I fully support vegan restaurants and truly truly desire the owner succeed. However the ribz that I ordered did not look like the ribz posted on their site or that others have posted. I will post the ribz shown on the order site and the ribz I received. Consistency is so so so so so important. Additionally, the serving portion was generous with 5 pieces but I could only eat 2 as the flavor was off and I just tasted vinegar and not in a good way. Could not eat the rest. Potato salad also tasted like alot of vinegar. Corn bread was amazing. Thanks. read more

Such a good choice if you're in the area. The Mac n cheese was delicious. The chicken drumsticks were creative. The "bone" is sugar cane. The chicken texture was insane. So was the shrimp. Tasted and had the texture like shrimp. The batter for the fried food had so much seasoning. A little spicy cause I'm a wimp but couldn't stop eating. Collard greens were so flavorful. Everything tasted so good. Idk if they also make their own sauces, but the BBQ and Buffalo were also good. We received the wrong plates, but we had already left. I'm guessing maybe they ran out of some stuff. Wish we could've tried the corn bread. I hope we're back soon to try more things. It is hidden away a little, trust the gps haha. You gotta order online and pick up at the place. read more

Do yourself a favor...vegan or not...stop by to get the CHEESE BUBBA. I am not a vegan or vegetarian. I normally opt for turkey burgers. This well seasoned patty is by far the best vegan patty I've ever had. The veggies and bread are all fresh and whatever "cheese" used is great! I've been here twice now and have sent my colleagues over to try and so far everyone gives it rave reviews. The service is pretty fast and you also get a HUGE amount of seasoned fries with the combo. I'm a fan. read more

Was in LA and been hearing about their food truck so I gave em a try. The ribs are the main attraction of course. They didn't disappoint. Surprisingly, I enjoyed my brother's began ribs better and he's only made them once. The Mac n cheese was really disappointing. I'm not expecting regular non-vegan home cooked mac, but I need something more than boiled elbows dusted with nutritional yeast and I've certainly come across better plant-based mac. They'd have to improve greatly for me to go back read more

Rosecrans and Central driving from a friend's house and saw Compton Vegan food truck. I'm always skeptical of food trucks because it's usually very expensive and the food is usually not good. Service was great young lady brought my order to my car. No ambience because I decided to eat in my car. The presentation was great. so I ordered the dinner. I got one protein and three sides for $25. Portion size was great. I got the grilled shrimp, collard greens, macaroni and cheese and potato salad. The potato salad is good is made with sweet relish. Dill relish would also be great. The mac & cheese is just OK has a little bit of pepper that's about the only spice I can taste. collard greens were good just a little spicy. The grilled lemon with the shrimp was very nice. The shrimp however had a very weird texture, but they are some kind of vegan seafood substitute.. the sauce for the shrimp was very tasty. The food was not overly salty or spicy. Which sometimes happens with non-vegan foods trying to be prepared vegan. Overall, I will give it a 4.5 out of five. Thank you from my vegan heart read more

My husband wanted wings from Compton Vegan. He loved the vegan bone in wings that he sold from the green truck. He went online to the menu and realized the only way to get the wings, you had to order a combo. So my husband ordered 3 combos it came with a burger the wings and fries. He also ordered onion rings. He pays for his order and go to the location to pick it up. Once my husband arrived Mr Compton Vegan comes out and says, He doesn't have the bone in wings and can he give him boneless wings and my husband agrees. After a while he came back out and says they are also out of Onion rings and can he give him sweet potato fries and my husband agreed again. The food was awful! No one liked the boneless wings! The fries were over cooked. My burger was burnt. I was so disappointed we enjoy supporting small black owned businesses. But sometimes you just got to follow your heart. read more

The food is amazing! The portions are HUGE so go with an appetite. Everything came out on-time, fresh and hot. Each dish came with its own condiments and was packed up and plated with care. Fried shrimp, crispy, well seasoned absolutely delicious. Ribs, saucy, perfectly balanced with sweet and smoky flavors. Baked beans were hands down my favorite! Mac n cheese was the perfect paring to any dish. And the greens are tangy, well seasoned and perfectly cooked, not too soft or crispy, perfect. If you haven't been here yet and are debating where to eat right now, just go! read more

