This is a lovely hidden gem in downtown Olympia. Beautiful presentation of so many gorgeous pieces of jewelry, cards, Kitchen items, candles, lotions, and assorted gifts. Superb customer service as well. Very kind and knowledgeable. I purchased a gift for my sister and they wrapped it so beautifully!! Downtown can be a little sketchy these days but there is parking right out front of the store if you can get a spot. Otherwise....you will be met with aggressive panhandlers and people under the influence of drugs. This store is worth the trek. read more

This store is just what the doctor ordered for little knick knacks and a large array of various items for the kitchen, for the home, for the kids, and maybe even a hobby you may have. I recently started a hobby of collecting and sending postcards and one would think that postcards would be easy to find. Most of my friends suggested I check Archibald Sisters just two or three doors down. After the rather small selection of cards at Archibald Sisters, I went to the second place my friends mentioned, Compass Rose. There are just so many cute things in here. French presses for coffee, lots of cool stationary & cards, kitchen supplies, baby clothes and toys, random novelties and Olympia merchandise, and of course a huge selection of postcards. There were at least 3-4 racks of postcards. They were $1 each which wasn't too bad for the quality of cards. I've scene postcards for cheaper but not the same quality. I'll definitely be back to get more to continue my hobby. Oh and it's well lit and the gals that work there are really nice. read more

The store is great, and we have been going for years. However, Olympia has become one of the most woke cities in the PNW and Compass Rose is no exception. In the entrance they have a sign "kindly requesting to wear a mask", when we went inside, not only they didn't greet us as they used to, also when they came in contact with us after my wife was holding a few items in her hands, they told us "mask wearing is policy, and they won't help us until we wear our mask". Very cute store. It would be easy to lose track of time browsing in here. Lots of great items that are unique and most seemed to be sourced from small businesses. You will find lots of treasures that you'll pick up, turn over and be very surprised by the high numbers on the price tag. Then you'll set it down, move along and do it again with many more items! quaint, adorable, friendly gift shop. I wandered in looking for postcards. when i travel i really enjoy sending them out to friends and family - it's kind of a novelty for me. this store had several to chose from they were more of the art variety v. the photography kind. Anyway, was greeted immediately and then I said I was impressed with their postcard selection and that they are usually difficult to find. We both agreed and laughed about the old-timey tradition of sending a postcard. I found a few and they were kind of expensive, a dollar or more each. But figured I'd grab 'em here while I could. I chatted with the clerks, owner of the store I think, I didn't really even get to shop the entire store - because I wanted to move on and get a bite, but it was very charming. The staff introduced themselves - how sweet and were very talkative, directing me on where to eat and such. Wow! I was kind of overwhelmed with all their suggestions. They told me how safe it was to walk around - that was nice, I wasn't too worried, but I appreciate the added reassurance. (funny, the office I was working out of, the gal warned me about walking around outside day or night in Olympia) I kind of shrugged that off - weird to get two completely opposite and unsolicited pieces of advice for safety in Downtown Olympia. Also, later in my wanderings I found super cheap postcards at a bookstore nearby. Oh well - Really, honestly, no one sells them anymore when I shop/travel, so I jumped at the first ones I saw. haha. Super cute store! I could probably roam around for hours here looking at all the trinkets, candles, jewelry, books, and stationary they have. The store is set up with a color theme which is really cute. Each area is grouped together. So if your looking for something specific in a color palette it's really easy. I stopped by to grab some souvenirs for friends and family on my way out of Washington. The next time I'm in the area I will definitely go back to pick up some unique items. read more

My family and I spent the evening spashing around downtown and stopped in at the Compass Rose. Such a charming shop! The staff were very friendly and didn't give my kids the side-eye, which goes a long way. They had so many notecards and many Rifle Paper Company products (which are so gorgeous!). Their jewelry selection was amazing, and I found more than one thing I would have loved to own. They also had a surprisingly large selection of Le Creuset and other kitchen items. I chose a super cute mug with line drawings of bears on them, paid, walked out the door, and went to do some more milling around. And then the bottom of my bag broke and my cute new mug smucked to the concrete and shattered. I went back to the compass Rose fully prepared to buy another mug, but they gave me a replacement! Smells a little funky, but it is an import store after all. This means, you get to see interesting African pieces (animals out of wood/bone/etc) and textiles. They also have a cute selection of Asian ceramic bowls, small plates, and tea sets. Off to the side is a travel-y section, with Moleskin journals, a few books, and bags. Near the register is other trinkets, like small Mexican altars, earthen clay pigs, stickers. Past the register is a tiny room that sells fancy, letterpress, expensive cards. (nearly $6???) The front glass cases seem to feature more art, such as glass, ceramic, or jewelry. So it's expensive. The back has a clearance section that holds even more random items than the front. This review is random to reflect the randomness of this store. But it's worth a walk through. PS: they have QUEEN BEE bagsssss! read more

