have been helpful. And, I asked if they offered samples. Miss Rude at the front said they don't offer them. That would have saved me money and time... and would have saved them from getting a poor review. Maybe they will offer samples and post pictures in the future. And, maybe their order taker will be more helpful. I hope they add more cheese to the Mac N' Cheese. I'm not vegan, but definitely enjoyed the quality of food coming from this establishment. I really enjoyed the mac n cheeze. Let's be honest cheese is what makes the dish, but CV places their own spin on it and have created a very flavorful alternative. I loved the jackfruit ribs too. The sauce is amazing, and it's seasoned well. It's not the exact same texture as ribs, but close enough; you legit don't miss the meat. Hello from my buffalo mac bowl. This morning, one of my friends mentioned getting this bowl at the Vegan Exchange and I immediately had to find where it came from. The chicken has a good kick and I'm very impressed by the homemade ranch. Trying new veggie chickens always makes me nervous, but the texture and flavor is great! It's not too realistic (which freaks me out), but it still holds the sauce's flavor well. In direct response to some of the mac criticisms, I'd say that it's not at all an oily mac. And yeah, it doesn't taste exactly like cheese, but vegan macs never do! It's really well seasoned and I can't figure out what else is on the mac, but the texture is really hearty. Honestly, the mac tastes a little like my favorite vegan mac I used to make but it was super labor intensive so I haven't made it in years. Good to know I can find something like it in LA! My only regret? Not ordering a side of baked beans. read more