After being vegan for a little over a year now, my partner and I were still searching for restaurants offering soulful comfort foods. I have mixed feelings about Compton Vegan. We ordered the boneless chicken dinner plate, with an added protein of fried shrimp. The sides were corn bread, mac and cheese, baked beans and collard greens. The place is not a walk in or sit down location. You call or text ahead, and order, then pick up at the kitchen doors. The wait time was about 20 minutes, and the food had a tamper seal on the bag. We drove from Brea to the restaurant, and waited until we got home to enjoy. Unfortunately, we should have checked the contents, because after 42 minutes driving home, we learned the corn bread was NOT in the bag. Once we sat to eat, we tasted the proteins first. To note, almost every item had a little kick/spice to it. I do not personally like spicy food, so I may be a little sensitive, but my partner noted the same and prefers spicy. The shrimp was pretty spot on. It was good, but the texture was a lot like overcooked shrimp. Not a deal breaker. The boneless fried chicken tasted just like dark meat chicken, but the shape and texture were a little off putting, also not a deal breaker. I am not a fan of collards, as I find them too bitter, but these were the most bitter collards my partner and I have ever tasted. Definitely not a fan. The mac and cheese had the texture right, but had no flavor. A little salt helped make it more palatable. The baked beans were a hit as well. Over all, I would like to try again, in hopes of getting my corn bread, as well as finding the sides that are good, but maybe will wait until we are in the area, instead of making the trek just to have a missing side. After reading the reviews, we hope they bring back the burgers, as we'd love to try that! read more

I've been wanting to try Compton Vegan for a while and was happy to see them at the Vegan popup this weekend. Sadly I was really disappointed in the food. The two guys at the food truck were really nice but I ordered the $15 BBQ Chik'n and Mac Bowl and could only eat a couple of bites. The Chik'n was ok but there seemed to be a miscommunication with the guy taking the orders and cook because they forgot to coat the Chik'n in BBQ sauce. The Mac and Cheeze was dry, super grainy and lacked flavor, it seemed like it was just turmeric and nutritional yeast. I think people would enjoy the Mac and Cheeze if there was a creamy cheese sauce and less grainy. I really wanted to support and hope they improve on their recipe. read more

THE FOOD Cornbread muffin - 4/5 Baked beans - 5/5 Mac & cheese - 3.5/5 Greens - 2/5 Fried chick'n - 0/5 When I first got my plate, I sat in my car and took a bite of everything while it was warm. I almost threw the cornbread out because it was super hard. But when I got home, I warmed my entire plate up in the microwave and the cornbread was actually pretty good! It's softer when warm. It is a little dry, slightly sweet. Overall, good though. The greens and fried chick'n I'm almost completely passed on, but the greens are good with some Louisiana hot sauce. The chick'n just wasn't edible to me. I tried it with hot sauce and I couldn't eat it. It came with a side of vegan ranch which also wasn't good. I liked the vegan mac and cheese. It tastes similar to others I've tried and the one I make at home. I think the base is cashews and nutritional yeast. I added a bit more salt to mine, but overall, it wasn't too bad. The baked beans were standard delicious baked beans. They paired well with the cornbread. Overall... I was disappointed in the food. The entree plate as a whole was inconsistent. THE PLACE Compton Vegan is located at one of those colony places. You can order ahead of time on their site or order in person at the counter. My order was done pretty quick, maybe 15 minutes -- which was great. THE VERDICT The plate was pricey, especially considering you have to add chicken... to the fried chicken plate? This didn't make sense to me. I think the chicken was an additional $5. I wouldn't mind the price if the food was a bit more consistent. With tip, I paid ~$30 for the entree. I want to come back and try some other items though to see if I like something else better. read more

High quality and care food truck serving Los Angeles with a variety of plant-based soul food favorites. I try to try something new each time I come across CV at gatherings, pop-ups and events wherever they might be including the 818 Collective (San Fernando Valley), Vegan Playground (DTLA Arts District), Vegan Exchange (North Hollywood) and Party Beer Co (West Adams, Los Angeles) to name a few places... not to mention near Rosecrans and Central by the Grocery Outlet of Compton, Los Angeles, California plus here in Santa Monica. The Buffalo Chik'N Mac is definitely a top pick as is the BBQ Jackfruit Ribz entree/plate - they're very allergen friendly and cautious, the non-dairy base for mac being cashew, but several dishes without including vegan Gumbo, Shrimp & fries plus a good selection of sides. You can keep up to date by signing up for their mailing list, following their Instagram and checking out the website for Compton Vegan updates and happenings all year long. read more