I feel like I've been writing a plethora of amazing reviews lately, but what can I say -- for the most part, Oly has awesome local establishments. This one's no exception. A friend of mine registered for her wedding here, and I'm lucky she did 'cause I probably never would have come into this place otherwise. Probably the most pleasant wedding shopping experience I've ever had. The registry was handwritten by my friend, and the employee walked me around the store glancing at the list and going , "hmm...I'm pretty sure this is what she wants." When I found something that I was interested in getting, she even helped me pick out a color and let me know what color other guests had gotten so we could coordinate a set. She wrapped the present amazingly (they have ADORABLE wrapping paper), and I was on my way. We even had a lovely conversation about children's music before I left! Beyond the service, this place has the CUTEST STUFF. Everything from adorable kitchen wares to cute local jewelry and quirky accessories. It's really the perfect place to shop for gifts (and I must admit I was coveting some of the stuff myself, maybe I'll have to register here if I get married ever). read more

I really love this store. It has a wonderful selection of items, both domestic and imported, functional and decorative, to give as gifts or to treat yourself. It is a little spendy, but every time I've gotten someone a gift from here they've liked it, which pleases me as well. The staff are friendly and not pushy or hovering like in some boutique stores, and the place is arranged well. A couple of people have mentioned that the name is unfortunate, and I agree but for a different reason: I can never seem to remember it! I'm often stopped and asked where I got my Queen Bee bag, and I usually have to resort to describing where the store is because I can never remember 'Compass Rose.' There are an inordinate number of shops downtown Olympia that sell a mish-mash of stuff no one needs but would kind of like to have. There is a muted focus to these stores, selling a few articles of clothing, some jewelry, toys, housewares, bookbags, stationary, etc. Compass Rose sells a higher quality (and more hip) mish-mash than the others, and I more often find things there that I would kind of like to have. The service provided sets them apart as well. Staff members are incredibly friendly, upbeat, and helpful. It's also less crammed; merchandise is presented in a pleasing manner ...convincing me that I'd kind of like to have it. The name of the store is unfortunate. I passed by a half dozen times, assuming it was a travel store. When I did finally enter, I was pleasantly surprised. The store is attractive and one immediately feels a very positive vibe. This place is one of the best treasures in Olympia. It's in a great location sharing walls with other amazing boutiques with fun and different personalities. It's definitely a place to go if you are downtown weekend shopping with some of your favorite coffee. It has a good amount of eclectic goods that are good for gifting or those special cool things in your home. From table to farming books, Le creuset Dutch ovens, cute simple raw jewelry, Pendleton shirts and coffee scrubs and artisan soaps; this place is really well done and affordable. I agree with the previous reviewer that the name of this store is unfortunate as I don't really understand the meaning behind it. Inside it doesn't really seem to be a travel store, which one could easily assume, at all. The facade of the store has big long windows with incredible brightly colored displays inside of them that just beg you to come inside the store. Once inside you will find a myriad of things, so much so, that you probably won't know what to do with yourself, like I did. You can find stationery, jewelry, candles, kitchen accessories, aprons, clothing, handbags, pet stuff, and random other things that aren't entirely classifiable. I really loved this store and I wanted to spend lots of money in here. There was so much I wanted. One of the BEST shops. EVER. Compass Rose is one of those stores where you walk in and find an item you never heard of before--but instantly need it and want the item. Compass Rose offers a wonderful selection of cards, kitchen accessories, glassware, Moser Glass, unique jewelry, gifts, baby/children items, interesting books, and knick-knacks. The Compass Rose ladies clearly have an eye for detail, as the store feels fool of unique and well-crafted items. I have purchased a wide variety of items of the years and I love them all: pot rack, jewelery, cake plate, umbrella, T-shirts, and stamps. The displays inside the store are artfully arranged and organized. I always look forward to seeing a new window design, as the ladies are incredibly creative and clever. There was the most unique earrings, rings and pendants made from vivid colored butterfly wings collected from dead butterflies in the rainforest. Sounds weird, but gorgeous.
