So after investing in pour over coffee equipment and trying a bunch of fresh roasted coffees, we've decided that Commonwealth Joe is the most flavorful. We especially like the potomac falls and Monticello sunrise roast. I also like how their coffee is rediculously fresh. Never disappoints! The weather for today is chilly and rainy, so I wanted to get a hot coffee. Normally, I go to Starbucks and just order a tall coffee with no cream or sugar. However, I wanted to try CWJ's hot coffee because I like their nitro cold brew. I'm glad I went to CWJ for hot coffee today. I got the Pour-over Shenandoah Spring and it made me feel warm and cozy. Additionally, customer service is always outstanding. Every time I visit CWJ, I'm always greeted with a smile. The employees are very knowledgeable and always eager to answer my questions. read more

This place found a way to combine the Manhattan x Portland vibe. The coffee is simply amazing. So amazing that we stared purchasing the beans for home. Their staff is always so full of suggestions and recommendations, which most places lack. Somehow they always know how to provide you with a perfect kick of caffeine that leaves you w/o the jitters. The prices are pretty up there, but tbh, it's worth it. As I imagine it wouldn't be the same if the lowered the prices. I've tried to work out of the shop once and I can't say it's a comfortable place to work, but it's a coffee shop, not your home office, so yet again I get it. The wifi is great if you are in desperate need to connect for work/school. Must try- nitro coffee. It gives me liiifffeee!!! Bottom line- if you are in the area and need a cup, skip the 3 Starbucks that are on the way and come here. You will not regret it! I love their coffee and service. They have designed and built a wireless friendly place that seems to accommodate everyone. I like the design very much. Cold press coffee is fantastic. They run it down like beer on tap. No ice because it's cold enough. Delicious. The staff here are coffee sommeliers. Another thing that makes CWJ stand out? Their customer service...seriously. Great coffee shop in Pentagon City for getting work done on the weekend or meeting a friend. Prices are super reasonable, and they have cheap (I believe one dollar) refills. The somewhat secluded countertop in the southwest corner is definitely a nice touch. Plus they have a dollar off baked treats after noon. I stopped by this coffee shop after I landed at Reagan International Airport. First, I ordered a latte. I could not find a noticeable flaw. It was rich and smooth with pretty latte art. It was not among the handful of best lattes I have ever had but it was definitely excellent. On the other hand, I opted for five stars because of the nitro cold brews. They have five different kinds that are named after some of the famous natural landscapes in Virginia (e.g. Shenandoah, Blue Ridge, etc.). Stopped by this coffee shop yesterday to meet up a friend, and I really enjoyed the atmosphere. The shop itself was clean, and more polished than your casual hipster spot like Northside Social. It wasn't too crowded and we were able to find a place to sit easily. I ordered a fairly simple drink, an iced americano and my friend got their cold brew which they poured it into what it seemed to be a goblet or snifter glass which was pretty cool. The staff was also friendly greeting and saying goodbye as you enter and leave. I would definitely come back to try their lattes as their espresso was strong and had depth. Third wave coffee in Crystal City! Not too many shops like this in the area. They have 6 nitro cold brew on tap (with free tastings), 6 pour over options, drip, and all the espresso options. They have 2 oz sample whole bean bags as well as 12 oz of all different types. Fridays at 10am they offer coffee cupping sessions. The baristas were amazingly friendly and helpful. Fantastic ambiance, fantastic wifi connection. And it's just a 5 minute walk from the metro. There's nothing NOT to like about this place. read more

I finish my entire cup of coffee every time I order from here. I usually get the latte, and the pour over is so fun to watch. The coffee is on the slightly more expensive side, but I don't mind treating myself here from time to time. I also tried their muffin- wow. SO GOOD. I came here on a whim after getting lunch nearby because I didn't feel like getting coffee from Starbucks and I don't regret it one bit. The shop itself is has a cute industrial look to it and had a decent amount of seating space for me and my friends. I knew I wanted cold brew, so the fellow who took my order recommended I try their cold brew latte with oat milk (I got mine unsweeted). I took one sip and it kind of changed my world. The oat milk made the cold brew taste really creamy and added a pleasant nutty flavor to the drink. I would totally recommend it to any coffee enthusiast, sweetened or unsweetened. Be warned, though: It's a pricey drink at $6 for 12 oz of beverage. read more

My friend and I decided to come here because I wanted to try the flavored nitro. When I got to the counter, I explained to the cashier that I love strong, black coffee, so all of the other nitros I've tried have tasted water down to me. I wasn't sure if their nitro would be strong enough for me, and asked him what he recommended. He thought I would like a few flavors, one of which was being swapped out, so he gave me a sample of one while I waited for the other. After a few minutes of waiting, I went and sat back down to chat with my friend, intending to check back in a few minutes. About five minutes later, he came over with samples for both of us! Although I ultimately decided to order iced coffee instead, I liked their nitro more than any other I've tried. I can also definitely recommend the iced coffee -- nice and strong! Note: we came here in the middle of the day on a Sunday and it was surprisingly busy! There isn't much seating but the turnover is fairly quick, so it's probably easier to find a seat than a parking spot. read more

Sweet grandmother's spatula! After living in the DMV area for just over a year now, I've had my fair share of trying local coffee shops to see what works/doesn't for me...I checked out Commonwealth Joe Coffee Roasters in Pentagon City about two weeks ago, and after my third visit last night where I was still blown away by all aspects of this great find, I figured it was time to write a review. I ordered a Chai Latte, and my date had a pour over of some sort. My chai was phenomenal (so much so that I was a little pissed I didn't go for the large), and her coffee was excellent, too. We split a slice of their banana bread - definitely fresh and delicious. The employees were really friendly and helpful, explained the different options and all that jazz...just a very clean, warm, welcoming place to be. I forgot to take pictures when I was in there, but as you'll see from others' photos, the inside of CWJ is clean, modern, and has just a comfy feel to it. I know it's a relatively recent addition to the Pentagon City small businesses, but already it seems like the word is out that it's a great spot to grab a quick coffee, stay and study, or a cool spot to bring a date. There is plenty of seating inside, and even though the place was poppin' when I was there, the employees are that great combination of friendly and efficient that keep the line moving, etc. It's great to have a local coffee shop with plenty of street parking nearby (and close to the metro/bus stops), where I can count on the coffee to be delicious and the perfect kind of pick-me-up for the day AND the inside is clean, cozy, and has a genuinely welcoming feel to it. It's a bright, open space with tons of outlets: ideal for work. I liked the little back room for groups. I wish I could judge their pourover and espresso pulls separately, but I had a red-eye. From the smell of the place, I imagine the beans are good! I wish there were more food options, but there's Whole Foods down the block if you're hungrier for something more than a pastry. read more