I picked up an order at The Colony (separate review for that) - bbq jackfruit ribz plate and bbq chick'n & mac. I was excited about trying out Compton Vegan and I will return to try a couple other things. Overall 3.5/5 stars. Jackfruit ribs - so good! My partner who isn't a jackfruit fan really liked these. I didn't tell him they were jackfruit until well after he tried them.. and he kept eating :) BBQ chick'n - good though kind of dry and chalky on the inside. Mac & cheese isn't good, disappointing. When smothered with some bbq sauce it's *much* better. Collard greens were fine when mixed with everything else. Cornbread was good, maybe not the best but that was covered up with the sweetness. Baked beans were okay. Some of the food has a slight kick to it, for those who are babies with spice (like me!). Next time I will try the 'shrimp' and french fries, and update my review. read more

Fried "fish" made from banana blossoms!!! AMAZING!!! https://bit.ly/2VUoPkA Ok, so technically this isn't the first time I've had fried banana blossoms but I am absolutely glad that Compton Vegan offers this because YUM!!! We ordered Compton Vegan earlier this month when the Ultimate Vegan Surf and Turf caught our attention. It's a $20 plate with steak, fried shrimp made with konjac, and that super delicious banana blossom "fish" that totally rocks my world! It also comes with corn on the cob and mashed potatoes. While the price seems a bit up there, the large portion size is totally worth the expense. https://bit.ly/3gDjpm5 We also ordered a Shrimp Po Boy because I can never have enough vegan shrimp, especially when it's breaded and fried the way Compton Vegan does it. That remoulade just added to the awesomeness that is this sandwich. https://bit.ly/2DkU6qG For this particular experience, I texted Compton Vegan my order for pickup in Compton. I was instructed to meet at a Rite Aid parking lot at a certain time. I wasn't sure if he would be setting up a table or booth but arrived early and noticed others waiting in their cars. When some folks got out of their cars and approached another car, I noticed the owner of Compton Vegan was distributing bags of food out of the trunk of his car. I gave him my name, he gave me a bag, and I venmo-ed him money. Easy peasy! This wasn't the first time I've had Compton Vegan. In April 2018, I went to a popup event at Cosmic Brewery in Torrance and Compton Vegan was one of the vendors that I wanted to target so I was first in line and waited patiently as he set up. Super nice guy! He thanked me for waiting several times as he set up. The BBQ Jackfruit Ribs blew my mind! https://bit.ly/2VWGtVc I also ordered the Buffalo Chicken which hit the spot as well! https://bit.ly/3e8CdrG I would say, I'm more impressed by the "meats" than I am with the sides. But that's enough to get me to come back. The main reason there is so much time between my experiences with Compton Vegan is that for the longest time, I saw the same stuff on the menu. But recently I noticed the menu had expanded. I personally haven't visited The Colony in West LA yet but that's pretty cool that Compton Vegan can be picked up from that side of town too. Definitely a fan! I'm very tempted to order every time the menu is posted on social media, especially now that I see new items more frequently. #takemymoney read more

The food was honestly awful. I'm ashamed that I paid $20 for such abysmal food. Honestly, I would not eat Compton Vegan even if it was free. I ordered the rib plate. The sides included mac and cheese, collards, and baked beans. The ribs were basically comparable to mystery meat, or akin to dense & chewy logs layered with barbecue sauce. Had to force myself to even get through one. The collards were cooked down but dry. I could taste a hint of salt, but it appears that no real flavor was imparted during the cooking process. The baked beans straight from a can. I swear. As someone who grew up eating canned foods, I know Bushes Baked Beans when I taste them. The mac and cheese...Lordt. I don't know what that was but it wasn't mac and cheese. I can tell you that much. It was also dry; see photo for reference. Whatever cheese sauce the macaroni had been tossed in was thick and lumpy. I've tried a variety of vegan Mac and cheeses over the past few years, from "Mac n Yease" from Whole Foods to just dairy free boxed variations, which I throughly enjoyed! It's sad to say, but any off brand boxed Mac and cheese would have blown Compton Vegans out of the water. With that being said, I wouldn't return any circumstances. My friend got the same plate as me and also didn't enjoy her food, rating it at 2.5. read more

