Yelp! rocks again! - Yelp! has done well for home service contractors 3 out of 3 previous times, so…read morewhen I finally got around to doing much-needed flooring, I turned to Yelp!, found three highly-rated flooring companies with consistently legitimate favorable-to-stellar reviews (I disregard reviews from Yelpers with only one or two reviews). As mom and dad always stressed, I always get at least three estimates/bids. The visit and estimates - I contacted all three flooring companies within a two-day period, mid-last-week. All got back within one or two days, but Melvin actually responded and came out same day. All three had good service on the estimate, offering suggestions here and there and so although I gave the edge to Melvin I was waiting on prices. Early the next week I received the three estimates and two were within $200 of each other, the third was $2,200 higher with no difference in materials or anything else on the detailed estimate. All three did a great job of detailing the work to be done and that made it easy to choose... to choose Melvin. The job - Melvin started the work last Friday, with two of his two-man teams working all day. Saturday and Monday one team worked all day. Tuesday and today they finished up. One team includes his brother, Milton, who did some fine craftsmanship work (see pics). Every day, the floor specialists were very special, great attitudes, polite, protected everywhere with plastic, moved my furniture gently, etc. They were perfect, it's not easy to get a skilled craftsman who also cares about the customer and customer service with a great, personable attitude. The job included four rooms and stairs: 1. Replace 26-year old vinyl floor in kitchen with faux-marble luxury vinyl. 2. Refinish oak hardwood in living room, family room, hallway and pine stairs - one coat of stain and two coats of oil-based polyurethane (Melvin explained during the estimate that although oil-based requires drying overnight/longer time, my 72-year-old hardwood floors deserve/need oil-based because water-based in not as gentle on brittle wood). Paint the stair risers white. The results - the clean-up was meticulously done and they refused to accept payment until after I assured them everything was perfect. Best part of it was I could tell they really cared about making me happy. See the pics. The darkish color on the stairs is just a photo/lighting anomaly as is the red color on the floors in the family room. THANK YOU, Melvin, for running such an amazing small flooring business. Garry was hired to do removal of hard wood flooring and installation of EVP in a 700 sq ft area. He…read moretold us this would be a 3-4 day job at most. He started the job on a Monday and it still wasn't complete by Sat. We did ask him he hold off on Friday so we could have some painting done. We told him id this would hold him up too much we would wait on the painting. He agreed to holding off on Friday and said I would work all day Sat & Sun to get the job done by Monday. He also requested 1/2 the money be paid since we asked for a day off And we paid. Garry showed up Saturday later than the agreed upon time. He worked for a few hours but made little progress on the instillation. On Sunday Garry didn't show up. He didn't even have the decency to call. He sent my husband and text saying "I'm not coming today, I have to be there for my family". When we asked what time he would arrive Monday, he never replied. On Monday he just arrived to the house around 9:30am with out confirming the time so no one was home. We let him in remotely because at this point we just want the job to be completed. I arrived home about 10:45am to find Garry asleep on the dinning room floor and he reeked horribly of liquor. I had to bang on the walls to wake him up. Once he got up. He said he wasn't sleep and began talking incoherently. Garry began to argue with me. His helper had to step in and correct him because he was mixing the days of the week up. After the dispute. Garry states he would work until 5pm to get the job done. I no longer feel comfortable with being in my home alone so I made some phone calls to rearrange my schedule. As I'm on the phone, Garry throws his tools on the truck and pulls off, nearly running me over. Either me nor my husband have heard from Garry. I had originally ordered Coretec but when I saw the quality of the Karndean, I immediately ordered the Karndean because of the superior quality and because the Karndean has a black plastic foam on the underside, so that my cats won't be ruining my floors with cat urine. The foam keeps mold & mildew from forming. I had loose flooring laid in a floating floor over my existing kitchen tiles & dining room floor & it looks just like real wood flooring. Stephen Rice, The owner who constantly reminded me of his military service has no company or in house installers and only subs to install his work. I've had several contractors come in since and they were blown away at the shoddy job that Brothers flooring tried to get away with. To add insult to injury his so-called project manager Josh, said it wasn't his responsibility and that all he was in charge of is picking up and delivering material then try to sell me $2 million worth of life insurance from his own company. When I asked why would I trust him since he wouldn't stand behind his work he said he has only been working for Brothers for two months and that he would guarantee his insurance products. Stephen Rice has since blocked my phone and won't take my calls. Please be aware of this fraud posing as a company and ask for references and then call them and ask to see their work. Stephen Rice talks about his military service and is a fine bullshitter so beware.