Wow. Heads up, my order is large mainly due to an UberEats promotional discount which I am so glad about embracing because my dinner is amazing! The Spicy Shrimp & Mac is so flavorful. The spices between the Collard Greens and the Spicy Mac are so distinct. To be able to go from one portion of the meal to another portion, able to identify each portion's flavors so distinctly, so immediately, after the other, is wonderful. I like Vegan Shrimp Konjac a lot better than the animal version! The Cornbread is delicious, so sweet! The Baked Beans are savory and sweet. Is this meal worth the price without the discount? YES! Compton Vegan is a black-owned business that does a vegan pop up in Long Beach at Trademark brewery every Monday for Meatless Mondays and it's incredible! Their vegan fried chick'n drum sticks are my favorite, they put what I believe is a type of vegetable rind for the bone and it's fried to perfection. You have to get there when they start because some of their dishes sell out quick like their vegan collard greens (a must try) paired with their Mac and cheese. Their service is quick, but always friendly. It's great for friends and family(they have non-alcoholic bevs). Highly recommend giving them a try! read more

I really really wanted to like this place. I chased them down for 2 years. During the pandemic it was hard to catch up with them but I recently loved to Long Beach and my hunt was over. I attend Meatless Mondays and Compton Vegan is regularly there. Well the convenience is the only good thing about this review. It was HIGHLY disappointing. Because I wanted to like the food I tried a second time and yea, same disappointment. I hesitated to write this review but it was bugging me not to write about my experiences. The prices are extremely high for subpar not even decent food. I couldn't believe it. I paid $32 for food just for me and I had to throw it away. I absolutely hate wasting food. In the two visits I tried the vegan fried chicken, vegan fysh, greens, beans, rib plate that included Mac n cheese, greens and beans. The only thing I could eat was the beans and they tasted like they were poured straight from the can onto my plate. I half way ate them because they reminded me of bush's baked beans. Though edible, for this kind of money, I don't want canned beans! Not sure how anyone could like this food. The reviews are baffling because there's no way anyone's taste buds could be ok with this. I hope the founder of Compton Vegan tries something different. I love the concept but not the food. And for anyone wondering, yes, I'm vegan. A vegan that loves tasty, flavorful, cruelty free food. This was just cruelty free, nothing more. Not holding on to the saying three times a charm because I fear it will be three times I'm broke! Two chances was quite enough. LOL read more

The food is fire, hands down!! Everything was seasoned well and it reminded me of soul food restaurant. The bbq sauce is a little spicy but it's bussin!! Chef Durrah is quick and efficient when preparing, making and delivering the food. My husband and I gobbled down the food from the instant it touched our hands. He got the Jack fruit tacos & said it tasted like pulled chicken. I even had a bite and it was so spot on to tasting like chicken. I had the Jack fruit ribs and macaroni & cheese(which had a full spread of flavors from salty to sweet with the bread crumbs and cashew cheese) collard greens (which were so good), the baked beans (which were tasty) and we split a side of fries. All in all, this was a fantastic experience. I definitely want all of his recipes!! We'll be back! read more

Compton Vegan - a person holding a styrofoam container of food - Vegan Near Me - Hawthorne, California

Straight outta Compton, a veggie food truck with attitude. I can appreciate what they are trying to do, but I think they try too hard. Their vegan chicken had a "sugar cane" bone in it. I dont think you need to have a "bone" in your plant based chicken. I got the nashville and it was not hot enough to qualify for the nashville name. The cashew milk based mac n cheese was a good version, perhaps too much 'Nooch (nutritional yeast) in an effort to mimic that cheese flavor. The collard greens rocked. Beans were good as well. read more

Good idea... but would not pay $22 for something that looks like a middle school lunch. With so many people leaving 5 star reviews while over paying I thought I would give it a try. I love soul food and since I've recently turned vegan I wanted to give this a try.. the chicken is some wiggly mush with non crispy coating, (my mom who has been vegan for 13 years could not even eat the chicken) Mac and cheese is spicy... not that bad but definitely does not taste like Mac and cheese. The beans are good but you can just get them at a grocery store. Cornbread was sticky but still good so that's why I put 2/5. We never leave bad reviews but this time felt compelled to. read more

I was originally exposed to the Compton food truck and there delicious vegan dishes when I was at a party inside SoFi stadium. I searched for months to find them again and then I accidental found them on fountain avenue (near Fairfax). Yay!!! I pulled right over and ordered the Mac & Jac ... Delicious! Truly a delight to have vegan comfort food that tasted so amazing. Obviously a house made Mac with a cashew and nooch based cheese , very creamy & tasty. I was also amazed at the flavor and texture of the bbq jackfruit. I tried in the past to make my own but talking with Lemel, he gave me pointers and some suggestions for bbq sauce and things to improve my next attempts. Thanks Lemel for what you do. read more

The shrimp was sold out so maybe thats the menu item to go for. I really wanted to like this place and I think it has potential but for the price, everything I tried was very disappointing. The staff was nice. Popcorn chicken: 1/5, texture was like dried out dough and flavor was abysmal. Could only eat one piece. Collards: 2/5, boiled, unseasoned greens that could easily be improved. Mac n Cheese: 2/5, hot sauce bumped it up a point but other than that it just tasted like nutritional yeast and didn't look appetizing. Onion rings: 3/5, average, more dipping sauce options would be appreciated. There's only hot sauce and ketchup. Chicken Wings: 3/5, my friend got this and it was better than the popcorn chicken but still nothing to write home about. read more

Everything we had was delicious. I'm definitely coming back. The entire place had an interesting vibe. Excellent customer service.

Compton Vegan is it! I got the entree with ribs. The ribs are awesome!! They have the texture of real pork. The beans and vegan corn bread are so good too. The only thing I was disappointed with, was the macaroni and cheese. Lord have mercy, It has no favor. I think the price of $20 is a lot for an entree but it's vegan. Vegan food is expensive and I understand that, however, I think the the portion sides should be bigger, especially the non vegan sides. Also, to not allow substitutes is forcing another to eat something they don't wish to nor like and pay more for am additional side. Good idea from business perspective but from customer perspective, that was disappointing. Overall, the vegan soul food entree was very delicious and if you are seeking vegans bbq and or vegan soul food, this is it. The new location is located at 11419 Santa Monica Blvd in the colony. Compton Vegan - This is the rib entree meal! Banging! Loved it! - Vegan Near Me - Hawthorne, California

After years of hearing about Compton Vegan - I finally tried it myself this weekend at the Vegan Exchange! I was really hoping to like it.... even love it. Unfortunately, it was not good at all. I would even call it the worst vegan food I have ever had. I have been vegetarian (now vegan) for nearly 30 years. As you can imagine, I have had A LOT of vegan and veggie food. Therefore, for me to give it such a poor review is serious. The woman taking orders was less than helpful. Customer service counts and she was rude. That would have made a difference. I even told her I hadn't eaten there before so I would appreciate any information she could offer - nah, still unhelpful. I ordered the Mac N' Cheese and BBQ Chicken. I will say (as mentioned above) portion size was decent. Now for the not-so-good news. The Mac N' Cheese was oily. Not cheesy at all. Just drenched with oily. It was oily pasta. Then the BBQ Chicken. Deep-fried then doused with BBQ sauce. Yikes. Not good. It was horrible. And, chicken nuggets. And, I was expecting (and hoping) that Mac N' Cheese and BBQ Chicken would be placed side by side in the container. Nope. The Mac N' Cheese was underneath the BBQ Chicken so the sauce got everywhere. I don't want / need sauce all over my Mac N' Cheese. Barf. It was a waste of money. I had 3 bites and threw it all out. I was so excited to try this after all these years. What a disappointment. I truly love when the vendors (especially ones I am not familiar with) have photos of the food so you can SEE what to expect. They didn't have a picture of this item. It would have been helpful. And, I asked if they offered samples. Miss Rude at the front said they don't offer them. That would have saved me money and time... and would have saved them from getting a poor review. Maybe they will offer samples and post pictures in the future. And, maybe their order taker will be more helpful. I hope they add more cheese to the Mac N' Cheese. Hands down the WORST Mac N' Cheese I have ever had.... Sorry Compton Vegan... I was really hoping to like you. :( read more

I'm not vegan, but definitely enjoyed the quality of food coming from this establishment. I really enjoyed the mac n cheeze. Let's be honest cheese is what makes the dish, but CV places their own spin on it and have created a very flavorful alternative. I loved the jackfruit ribs too. The sauce is amazing, and it's seasoned well. It's not the exact same texture as ribs, but close enough; you legit don't miss the meat. This establishment has added soul and flavor to vegan food, and I can't wait to return. P.s. the cornbread is made with crack (meaning they are addictive). So yummy. read more
